@laurz9191 have you considered your shoes might be the culprit? You have put a lot of miles in recently.
Rainy here the past few days so got some runs in but only at 67 of 100 goal. This morning looks like it might actually not be 100% humidity. Happy Monday Everyone!4 -

You are such an all or nothing person! I have a wild idea. Hear me out. Maybe don’t let loose?
BTW, totally agree with you on American chocolate. We have a British store near us and the chocolate is so much better. It’s got a better texture and is less sweet. It tastes like chocolate not sugar.
@Laurz9191 You’re doing such a good job adjusting to an unexpected injury. It’s good you have a crosstraining sport you can roll into easily and seem to enjoy.4 -

The weekend rain is gone and in its wake is a couple of beautiful mornings. This morning was cool, humidity was low, just ! Since I did my long run yesterday but I had quite a bit of time available this morning I did a longer warmup with a mile walk, then ran 4 miles and walked out the last of my route which was another 0.5 mile or so. It was really pleasant and I will do this combo again on mornings where I have more time that I need. It adds up to a fair bit of extra time on feet and will hopefully help me maintain fitness a bit while I’m cutting back running.
Speaking of cutting back, recovery is going well. I am finally getting to the point where my legs don’t feel tired every run and I feel good about running. I actually want to go for a run, which was part of my struggle for the last couple of months. I needed a reset and taking some pressure off my schedule has done me some good. I am meeting a friend of mine in FL for Disney races in a month which will be fun, low pressure race days. I am doing the 5k, 10k, and 10 miler. She is doing the 10k. It provides enough motivation to keep me moving but is an easy enough event that I don’t need to “train”.8 -
05.03 4.5km 36min 8:06/km - 12 stride repeats
06.03 6.2km 51min 8:12/km - 10, 5, 5, 5min intervals
08.03 7.0km 57min 8:09/km - slow

11.03 4.2km 35min 8:16/km - slow
13.03 5.3km 43min 8:08/km - 22ish stride repeats
14.03 5.7km 47min 8:18/km - slow

18.03 4.0km 31min 7:52/km - 15 stride repeats
46.00km/80km, 1.1km behind
Went a bit too fast compared to doing stride repeats last time Doesn't matter. If weather allows I'll run 10k at the end of this week, otherwise next week Monday. Tuesday evening I'll take a train to the capital for the muscle biopsy next morning. And then a running break until this is healed.8 -
Well I’ve finally worked out what going on with my running - my form is way off. I realized during my run yesterday that I wasn’t rolling off my big toe so corrected that and promptly found my missing power. My tight hip was way less aggravated last night as a result. My back was still tight though.
Today I focussed on my toe the whole way and recorded my third fastest time for that loop. Woot!
I have just been to see my osteo and he explained the mechanics of it while he unjammed my foot, hip, and back - basically the jam in my foot was stopping me rolling off the big toe so my hip flexor was having to work very hard to compensate which is why running uphill was so difficult. The resulting tight hip flexor was pulling on all the muscles through my lower back, hip and abdomen.
Rest day tomorrow to let his ministrations settle and then I’ll test it on Thursday. Watch this space!
Incidentally, that speedy effort was in part due to being overtaken by a girl in the final 3k. I’ve seen her running a lot - she’s very tall (6 foot-ish) and rather quick. She’s also 20 years younger than me. She came loping past me when we were on the final uphill portion before the massive downhill home. There was no way I could keep up with her on the up but, on the down… let’s just say I also recorded a 3rd fastest time for that particular segment!
Hilariously, Strava now thinks we ran together so I now know who she is and can stalk her! What it hasn’t worked out is my average pace was 5:59 and hers was 5:25!8 -
You're doing great @ContraryMaryMary ! Glad you figured out the issue and are correcting it. Hahaha about the youngster. Out competitiveness does tend to come out during races.
Nice easy run this morning @tarun_yadavA . I do love chocolate and coconut together too. Almond joy's are okay. My Aunts church makes these chocolate covered coconut Easter Eggs this time of year. They are really good. I was good and didn't bring any home.....just a little bite of mom's.
@Laurz9191 Sounds like a great cross-training workout and tomorrow's bike ride sounds grueling.
Sounds like you are doing great with the recovery @martaindale !
You are doing great @yirara . Good vibes and prayers that the biopsy and recovery go well next week.

