Hi I'm Darlene and have been with this group for a while - it was the first "challenge" I joined on MFP, so holds a special place in my heart. I am 64, married, (Greg - 37 years), one adult daughter (Allyson), one pup - Monty the Goldendoodle. I retired in 2020.

For the new people I write a reflection on how my prior month's weight loss journey went. Here is mine from August for anyone that cares to read.

    August Reflection

The highly anticipated terrible August came and as expected was kind of a wash. I had a wonderful time – but it is now time to get at it. Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly truth.

First and foremost, I lost 1.1 pounds this month. My steady shrinking is still in play – I have lost every month since I started this weight loss journey. That being said, I made it by the skin of my teeth My birthday, girls trips, and anniversary all happened this month. Phew!

Exercise was better this month. I got the green light to start unseated exercise again in August and gradually increased my steps to an average of about 12-14K steps per day.

I reached the 1,700-mile marker on my quest to walk 2,024 miles in 2024, logging about 200 miles this month, as we speak am at 1,720 miles. My tracker says that I hit my goal in Mid-October. My second goal of hitting 2,024 intentional miles is coming along – currently at 1,337 miles, 66% of the goal. It’s just shy of where I should be (67%), but if my body holds up – I can do it.

I am more determined than ever to get this done, and I hope that September will get me to the ideal BMI range (just 2.5 pounds to go). Then as I mentioned last month, will see where I end up as my goal weight when I get there - 100-pound loss or January 8, 2025 (my two-year starting date) whichever comes first.

My before and after pictures for August - not the best pictures - but didn't take too many in August.

    kd1o1lhxc3hu.png

    My Goals for September:
    • Get to ideal BMI Range (140 pounds)
    • Alternate Cardio and Strength
    • Average 14K Steps per day
    • Continue Physical Therapy Knee exercise – every other day
    • Make up miles for intentional 2,024 in 2024 to ensure that I make it

    👣📝🥗🕛💪🫀🦵🧘‍♀️💦🧂

    Week One
Sep 1- 142.5 📝🥗💪🦵💦🧂I had a set back with my knee yesterday. Switched my strength exercise to a seated one, and couldn't get on the treadmill without pain - so was below my step goal. Iced and went to bed early - feel better this morning but will take it easy today - going to call it my rest day! Did my budget and my reflection (both not pretty this month).

Sep 2 - 142 😁👣📝🥗🫀💦🧂Knee is feeling much better, iced whenever I was sitting on my bottom in front of the tube! Got my intended exercise done, a little bit of cleaning done. A productive day.

Sep 3 - 142 👣📝🥗💪🦵💦🧂Beautiful day in CT. Got in our normal AM walk, then cleaned out the front garden. I weeded out the front flowerbed, getting ready to plant some fall mums. Picked some basil and made some tomato/basil sauce - it was just ok. Next time, add some more spice. Then it was bingo night with mom. I didn't win, but won the half time trivia contest and the door prize - I'm rich $20 (I spend $30). LOL! Mom was in a grouchy mood - her hip is bothering her AND she didn't win. ☹️

Sep 4 - 143.1 👣📝🧘‍♀️💦🧂 Let's just say I did to myself and I'm not proud about it. It was one of those can't sleep days, and binged while I was up. I know it's temporary if I can turn it around today. I am not going down this road again where I get close and then sabatoge myself.

Sep 5 - 143 👣📝🥗🫀🦵💦🧂Another night of no sleep, didn't binge - but did eat late. I justified it because I had calories left in my day - so today adding another tracker to my list - eat within my eight hour window. I have an orthopedic appointment for me knee today, hoping another shot will help with the soreness.

