Flea - what a sweet "welcome home" dog face. Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation - Multnomah Falls is beautiful; hope to make it there some day.
Debbie - your lunch (and DH's!) looked delicious. Cute little kittens with those collars - nice idea to tell them apart like that. Glad you were able to catch the "wild" one and bring it into the fold.
Barbara - so happy to hear you can get a "B" team lined up for your water situation. Good to have those contacts just in case. Isn't it amazing what that marine air can do? Nephew from Boulder and his kids are staying somewhere on the Oregon coast, got there yesterday. Hope the marine air sticks around so they can enjoy the beach for a while today.
Heather - good job taking those stairs - getting up from the floor - all those things we used to do so easily and in my case, take for granted. I'm on the same page with your diet recommendations and preferences. The podcasts with Tim Spector and others have had such a good impact on our diets. I love to rewatch them.
Lisa - continued pat on the back and high five for sleeping through the night. Makes such a difference. I was wondering if Corey did some of his job outside in the weather - sounds like he does. How's Patrick doing? Is Corey ready to take time off and turn some of it over to him?
I connected with my sis yesterday about their flight tomorrow. They are OK with eating something "light" here and not driving to town to do the restaurant thing. So I'm just planning a nibbles type things - a simple supper = how I normally eat. Perhaps a big salad topped with olives, a dollop of hummus, pieces of chicken, maybe cheese, artichoke hearts. Will probably grab sliced ham and Swiss cheese if anyone is in the sandwich mode - if they don't want it, I'll eat it this week.
Or may grab a pre-packaged Caesar Salad - I like those dressings. Don't eat it very often because of the additives in that dressing but it's a nice change. With nibbles on the side.
Unknown if nephew and kids will be around to eat here, but will be ready if it happens. It will be a paper plate thing - probably "Merry Christmas". Gotta use them up some time, right?
The Safeway grocery store opens at 5, so I'll be there bright and early tomorrow morning to grab a few things then zip home before the temps start rising. I want my car in the garage but don't put it in there when it's hot - too hard on the A/C. So the plan is to be home when the temps are still in the 50's/low 60's, leave the garage door open for an hour to let the engine cool and heat exhaust. Then button her up.
Shopping real early like that can be a wild card since the employees are frantically restocking the shelves and coolers, especially in the produce and deli section. So we'll see what's available and stay flexible.
That's the report so far. Have a great week, ladies.

Thoughts on moving ...
I've moved a lot and have lived in a lot of different places including long periods of travelling around with my stuff in storage and staying wherever.
The longest I've lived anywhere was Winnipeg in a 2-bedroom apartment for 13 years. When I left, I was ready for a change. I was ready to leave the flat lands and cold winters of Winnipeg and continue my adventures somewhere new.
The place we are leaving now is the second longest time I've lived anywhere ... 10 years. And I can hardly believe we've been here a full decade. That's a long time for me, but it really doesn't seem that long. In many ways, it feels like we've been here just a few years.
Unlike the move from Winnipeg ...I don't feel entirely ready to leave this house and this area. For the most part, I've liked this house, the garden, and the area. I could see myself living here longer. I'm fairly comfortable here. I love the beach less than 1 km away ... I've called it my beach for the past 10 years. So there's a part of me that is crying out to stay.
But we need to go. It's time. I've known since my husband's accident that the time would come that we would have to go to a place that's easier for him and all of a sudden, at the beginning of this year, it was time. As we've packed and as we have been making the move, I've realised that it is actually past time. We should have probably done this 6 month or a year ago, but we weren't ready then.
So here I am with lots of mixed feelings.
A bit of sorrow because I'll miss this house, the garden and area.
A bit of looking forward to the new place ... it really is lovely and there's lots to explore.
And a bit of ... I'm not even sure I can put it into words ... but until the last couple months, I hadn't realised quite where my husband is at now. After the accident, he made improvements for quite a while. Then there came a time period where, when I was asked, I said that he had plateaued. Now, I'd have to say he might have started slowly heading down the hill and there are moments when it scares me.
In the place we are leaving, I often come home intending to work on something, to declutter something or work on a project, but I often feel just simply overwhelmed because there is so much to do. And as my husband has been less able to keep up with things in the garden and downstairs, there is even more to do. The list just keeps growing.
I am hoping that in our new place, with more space around me (the place is a little bigger and a much better layout - use of space), and with a garden that is more manageable for my husband (relatively flat, instead of on the side of a hill), I will feel more motivated.
Motivated to declutter.
Motivated to maintain the space instead of filling it up.
Motivated to exercise with easy walks and cycling possibilities all around.
Meanwhile, I had better go to bed. Another busy day tomorrow!

