My sleep is better than it was...I have less leg cramping now than I did. I place a small piece of surgical tape across the middle of my lips to encourage me to breathe through my nose. I use breathe right strips to open my breathing through my nose. In losing the thirty pounds my double chin is almost gone. The biggest result from doing this was getting my blood pressure under control without medication. I was 140/85-90. Now I am 120 or lower on top and less than 80 on the bottom. I just feel better too! Breathing through your nose gives your body more nitric oxide which in turn is beneficial to your vascular system (thus fewer leg cramps and lower blood pressure)
I was not able to use the surgical tape until I got rid of my chronic sinus infection. It was changing my diet that helped me get rid of that infection.
I still am on my higher plant based diet. I do eat some meat, dairy is plain yogurt(good quality and or home made) or good quality cheese. Fermented foods like Kombucha, Kimchi, Sauerkraut, Occasional pickle. Little to no grain (NO wheat) If I take a vitamin I do so with food. I just learned some vitamins need the other phytonutrients from food to be effective and/or not toxic. Too much of some vitamins is toxic.
I just read the vitamin craze started with Linus Pauling, a Noble Prize winner. He got fixated on Vitamin C being the cure for many ills. He and his wife took mega doses. His wife died of stomach cancer which they believed the massive amounts of Vit. C contributed to it.
I do not count calories. I count the veggies, herbs, and spices on my plate. It is very high fiber. If one decides to go the high fiber route take it slow and slowly add fermented foods to help better digest the fiber.
I am currently 150-158 pounds on a 5'7" frame. Little to no joint or other pain in my body. Weight has been steady for six months.
I no longer miss the cakes, cookies, pasta made with wheat, deep fat fried food, and other highly processed food. I do not feel deprived in the way I eat. The side effect of feeling so good and other signs of health outweighs any desire to go back to old habits.4 -

Happy Valentine's Day
Margaret6 -
Rebecca from Texas ... Welcome!
Cindy ... I weigh most mornings (sometimes I forget) and use the number as a guideline. I can do a lot of damage to my weight loss efforts by conveniently ignoring how much I've eaten when I don't weigh regularly. The daily number keeps me honest. I also have the most success with weight loss when I'm adhering to intermittent fasting ... which in my case is really just restricting the time of day that I eat to 2:00 - 7:00. Works like damage control! I've lost 60 pounds from my highest weight, but still need to lose about 60 more. Right now I'm working on eating more whole foods (less junk/processed) and exercise. It's a slow process but I'm ok with that!
Husband and I took a day trip to a maple syrup farm on Tuesday. Long, winding drive through farm country. The sun was actually shining so it was a nice drive. While the syrup really isn't running yet, the farm sets up a pancake house for 2 months. Packed place but didn't have to wait to be seated. All you can eat buckwheat pancakes. I managed 3 and 1/2 and then hit full. Like really hit FULL. My eyes wanted more, but I listened to my stomach and stopped. Yay!
Had my post-op appointment yesterday. Pathology report showed no cancer. Margins clear. Repeat mammogram in 6 months. Not expecting recurrence.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day from the middle of the U.S.,
Carol - sounds like you were on intermittent fasting before it became cool! 😉 Your son's coming surgery was what I avoided by finally getting the medication I needed. Diverticulitis is no joke, and neither is losing part of your colon. It should do wonders for how he feels though. Sorry he's going through it, hope the surgery is quick and successful and recovery is swift and painfree.
Tracey - Sorry your stomach is in an uproar, dear heart. Hope you're feeling better today. On the noise thing, there are some older versions on US Amazon for around $50 USD - Samsung Galaxy earbuds cancel a tremendous amount of noise, while still allowing you to hear what's going on. I forget I have them in after I've talked on the phone all morning, and am always shocked at how loud the TV volume actually is when I pull them out. They hook to your phone, or music from your phone, as well as sharply diminishing the ambient noise levels. Plus, until people look, they don't know they're there!Always hated dealing with the wires of regular earphones.
Heather - The Valentine's cards are lovely. There are so many amazing things about Corey, but he's not the cards & flowers kinda guy. He'll paint a house, but painting a card, not so much. My heart just goes out to your son. Grief like that is so hard, and the temptation to dull the edges must be intense.
Beth - I know they said they didn't think there was any cancer, but it still had to be such a relief to get confirmation! So pleased. Your drive sounds absolutely wonderful. I keep meaning to ask, is your hearing continuing to improve, or did it level out?
Hi, Rebecca in Texas ( @RebeccaMartin2018 ), welcome! We're glad you're here. Make sure to bookmark this thread, it's the small icon at the right side of the top of the page that looks white like this, and turns blue once you select it:[*]