Sep 6 - 142.5 📝🥗🕛💪💦🧂Orthopedic appointment well ok. Dr is submitting a request to insurance for a gel injection. It is supposed to last about 6 months. We talked about another cortizone shot, but she thought this might be a better for me. We discussed surgery again for the meniscus tear - but she doesn't think that is the best solution at this time - the repair could make the arthritis pain worse. Also talked about just using over the counter ibuprofen - but I don't like that option. Allyson's diswasher wouldn't drain, so we went to her place after the appointment - the motor is shot. Picking up a new one and installing today. Then tonight Allyson is coming for the weekend - celebrating Greg's birthday - dinner tonight and we are going to see a play tomorrow. I'll try to stick to the plan!

Sep 7 - 142.5 👣📝🥗🕛🫀🦵💦🧂Happy with that number. We ordered in for dinner in - asian. Did well, ate 1/2 my entre - some endamame, and a spring roll and then a Yogurt Sundae (greek yogurt with mixed fruit, whipped cream, and some granola on top) for dessert. I tracked as good as I could and with my light BF and Lunch came under! I'm out again today - going out to lunch before we go to the play - checked out the restaurant and know what I am going to order - Arugula and Beet salad with goat cheese. Expect a rise tomorrow from the two days out - fingers crossed it won't happen.
    Week Two
Sep 8 - 142.4 👣📝🥗💪💦 Had a wonderful time yesterday. Started the morning with our usual walk, it was a cool morning, the leaves are just beginning to turn, lots of acorns on the ground. We met a family with two golden doodles on our walk. I always think we should get another. Dad says no way.

We went out for lunch and my plan for the beet salad was squashed - not on the actual menu (just on the internet). I had a wedge salad instead. Greg and Allyson ordered some pretzels for an app - I had one bite. Then Greg and I split a Tirimisu (I ate most) for dessert.

The play was phenomenal. One of the best that I have seen in a long time. Great music, and ALL the cast was so talented, not just the lead. It's based on the true story scottish born singer-songwriter Johnny Reid's grandmother of a coal miner's widow raising three boys with the help of her close knit friends.

Today - one more day of celebrating Greg's birthday. The Friends of Lake Pocotopaug is a group in my town that's mission is dedicated to the improvement of the Lake Pocotopaug and its environment. They are having a wine tasting fund raiser. There is an island in the middle of the lake, a privae island available for rent. It has a main lodge and five guesthouses. We have floated my many times but have never been on it. The tasting is on the island. Looking forward to it. There is a snack with it (I'm expecting cheese) and will call this my lunch.

Sep 9 - 144 👣📝🥗🕛🫀🦵💦 The weekend festivities caught up to me - although I stayed under my calorie limit - being over my sodium limit a couple days in a row will get me every time. I will need to flush it out for the next few days.

Sep 10 - 143.3 👣📝🥗🕛💪💦🧂Bingo night with Mom, resisted the goodies - noone won! Had a hearing test done yesterday, getting my hearing aides adjusted this morning. A little worse than last time - par for the course. Then not much going on - guess it's a housework day!

Sep 11 - 142.3 👣📝🥗🕛🫀🦵💦🧂Nice swish this morning. Hearing aids adjusted, doesn't sound any different to me - but will have to do. Today getting my gel injection, then we are going to see Reagan this afternoon. It's Greg's actual birthday today.

Sep 12 - 141.7 😁 📝🥗🕛🫀🧘‍♀️💦🧂Another nice swish today and my first smile in a while. Rest day yesterday; my knee was pretty sore after the injection. I got in a small zumba workout later in the day, and did a seated stretch workout as well. I really enjoyed the movie. Dennis Quaid and Penelope Miller did an outstanding job playing Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Today we are going out on the boat with my sister and brother in law. Trying to soak in the last of summer while its here. It is supposed to be a beautiful day here today, high of 80, sunny, light winds.

Sep 13 - 141.4 😁 📝🥗🕛🫀💦🧂Beautiful day on the water yesterday, then out to lunch. I had a salad with grilled chicken, and then had a light dinner to make up for it. I missed my step goal again, and also didn't do my knee stretches which was in my plan. My knee was/is pretty sore still from the injection. Although I did earn this trophy yesterday that I was happy about - 1800 miles in my quest for 2,024 in 2024 (walking not running).