I was. We were friends for 5 years before we married.
I wasn't going to marry anyone unless he could keep up with me on my long, long, long distance rides. So we did several together during those 5 years, just to see.

Heather ... I agree with your healthy food recommendations and feel best when I eat that way. When I'm tired is when I sabotage my best efforts.
Emptied my mom's storage unit this weekend and brought home the few remaining pieces I had not given away. Temporarily have her lift chair/recliner in my living room (leaving when she gets to a permanent facility) which has pushed the room to over-full. This house is bursting at the seams and it is causing me mental havoc ... just hate it.
Beautiful weather near Buffalo.

Flea Love the pictures of your trip and Pup!
Allie have you tried sprinkling Chia seeds on salad, yogurt. They are high in protein. I top my yogurt with them. I agree when you look at those store bought protein shakes some of the ingredients are questionable and watch the sugar content too. They sneak sugar into processed foods all kinds of ways is it ends in "ose" it is a type of sugar example maltose. Example read what is in a carton of Cool Whip! Buying real whipping cream and whipping it is a better alternative. No sugar added!
Beth Yesterday when I came back home from prepping my son's house for a new roof being out on it today I came back to DrewB several spots of wet poop (11 small spots) on the carpet. She did not use the pee pads I had out. After putting her in a safe place away from me as I started to clean up the mess. First baking soda overnight this morning I had to use use hydrogen peroxide and then my spot bot. After finishing the first clean up. I then reached for a bottle of sparkling mineral water and gave myself two hours to just veg. Then I snuggled with Drew after that on the couch. So rather than reaching for a bad food choice I reach for water and then give myself veg time.
Unfortunately roof will need to be redecked because of the state of the under roof. It now will cost what I thought the cost would be originally so I did budget for it.
I am hoping to sell the transformer collection at a toy sale this Thursday. Getting rid of those boxes all over my son's old room will feel like a breath of fresh air. So I relate Beth. I have a long way to go in the house I have lived in for over thirty years.6 -
Allie ~ I think Miles really enjoys day care! It was probably a great decision for him to be there.
Machka ~ I can feel your sorrow and am saying a prayer for you and your husband as you both adjust to this new life and home.
Beth ~ You have been a wonderful daughter to your mom. Having a house full of stuff is overwhelming.

My daughter-in-law's mom is leaving Atlanta this morning on her 3rd or 4th mission trip to Tanzania, Africa. I am just wishing that she will have a safe trip, visit and return to her home.
I haven't mentioned, but, my knee replacement will be on the 22nd if all goes well. In the meantime, I have to make several dr. visits to prepare. I have been doing exercises for strengthening the legs in hope that my recovery will be easier. I got a dentist appointment to see about the area around the crown I had in June. I am hoping that the dentist will not find any more work that needs to be done.

Happy to be back at sea level in the Willamette Valley
Oh glad you got to visit that amazing Columbia Gorge! My sister used to live in Boardman Oregon so we drove there the summer of the big fire from Hammond on 30. The Falls were closed, and it was a couple weeks after though. I am glad its since been fixed back up. Even on the coast we got the smoke.
Do you know there is a great lodge there in the Gorge somewhere, where they do retreats etc, that was built in the 20's by Mr Meir from Meir & Frank's dept store in Portland? My grandmother was a teenager and worked forthe family there at the lodge.
Mr Meir is the gentleman sitting, and my grandmother is the young gal on far right by window. For many years she did the starching of his shirts (the stories go).

