Morning all
Got in 3.75 (at 09"56).
100% what you're saying @Laurz9191 around being comfortable where you're at but knowing that addictional weightloss would make you a better runner. That's why 175 lbs is the holy grail for me. I was a better runner for it!
PS: nice Mario cake! 😊
@chris_in_cal thanks for the kind words.! Much appreciated 😊
So next time you go Mexico - no need to compromise your vacay by laying off the cervezas and extra desserts at the buffet! Just as you said - plan around it! 😊
You got this! 💪🏽
@quilteryoyo thank you!
Have a nice day all! 😊7 -
Good morning everyone!
My leg is finally starting to feel better and I’m in such a good mood for it because now I have hope that maybe I can start up again (slowly) soon. Definitely not this week though. Icing it seems to really help the swelling go down.
I did the elliptical mode again that leaves the calf muscle more or less out of the training and it went well. I was also better able to keep my heart rate up. I started on the stationary tension bike but was too bored to go on for too long. Then did some strength work and stretching that went even better than yesterday! All and all a nice workout.
Have a nice day everyone!7 -
I'm glad you figured it out @ContraryMaryMary ! I am confident you will get that PR soon!
Nice run this morning @tarun_yadavA .
I'm glad things are looking up for you @Laurz9191 .

I forgot to mention something important about my run last night...NO pain! That's four days with out that pesky neuroma acting up, with two of those being run days. I won't say I'm in the clear yet, but I'm getting less concerned. A big test will be Saturday when I go for another solo trail marathon. We've got a bunch of snow in the forecast (3-5 inches starting tonight, followed by 14 inches starting Saturday but I think there will be a break Saturday for my long run. Normally I love running in the snow but that much fresh snow, for that long, is a lot of work. I'd probably switch to a time-based run (6 hours) rather than distance at that point.
It looks like I'm not the only one who's getting better...great to hear about @ContraryMaryMary and @Laurz9191 feeling better as well!!
@tarun_yadavA amazing transformation!
@quilteryoyo 50 pounds, wow!
This is my before/after. I lost 45 pound in 8 months, and also went from from inactive to finishing my first HM. The "before" photo was the catalyst which made me realize I needed to do something. Discussing this is starting to motivate me to get back down to the "after" and beyond.

If any one here likes Saucony Peregrine trail shoes, and lives in the US, Sierra is has Men's version 12 and Men's and Women's version 13 on sale for $50 to $60 per pair. I just bought a pair of each, because apparently I need more. With this order I now have 8 pair in rotation, 14 pair in reserve.
I can't link to them here, but if you go to the Sierra website, search for Saucony Trail and 7 different pair will come up. One pair says it's the version 12, one pair is the "Ride 15" and the rest are Peregrine 13's. It does list them as 13's, but if you zoom in on the side view photo you'll see the name on the shoe. Sometimes Sierra has agreements with the manufacturer not to advertise the model, and sometimes not even the brand. Sizes selection is limited.5 -

Happy Birthday @Teresa502!! I am pretty sure I am the oldest person in this group and somehow I think all of you all are much much younger than me! So you can't possibly be 59 - 39 maybe? Definitely not 59!
I am so happy to see that @ContraryMaryMary, @Laurz9191 and @7lenny7 are all on the mend!
@SummerSkier - I also continue to log my food regularly unless we go out or are traveling. I put a lot of my recipes in a long time ago so that helps too. I started logging in 2012 at the request of my trainer. We went over what I was eating which was mostly good so the focus was on portion control. I didn't cut anything out of my diet, didn't go on a 'diet' just ate measured portions. I did decided to stop drinking diet sodas which I would have a couple times a day. I was doing strength training twice a week and I started running right about that same time. Over about a 3 year period I lost just over 60lbs. I also saw a nutritionist at one point when I was struggling to run and she upped my calories based on my workouts with specific macro targets. I was sure I would gain but I didn't. In the last few years though I gained 15-20lbs back, until last year when I lost it all plus more. Now I continue to log to make sure I am eating enough and getting enough protein.
@tarun_yadavA - love your before and after. Also @7lenny7's too
My before and after is in the spoiler - you can tell the after was a while ago since Hobbes as no white yet 😁 No treatment this week so trying to get out and walk or workout as much as I can before next Wednesday (next treatment). I am at 25.45mi so far and think I can still hit my 30mi goal for the month.
DD is flying in tonight for her dad's birthday and we are all going to the San Diego zoo tomorrow. I am really looking forward to a day out of the house. Hopefully it is not crowded.8 -
Amazing transformation @7lenny7 ! I don't really have any before and after pictures...at least I don't think I do. I'll need to see what I can find when I was at my highest and lowest. Yeah for four days with no pain! That's a lot of snow heading your way. I can imagine running it that would be worse than loose sand, which is really hard too.
Great running @daria0919 !
Fantastic before and after pictures @shanaber ! Since you brought it up, how old are you? I never think of you being the oldest here. Happy Birthday to your DH and hope you enjoy the visit from your daughter and the zoo. Also hope it isn't too crowded. You're doing great with your walking this month!1 -
I went out for a driveway run this morning, but it turned into a true wun when I started feeling nauseous. I think it was because I took my pills on and empty stomach and went straight out for my wun. Lesson learned on that one. I did 2.25 miles. Avg HR was 122 with a max of 139 bpm. The temps were a bit chilly, but felt pretty good - 39F (3.9C) when I went out and 44F (6.7C) when I finished.
After a rest, I bush hogged more of my hill with the DR. I spent 2h32m34s doing that. I had to go slower today because the brush and briers are really thick. Only traversed 1.38 miles. I stopped when I did because I was scheduled to play tennis at 6 and needed to rest and take a shower beforehand. About the time I got everything put away I got a text that tennis was cancelled. Probably for the best. I'm not sure how much more my arms and legs had in them anyway. It will probably take a couple of more good days to finish the bush hogging for the year.