Sep 14 - 141 😁 👣📝🥗🕛💪🦵💦🧂Another nice day in Connecticut. Went for our morning walk. Then went out for another ride on the boat, trying to take in the last days of summer. Got my steps and workouts done. Cleaned a little, all in all a good day.

    Week Three
    👣📝🥗🕛💪🫀🦵🧘‍♀️💦🧂

Sep 15 - 140.7 😁👣📝🥗🕛🫀💦🧂 Got it all done, nice walk in the AM, cleaned the bathrooms, relaxed a little soaking in the sun, then did my workouts in the afternoon. I tried a new Youtube channel that @lislisa123 (thank you) recommened in another group that I am in - it was fun. I like the ones that they don't talk through the whole workout. I did one with 5,000 steps.

    https://www.youtube.com/@IngridKick

Sep 16 - 141.2 👣📝🥗💪🦵💦🧂Sleepless night, ate outside my time. Still under on the calories, thnking my body is adjusting. I tried a new skinnytaste recipe yesterday that was yummy, but higher in carbs than I am used to. Perhaps that was it. Today we are getting the driveway sealed, so Greg won't be joining me on my walk this morning. Just Monty and Me! . I will miss him, the morning conversation makes the time go by so fast! Here is the Skinnytaste receipe - homemade Hamburger Helper. The Skinny Taste receipe uses low fat cheese, reduced fat milk (I used skim), and just a 1/2 tsp salt. Although the calories are higher than I usually have for dinner, the serving size is 1 1/2 cups. I was satified with a cup.

I doubled the onion and garlic (we like it), and used tomato paste instead of sauce. Also, I cooked the noodles the 8 min in the broth (it calls for 8-10 min) and then the second cooking time with the milk just ONE minute (not the 8-10 it says). The noodles were just right - in IMO if you cooked it as written they would be way to mushy. Next time I might add some canned tomatoes or some fresh peas in at the end for color. Very tasty - and plenty of left overs for lunch, or tonight's quick dinner before I head out for Bingo night with Mom.

    https://www.skinnytaste.com/recipe-index/?_search=hamburger+helper

Sep 17 - 140.9 👣📝🥗🫀💦🧂Nice night at bingo. Everyone won (something). Mom won twice - which put her in a great mood! My older sister and I each won a game, and my younger sister won the half time trivia game, plus the door prize. I came home with $20 more in my pocket! LOL! I did indulge in a bag of Sun Chips that was calling my name - didn't put me over calories or my sodium goal, but did put me outside my eating window. I am much better at resisting the sweet goodies on the table - but my younger sister brought a variety bag of chips! It's a good thing I left some wiggle room!

Sep 18 - 140.5 😁 👣📝🥗🕛💪🦵💦🧂Quiet day yesterday, other than my walk in the morning spent most of it at home - pretty much the same planned for today except a quick run to the grocery store for a few things. I finished binge watching Outlander on Netflix and will need to wait until 2025 for Netflix to get the next season. I know it is on on STARZ, but I'm not paying for any more TV! Now I noticed that the next season of Call the Midwife is on - so that is my next treadmill show!

Sep 19 - 140.2 😁👣📝🥗🧘‍♀️💦🧂As expected a nice quiet day at home. I did have a restless night, and ate outside my window - but still under calories. Tonight we are going to an open house at a condo complex that I have been looking at for a long time. They look beautiful, single level, pool, exercise room. This not the one - some have garages and that is something we want to hold the toys and this one does not. But I want to go inside one, they look so different in person than they do on the computer. I also want to pick up the rules and regulations - can't find them online and hoping that they allow you to park a boat in the complex. Greg is still holding out for a house - but we have been looking for three years and haven't found one.