Yesterday, I just did a mile walk on the driveway after church, helping with a fundraiser, and taking a nap.
Today, I did my run early because mom had an appointment early afternoon. I got started later than I intended, so decided to walk a mile and run 15 ish minutes. The run was 2 min each at 4.5-4.9 mph, then 5:38 min at 5.0 mph. It was not as hard I was expecting it to be. Avg HR was 132 with a max of 147 bpm.6 -
Good morning everyone!
Got in 3.75M (at 10"26 pace).
@quilteryoyo ooohh that chocolate coconut egg sounds dee-lish 🤤
Glad you got something in after your fundraiser and nap! 🙌🏽
@Laurz9191 killing it on the bike now!! 💪🏽
(Shame the elliptical hurt too!)
@ContraryMaryMary LOL @ female stalker! 😂

@martaindale hahahaha
I wish I could Sarah.
I'm going with my 15yr old. So alcohol wise shouldn't be too bad.
Start off at my bestie's in FL... And I only spend time with him ~twice in a year. So those 2 nights will be heavy.
Finish at my NJ cousin's. Again. Same. Twice a year kinda thing - so will also be heavy!
But he (teen) is quite into all these viral TikTok YouTube foodie types... So there a few places he wants to eat at. So if not booze then calorie carnage for sure!

@tarun_yadavA well FLA is not that far from all of us in Texas... I vote for ROAD trip vs food carnage. 🙃😆😂

Haha @SummerSkier I was thinking @tarun_yadavA if you’re driving from FL to NJ you’ll have to drive through Virginia, so road trip to meet up with me along the way would be really cool! 😀😀4 -
Hi everyone!
Just finished my bike ride today. It wasn’t what I had hoped though. There are not too many times in your life where you think to yourself I would rather be on a 20 mile run, but that’s pretty much what I was thinking about the whole time.
It was boring and my toes went numb right away (they still are numb). I also realised I would need over 5 hours to finish- so I aborted after 40 km and am now waiting for the train to take me home 😥. Next time I need to find a biking buddy to come with me! Legs are fine though despite the numbness . I’m hopeful tomorrow’s training is easier!9 -
March 2 – 7.38 miles
March 3 – 3.02 miles
March 4 – 5.03 miles
March 5 – 5.10 miles
March 11 – 5 miles
March 13 – 5.12 miles
March 14 – 3.20 miles (am) + 2.01 miles (pm - trail)
March 15 – 5.18 miles
March 17 – 9.06 miles (trail)
March 19 – 5.01 miles
Total 55.20/100 mile goal
My morning running partner bailed on me at the last minute so I chose to run in the parking lots and on the walking path of our corporate campus instead of the city streets since it was still quite dark at 5:00 am. The temp was 30F but there were 12 mph winds so there was a nasty cold breeze blowing. I was dressed good though. The only thing that got cold was my exposed face.
Very insightful about your form @ContraryMaryMary! Nice running trying to keep up with long legs!
A 40km bike ride is nothing to sneeze at @Laurz9191! Especially when you are rehabbing.
5 -
Nice morning run @tarun_yadavA . Sounds like you will be finding some great places to eat. You'll have to give us your critiques.
@Laurz9191 Sorry your toes went numb and you had to bail on the ride, but you did great! Somedays, you just can't. I'm glad your leg is okay.
@Teresa502 You were probably smart to not run on the streets alone. It was cold here this morning too, but no breeze, so it wasn't quite as bad. Of course, I did NOT get out for a run though. LOL You did great. It's supposed to be breezy later in the day. That makes it feel so much colder.

@SummerSkier LOL yes I am roadtripping it!
Would love to drive to TX 😊, but going south to north this trip.
Flying into MIA, flying out of JFK. Initially - Was just gonna split time between the two places, and catch a one-way internal, but both friend and cousin have work (work and golf!) related things going on during the week. So we are roadtripping it!
@daria0919 Virginia on the list indeed! 😊
Plan is:
2 nights in Ft Laudy burbs in FL at friends'.
2 nights in Atlanta (the Bucks are in town at the Hawks; so that's a win!).
2 nights in Asheville NC (have a friend there).
2 nights in Virginia Beach (teen picked this stop... He met a teen girl on cruise ship last year and they kept in touch so he wanted to say hi! 🤷 )
Then finish off in NJ before heading home to London!
@quilteryoyo - indeed! I shall keep you posted on the calorie carnage!
Hitting up Lexington BBQ for North Carolina style BBQ when on the road between Asheville and Virginia Beach.
Got a Maryland Crabcake place lined up for when driving between VA and NJ.
When in South Florida... Gotta eat a Cubano sandwich!
In addition... Eyes are peeled for a Cheesecake Factory!

