SEPTEMBER 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.

We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.

Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until September 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!

After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).

Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:

To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):

Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:

I’m aiming for 200km again this month. Hopefully having five Sundays (Sunday long run) will help me achieve this. Fingers crossed.7

Going for 170 miles for September.
Aiming for all 30/30 days in September. That'd take consecutive streak to 84... And then, hopefully cross the Hundred mark in Oct.
Also... I'm on 1362.9 miles for the Year-to-date.
With two-thirds of the year now complete, for me to complete 2000, I would need to be on 1333.3 miles. I'm above that.
Conscious that I'm away over Xmas/NYE in Costa Rica... So Im gonna lose upto a couple of weeks there. I want to be at or very close to 1900 at the end of November.

I'm not sure what Sept will bring - with jury duty hanging over my head. But, for a start, I am going to aim for 70 miles of running/fast walking. I can always modify it down if I see I need too.7 -
I think I am going to plan on 120 miles for a goal. It should be nicer weather or at least a little cooler I hope. I forgot to mention this morning's run was really fun as my neighborhood was apparently chosen for today as several running groups routes. So I saw a lot of runners out and there were water stops for them also. It was very inspiring seeing so many folks out.8

The last Sunday is my marathon and I need to step back on the mileage to let my body recover a bit from August, plus my taper, so I am going to say somewhere between 250/270km for the month depending on whatever my body needs.8

Just getting back into it so I am not setting a distance goal. My goal is to simply put on running clothes and hit the road four times a week. Just going for the consistency of showing up first.12

I’m going to keep my goal the same as August at 50 miles. Hoping for cooler temperatures for me to get outside more.8

Right, September and spring are off to a great start with 14km on the board. I usually like to get my running done in the morning but it’s Father’s Day so things were shuffled to allow for brunch with the in-laws. When we got home at about noon it was really sunny and very warm and humid (we had huge thunderstorms overnight and there is still lots of surface water). So I mucked about until 4pm waiting for it to cool a little but it didn’t really. It’s only now, at close to 6pm, with the sun gone that the chill returns. So weird how the temperature can jump so quickly.6

Again the Garmin plan doesn't show the full calendar, so don't know how many miles to put down for the month. I guessed pretty accurately last month, so I'll guess 90 miles and see how it goes.9

I’ll aim for 50 miles this month (being optimistic). New goal is to walk at least 1 intentional mile every day, so I plan to get back to posting here daily. Hopefully cooler temps are on their way by the end of this month.

After walking around the ruins of Delos and then the streets of Mykonos, Greece, I had an hour before the ship sailed so I changed clothes and got back off the boat and ran two miles. I had time for a couple more but got nervous and didn’t want to miss the boat!Ruins of ancient amphitheater

It was 3.06 miles for me today. Yesterday I ran a 5K race and wasn't as stiff as I thought I would be.
In my age group, 70+, I finished 7th of 7.
My friend P, in the ladies' 70+ age group, won.
It's good to have a brand new month.8 -
7.2 to start the month. Had not planned on it but then my apple watch challenged me to get 7 75 miles a day running/walking 14 times so there it was in my face! 🤷♀️😳🤷♀️🤪 I got a late start but we had a nice breeze from the north and it was not excessively hot so altho I was a little stiff at first my pace improved throughout.
This months' question for everyone. At what age did you first lace up some sneakers and try a run? And what was your inspiration?
I will say I was about 17 and altho I was fairly fit from playing collegiate tennis that first jog around a qtr mile track was a real eye opener. My inspiration was getting accepted into West Point USMA and they told us we needed to be able to run 2 mile in 18 minutes during "summer" camp. Ok - beast barracks. 😳😳😳 I had absolutely no training and no way except a manual stopwatch to see how fast I was NOT going.

@Teresa502 Sounds like a lot of walking and site seeing. Love the pictures. I'm not sure what that lunch is either, but it looks good. Excellent discipline getting off the ship and running 2 miles when you had an "hour to spare."
@emptydog Congrats on your 5K and your friends age group win.
Great start to the month @SummerSkier . I really can't remember the first time I tried to run. I do remember "racing" my brother when we were young. He was thin and had long legs, and, well, was a guy. He'd give me a half lap head start and still beat me. So that was a bit deflating. I guess, like you, I really didn't start "running" until I had to when I went to Officer Training School for the AF. Fortunately, they were softer on us and we just had to make it two miles, with the first mile under 10 min, I think. Still hated it and just ran when I had to.

