Heather-I used a shower sear with arms. https://a.co/d/45AfW0K

It is very sturdy. Came in handy during the two surgeries and is easy to move out if way. I think I used for several weeks with each hip.

Machka - This sounds like an unsettling experience, but it looks like you are figuring out how/why it can happen. I find that understanding the reason why for things really helps me to process and takes out some of the sting. Is there a way you can reduce your stress? Do deep breathing to bring in your parasympathetic nervous system? I had to do that with work and it really helps. Or maybe some reframing?

There's a bit of a story regarding my stress ...

Everything was going along relatively nicely and then ...
2018: My husband had a workplace accident which resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury. He was in a coma for 3 weeks, and in hospital for a total of 100 days.
And suddenly I became a carer ... and I am not a natural carer.

He has had a "remarkable" recovery (given that they initially told me I'd need to find him a nursing home) but still has a lot of physical and cognitive issues. Since the accident, he developed epilepsy and has had a mild heart attack. All related, we think. So, he can't work or drive and everything moves slowly and takes a lot of time.

    Over the next 5 years, I ...
    - worked full time
    - took care of my husband by taking him to multiple medical appointments, taking on a lot more around the house, etc. etc.
    - finished my Master's degree
    - and prepared hundreds of pages of documentation for our 2 lawyers in a worker's compensation battle.

There was almost no downtime, lots of very late nights, and not much sleep. If I wasn't at work, I was with my husband and/or working on something for uni or legals or whatever.

December 2020: I graduated and shortly after that the legal stuff really ramped up.

At last, almost a year ago, our case was settled! WooHoo! A few minutes of relaxation!

Then there was a trip to Canada for the first time in 6 years to see my parents and other family. Travelling with my husband required a lot of careful planning and stress. My parents have deteriorated and they would really like me to move to Canada or at least to spend more time there, but I can't right now. And just to emphasize that, my mother had some sort of episode in early December. From way over here, I wasn't sure what was going on because my father couldn't explain it. I'm still not sure.

This past summer (December/January) my husband and I got COVID and I noticed that my husband has deteriorated a bit. The specialists have all told me that he will begin to deteriorate "soon" (right from the beginning they've said "within 5 years") so I'm not sure if that's what's going on or if the COVID really knocked him around. But the gardening he was doing has nearly stopped and I began doing most of it.

Right around the end of January, suddenly it was time to move into an easier place to live. I knew it was coming, but didn't expect it to be now. We currently rent a 2-level house on quite a steep hill and he's been having more and more difficulty getting around. He's had some falls too.

We started enquiring about places and putting in offers, but it's a competitive market here so we missed out on a few. At the beginning of April, we finally bought a house! First house I've ever owned, which is scary for me. It's all one level on a relatively flat lot. But then began the process of renos and moving. We've had the floors done and plan to paint this weekend.

I did most of the prep work this past weekend which was a whole lot more effort than I anticipated!! I've got just a little bit to finish. And I'll probably do most of the painting, but he wants to help, so we'll see how he goes.

He's struggling with the process of moving house. He's trying very hard to help, but he gets so tired, a bit confused, and his short-term memory isn't very good. I explain a lot of things over and over. And things he could do in a couple days pre-accident take him weeks or months now.

Meanwhile at work, I am in a fixed-term position in an area I like so I have been applying for positions to try to stay in that area (which is quite a lengthy process in Australia) and attending interviews. Feels like a whole series of final exams. I do have a substantive position in another area, but I'd prefer to stay where I am.

Then last Friday I was told there might be an audit of what I do. That's OK. I'm prepared, but still ... just a little bit of extra stress on top of everything else. And the migraine began.

I ran across this today and it made me smile.
Not sure if the attribution is correct or not, but we'll pretend it is.

So, speaking of stress ... what do we all do to relax?

    - when I get home from work, I walk our cat on his harness and leash.
    - I colour ... and love all my different pens.
    - I read, especially at night before a weekend day.
    - I sleep in on weekend days.
    - I walk at lunch, and sometimes browse in shops.
    - and sometimes I take photos.

I'm also one who likes to get the stressful stuff done and out of the way, if possible ... even if it takes months or years. I keep working on whatever it is telling myself I'll relax when I'm done.