Sep 20 - 141.2 😕 👣📝🥗🕛🫀🦵💦🧂I can't explain it. I was hoping for a big Woo Hoo getting into the 130's today (and in the normal BMI range) and instead I get a pound increase. Got everything done, and then some. Hoping it reverses itself tomorrow AM - my official weigh in day. I bought Greg (and myself) kayaks for his birthday. They arrived Wednesday, and we took them out for the first time yesterday. I could never have done this two years ago, and who would have thought that I would think it was fun. I should take that as a win! Never made it to the condo open house - too pooped, and Greg said since we aren't going to buy it - let's stay home.

@koeitjiesa Yahoo you to do - getting to the 77's!

@ozdeelite Sorry to hear about your health issues, thinking that leaving the stressful job will be a good thing for you. It is so important to take care of you - then you can take care of others. By the way - Your looking good too - down 2 KG already this month; just fabulous!

@deepwoodslady Well at least you know what it is, and they are monitoring it. The article did mention that it was easier to handle when it was new - so glad they found it early.

Hi all. I already feel healthier switching back to smoothies - berries for antioxidants, and greens 🥬. With kidney issues I might need to stop drinking coffee which is cruel because I love coffee!

It’s going to be awhile before I know exactly what is happening- kidney functioning at 42% is not good at all. Anaemia is treatable I think and hyperthyroidism also but I’ve still got to have more blood tests before I get referred to a specialist.

@ozdeelite I am keeping you in my prayers. My husband was a dialysis patient as well as my father and my grandmother way back in the day. I will pray that your kidney's will kick back into better numbers and functioning for you.

    09/18-192.4-(Trend Weight 192.3)-

09/19-194.6-(Trend Weight 192.6)- I got home so late last night that I didn’t have time to actually post but I did weigh yesterday morning and today so I’ve documented the weights. It was a long day doing the medical trip for my eye issues. My eye issues will eventually require surgery but it’s very risky and they want to wait until it is absolutely necessary so I’m to go back for rechecks every 6 months. The condition “eye pucker” is more common in women than men and is actually caused by old age. It’s an actual wrinkle in the back of the eye caused by an eyeball collapse of sorts. Old age….Humph. It’s more common in women because we usually live longer. They said I am pretty young (age 64) to have this condition but my eyes are aging more rapidly due to T2 diabetes. The surgery would involve removing the jelly in the back of my eye, pulling up a pucker and then filling the gap with an air bubble. What the scan looked like was an even line like a beach of sand going straight across and then suddenly a big triangular sink hole was in the center then back up to the straight beach line again. That sinkhole needs to be pulled back up. I will put a link below with what I found when I googled it this morning for anyone interested. I had never heard of this condition. I also have the start of a cataract in both eyes pretty evenly. That will also wait the doctor said as they are just beginning. Also, I have a large floater. Good news is that he did not find any bleeding vessels the other doctor told me I had. Gosh, this T2D has really wreaked havoc on me. Avoid it at all costs my friends! I was first diagnosed in 2007 when I quit smoking and very quickly gained a lot of weight. This makes losing weight all the more important to my body. I’m proud of how far I’ve come since then (I weighed 253 at one point for a very long time). However, I still have quite the road ahead. I’m planning a very careful day today to offset the overnight gain from yesterday’s trip. More travel tomorrow to my son’s dental which is about 75 miles each way. Lunch will likely be out again. I’ll try to keep it to one meal although it’s going to be another long day as I have quite a few things to do in that town in relation to my renovation. He’s the link I mentioned:

09/20-193.4-(Trend Weight 193.4)- Travel today and then a quiet weekend. . I hope to be able to string some good days together with diet and exercise after the dental trip today for my son. My DGS I normally babysit for Thur – Sun fell off the jungle gym at school and got a compound fracture in his arm. He will be with his mom and dad all weekend as they await information on when he can be casted. Since they are no longer together, I hope they will get along okay spending the weekend together. My DGS had to be sent 4 hours away to a specialty children’s hospital to have it set which luckily did not require a surgery after all. Please keep Owen in your thoughts & prayers.