Once you've bookmarked it, you'll be able to find us again. The only thing we don't talk about is politics and religion, making this a safe place as we all try to get healthier - which we know involves how we live, not just losing weight or getting fit. We tend to talk about our whole lives as well as fitness and what we eat.
I was raised in East Texas, and gone back to live in Central, South and West Texas another half dozen times. The only part I didn't live in was the Panhandle! Always pleased to have another Texas girl, welcome, glad you're here!
Didn't get up until nearly 8 a.m. this morning! Fitbit says I'm sleeping between 8 and 9 hours all but one night for the last week. Feels luxurious... I think exercise every day for 10-15 minutes is really helping. I'm sneaking up on myself, inching the time up gently - trying for minimum 12 minutes this month.
Makes me miss our Annie - no pressure girl, if you're reading, just know we miss having you here. Hope you're doing OK.
And thinking of Annie leads on to me thinking of your furry Annie, Barbie. I think of you daily, and the journey none of us want to take for ourselves and so many have before you.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY
Michele - glad you caught that toilet leak in the bathroom. We had the same thing happen in the master bath toilet during Covid, ended up just turning the water completely off as it was leaking all the time. Had to call a plumber who brought a new toilet with him and took care of everything since we weren't able to shop and pick one up. Glad we had another bathroom! Enjoy the warm weather for me.
Flea - I thought about your husband yesterday and I'm glad he didn't try to make it home. I-5 was closed south of me near MP 60 as I recall for around 4 hours in BOTH directions. It was a slip-sliding mess, many accidents and the road in one direction was blocked by a sideways semi. I got about 5" of snow here but it has warmed up a tad. Glad your son was OK with staying home! Many schools are cancelled today in my area. Still getting very light snow here, temps hovering around 31F.
Cindy - I record my "official" weight on Saturday or Sunday morning after coffee, before breakfast and shower. I have to report it to a dietician who is doing a group class for pre-diabetes. But sometimes, during the week, I hop on the scale just because. I'm pretty much at my goal. Have you ever heard of https://www.smartbmicalculator.com/ ? I think it was Terri here who mentioned it several years ago. I think it gives a more realistic picture of our health/weight as we age rather than the standard BMI chart most docs still use.
It's light out and the snow is so white and beautiful. I need to check on the girls and do a quick coop clean.

Been down and out lately. DMD and DS just trying on my nerves. Having a head ache every morning when I get up doesn’t help either. The headache is from my clenching my teeth at night and sinuses from allergy season starting here.
I’ve not been good walking or eating right and I feel it. Just haven’t got over the depression the two 40 year old teenagers are causing me. I get depressed or anxious very easily, always have. Take a couple weeks to a month to get over. I’m just riding it out right now, though I know walking and diet help me get better faster. Just tired of all the drama family brings at times. A big reason I moved here to New Mexico rather than TN or New England where my family is. I’ll get over it, always do, but just have to make it through this down time.
Sorry so negative, just need hugs. DH is being good, I’m glad of that. Still researching either a bigger camper or a house with rent to buy options. Staying here in New Mexico for now.
Thought for today:
What do you call a dog magician?