@shanaber and @7lenny7 and @tarun_yadavA thank you all for sharing your before and after photos! Very motivating! You all should be congratulated on the amazing transformations.
@quilteryoyo a 50 pound loss - fantastic!
@Laurz9191 great job on your 30ish pounds gone as well.
I guess from what I’m hearing that @AlphaHowls also had an amazing transformation.
And @kgirlhart an amazing 80 pounds gone several years ago.
Everyone - WOW!!!!
Did I miss anyone?
If anyone else wants to share their before and after, please do - very inspiring!
Once I lose 30+ I’ll post my before and after as well, hopefully within a year or so.6 -
I agree @daria0919 it's really refreshing to read about all these stories and I think being active and being here are the key to a lot of the successes. thank you all for sharing and it is inspiring.
Running may not be for everyone but based on the folks here I would say it is a miracle drug. 😍😍
Weather has been pretty gloomy the last fews days so I did a few walks just to keep limber. Supposed to be nice the next few days so hope to be rested and motivated to get a few runs in before rain again on Monday. We are in countdown phase now to the eclipse total here on the 8th and people are already panicking. So funny. Anyway, I gots my glasses so I am good. Also my generator and my 45 cal if I need that too. 😆😆😆9 -

I wish MFP had a laugh button in addition to the like button. 😂😂 @SummerSkier!

you can laugh but if you ONLY knew the texas power grid you would know the fear is real...😳🙃2

@quilteryoyo - I'm 68! Before I believe @MobyCarp was the oldest. I still miss him.

