Negative NET calories that is--but I was perhaps wrongly assuming that would be understood from what I said.

    It's not negative anything calories.

You're getting smoked in every thread you participate in - it's time to get some better sources of information than "Yahoo Answers".

    Seriously.

... And for me, too much is just looking at cake....

I know exactly what you mean. I asked my husband to change soy milk brands because his had a picture of two cookies on the front. Two Peak Freans with raspberry jelly in the middle. I had to fight cravings every time I opened the fridge.

    ....

    ...........

.................Well That's enough internet for me today. I hear a cookies and cream quest bar calling my name anyway.
    tumblr_inline_mn8coi6ajW1qz4rgp.gif

By the way, how are those? I've been meaning to try them.

I like them but the husband finds them too sweet so, if you don't like to lick sugar cubes like I do, it may be a bit in the sweet side for you.

    Fruit sugar is fructose.

Bull****. Most fruits have significant quantities of glucose and sucrose, and some even have more glucose than fructose.

Why post something that is so readily disprovable?

"All foods have some calories. No food is actually "negative calorie" food. BUT the overall effect of certain foods in our body is that of "negative calories". Negative calorie foods are foods, which use more calories to digest than the calories the foods actually contain!

Calories from these foods are much harder for the body to breakdown and process. In other words, the body has to work harder in order to extract calories from these foods. This gives these foods a tremendous natural fat-burning advantage.

A piece of dessert consisting of 400 calories may require only 150 calories to be digested by our body, resulting in a net gain of 250 calories which is added to our body fat! According to this theory, for example, if you eat 100 calories of a food that requires 150 calories to digest, then you've burnt an additional 50 calories simply by eating that food."

you are talking about the thematic effect of food...which, in most studies, has been shown to be negligible and not increase metabolism by that much ..

    Nice try though...

maybe you will have better luck on Wikipedia..?

thermatic--->studies---->negligible it is on my wall; I am too tired to pull it over here....sugar crash, and I ate a grapefruit.......uh oh.....zealot sounding; Church of the Holy MFP, Father McDonald presiding...run....run...run....

Maybe another poster commented this already but vegetables and fruits are high in carbohydrates, so I feel the article title misses the mark. I think they intend to mean refined carbohydrates, that is to say white flour and sugar.
Anyway, I know someone, and really admire, who does not consume flour or sugar or alcohol or nicotine or caffeine at all, and works out at a gym regularly, as well as at a karate dojo. I don't know if I am capable of maintaining all of those habits. But I think it is really nice to know that it can be done, even in this US of A, by a functioning, healthy, gainfully employed, family man. It can be done.

Sigh. Thank you, Mister Science. I was generalizing and my point was simply that different sugars are handled differently.

Sucrose breaks down into fructose and glucose both.

Glucose triggers the insulin reaction and "sugar crash." Fructose is handled by the liver (no insulin spike).

Why get so belligerent with a total stranger? You kiss your mother with that mouth?

    more sugar fear mongering...

I offer this as a counter, which explains why insulin has gotten a bad rap...

    http://weightology.net/weightologyweekly/?page_id=319

Also, sugar compromises your immune system? Come on man...so if I eat a piece of cake, I am more likely got get sick over the next 24 hours?
Actually sugar does effect our immune system. The metabolic pathway into cell structure for vitamin C is also used for glucose and too much glucose shunts vitamin C uptake compromising the immune systems effectiveness.

