Barbie - I genuinely am trying to find my way to that same mental and emotional equilibrium for seeing the gynecologist two weeks from now and I'm struggling with it, so I appreciate the outlook. I'm telling myself everything I can think of to gin myself up for being OK with it (was going to say "wanting to do it," but yeah, no). I'll be satisfied if I just don't end up a quivering wreck afterward again. Box breathing helps. Some.
Barbara AHMOD - We dodged the damage from the last storms, but it's going to be a constant, it's that time of year in Tornado Alley, unfortunately. No predictions, just hope that the usual patterns that show us to have been protected so far by the vagaries of geography and wind currents continue to keep us that way. This is a map of Tornado Alley in North America, and we're in the "high" tornado section (we're at the blue spot) but in between two sections of the "highest"(the darkest brown blobs).
Feel as if I'm swimming upstream - have been napping almost every day for more than a week. Not because I want to, but because I have to--I'm so exhausted by 1 or 2 pm that if I don't lay down, I'll fall asleep sitting up. Not my usual pattern, and I can only wonder if it has to do with the meds. I keep feeling as if I get enough sleep just one night, I'll be awake and alert enough to break the cycle. Ah well, it will pass.
Everything's done that I wanted to do today except to get one panel done on the quilt, so I'm going to go do that in order to make myself feel like I finished my to-do list! Lordie... Picked up a couple take-n-bake pizzas for tonight, neither of us was in the mood for much fussing.
Later, my chickens,
Love from sunny for the moment Arkansas,

Well, here it is almost the end of May and I have just found y'all! Noni in Alabama, here. The end of April, I started being more intentional on my general health-trying to make things happen, rather than just letting them happen. I've done well (not perfect, but 'better' is my goal!) this month with my food choices and water intake. Still working on remembering to take my supplements and getting enough protein. Last year, I started trying to reclaim a yard from pretty weedy grass and invasives. Still working it and making progress. Working in the yard, however, uses all of my energy and my housekeeping has gone to pot. Hoping to take back some control during this last bit of May. Not sure how to balance yard work and housework, as I have energy limitations these days, but I will figure it out! Good to meet you all and wishing everyone strength and courage on this journey-)8

Annie like I said contact whatever elder services Deleware has after the holiday weekend.. they have a wealth of information also check the AARP website also..
I hope everyone enjoys there holiday weekend xoxo5 -
Noni in Alabama, Glad to meet you. I have frequently inventories my life to see what's most important and housework always comes up low on the list. I take care of keeping the kitchen and bathroom tidy and sanitary, doing the laundry, and putting things away, but the rest is far less important than walking, pet care, husband care, yard care, reading, and a few other things. I hope you'll keep coming back. I read this thread every morning with my breakfast and sometimes later in the day to remind me that people care about me and that I have support from other women who consider their health important.
Lisa, You have endured and dealt with so much medical stuff that I have huge admiration for you. When I was first facing a visit to the gynecologist as a young woman, someone said that it was really no different than having someone look in my mouth. That was not comforting.

Barbie - remember when you first told us about the Thursday Murder Club book series by Richard Osman? It was at least a year ago. I was able to borrow the first three books from the library on Kindle either immediately or after a short wait. I decided to re-read the series and now there's a huge waiting list for them. The Last Devil to Die was available so I snatched it up. I hope Osman keeps the series going.
Think I'll start over with Charles Todd's Scotland Yard's Det. Ian Rutledge series. It's a lot different that Osman's books, but in my mind, the books give a good picture of England after WW1 and what it was like for veterans and the citizens recovering from the war.
Lisa - does your house have a basement/tornado shelter? The Farmer's Almanac predicts a cool wet summer for the Pacific Northwest and according to a climate report I saw yesterday, it looks like that might be accurate. Glad I'm raising cool weather tomatoes. I too have been falling asleep in my chair, I nearly fell asleep at the optometrist's waiting for him to come into the exam room. He stuck his head in the door and asked if he should turn off the lights and let me sleep, lol. I wonder if pollen/allergies are making us tired. Did better today.
Noni - welcome! Sounds like you are on the right track. I just read yardwork counts as strength training, and I sure believe it.
Heather - glad you were able to see the doctor and get a prescription. Please remind us again - your operation is next week, right?
Did more closet cleanout today, have a pile for the thrift store. Last year I ordered several tops and they are all too large - they were when I got them. So off they go.

Another thought about dental work. People who are terrified by the dentist or who have had bad experiences are quick to share their fears but people who find the process easy and non threatening rarely say anything. I just remembered that my walking friend has had many dental adventures and has never said more than that they occurred with no complaints other than it interfered with her schedule. When I had a root canal a few years ago the only downsides were that I don't like to sit still that long and I would have preferred to spend my money on something else.