I've only had one pair of Cumulus, version 16. My notes say the outsole wore out prematurely and lasted 250 miles, whereas I average 305 miles per pair. I do like the ASICS Gel Nimbus quite a bit and have gone through 6 pair of those.
My current favorite road shoe is the Saucony Kinvara. My current pair in rotation is the 12 and they have 450+ miles on them. Super light, super comfortable, only a 4mm drop, and when looking at the bottom I didn't think they'd last long but they just keep going and going. I am starting to sense that perhaps they're getting close to the end but I have 3 more pair in reserve (I found them on sale for $45 to $60 per pair so I stocked up).

I'm back...
It's been an emotional rollercoaster for me this past couple of weeks, and I'm not making my mileage goal. Here's the LONG day by day account below. TLDR is at the bottom.:
3/2 - great 26 mile trail run/power hike. Finally feel like training is going great
3/3 - skip my run because of work stress and convincing myself I need the downtime after yesterday's run
3/4 - walk 2 miles to the drugstore and on the way I noticed a very sharp pain in my left foot between my 4th and 5th toe. It almost feels like something sharp is digging in. Concerned, I skip my run.
3/5 - more intermittent pain, skip run
3/6 - decide to test it out on a 2 mile run. Hurts at the start, feels ok most of the run. I wonder if it's a Morton's Neuroma
3/7 - hurts like crazy, I'm now in panic mode and schedule an appointment with a foot doctor for 3/12. I research Morton's Neuroma and decide that's not it because I don't feel anything on the bottom of my foot. I think decide it feels just like the time the tendon in my right foot ruptured several years ago. Now I fear not only is my race in jeopardy, but I'll be out of commission for 3 months, jeopardizing part of sailing season and seriously hampering training for my September race. I'm not in a happy place.
3/8 - I decided to test it out with a 2.5 mile bike ride - no pain.
3/9 - On a gorgeous spring day I go for a 12 mile bike ride on a local wooded rail trail and wonder why I don't bike more often. I laugh when I look at Strava and see I'm way at the very bottom in all the segments. No pain from the foot.
3/10 - I'd planned on another bike ride by woke up to enough pain that I skipped it. Can't wait for the appointment!
3/12 - Saw the doc. Of course my foot felt fine today. After X-rays and much poking, prodding and inducing pain by the doctor, he determined it was indeed a Morton's Neuroma. He gave me a shot of cortisone and lidocaine, said it I should feel relief very quickly, I could start running the next day, and if the pain comes back, I can run through it without fear of damage. AND...I'm good to go for my race. Yay!! He also gave me some calf stretching exercises to do.
3/14 - 7 mile run with no pain. The run is awesome. Life is good again.
3/15 - Oh oh....I woke up with pain, just as bad as before the shot. I scheduled follow up appointment for 3/18. The pain slowly became milder as the day went on and eventually I pushed through a 4 mile run.
3/16 - back on the trails for 26 miler. There was enough pain for the first mile that I seriously considered going back home and wallowing in self pity. I then remembered the doc said I could run through it, so I pushed on. By the second mile there was no pain and life was good again. It continued that way until mile 21, when a bolt of pain shot through my foot so hard it made me stop in my tracks and swear out loud. It was far more pain than anything I'd felt from this since it started. I continued on for bit but the intermittent biting pain was too much so I slowed to a power hike. Eventually that was too much and I finished my miles at a normal hike, cussing and grimacing all the way. Now I'm back to thinking my race is over before it starts.
3/17 - What? No one bit of pain whatsoever. It's like nothing happened. Now I'm confused but happy.
3/18 - again no pain at all. Saw the doctor. Found out that yes, I'd receive pain relief as I found out, but that's from the lidocaine, not the cortisone. The cortisone takes a week or two to fully kick in. He tells me I can keep on as I wish. Now I'm back to feeling great about life. I get back home, eager to run. I planned a 4 mile run to test it out again but it felt so great I kept going for 6.6 miles. Not a hint of pain last night, or today. YES!!!!!
TL:DR - A couple days after my 26 mile run just over 2 weeks ago I experienced some nasty foot pain which I thought would derail my upcoming race. It turned out to be Morton's Neuroma. Doc game me a shot of cortisone, told me I could run through it, and sent me on my way. After some pain on and off since then, I think I'm back to running fine.
Tonight I'm going for 9 miles. Planning on another 26 miler this Saturday, then I'll start a two week taper. I'll probably end up with 140 to 150 miles on the month instead of 165.