This is my before and after - not as dramatic as some but the difference in fitness between these two pics is phenomenal. On the left, me running my first half back in 2010, aged 36. I was around 75kg and it took me 1:58. The photo on the right was taken in 2020, at 46. I’m about 62kg here and ran that half in 1:44.
Three and a half years on I’m a couple of kilos heavier and a bit slower - priories have shifted and I’ve not been training as intensely (I no longer have a coach making me do speed work or 50km a week). But I’m back on the band wagon - I loved being 62kg and am almost there again. I loved being fast, but I have quite a bit more work to do on that front. Watch this space.
For me, my weight loss had nothing to do with running. I simply like food too much. Joining MFP and tracking what I ate is 100% how I got slim. That being said, my weight loss coincided with me becoming a mum and ditching the high-pressure job for part time freelance work. I’ve heard cortisol plays a big part in weight gain/retention, so a less stressful life would help. That being said, no corporate job, no corporate lunches…10 -
Many happy, slightly belated, returns @Teresa502
Here is a question for you. Statistically speaking, how many people need to be in a room for there to be an expectation that 2 of them would share they same birthday (day and month, not year)?
This was may journey over 12 months from not exercising to running halves. Unfortunately I got injured, stopped running, and, surprise, surprise, put a lot of weight on.
Going through it all again is a lot tougher at 53 than it was at 49 for some reason.
Thanks for the tip @7lenny7 and hydration is definitely key to keeping my heart rate in check. I have some SIS tablets with salt to add to my water which did the trick last week and my HR never got over 150.
What are our weekend plans? Anyone have a race?
10 -
Morning all
Got in 3.87M (at 09"51).
Great progress and achievements @shanaber @TheMrWobbly @7lenny7 !!! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Doubly so @shanaber - despite everything, you're back out there and giving it full effort ! 🙌🏽
Think I will go for another weekend 'longer' run this weekend. Been carless this week. So have been dropping 9year old off to school via tube+walking. Then running to Wapping tube station, 1 stop north of the River. Otherwise to carry on, cross the bridge and go back on myself... Turns into 6.5M run. Which might be a bit much daily / don't want to injure anything.
So stuck with the 3.75ish level this week!
Happy Friday everyone! 😊8 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »Fantastic before and after pictures @shanaber ! Since you brought it up, how old are you? I never think of you being the oldest here.
@quilteryoyo - I'm 68! Before I believe @MobyCarp was the oldest. I still miss him.
I think @emptydog (was it?) said he just ran a 5K and made reference to being in the 70+ category.
@ContraryMaryMary looking great!
@TheMrWobbly I’m glad you found that staying better hydrated has helped. Keep at the weight loss effort. Good work! It’s a slower process as we get older, but still worth the effort to get those pounds off.5 -
SummerSkier wrote: »you can laugh but if you ONLY knew the texas power grid you would know the fear is real...😳🙃
Yes, the power grid stuff is quite serious - I was amused by your 45 cal comment.5 -
Hi Everyone,
I braved another bike tour this morning and it was quite rewarding. I biked 50.4 km. This time, I picked a shorter route that I would actually finish. The first half was basically uphill and culminated at the Gaußturm - any of you mathematicians heard of Gauß? In any case, one of the things he was famous for was measuring distances and one of his reference points was the top of the largest mountain (hill) in the area. Very steep. I panted and huffed my way to the top. It was a good ride, but there were quite strong wind gusts and I never could tell what direction they would come from, so today my main challenge was staying atop the bike and staying in a roughly straight line on the downhills.
My leg feel absolutely fine today. I am going to attempt to run an easy 10 minutes tomorrow. At the first sign of calf pain I will abort. Fingers crossed it will go well and I can then slowly start increasing my mileage again. I am getting used to cross training, but biking is a far off second to the joy and peace that I get from running.8 -
@ContraryMaryMary That is an amazing increase in speed and an incredible accomplishment to get that much faster between 36 and 46! I also like running fast (for me fast- by no means olympic standard), but don't always have the headspace to do the work it takes (intervals/sprints) solo. Also, I do worry about injury more if I do the fast stuff too often.
Anyone else following the Barkley Marathons at the moment? I sure do hope that a woman (Jasmin Paris) finally finishes it!5 -
@Laurz9191 yep! Heard of Gauss! I studied Mathematics at university! (Forgot it all now!)
@ContraryMaryMary sorry I missed you out earlier! Also amazing 🙌🏽3 -

@Laurz9191 being the math nerd that I am, one of my first two dogs we named Gauss! We named the other one Dirichlet.2
-
Thanks @daria0919 . Hahaha on your dogs names.
@SummerSkier Great job getting out for rainy walks. I hope you get in some running this weekend. This may be a stupid question, but why is everyone panicking over the eclipse? It's going to get dark, then it will get light again. The sky isn't falling. Hope you don't need the 45 cal, but glad you have it if you do.
@shanaber You sure don't look 68! I miss @MobyCarp and @PastorVincent a lot. I wasn't here a long time before @MobyCarp passed, but I do remember he always had the best posts.
Glad the rain stopped and you were able to get in a dry 6 mile run @kgirlhart .
That is a great transformation @ContraryMaryMary . I can see how much fitter you are and slimmer too. It sounds like a lot of us have put on a few pounds we'd like to get off again. Maybe this discussion will give us the motivation to try just a bit harder.
@TheMrWobbly I'd guess 366? Great transformation. You did it once, you can do it again. It does get harder as we get older though.
Great running @tarun_yadavA and having shorter runs in the mix of everyday running is probably a good idea for most of us mortals. I think @AlphaHowls is the exception here.
Great bike ride today @Laurz9191 . I'm really glad the calf is feeling better and hope your run tomorrow goes well.
Yeah for a fun run @yirara .
Today, I did a 2 mile treadmill walk early, before heading out for the day.
46.00/85.00 mile goal
After the walk, mom and I headed to town for hair cuts and then we went to the hospital to see my new grand-niece Magnolia Grace. She was born yesterday. Pictures in the spoiler is you want a baby fix. LOL
Me, mom, and all three girls, Mya, Maislee, and Magnolia
Me and Magnolia. She slept the entire time we were there.
They are going to be great big sisters and were obsessed with the baby.

Cute bubs @quilteryoyo
I had Parkrun again this morning. Not as fast as I’d hoped to be, but I am running on tired legs. My return to five minutes per kilometre pace is a way off yet 😂. However, it was a small field, so my effort was good enough for fourth woman home.10 -

Great job @ContraryMaryMary .

Morning all.
I ran a Half distance. 13.13M (at 08"41).
