"...forgot to record 43% of what she'd eaten."

    Yeah, I can see that.

The "doubly-labeled water" or whatever that isotope shake was - wow - that's awesome!

I quite enjoyed watching these videos. If I could have those tests done on me, I would do it. It would be quite interesting to know the results.

The first video is part of a BBC documentary called "How to be Slim" (http://youtu.be/ClU49zn4GG0). A summary of the documentary and the lessons are here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/slim/

I watched it last July and it was a life changer. I learned that:
    1) My weight can't be blamed on slow metabolism
    2) Protein will fill me up for longer
    3) Soup and dairy are good for helping lose the weight
    4) The first step towards a weight loss journey is keeping a diary

The fourth lesson was the reason why I found myfitnesspal and boy, has it made a difference!

I know it's not always a valid excuse but it is true for some.

    Very true.

Same with being born with a tail. Rare, but it happens. Luckily 99.99999999999% of us are born without a tail and just a tail-bone.

Funny how 99.99999999999% of us are convinced that we fit in the 0.00000000001 percentile.

It's time to be honest with ourselves folks.

Isn't that what they call 'heavy water'? Yeah, totally busted them on their overeating. Whenever I hear an obese person going on and on about how they don't eat 'much' I have to bite my tongue severely.

Missing 43% of my calorie intake is nothing I tell you! NOTHING!

    Calories-in, calories-out is a LIE!

    Puhh...

If you ever come across a study that uses 'self-reporting' as it's methods...

Gently ease a giant smile on your face, walk away calmly, and forget everything you just read.

    Oh,
and demand that NSF stop funding poorly designed research studies.

    Genius!
Most studies, study fat people to figure out why they are fat the same series.
Covers researchers who've studied skinny folks to figure out why they are skinny.

Okay metabolism does figure into this. I believe mine is slower than average. BUT I am still slim because I eat less than or close to what I burn.

I've been slim most of my life, mostly because I watch what I eat and exercise. (Got sloppy after kids which is why I am here. And will remain here to maintain). 20 years ago I had a fat friend who would complain about how large she was and how small I was. All while we walked through the party buffet line. My plate had a moderate amount of food. Hers looked like Mount Everest. And it was not because my appetite was smaller. Enough said.

I'd love to get my hands on some Double Labeled Water!

To maintain my weight in the past, I have needed to eat more than any calculator would ever predict, which suggests that either:

    A) I am an anomaly because I have a high metabolic rate

    Or

    B) I am an anomaly because I overestimate what I eat, rather than underestimating.

In reality, which doesn't really matter, I just have to alter my behaviour accordingly, but it would be fun to find out.