Today’s gratitude: 15 degree temperature drop at sunset, and wow was it a beaut!
Just let word get out at church that you have water/well/cistern/pump troubles and what a lot of helpful advice, support and sound recommendations come your way during fellowhip. Have a strong recommendation for a pump and well company if our water guy should be unable to finish the job. The waiting list will be long, the bill will be high, but at least there’s a plan B.
Terri how long will the grout take to set, when can you shower again?
Michele, thanks for the Genius Gourmet and Elevation protein puff tips. Alas I’ll have to pass. Neither sucralose nor maltodextrin are my friends. Hope your scratchy throat eases soon!
Annie did your dad make it to church?
Lisa I’m just happy to hear you’re able to nap and sleep 7 hours and that the Chron’s is subsiding at last. Hard won peace.
Carla in South Louisiana good Dr. Pepper substitute plan! What do you like to do in the garden? Brava for yoga, and return to normal potlucks.
Heather love how relaxed you sounded about Sue’s visit and that she’s returning in August (with food) to help care for you. Really love your painting, have you ever worked in stained glass?
Margaret, saying “No” to fun but stressful invitations, brilliant! Your success with clean, gut friendly eating is inspiring. What do your sources recommend for alternatives to heartworm preventatives like Interceptor and Heartguard?
Rita you are doing so well with your plates! Sorry your pay booth work is taking such a toll on your back.
Allie I too struggle to get in enough protein, especially when I’m taking a break from dairy. Edamame steamed and salted helps, almost like eating popcorn
Lanette whooshing hopes the heat wave breaks before your sister’s visit. This weather is nutz.
Rebecca “no thank you” are powerful words.
Debbie looks like a great little restaurant. the kittens. Tenshi just melts my heart.
Flea thanks for sharing the pics of your trip and your pooch!. the historic Columbia River Highway, except at 4 am in March when it’s iced over ;}
Pip good talk clearing the air with your brother, well done!
Dia_R so glad to see you posting again, well done on the mowing!
Machka you’ve got to be kidding. I could never be too busy for chocolate. Hope the moving aches and pains ease soon! Thanks for the pepitas reminder, think I have a bag in the pantry, might sprinkle some on my breakfast fruit tomorrow instead of the Kashi.
Proud of me, did my Knee PT/BB&B combo before church and got the dogs down to the powerline after. Too hot to transplant the daphne. Made tuna salad. Packed up my towels etc so I can shower at the gym after BB&B class and before line dancing. If the water guy doesn’t come Monday, Joe will drive over and talk to him Tuesday. Fingers Xd.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Yes! The last time I visited my sister I kind of had to be stern with her, as in the morning she would want to fix me something. I was like no thank you, and she would kind of insist. I had to just state plainly that its only black coffee, and water until noon when I then can eat. We do not discuss intermittent fasting as she things I am a complete loon in doing it. We agree to disagree. There's a lot of subjects we seem to put that label on.🙄
But really its all about respecting each other.

Carol - My very best wishes for your op. You will be transformed!
Machka - Such a hard road you are travelling. Such a complex grief. I dread all this for John one day. His twin sister has dementia, which of course, doesn't mean that he will develop it, but it's not good news. I dread it for myself, come to that.
Beth - I hope something can be sorted out soon for your mother. Your anxiety and grief also must be so deep. It's so exhausting. Can you declutter for a couple of minutes a day? Or one thing at a time? I find 'just one thing' can boost my mood. Well done on getting rid of the storage place!
Margaret - That roof is a big commitment. Good for you. Excellent idea for the toy sale. Like Beth and Machka, our clutter is a sign of our overwhelm. We are just so darn tired of being responsible for others. When we declutter something, it is such a contribution to our own mental health. One less thing to think about and care for.
The cleaner has been. I have napped. On Thursday I have my hospital phone check for my next op. It's been so quick!
Barbara - I wrote my novel 'Windows ' about a stained glass maker, in the early 80s, and it was the first thing I self-published. The metaphor ran throughout the novel. (V adult content.) I'm so sorry for your water worries.