Through my long dental history, I have found that most dentists now are better than they were a number of years ago. Simply putting the topical anaesthetic on the gums with a Q-tip before using the needle was a huge breakthrough!
I've also discovered that I have a bad reaction to the adrenaline (epinephrine) in the injections (breathing problems, racing heart rate, sweating, nausea, dizziness, increased anxiety, and feeling like I was going to faint). But dentists have local anaesthetics without adrenaline on hand, and I feel much better when they use those ones.

Next up ... painting.

This is how it was before ... I found it dark and cold, like being in a cave. Also, we have dark grey carpet at work, so having dark grey carpet at home seemed too much like living at the office. The new floor feels much warmer.

Machka - good idea, I may look into that.
Love the colouring with the paint pens. I have a set of those I use for ceramics and delicate painting, I wouldnβt have thought of colouring with them.
What a difference the flooring made!
Heather - happy that you rang the doctor, much better to be safe than sorry.
Lisa - Rodger never returns anything either, it drives me crazy.
I hope itβs not the meds making you tired. If thatβs the only side effect and it works it might be worth it though.
I got to school this morning to find out that we had a whole school walk this morning. It was called Tomβs Walk for a local boy that suffered with mental illness and passed in 2018. The walk is a way to raise money to help others.
I was not prepared for this in any way whatsoever. I wore my knock off Birkenstockβs that help my feet when Iβm able to sit a bit. They are not meant for walking almost 5km. I have a blister starting on both feet, and of course my plantar fasciitis is yelling at me.
On the other hand, it was a beautiful walk, in a part of the city I hadnβt walked around before. It is within walking distance for me if I was doing 5Kβs again.
I did nothing this evening, tomorrow I am apparently helping Rodger do some landscaping. Iβm not 100% clear on his vision but Iβll go along. I know his reasoning is to make it easier to mow.

Lisa - It's OK to have a nap in the afternoon. I've done it all my life, and it's been a life saver. I absolutely love it. It's my happy time. Like you, my nights are brief and interrupted, so it's essential for my physical and mental health.
Why don't you get in touch with the gynaecologist and confess your fears. I'm sure it won't be a surprise to her. You can explain your background. It will help her reassure you and you will feel proactive. (Important to me) I find a breath in, and a big sigh out, like when you are really happy to sink into a comfortable chair, is much better than box breathing. It tells the vagus nerve you are happy and relaxed! Box breathing makes my nerves worse!
Can't hurt to give it a try.

Pip nice summer βdo!
Machka ββ¦might appear to be a lost cause ... but we can get out our acrylic paint pens and work with it to create something different that makes us smile. β this!
Jackie congratulations on the 4.4 lbs. Safe travels!
Welcome @g2renew Noni in AL! βnot perfect, but 'better'β resonates with Barbie, Heather and othersβ recommendation to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. . . and Iβd always take yardwork over house work

For those who asked, my surgery date is next Friday. 31st May.
I'm scheduled for the morning, but I won't know until Thursday afternoon if that is definite.
My friend A rang me yesterday, trying to help me with homeopathic remedies. No objection to others using them, but I don't believe in the concept. I also really hate being told what to fo, or given unwanted advice π, but I know she meant well. I've always hated people, teachers, etc telling me something I know already. It feels insulting and infantilising to me. New information is always welcome. I felt a bit sorry for her, but she has always been a bit 'woo woo' with her crystals etc. But it's not that, it's someone trying to tell me what to do. Just don't. IRL it wouldn't go well.
Lovely weather. π I'm slowly getting organised for the kids overnight stay, and my pre and post op. Everything takes a really long time and is tiring, but, with John's willing help, we are getting there. On Monday the whole sanitising regime starts. Clean everything. Linen, towels, clothes......
I'm going to do my roots today, as I think it'll be a while before I can bend over easily. Natural blonde again.
Listened to some great podcasts/videos this morning. One from Clutterbug about how to change your mindset about things like cleaning,.and one from Minimal Mom about dealing with household tasks when you are sick, or disabled, or depressed. Excellent. Also about how to help those people. Both on YouTube.
Love Heather UK xxxxxx3 -
Lanette - No, there's no basement or storm shelter, but the house itself is made of stone, and built better than more than a few aboveground storm shelters I've seen... An inside hall is as good as it gets for shelter.
Heather - You're right, I just need to get over the nap thing, and accept that it's a routine that my body wants to follow. Hangover from the working years, I guess, being uneasy about disappearing mid-afternoon every day! πππ And the gyno does know, I expressed my feelings very clearly during my first visit with him a few months ago. Very VERY few women doctors go to work for the VA, unfortunately, and even fewer gynecologists of either gender. He's the only one in a couple hundred mile radius, but because he exists, he's my only option. He is genuinely a very kind, soft-touch doctor with a wonderful manner, treated me respectfully, told me everything he was going to do, had a female nurse with us every minute. I just hate it at near-phobia levels. π€·π»ββοΈ Thanks for the heads up on the deep breath routine, hadn't occurred to me that the box breathing might ramp things up. Will have to try it.
Noni in Alabama - Welcome! On May 31, Barbie will post a link to the new month of June, and we will all start over, as we do every month, with a clean slate. It's helpful to see where we've been, but to start fresh. Glad you're here, drop into any conversation that appeals. We avoid politics and religion, but otherwise widen our focus to the whole woman, family, work for those still working, everything that impacts our daily lives affects our health, and the end goal for all of us is to be healthy.
Jacki - Well done on the weight loss! It's always a boost at the beginning. One big key in most of our journeys has been to evolve eating and exercise routines for ourselves that are sustainable long-term and lifelong. You can do this!
No idea what the day holds--Corey was out cold in his chair by 7:30 last night, feed a hard-working man some pizza π and a few beers πΊπΊ , and suddenly you have a paperweight on your hands! π₯±π΄π€π. Hopefully he continues to sleep, he certainly needs it. Until he's up and around, though, I'm going to get some quilting done. Got my one panel done last night, and finally got some want-to back to get this thing finished!
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in AR