Unfortunately, he didn't listen to me, and drove home. I was quite upset about it when he called me and said I5 was blocked and he needed help navigating. After multiple unsuccessful attempts at my trying to interpret the traffic reports, I put my youngest on the phone with him, and together, they figured out a route home. It took him about 7 hours, with tales of multiple cars sliding off the road or being stuck.
I didn't say "I told you so", but sometimes he is so stubborn.
But he's home and safe, so I am thankful.
Everything here is shut down again today. It should warm up this afternoon. We have a dinner reservation tonight at a new to us restaurant 30 minutes or so north of us, so we will see
Everyone stay warm!

Did a quick test onwww.thesmartbmicalculator.com/and I am in the optimum range.
I would gain no health benefits, at 75, from losing weight, so it would just be a vanity project.
I always have thought that a little extra flesh looks better as we age.
I still would like to slim down a little though, without going on a 'diet'. It's my waist that is the problem, I can live with the rest of me. Apart from eating grains, mostly wholegrain, my diet is very like Margaret's. I rarely snack between meals and we eat masses of vegetables and fruit. I call it the French diet. I'm hoping that upping my exercise, as my hips strengthen, will help.
I recommended that my friend G visited the tile museum in Funchal today, as the weather has turned a bit. (Madeira is Portuguese, and Portugal is famous for tiles) She said she LOVED it.Just for fun I looked up the hotel we stayed st 21 years ago. It looked exactly the same! I found the same room.with a terrace onto the beautiful sub tropical gardens and a short stroll to the heated seawater pool. Not expensive at all. Nostalgia trip.
Right now, I can smell the Moussaka John is making! It will last us two days, so we could have it again on Sunday, or freeze it.

Beth Yeah for good News!
I try to eat in a window too 7-5. I eat two to three meals and don't snack in-between. Because my blood sugar is now more even I don't get cravings or feel the need to eat between meals. No eating in the evenings for me anymore just water if anything!2 -
Oh heck - I hate it that y'all are getting it, but can y'all please keep winter on the upper West Coast? We're hovering at freezing this morning, a little rain and warmer temperatures tomorrow and Sunday - then it drops to Tuesday predicting snow all day, and then we won't get ABOVE freezing until next weekend. Yuck. You'd think it was February or something! 😉😑😂
Egg is not amused... 🐈⬛👀😑

On my Facebook today.
I did #17 today because I thought some people might be feeling left out. Texted my SIL , L, G, and my son. So glad I did.
L is having a Valentine's feast by herself today next to her partner's photo/shrine. He died a couple of years ago of a sudden aneurysm in front of her. She said 'It's better to have loved and lost .....' etc. Well done her.
All the above is good advice, methinks.

