    I assume that anyone in the medical profession is charging enough money to take into account their level of education, degree of specialisation and their time. If they're not then the problem lies with the clinic or hospital management.

    Yes this happens in many eastern european countries, medical doctors dont get paid very well at all there, and tips are expected many times BEFORE a surgery (very surprised when I learned this too)...but dentists...I hadn't heard they relied on tips so much, in the countries I heard about this practice dentists are actually more well paid than the other medical professions.

    No Comet, in the US and western european countries tipping your medical professionals is unheard of.

    I've decided on a new career path... Romanian Dentist...

    I don't know how to say this without sounding rude, however, I am sincere when I ask this... Would it be cheaper or feasible to go to a dentist in a nearby country that doesn't require bribing your medical professionals?

    if you factor in the cost of transportation, no.. its cheaper here

    In that case, I would tip whatever you feel comfortable with above the base cost, but below the cost with transportation factored in. If they are insulted, I would plan on taking holiday once per year to have any major medical work performed.

    I do not usually tip over 10% for standard service. If a person would like a good tip, said person must provide good service. If they have issues with the tip, I explain what they did and how they can improve if needed.

    P.S. I have liked every Romanian that I have met because they have been direct and honest. Much respect to your country. :smile:

    If tips are expected prior to service, I would require a fixed fee for services. I would then tip 10% up front and explain that additional tip depends on how well services are performed.

    why not? the dental clinic I go to is at one of the best hospitals in the whole country. Why would they pay their dentists so little that they have to ask patients for tips? If that was going on I'd find a more professional hospital and ask my medical insurance company why they're recommending this dental clinic (my insurance doesn't cover dental, but the hospital that the insurance recommends has a dental clinic).

    ^^ Yup, and your assumption is pretty wrong on the pay side too, its insurance companies that are paid well for certain, the rest is fought for and up for grabs...and more and more now than it ever used to be. In Bulgaria, you'd better have tipped your MD before your procedure, or he might get "sloppy"...seen the poor results before, and it was even a mis connection in this case that caused the "tip" to not be paid before surgery...sloppy closure after surgery seemed to be almost akin to the stereotypical ill mannered chef spitting in your food because you don't tip well...

    I was talking about myself. I don't live in Bulgaria. I live in Bahrain. In Bahrain you tip the guy from the supermarket who carries your shopping to your car. You don't tip dentists. So why should I assume I'm not going to be optimal care if I don't tip my dentist?

    We have dentist healthcare here, we pay enough every freaking month, don't gonna tip them.

    They make enough money as it is already

    I hope you don't live in the U.S...

    I'm really amazed at how many people don't tip..

    Well, if you ever need one, do the right thing and tip 15-25%. (I usually do 25%.)

    maybe for a lot of people the cost is very high and they can't afford a tip on top of that. In most countries, medical professionals charge an amount that covers all of their expertise and time. It's not like a pizza that costs a few dollars and you tip the delivery guy an extra dollar or two....

    if you live in a country where medical costs are high and you can afford to pay the bill and tip them an amount that's not going to be offensive, then I'm very happy for you. But most people can't afford to do that and the amount the professionals are paid shouldn't leave them wanting tips.

    Times when I want to show my appreciation for medical staff, I'll send them flowers and a card or some similar kind of gifts. Something personal rather than cash.