@eleanorhawkins YOWZA! I absolutely love that you continued on after missing the AS cutoff and MADE IT! That took guts and will power. I was quite impressed at that point....but wait...there's more...SHE'S GOING OUT AGAIN! You are one tough cookie!6

No idea, was tired, exhausted, restless. Started running fast and just kept it up. Same average pace as yesterday, but no intervals. Will try to get to 10km doesn't matter how during the weekend on Monday. Weather for all three days is rubbish. We'll see, and I'll chose the best day.4 -

It was perfection this morning. Mid 40’s, clear, low humidity. Perfection! Same basic routine as yesterday. I did a 1 mile warm-up walk then ran out the rest of the route I planned, ending up with a bit over 3 miles. Even though most of my runs are shorter, doing the longer warm-up walk seems to do the trick as far as motivation. It gets me out the door with no real obligation to run but after a few minutes, I’m wanting to run. Good news for now.

Slowly catching up...
Late happy birthday @ContraryMaryMary ! Unlike many of the others, I say embrace the hills. What's hard makes you stronger. Effort is effort. If you have to slow down, so be it. Easy doesn't change you.TheMrWobbly wrote: »Any insights greatly appreciated.
@eleanorhawkins congrats to another second place age group performance! BTW, speaking of hills, you're my hero for hills. I'm on pace for my best year ever for total vertical and I'm still just at 60% of what you've done, and that doesn't even take into account your hiking.
@daria0919 that's very stylish color on your new shoes. Sorry to hear about your training not going well. I think dropping down might be what you need and as @martaindale said, there definitely no shame in that. Make sure you're running your miles slow enough that your can sing a song while you run. I'd also consider a new trainer...one who understands a different generation.
@Teresa502 sorry your race got canceled but it looks like they could have turned it into a swimming event. Kidding aside, that looks horrible.
@kgirlhart you probably have your answer by now, but whether you need trail shoes depends on the trail surface. Many trails are fine with road shoes but some trails require a more grip and more structure to the shoe. Some trails are fine with road shoes when they're dry, but it's quite different when they're muddy. I'd get a pair of trail shoes. If if the trail your race on is good enough for road shoes, it might be rainy, and you'd probably want them for training. And there's a good chance you'll get hooked on trail running anyway. Personally I don't care for running on paved surfaces with trail shoes until they're really worn down. (ETA: I see @martaindale has run the race and said road shoes are fine. Will you need trail shoes for training on trails though? )
Ok, I'm through Page 12. Will catch up with the rest later.

I got a good run in before heading out to watch the parades on Sunday and then dinner with my family. The weather was lovely so there was a big turn out and we had a good time. Then yesterday it was all stormy and rain again but that passed during the night so nice again today. There is a large hare hopping about in field across from our house and it's bothering Dakota. Every time it appears Dakota gets into a frenzy and gives these warning barks to get off his territory.

@tarun_yadavA that food at the Tamil Prince looks amazing. As do the pints. A road trip with your son will be a great time.
@emptydog congrats on the race! In your 70's and still running...I love it! that's what I aspire to!
@Laurz9191 I sure do hope that calf heals quickly. If you can't run the race, would you consider volunteering at it? I can sympathize with you about bike riding not being a great substitute for running. I mean it IS, but not when running is your passion. When I went on my 12 mile ride 10 days ago I couldn't stop thinking about how awesome it would be to run that trail and how I'd enjoy it so much more. I also couldn't stop thinking about how much the seat was hurting my tush!6 -
@tarun_yadavA dang it! I will be in Atlanta in about 4 weeks, so I will just have missed you! Enjoy all the American indulgences 😉
@ContraryMaryMary good that you discovered and fixed what was causing your running form to be thrown off. That big toe is important! Unfortunately my right big toe has some kind of arthritis and can hardly bend. But it's been that way for years, so I guess I compensate some how.
@Laurz9191 I too find bike rides very boring. But you kicked butt on your long ride. Hope you can recover from it and continue to rehab.
Got 7 miles in this evening. Was kind of a weird run...felt comfortable for the first 4 miles, and negative split each one, but after that I got really hot and tired, and positive split the last 3 miles, taking a walk break before the last one. That doesn't usually happen. I typically get faster the longer I go. It wasn't THAT hot at 64F, but I really felt the 15mph south head wind on the way back.

1 mile on the walking pad yesterday just to stretch my legs. 3.22 miles today - two separate wogs.
@quilteryoyo the lower running group is all young people and they left me in the dust. Looks like I’ll be doing it alone. With the higher group there were more walkers, so I usually had some people around with me. Oh well 🤷🏻♀️5 -
@7lenny7 I’m glad you’ve been able to work through your foot issue and happy that you’re still able to train. Way to go!
@Laurz9191 glad you’ve found an alternative to running for now - hopefully you’ll heal quickly.
@Teresa502 great job getting 5 miles in with that wind.
@Scott6255 nice job getting your 7 in.
@tarun_yadavA there’s a Cheesecake Factory in the Richmond VA area, so if you’re taking the route from Asheville NC to VA Beach via Richmond then lunch it is!6