Hello everyone;
I tried to post on Wednesday but gave up after all I typed disappeared. I saw my therapist on Tuesday, and he encouraged me to participate in the 5K. I will see if I can work on Thursday instead of Saturday. I have been working out, and I love it. We even talked about hiring a CPA. I told him that I would ask my friends when we got together. I also talked about my fear of dementia. I talked about what I learned from you all. I aid that I have not been to a gathering lately. So, he encouraged me to get them all together. We set a date for the 25th of this month. I did look into a CPA and read reviews, and one review was discouraging. One lady posted that she was trying to talk to one guy in the firm, and he suggested he was too high up to work with her. She was disappointed because she didn't disclose the amount of money she was dealing with. Needless to say, I crossed that firm off of my list. I went to the weight loss doctor and discovered I was down four more pounds. Yay, this is so encouraging. I have had some headaches again, even now as I am typing this. I took Excedrin for migraine, but I may need to put an ice pack on for the stabbing eye pain. I'm ignoring my stiff knee and sore hip. I did yoga on Monday, and it was so relaxing and pleasing. I love doing step aerobics because it makes me sweat and feel empowered.
Cindy from Florida, I didn't get to welcome you, but I am so happy you are part of our tribe. I have been battling weight all of my life. As a figure skater, I tried to get below 100 pounds, but at 110, I could do effectively sit spins and jumps higher. I'm 5'3', and in high school, my band teacher wanted me to lose weight as a majorette. I weighed 137 then. I would love to be 110 or 137. It ties into my mom bothering me about my weight. She was only happy when I lost weight. I weighed more because I wasn't skating anymore. I had PCOS, so I had huge breasts. I wore a size seven pants and a 2x top. I am in a P cup. So, my mom wanted me to have a reduction. I was under the knife at 21. Then, I was in an abusive relationship. So I ate about it. The next thing I knew, I was over 200 pounds. So I did Weight Watchers, joined Jenny Craig, and lost 75 pounds. Then, I attracted many men, but my boyfriend said, "Wow, I don't have 75 pounds to lose." After ending the relationship, I moved to Chicago and was tempted to return. I didn't like that I was attracting many men, for they made me feel uncomfortable. I like it when I am overlooked. My therapist pointed out that being sexually abused by my uncle at 7 to 11 years of age may be the reason. I continue to feel that way. DH knows that is my trigger. When I met him, he was friendly and not weird.
Lanette, thank you for the information on nutrition for the mind. I took the test, but I think I hit a computer glitch.
Tracey, I am so glad your MIL is home. Does your MIL have AFIB? I would be anxious, too. I know my dad was. Go d vibes sent her way.
Terri, you motivate me to continue learning. I'm still deciding whether to get my MSN and become an FNP.
Lisa, you should write a book. "The Many Lives of Lisa" is a nice title.
Vicki, have you ever considered starting your own business using your skills? Just a thought. I'm glad DH is working again.
Rori, I look forward to your next adventure.
Michelle, have fun in Florida.
Barbara, thank you for the advice on looking into a CPA.
Barbie, I am learning from you. If and when my mom passes, I need to find a funeral home here. I need to have everything organized before I move. I'll be in town monthly for doctor visits and to check on her. I often wonder what I would do with her ashes. Perhaps I will take them to California and spread them at the beach in Santa Monica. I want to be cremated as well, and I found a beautiful ornament to store them in. I don't know if it was Lanette or Carol who has the book, "F#%$ I Am Dead, Now What." I purchased a book like that for my mom, and next, I will work on mine. I have planned funerals before, and my family spent too much money on them.
Rebecca, I hope all is well with you and your boys.
Heather, it sounds like you have a fun place to be.
Allie, I love the pictures of S-Miles and the gang; they are too precious. Poor Delia has to deal with sore gums.
Pip and Machka, keep up the good work.
I will chat again next week. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.

Hello Rebecca from TX from Rebecca from Whidbey Island WA!
I'm 62 yrs old and during this winter I feel every bit of my age. Heat really is a thing when you get older! We don't have a lot of snow here, kind of a micro climate situation here in Puget Sound. So it can be awful on the mainland and just mild here. But summer with heat of temps in the upper 70's lasts maybe a week or two in June/July. Other than that its between 50-60's. I need a tropical island!
I have about 50 lbs to shed as well, but I am waiting for age to kind of do it. I am reasonable healthy for an obese woman, and I am ok with that. I teeter on the fence with trying to be slimmer so I just move better, and living in gastronomy bliss. I am married, so feeding him good food is my goal. For many years when he was on the liver transplant list waiting, food to him tasted weird, so its kind of nice to fix a meal for him and he eats like a starved puppy. He got his semi new liver in 2014 and he will outlive us all.😁
Have a great weekend. Remember "A good day is doing one good thing tied to another, and soon you have real progress"

Carol in Georgia, so sorry to hear of your son's issue and impending surgery. Prayers for a smooth recovery. With my sons Crohn's which have similar markers as diverticulitis, I hope he is handling life ok.
Same here in fixing only a dinner for husband. Breakfast and lunch he's on his own. There are things he's likes to prepare too.

