I'm new to MFP, my exercise is a 40 min round trip on my Townie to the dog park with my 3 yr old in a trailer and my Aussie by my side.

I would like to branch out to some easy trails around Santa Cruz in the next week. I think I want to have my bike serviced before I do that though.

Any tips on wheels? I think mine are considered hybrid and I'm a little worried about how they will respond to non-paved roads.

    bump to save the page.

Have not made the best start to my tally this month (only 208.6km so far), but will aim to get a couple of longer rides in.

Target of 500km by the end of March.

    Blanphere, crashed twice?? Be careful.

A crash for me is more like falling over in slow-motion trying to get used to clip-ins! Just a little road rash on my palm and nice puffy bruise on my wrist. I'm not very coordinated. Oddly enough - I"m much less likely to injure myself on a bike than I am walking!

I am still completely smitten with spinning class. I might be the only one on the thread that likes using a trainer / spin bike and riding inside. I don't have a road bike - I have my boyfriend's cast off mountain bike that I don't think fits me all that well. I really don't have a huge desire to do organized rides or really long rides. I enjoy riding outside for fitness and enjoying nature with friends and family.

That being said, what kind of bike do I really need? I'm new to all of this, and all my friends that ride are trying to get me into the latest carbon high tech road bikes. But I don't think that's what I really want. I want versatility, a light weight frame, I don't think I want fixed - I like to coast downhill. I know I don't want another cruiser / hybrid comfort bike - too heavy.

    Any suggestions??

Blanphere, I'd say you should get a road bike. You aren't that interested in a hi tech carbon fiber $$ at this time, so why don't you check used first. You have a good selection available in mid & smaller sizes, low miles, & only a few yrs old. Many bike shops will make free adjustments on their used bikes, but other sources are out there.

    3-1 15 miles
    3-2 15
    3-8 15
    3-9 16
    3-10 16

Okay, I just read this and I absolutely love this idea! I began riding my bicycle again only this month and haven't really kept track of miles but I will from now on and post them!

I would ride more if I had a decent bicycle but for now my janky old Craigslist special Schwinn will have to do...

    3/9/2014 10 miles
    3/11/2014 15 miles

    I'm in!

I love cycling! I rode a road bike for years, but now I'm strictly mountain biking, and I'm still not very good at it. I have gone a few times this year, weather permitting. Today I took off work, and my son and I went out. 11.5 miles, 99 minutes total ride time. Our local trail is very technical, so I'm actually quite pleased with this time. At 45, I'm not nearly as brave as my son, whose 15, so I was very proud of myself for doing all the dangerous sections today!

Yeah - I set it up primarily for the challenges in the Century Cycling Group - we've got some interesting ones going on in there at the moment, including one themed on the Professional "Spring Classics" races, and then another bunch over the summer that cover the 3 Grand Tours - which are usually team-based challenges.

There's some pretty keen riders in there - I don't seem to trouble the leaderboard much, and I generally do around 12,000km a year...

I got home yesterday and realised EVERY spoke on my back wheel was seriously loose. Not going to ride it now until I get it sorted at Giant ASAP. Might consider riding my mountain bike the 12 miles each way to work, but that sounds like some hard riding compared to my nice thin slicks on road bike!

    3/10 - 11.1 miles, 32 min
    3/12 - 20.5 miles, 63 min

    MTD - 154

Given that I'm almost to my goal for the month, I think I'll push that up a little. Warmer days are bringing back some additional energy. Seems that with the warming weather, there are lots of other getting out as well. Great to have the additional interactions on my ride as it makes it a little more interesting.

Some great efforts in the thread. Everyone keep it up. We've almost got this month down!

Oh - just in case anyones thinking of joining the GS MyFitnessPal Club on Strava... Have a quick read of the club page first - it's by request only, and unless I get a PM on here stating who you are on Strava for cross-reference, it's unikely I'll open the doors :-) We had a whole bunch of "pot hunters" who just joined every group and tried to kill off the leaderboards, so I basically killed everyone in the team who I didn't recognise from prior stuff, then made access by request only, so that only people on MFP got to join.

I know it's a pain, but... well - frankly I'd enough on my hands managing the cycling challenges I do, without trying to sort out who everyone is.

    Cheers Folks

That's me in, Thank you. Although I do a fair mileage I certainly wont be challenging for any prizes.