I did a treadmill walk at 3.8 mph after church and before lunch.6 -
No distance in mind just happy to be motivated to get out there. Nice easy runs, no speed or hill work, no pressure.

I'm going to say 140 miles for September.
I started the month off with an 11 mile run. It was 74° and 100% humidity when I started out. So I just took it slow and easy. Today was the first day of dove season and I could hear lots of gunshots. I just made sure to stay in town. I'm not sure if I will run tomorrow or not. It's a holiday so I don't have to work but the forecast is calling for thunderstorms. I'll probably just take a rest day. I did register for the Half Marathon on November 9th. It is the Half Crazy Half Marathon and apparently there are some crazy hills.
@SummerSkier I was 48 when I first started running. I can't remember exactly what day, but it was around the middle of September, so I guess this month will be my 8 year runnerversary. I came on mfp in September 2015 because I was tired of being fat and tired all the time. My youngest had gone off to college so I started walking the dog and counting calories. I never thought I would ever want to run, but after I hit my weight goal I decided to give C25K a try. I was surprised by how much I ended up loving running.

@Teresa502 I second @AlphaHowls about the dessert . Good job getting out for a run on land AND making sure not to miss the boat. I think I would get nervous as well about cutting it too close.
@SummerSkier We used to have to run a mile for P.E. class in school (I think 6-8th grade). I always walked the majority of it, until my neighbor was in my P.E. class with me. For some reason, with her there I was able to jog all the way till the end and that gave me a huge confidence boost. Then, when I found out the summer before high school that my friends were planning to be on the cross country team, I decided to go out on a run with them. They basically left me huffing and puffing in their dust, while they were casually chatting away. For some insane reason, I couldn't wait for more and joined the team. Although I was never one of the fastest on the team, after getting fit, I also wasn't one of the slowest and loved every minute of it. I am still friends with them to this day and I see them whenever I am in the US.
After my race on Saturday, I am so surprisingly sore! And not from the running but from all of the obstacles that I was completely unprepared for. I thought about ditching my run this morning, because my arms and abs hurt so bad, and my knee is still swollen, but after warming up I felt great and went on a very pleasant 15.1km run to start off the month.
My long run is planned for tomorrow. I am striving to run the last 8miles at marathon pace. As I have been having issues running at that pace, tomorrow should be a good test as to whether or not my marathon goal is realistic or not. If I can't sustain that pace, I need to readjust my expectations a bit so that I can have an obtainable goal.

I think I will pick the same target as last month (40 miles/64.3k), as my Garmin Coach is likely to taper down before ‘race day’ (29th Sept). I wonder if I should actually go do a Park Run on the day, instead of a solo virtual race?

I decided to leave my son having a lie-in as he’d been to football and a 7.k night race last week, but I used his route alongside the canal. As it was all unfamiliar I managed to keep to a zone 2 for a very happy and easy run to start the month.
@SummerSkier, I took up running on 20th June 2024, prompted by reading this thread and wondering if I could ever run 5k without walking any of it. Turns out that I can - several times a week!My PR’s:

WOW! I love reading all the stories about starting running and why. I also think I have to credit long term running with the ability to not be obese (even tho I gained and lost the same 20-30 pounds all my life until this last time in 2017) But what's different now is that I don't see running as a way to lose weight but rather as a way to keep from being immobilized, to keep my brain clear, and also to improve my tennis. And the best reason to run now? The cool new technologies we have - shoes, watches, etc... Even the rechargable running lights. Kids are so lucky these days and don't even know it. 😳🙃
I also don't know if the older folks among us took up running later because it was not something elementary or jr high school encouraged (at least for women). I grew up during the tennis revolution but except for field hockey or lacrosse there was not a high visibility for track or cross country. Heck even in college there was not any "training" for running that I can tell. And I was a slow and have always been a slow runner. When I was not able to keep up at school (imagine running in combat boots holding an M14 rifle and a pack on your back?) the "training" was just to assign a really good fast runner to me and have them make sure I ran every day. No program or way to improve.
It's sort of rainy out this morning but I think I am going to find an older pair of shoes and hit the road as it is not lightninging and I have a day off.7