^^^THIS^^^ Ever wonder why everyone gets sick at the holidays after gorging on sweet treats? High blood glucose is an enemy to us in a great many ways--and the FASTEST way to raise it to an unacceptably high level is to eat a lot of sugar and sit or lay around. When you do that, you force your body to react to the danger (of possible diabetic coma) by sending a surge of insulin to "grab" that high blood glucose, convert it into triglycerides and stuff it into your fat cells. I suppose getting fat is preferable to going into a coma, but, in the long run, obesity itself will shorten your life and reduce the quality of your life for many years in advance of death. It is possible to get along quite well without added sugar. I do not eat added sugar as a general rule and have not for over three years. I also do not eat wheat or much grain (only the occasional piece of organic sourdough rye bread or some sesame rice chips). My health has improved markedly. I eat more vegetables than I have ever eaten before in my life and if I am wanting something sweet, I eat a piece of fruit. On the rare occasion when I do eat some kind of sweet (birthday cake or some such) I find it unacceptably sweet and leave most of it. Most older people are simply not active enough to justify the level of carbohydrate in the standard diet so I adjust my carbohydrate intake up and down based on activity level. I generally aim for 70-120 grams of carbohydrate per day with the higher amount for very active days. It really isn't rocket science. After many years of yo-yo dieting, I have found what works for me. Will it work for everyone? Probably not (except the restriction on added sugar--that is advisable for most people who care about their long-term health). Athletes of course, and men in general (because of their higher proportion of lean body mass) would need a lot more carbohydrates to "spare" their muscles. Again, not rocket science.

that is a pretty broad generalization. People get sick after the holidays because it happens to be cold and flu season...additionally, I typically do not get sick after the holiday season, so what does that mean?

and sugar does not automatically get stored as fat; excess calories get stored as fat....

Yes--it is a generalization but one that reflects reality for a great many people. I did NOT say that sugar gets automatically stored as fat. Read it again.

you said sugar gets stuffed into fat cells...and then proceeded to fear monger about "diabetic coma" and the like...

I will say it again ..sugar is not going to make you get ill..you get ill from well, diseases...

Do you have some kind of study or statistic on post holiday sugar consumption leading to people being sick?

I'd like to see one if it exists. I'd also like to see it explain why Australia's cold and flu season is May to October and not anywhere near Christmas and all of the holiday sweets and treats.

Could it be that cold and flu season is related to the winter season and not the holidays or any influx of sweets and treats?

Are real medical researchers enough for you? With real M.D. degrees and Ph.D.s?

    http://www.foodaddictionsummit.org/presenters-johnson.htm

    You are welcome.

Food addiction summit. I'm sure there is no bias there

These are REAL medical researchers who are well regarded in their fields. Dr. Johnson is Chief of the Renal Division at the medical center at the University of Colorado. He has been given an NIH grant to study the epidemic of renal disease and failure in sugar cane workers in Central America. What he and his team expect to find is that their habit of drinking sugar-sweetened fruit juice and soda while working in the very hot cane fields precipitates needle-like crystals of uric acid in their renal tissue. The consumption of fructose causes a rise in uric acid levels. Sucrose is 50% fructose and 50% glucose and the consumption of it represents the greatest exposure to fructose for most people (other than those who are consuming high fructose corn syrup).

yawn…and for everyone of those there are ten others that say sugar consumption in moderation is not addictive or harmful to health….these people obviously have an agenda and there would be no "sugar is fine" presenters, I am sure...

I don't want to live a life where a slice of lemon sponge cake is considered a binge.
    giphy.gif

It is still a free country, last time I checked.

WTH does Canada (which is a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy not a "free" country) have to do with me not wanting to live a life where a slice lemon sponge cake is considered a binge? Your life is not mine. You want live without eating lemon sponge cake or any other foods on your Big List O' Naughty and Deadly Foodz, you do that, but don't try throwing me under your Sugar Iz Ebil bandwagon, or whatever it's called.

It is a manner of speaking meaning, " *shrug* It's your life--do with it what you will." Why the anger? Are you afraid that I am going to send the "Sugar Police" after you? And why bring Canada into the discussion? Honestly, sometimes I think that eating sugar must wreck brain cells or something.

Not at all true. The body is quite capable of doing without the consumption of added sugar as is the brain. The brain can operate on ketone bodies. We have LOTS of fail safes--otherwise, the human race would likely have become extinct a long time ago.

If I have a day of too heavy carbs, I feel awful. Worse, I wake up the next day and feel like I have a hangover! People around me often hear me say that I need some protein. I've always been this way.