Good morning ladies!
I walked a mile yesterday, and it didn't seem bad. But this morning my muscles are tight. And I am meeting a friend to walk in a local park. Last time I was there the mosquitoes were pretty bad. Well, this is me being reluctant to exercise. I must get over it.
I stayed up late again to finish a book by Laura Griffin. That's my happy time. So I might well take a nap later.
Lots to do before my sister comes on Monday.
I'm going to try to come up with a budget for Dad. At least a picture of current income and expenses. That's critical for planning.
Allie and Lanette, yes I am getting more familiar with the state website. And I found a site that matches sitters and nurses to jobs. It comes back to deciding what we can afford. And whether I really want a stranger in my home.
Hope you all have a relaxing holiday where it's observed. Have fun, and may you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

My exercise the last couple days has been in the garden and moving stuff heavy garden stuff like enormous sleepers.
My husband and I are both sporting bruised knuckles and I've lost a lot of skin off a knuckle and other parts of my hands. No, we haven't been fighting! Well, I guess we've been fighting against gravity with big, heavy garden stuff.
I think I surprised my husband with how easily I handled my end of these sleepers. He wasn't keen on me helping at first, but these things were long and he was struggling, so I picked up an end. To get them onto the roof of our van, I had to hold my end straight up over my head with my arms extended as far as I could. If I were a bit taller, I might have been able to help more, but still, it made the job easier with me at one end of these things than if he had tried to manoeuvre them on his own.
M in Oz4 -
Lanette, Thank you for the book recommendation. I found the first in the series at our library in several different formats so I'll look into it.
Machka, Thank you for the reminder that dental procedures have improved over time.
Heather, I, too, don't like it when someone provides unsolicited advice. Someone once made a comment about people who "give helpful advice to people who are happier than they are"
Lisa, Jake's doctor recommended that he take a nap every afternoon to improve his heart health. Enjoy your naps especially since they are something you couldn't do while you were employed outside your home. Also, don't people in many hot weather areas routinely rest during the hottest part of the day?
We have another drizzly day in store so one more day I won't build dirt hills and plant pumpkin seeds.