Did Tracy Long’s Defining Lines DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to do an incline interval workout. See, I take my DVD player to the Y and do my workout there since I really can’t do it here early in the a.m. Plus, I see a lot of my friends
Played cards last night. This is the only time I get to play
Pip – you go girl! So proud of you
Cindy – oh, I’m loving this weather. Worst part is my ghost legs. But I’ll be laying out in the sun and so I’ll remedy that….lol Thanks for the friend request. I accepted it
M – glad the surgery went well
Rebecca TX – welcome
Carol – that’s one of the reasons I like going out to eat or eating at other’s homes. I can eat foods that I like. Like you, I usually make things that Vince will eat or if there’s something I don’t want (like tonight he’s having ravioli) I’ll make something for me (like tuna). Prayers for your son
M – I don’t eat fried food and now if I have something that’s deep fried, my stomach says “ahhh...I don’t think so”
Happy valentine’s Day Everyone
After exercise today went to WalMart to get some of the things we needed then to the Dollar store to get a sympathy card for my neighbor whose mother just passed then to Brevard Charities where I got some more DVD’s and some clothing (yes, Barb, there are some that I don’t have...lol). They’ve started this thing where if you make a $5 donation, you get everything for half price. So I bought it. Saved almost $9. This is good indefinitely. The SPCA thrift store and Upscale Retail both do this, too.
Cindy – I don’t record my weight, just weigh myself and look for trends. I like the downward trend...lol

Thanks for asking, yep things are well. My middle sons kids (aged 1 yr, and 5 yrs) have gotten better with their bout of RSV, and youngest had pneumonia as well. Poor kiddos.😥. Then daughter in law got sick, and probably son is next in line. I family that loves together gets sick together.
My eldest is a bit off the grid, just working hard with his squadron in Iwakuni Japan. Not a moment to breathe and connect home here. He will soon enough though. My youngest is still in wait mode in Yokosuka. Been in wait mode since he officially signed off from his ship in November. Its hard on him I can see, but I have been video chatting with him every 2 weeks and he seems upbeat.

Barbie, belated thanks for a new month. You seem to be moving steadily forward in your journey. I realize it’s not all smooth, but you are figuring it out. I think about you often.
Machka, glad to hear hubby’s surgery went well. Hope you can manage to keep him off his leg for the duration!
Heather, the pic of the “three musketeers” was very cute! Thanks for sharing. Your son and dil are a bit young to be experiencing so much loss, but it’s hard at any age. Losing so many in a short period of time tho, that’s just extra “special”.
Rebecca, the pic of Athena was also very cute, she does appear to be feeling better!
Lisa, your quick getaway to the fibre arts show sounds like just the ticket, so happy for you that you can actually plan this kind of stuff again! Also loving the pics of Egg, even when she’s disgruntled, lol. And your bags are gorgeous!
Carla, so sorry for the loss of Jeffery, far, far too young.
I have been reading along so while I’m caught up on all your news I can’t remember a lot that I did want to comment on. Please know that I laugh and cry along with you.
I’m having a tough time getting myself together, weight is creeping up again and I have no motivation to do anything about it. 2024 was a crappy year, our family lost four elders, three of them in eight days (yes, days).
I’m considering canceling my membership at the Y and joining the seniors centre here. They offer a lot of exercise classes. I’ve also bought a rebounder that I hope to use in the evenings or when the weather isn’t cooperating. I did stay home a few weekends ago as well as on the Monday as it snowed and I decided that it was healthier for me to not be on the roads.
That’s enough from me for now. Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the new gals!

Rebecca ~ Love reading about the yummy things you prepare to eat. I too have always leaned toward preparing food that my DH likes. I am trying to change that thinking as there are many things I would like to eat but don't prepare. The best thing is that over the past couple of years, I only prepare one evening meal and let him figure out breakfast and lunch.

Up until very recently, I cooked mainly what dh liked. He has made comments about hating most of what I cook if it is not something he likes BUT, with him not wanting to eat what I cook, claiming he wasn't hungry because he ate at his mom's house or out with friends, I started cooking more of what I like. Why bother cooking food he likes and have him not even eat it. He refuses to eat most left overs. Thankfully son isn't as picky about that as he used to be. Having leftovers for me is great so I don't have to cook every single night, especially on the nights I have class.

I have added something to my mantra Protect your liver, fed your gut, and restore your mitochondria through exercise, eating less, and/or fasting.
Currently reading a book on the importance of healthy mitochondria in terms of energy and cancer prevention.