For members with dogs who want to cut down on Flea and Tick, and Heartworm meds...
BarbaraBecasue Drewb has an auto immune condition is why I stopped the Heartworm meds. I did learn if you do flea and tick and heartworm not to give them at the same time.
Heartworm can also be given every six weeks. The reason it is suggested monthly is because it is easier to remember. Also if you live in a colder climate like I do. Once it consistently gets colder than 50 degrees at night you wait six weeks and give last dose until it is again in the spring 50 degrees at night then wait six weeks and give a dose. So if you give heartworm meds it does cut down on the amount you have to give them. I chose none because of her condition. I walk her only when the mosiquito are less like to be out. Late morning and early afternoon and early evening when less risk of mosquito. I also keep her out of tall grass for mosquito and ticks. She also wears a bandana that I apply an essential oil mixture . I also have her tested for Heartworm and parasites. She is a short hair and light colored so the two ticks I found on her this year I got off her quickly. If you use a flea and tick med the tick has to bite your dog in order for them to die. The argument is it kills them before there is a risk of disease. I do keep some of the Heartworm med on hand it I notice she is over exposed to mosquitoes! I then will give her the meds six week after exposure. The meds kill what the dog is exposed to six weeks before.3 -
The community is acting weird for me this morning. First, I had to log in, then it came up in Russian with no way to make it English!! Rebooted my iPad and now working ok. Not sure what happened. I’m going to have to run a cleanup and a virus check on my iPad I suspect! Yesterday, I got an email from Amazon saying someone was trying to log into my account. DH didn’t and neither did I, so had to change that password again this morning. Will do that here too after the cleanup. Best do my phone and laptop while I’m at it!!
DH’s Pasta Fazool, slice on honey wheat bread and butter with plum for desert. Topped it with Parmesan cheese too but took the picture before the Parmesan. Break was instant oatmeal, low sugar apple/cinnamon, with butter and almond butter and a 1/2 banana. Supper/snack was peaches on a biscuit with cool whip, an Oikos triple zero yogurt, and a Lindy’s Italian Ice. I know, too much prepared foods and sugar but still under my calorie allotment by 104 calories!

Machka - many, many hugs. It's so hard physically and emotionally to move from a place you really like - even love. I went through this when we sold the farm, for DH's health reasons. I had similar thoughts, and sometimes still have tremendous sadness - I loved that way of life, as hard as it was. I have to remind myself it's just part of life and part of the process and I can't live in the past. And I have so much to be grateful for right now.
I'm really hoping once you get moved, your DH's condition will stabilize and maybe even improve a bit. Some new and different challenges to negotiate perhaps? Our move gave my DH a boost.
Carol - good luck at the dentist, and thank you for the heads up about your knee! The week of July 22nd will be a busy one for us ladies with you doing the knee thing on the 22nd and Heather's new hip on the 26th. Best wishes on all of this for you ladies!
Beth - Sure hoping a spot for your mom opens up soon and you can get some space in your house back. Can be so overwhelming to deal with all of this right now.

Hello, my chicks,
Productive morning, trying to get everything outside done that I can before the rain gets here... that's been pushed out to about 1:30, so I had more time than I originally thought.
My puttering - pretty boring:So when I walked the last bag of trash down to be picked up, there was a ginormous branch down from the tree just behind the mailbox. So I dragged out the big zero-turn mower and threw a lasso of paracord on it, and dragged it all the way to the back to the burn pit.
Since I was dirty already, I wanted to get all the dirty work done! So I harvested both kinds of basil, as well as the parsley and oregano and got those all rinsed down and in the fridge to stay cool. When I'm ready, I'll clean all the stems off and put the leaves in the freezer in ziploc bags with the air gently squished out.
You just toss them in a tiny amount of oil to coat them, and they'll freeze well for six months to as much as a year. Just a hint if you buy fresh herbs in those silly bundles that are more than anyone needs. Lots of ways to store those to use at a later time. Once they're frozen, you can just break off what you need for cooking and keep the rest frozen.
Then I got the hummingbird feeders and the sunflower seed feeders filled up--when Corey built the sunroom, he built a full four-foot overhang, which is great for hanging up the bird feeders, so they can get to them even when it's raining. The seed eaters are messy little buggers, but that's OK, absolutely worth it to watch their antics.
And I got some repotting done. My poor jacaranda - it's been most unhappy and may not make it, but not because I didn't try! It was the only one of the bonsai seeds that made it at all, none of the others made themselves into plants. Those kits are kind of a rip.
Then I moved the pothos into the pot that held the aloe vera. Didn't even know you COULD kill aloe vera, but I did. I hid the body and rinsed the bad karma out of the pot, hopefully, and decided to start again. The aloe vera just leaned right over and expired, poor thing. Well, at least the pothos love me. Then again, they're pretty hard to kill.
At least the the outside plants are all thriving! The vinca and blueberries really are holding up to a very sunny spot - and the morning glories are coming on a treat.
When I went out to fill the hummingbird feeder, I was able to stand still just a few feet from a hummingbird getting a long drink. So seldom you see them sit still... so lovely. Always feels like a hug from my mama. Next Tuesday is 25 years since she died. I miss her still, but the ache fades, in the end, and the joy of who she was remains--the hummingbirds bring that back.
Heather's got the right of it, I think, pegging the grief that you caretakers go through. My mother's passing was less than 24 hours from when she fell and hit her head (at 72) to when she took her last breath. She was terrified of dementia, and being put in care, so we all knew it was the way she would have chosen to go. It didn't help at the time, but it brings comfort now.
On another note, Thursday is also 44 years since I married my first husband in a registry office in Bury St. Edmunds, UK. SMH.
Not sure why I just jumped in the WABAC Machine, but let's jump back out, shall we?
Just sending lots of hugs to those who care so much for those you care for. Possibly my top two fears in life are losing Corey and losing my mind to dementia. I don't dwell on them, or sit and worry about them, as Barbie's quote said, worrying about the future doesn't help and ruins the present. I just acknowledge that they exist and go on.
Time to walk down and check the mail!
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