I was up far too early, 3 a.m. again. The gyno appointment is raising my stress levels further than is really rational. I have just got to do some work on my twisted little psyche about this near-phobic reaction to people touching me. I know the basis of it, but haven't found a tool for myself that allows me to deal with these appointments with anything resembling composure or calm yet. Believe me, I have an arsenal of them at my disposal, from deep breathing to happy places and so on.

I think this morning, I will try to get through a yoga session and a long, hot shower. Perhaps if I get the muscles all as relaxed as possible, I'll tense up less in the situation. It used to work quite well in college if I worked out hard before a key exam. Might throw a nap in there somewhere too - I don't have to leave the house until 1 p.m.

For now, quilting and listening to podcasts.

    Later, my dears,
    Love,
    Lisa in AR

When I am going through an unpleasant procedure (for me, it's dental work or when they removed the skin cancer off my nose last year), I sang Christmas songs to myself.

    All the best!!

Annie - you gave me a chuckle this morning re gyn exam - "Actually it would be weird to enjoy the process." Amen sister. :p Hope you can come up with something to entertain your dad.

Lisa - hope your gyn appointment is over quickly without too much discomfort. Think of England.

Jenn - that chickpea/feta salad looks delicious, thank you for the recipe. I love bean salads. Think I'll throw it together in the coming week.

Margaret - good job on getting so much exercise and activity, plus better eating habits. I agree, it's not until we change what we eat do we start to realize how bad the sugary and overly processed foods was making us feel. Good idea too on calling the Fire Department on the illegal burners. People have done the same in my area. Big shock when the fire engine pulls into the burner's driveway. :p

Aeropress: Do any of you use an Aeropress to make coffee? If so, how do you like it? They seem pretty spendy, even at Walmart, but the coffee maker I'm using right now is a $14 drip one I got at Walmart two years ago, it might be on its last legs. I've sure gotten plenty of use out of it.

Waiting for it to warm up so I can start stacking some firewood in the greenhouse to dry. It got down to 39 at 4 am. Now that the sun is up, it's warming quickly.

Make it a fabulous day! <3

    Breakfast time for the quads!

New one settling in pretty good. I let her out of the playpen for the first time. Hopefully she won't be too hard to catch. She went straight to the screen door and cried then went under the recliner. Hoping she will come out and play with her sisters and brother.

Up too early- cats woke me up at 4:30. One of the neighborhood cats was in the back yard and a few of the inside cats that were in the catio were all growling and hissing at him. Couldn't get back to sleep so got up. Got a few loads of laundry done, cooked some ground turkey w/ taco seasoning and some ground chicken with Italian seasoning.(got it when I helped at the food program. It needed to be cooked beings I let it defrost)

Had a nice dinner with my old friend/former neighbor from 60yrs ago. Was a quick visit- just one hour exactly. Her friends were nice- nice conversation with all.

Not sure if I am going to MIL's or not- he said something about taking her for a hair cut or going to Costco. I am totally fine staying home. I have a lot to get done around here.
We have a show to do on Saturday and the big dessert auction for the youth group at church on Sunday that I need to make at least two or three desserts for. This fundraiser pays for camp.
For sure doing a lemon blueberry cake w/lemon curd filling.
Thinking about doing a big batch of caramel corn-not sure on that one.
Normally I would bake all Saturday then get up early to put everything together Sunday Morning but we will be in Antioch from 8-6 most likely(show is 10-5)

Going to pack up what I can today- get the rest of the stuff we worked on this past week added to the inventory- Hoping we do close to what we did at the last show. We have quite a few new things this time but I don't think he has near as much of the Godzilla stuff which is higher ticket items. We will make it up in volumn.

May take a nap(will need one but not sure if I will be able to sleep-rarely nap and if I do, 10min and that is it). Class tonight.

I picked up an Aeropress at the Black Friday Store a few months ago. Giving it to former hubby as part of his birthday gift along with some different coffees, commuter mug and things like that. He doesn't need to know I didn't pay $70(that is the price of the one I got-looked it up on Amazon). Shipping will cost more than all the gifts that are in the box.
