Yes, people can be down right nasty, but to be honest, I needed it to realize just how dangerous the life I was leading was.. I was risking my own health and well being and killing myself slowly with food... I defended myself to the core.. one candy won't hurt, one trip to the cheesecake factory won't do that.. etc.. you get my drift.. until the brutality of my best friend, who cornered me in a room and would not let me out.. who brought me to utter tears and tore me to the ground with his words.. and then the scariest thing of all.. my mother had a heart attack.. I rushed to her side and her cardiologist looked at me and said "you my friend are next" I was 38... so mean.. yes.. brutal.. yes.. awful cold truth.. yes.. is it always necessary.. no.. does it sometimes take it to make you wake up and pay attention to what you are doing to yourself.. unfortunately.. when you are a stubborn *kitten* like me.. yes it does... ... That does not give anyone free reign to bash you or humiliate you.. that is not what I am saying... but sometimes.. it does take a harsh person to wake you up. Good Luck in your journey

Well, that's forums for you. This one is a collection of adults with a common goal, so it is waaaaay better than a lot of the other ones out there. ...But the 80/20 rule still applies, 80% awesome, 20% terrible.

I'm also going to make an educated guess and say that most of the active users on here are here because they've tried every other magical sunshine diet and exercise program, and it didn't work. One of the nicest parts of this place is that you can find a large community who have hunkered down and decided to do it "the hard way" with you, and I find seeing other people who have had success with the work very inspirational.

The flip side of that coin is that those same folks don't have patience for fluffy diets and magical thinking - in a lot of cases, they've probably already tried it and know when and how it fails - they're just trying to get you the answer as quickly as possible, and may not take into account that you need a little more handholding. They also see a lot of the same questions every day, and even the most generous person loses patience from time to time. (If you've ever worked a service or help desk job, you know what I'm talking about.)

So, I guess, give it a chance. I lurked for over a year before I started posting, but it improved the experience for me, and is a motivator to keep logging. If it bothers you, narrow your focus to your chosen interests, and let the chaff fall. Good luck!

Once I started just looking at the information for what it was, I learned an awful lot. Some of the folks you are saying are rude are people who, through trial and error, have found success and want to pass that along to the newbies who come around. They don't ask for anything in return, and I've started to understand the frustration they must feel when people argue with their good advice.

I offer comments. I say them as plainly and clearly as possible. If people want to take the advice, they can. If they don't want to take the advice, they don't have to. I'm totally fine either way - I have to live inside my own skin, not anybody else's.

It's not my job to hold someone's reluctant hand, and it's not my job to engage in multi-day running battles trying to convince people. I have been called a "meanie" many times. There are also a number of people who subsequently apologized and asked to be on my FL.

I firmly believe that everybody here has 100% power to change their lives. Some people get very upset when they hear this. But I can't be responsible for that response - people need to own their own reactions.

Perhaps I should have said that I really haven't asked any questions, one or two, barely gotten any response, which is fine, no skin off my nose, as my mom used to say. This is just my observation in general...and from what I've observed, I WON'T be asking any questions.
There is no problem asking questions about a topic you have researched and still need clarification on. In these instances you will find many in this board you classify as mean to be truly helpful.

The problem with this thread is you called out people in general and expected what........ An apology?

Nope, as I said. Just an observation. Free country and all that, which means you're all free to be as mean, insulting and childish as you'd like. We all have opinions, observations, whines, gripes, complaints, stories, advice, insults, blah, blah, blah. How you chose to reply says a lot about you to those observing.

I won't delete this thread, not that I know how, and I won't ask how either! Y'all have fun.

    In...

    ...to catch up later.
    Let me sum up:
    OP: "People are mean!"
    Responses:
    "No, they're not."
    "Yes, they are."
    "No, they're not."
"Yes, they are. In fact, you're mean too."
    "No, I'm not."
    "Yes, you're mean AND ugly."
    "Stop that."
"You're mean and ugly and can't read."
**Insert gifs of varying subject matter**

    Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

    Just a serious note before...cats

Being told "you're doing it wrong' isn't mean. Its actually the most helpful advice you will ever receive. I get it. It took me a while to swallow some pride and listen to people too. But the sooner you listen to the 'mean people' with lasting success, the sooner you will be on your way to the healthy, fit life you want. If I was doing something dangerously wrong at work, I would not want someone to blindly agree with me. I would want them to say "Hey STAHP, you are going to light yourself on fire!"

That's because some people are thoughtless self absorbed BELL ENDS! But fear not we aren't all like that, I don't attest to know everything there is to know about this whole crazy weight loss game, but feel free to add me and I'll help where and when I can...

Examples? I can't remember an OP just being blatantly called an idiot without dishing out some pretty hefty insults first

    I'll wait.

Complains about insulting people by insulting people. These threads always go exactly the same way.

    Agreed.

Certain people on MFP who have already lost the weight they were looking to lose think they are entitled and overall better than everyone else because they have already accomplished their goals.

I find them to be very narrow-minded. They think they have the right answer to everything. They think other individuals who are still in the process of losing weight's opinion is less valuable and accurate.

Most importantly they think what worked for them, will work for everyone else. Yes, there's only one way to lose weight: a calorie deficit. But everyone gets their calorie deficit different ways.

This sounds an awful lot like you last night in the Ketones thread. Pot, kettle?