MFP Weekly Check-in July 8, 2024
Rita in Roswell, NM - Lost 1.2 pounds this week. I checked my macros and I’ve been hitting those correctly with this change in eating. I’m eating what I like and loving it!
Debbie in Napa Valley, CA - weight went back up again. 149.4 Back to tracking today.
Sue in WA - I really need to get a better handle on the sugar. It is indeed addictive at least for me. I lost about one half pound this week but it was a struggle. I am continuing with the Healthy Heart class through Calm Health. One of the exercises was to answer the question "why do I want a healthier heart?" It has been interesting to dig into that. Trying to come up with healthy meals that don't heat up the house during preparation.
Barbara on the southern Oregon Coast - Better than yesterday:
Move: steps and PT 4/7
Fuel: sugar 4/7, CI<CO 5/7, AF 6/7
And down 0.9 lbs
Evelyn on Vancouver Island - Another hot sunny day on the island! I’ve tracked this week and have either hit my calorie target or come in just over and, surprise surprise, I’m down a pound! Yay!
Lanette SW WA State – Weight gradually trending down. 7 lbs in 4 months by controlling carbs (under 100 grams most days) & eliminating sugar, “white” starches and processed foods. Continuing with stretching and PR exercises for back: cat/camel & bridging. Daily Farmer’s walk with 8# weights & sunrise walk early each morning, 15 to 20 minutes.

Yesterday - Corey watched the wind take this one down at our little wellhouse - the limbs are too big for my little chainsaw to handle. Life in the country. Something's always falling down!

Tracey--Beautiful scrapbook.
Add my name to the list that doesn't watch the news. Nothing I can do most the time and getting upset is not the answer. We listen to christain radio music most the time. DH watches Nascar and car shows. we watch baking and cooking contest shows.
Flea--Beautiful pictures, thank you for sharing.

Hello all
Back from picking up just a few groceries , surprised Doris with some maple walnut ice cream ,and she had a big ol bag for me for my birthday
She gave me 100.00 in Amazon gift cards and a kitty note pad and a find the cat book and
This picture..
Her husband Harold ,who I loved dearly he passed 35 years ago made this in Japan, they had a maltese named Timmy then he was air force and retired and worked for Pratt and Whitney before passing away at 60 yrs old from lung cancer.
Please keep my brother in your thoughts ,he isn't dealing well with the break up of his marriage well..6 -
Heather ... yes, I can declutter one bit at a time. Starting with the Peace Lily plants ...Margaret might understand... that were given to me 3-1/2 years ago when my son died. I've honored them, watered them and cajoled them to live long enough. They're now ugly and they're going.
I would have this house decluttered in a heartbeat if I didn't live with two guys (husband and adult son) who keep and apparently have emotional attachments to everything. I am not of the same mind.
Beth9 -
That's a beautiful picture, Rebecca. Do you know where on 30 the lodge was located? On the west side of crown point Vista house, there was some kind of women's retreat center, but it was well off the highway, so I couldn't see if it was a lodge.

BethSame for me I let go of two of The Peace Lily I got when son passed away. When DH passed I got one from a pair of friends one of them said they had a brown thumb but thought I would like it because I love to garden. I never told her how they are one of my least favorite house plant and why. It still is doing well so I am keeping it for now. So yes Beth I do understand! I just associate them too much with funerals. That is why I took fresh flowers from my garden to my friend's service. They should last about a week and then off to the compost pile. Less to take care of!7