Good morning all! Happy (Memorial Weekend for those of us in the USA) Saturday! I have been reading posts daily, trying to keep up with everyone.
Tracey- If the childcare centers in your area are like the ones around here; they are aching for help! You could also look into any school aged summer programs. Then you would get the older kids. The summer program in my area does a LOT of outdoor play/hiking and is for ages 5 yrs through 14 yrs (then they are trained as assistants for the program; if they choose). Good luck on the job search. Ugh on the blisters. I had that happen to me one time. Impromptu charity walk. The worst.
Pip- I ADORE your hair short! It looks so sassy! I understand your feelings about gray. To me gray is a blank canvas that I am itching to get my hands on. lol My gray is coming in slowly and at my temples, mainly. Gives me a very "bride of Frankenstein" look. That's fine, by me. She was kinda kooky stalking around screeching and hissing at people. That is how my inner self reacts to things.
Heather- So glad you got the antibiotic. Now you can relax a bit, breathe and be mentally prepared for your surgery!
Beth- I was so happy to hear about your implant and the results! I was crying happy tears for you. Keeping you in my thoughts and praying/hoping for continued improvements! I have a two year old in my care, currently, who just had his cochlear implant put in a couple of months ago. It has been amazing since it has been turned on, how much he hears and how he reacts to what he is hearing. He runs into the room to see water running, spends hours looking out the windows or up into the trees looking for birds, jumps at every barking dog, noisy/loud vehicle traffic still scares him and he cries often when motorcycles and trucks go by. As a hearing person, we really don't realize how much of what we hear on a daily basis has become "background" noise for us. Hugs friend!
Annie-Our state recognizes live in family members as "caregivers". They can apply on the state website for caregiver payments. It is part of the social services (like childcare) and is offered to those who qualify. This has nothing to do with what a person "has" or their "net worth". If your state has something similar, you could see if you qualify. I am glad your sis is coming and you will have another brain to pick and help make the tough decisions. So hard!
Allie- Well, I am glad Carmine came over to "check in" with family. They are still young; and still see events in life as an affront to themselves. Sending hugs to all with the news of the unborn baby. Tough stuff, for sure!
Machka- The New place is looking beautiful! How long before you move in? Love your coloring and the "work with what you get" mindset.
To all of the new ladies! Welcome! Yes, we are a chatty group! Chime in when you feel like it. We are all reading about your victories (big and small) and your back steps (because it happens) and we are all cheering for you!
There is a new Michigan gal! I can't remember your name, but welcome from the Lakeshore! Grand Haven, here!
I have been all over the place health wise this past month! Making good and bad food/drink choices. Weight is reflecting all of it. UPside: Spring and summer means yardwork which means building muscle. I can deal with that. I quit cooking for my DH and DYS, when they quit providing me with meal ideas or ideas of what they want to eat. SO...I have gone back to protein and veg meals for myself and they can just eat what I make or figure stuff out for themselves. The "guilt" factor here, for me, is HUUUGE. But I am too busy, too old, and too tired to do everything. ON a side note (in the spoiler):The sex with my DH has been FANTASTIC! It is not Viagra and I haven't watched Bridgerton, yet, so it's not that. I kind of just got it into my head that he might be a little easier to live with if I give in to him a bit more; and stop pissing and moaning about how busy/tired I am. WELL! My quiet guy is becoming more adventurous! So, we bought a pool membership and can now hit the high school pool whenever we want. For me, that means 5:30am. DH might go with me; but he likes to swim after dinner, more than early morning. This weekend we will be putting up the new water table feature for the childcare kiddos, we need to put up our garden tipi structure for the kids, we will also trim the dead tree limbs in the back corner of our yard, burn those and other random sticks/branches, lastly we will be painting our shed doors. They look ghastly. Going to need that time in the pool to work out all of the sore spots. ANYWAY...on the whole, feeling pretty good! I feel I am making better choices and back on the path to continue to improve myself.
Whoot! Happy Me! And BONUS: He is also listening to my ideas for my business, getting older, house/home improvement, AND he gave me $$ for new bathing suits and new clothes! All of this without complaining about $$$!! Can a married woman be a "kept" woman to her husband? lol Whatever works, right?
Oh, on the grandson news front: Joaquin has completed first grade! Yea! He got an award: Continuous Questioner This made me laugh. His mom was the same way. I am SO glad she gets to experience this!
Hugs to everyone! I might not have mentioned you; but I am here for you and celebrating, mourning, and thinking of you all daily! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)7 -

Congratulations Allie!
Happy Birthday you old lady, Pip!
Nice to see you KJ!
My son came round to say hello, and I gave him the birthday card I had made. He arrived at the same time as the Waitrose delivery, so was able to help. I used the smoked salmon to make pasta with Philly and crΓͺme fraiche, scallions and peas. Also English asparagus as a side.
The present I had bought for him had arrived from Amazon. Dorset smoked meats, including venison and wild boar.
He has been in training for his cycling holiday in the Pyrenees. Today he did 8 ascents of our local hills, and DDIL has done 10. He still, worries he won't be fit enough for the big ascent, up to 2, 200 metres.
Still have an irritable bladder. I haven't tested, but it may just be irritable. Might test tomorrow if it doesn't calm down. I'll give the antibiotics a couple of days beforei start panicking. Annoying though.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx5 -

Happy birthday Pip
Congratulations Allie-
Nice day so far here. Slept in a bit then went with dh to his mom's. Walked her dog then went shopping- found some great deals on high end wet cat food at both Grocery outlets. (we also found a great deal on some at Black Friday on Monday-the one that sells for $35 for $2 -pull dated in a few weeks but the cats will go through it quickly). The ones we got today were not as great a deal. $2 instead of $10. Now they have a nice variety. Just need to order kitten food- they are eating so much- going through a case very fast.
Came home and had a quick but tasty lunch- home made chicken salad, a slice of pepperjack cheese, a spoon full of tomato/onion/cucumber in vinegar salad, all in a low cal(70 cal) whole wheat pita. 350 calories for the whole thing- very filling.
Went out and cut all the dead roses off of all but two plants. Was getting too warm in my flannel shirt but that was protecting my arms. Was thrilled to see all the raspberries and blackberries showing up. They need to size up a bit more before turning color but will be a nice crop when they do.
Didn't do yard work at MIL's so we will do that Monday morning.
