    Actually, if you have read the Book by ellis or have seen Bale's performance as the character and then reference this thread and this thread alone you can see the mirroring of Bateman. If your offense comes from the murdering aspect then you should not be offended because he didn't actually murder anyone. Well, maybe the homeless guy. It is more about how he uses fashion and flash, and flair to move up in society. Title and power were all that mattered to him and in his craze to become more powerful he started to lose himself into fantastical fantasies where he actually believed he were murdering these people. The way I see it is he tried so hard to live this fantasy and become what he imagined that the line blurred between reality and fantasy. Keep in mind that I have no formal education and I am by no means an expert on literature, symbolism, or phsychology. That is simply what I take away from the story.

    Anyway, I lost my train of thought. Your reference to the material things and success and how hand in hand they are and that one feeds the other reflects the very same morality and mentality of Batemen. I actually had the same comparison running in my head before she said anything.

    and yeah I am offended about the murdering aspect - that is a repulsive comparison. If I was being compared to Victor Ward - then sure it could be an insult in some ways but applicable in others - but Batemen and me have about nothing in common.

    Sorry, I was tangenting about the Movie. In the interviews with Ellis he says they were murdered but in the movie version it was all in his head. Either way, you lose the point of the reference when you wrap yourself up in the murder aspect of it. Looking past the murderous habit the similarities are still very abundant. The depth that your materialism goes in this thread and your importance that you place on status, brands, and persona are all very Bateman like.
    I 100% agree I am too materialistic, I basically conditioned myself to be materialistic because I was an addict that with a nihilistic worldview. With there being no point at all to existence, I abused substances because it felt - well you could feel something period which was nice at the time. - of course my life spiraled embarrassingly out of control, had to drop out of college and move back in with my parents even to get my head back on straight and to grow up. - humbling to admit. I was depression personified, and with no point at all to life I figured I might as well work to kill time and get nice things? - so I ditched 99% of the druggie idiot friends I used to have and surrounded myself around ppl that I had viewed as successful and tried to become just like them - and in many ways I achieved that... but I achieved it without developing still a real purpose per se... because when viewing the cosmos as a whole or even realizing we are in a parallel universe with really no purpose.. it is all a bit meaningless - even the clothes and wealth.. idk I feel happier WAYY happier being sober and a health nut - but I still in a sense feel as if I am just. killing. time.

    ..as for substance I will totally admit I have been feeling like I lack... purpose? idk how to structure how I feel about it.. but I am aware I am not exactly developed in the ideal manner in regards to substance...

    and that is humbling to admit!

    Admitting you have a problem is the first step? Do you think you may have exchanged one addiction for the other?

    Retail therapy..it's not just a river in Egypt.

    I mean idk if I have a problem with shopping? Its not like I have anydebt.. zero - not even school loans... if that is what you mean..

    Honestly, the problem is not that you buy nice things... or even that you like nice things...

    The problem is that you let nice things define you. You need to define yourself. You need to let the quality of your character, your knowledge, skills, talents, and abilities define you.

    Can I recommend an NA meeting (since you are recovering from subtance abuse)? Addiction isn't really about the drugs that we do but our attitude towards ourselves and others. If you really don't want to revisit the substance abuse, there is also a group called Celebrate Recovery that covers these principles without singling out a specific vice in one's life.

    it's not about whether you can afford stuff, it;s about the fact that buying stuff won't make you happy. Counselling might help, to get to the root of the issues that caused you to abuse drugs in the past, and that's causing you to seek happiness in things. Happiness comes from within. Outside things only distract you from being miserable. If you're not happy inside, then you need to deal with the issues that are stopping you from being happy.

    ^ i used to attend those during my first two years of sobriety - I have about 4 years+ under my belt I did AA, NA, and even went to Celebrate Recovery - it's good but they focus on ppl that are still struggling with using... I struggle with saying no to eating a piece of white bread and making my six pack not look as attractive - there isn't a chance in the world I'm ever using again - using was me putting a bandaid on a bigger problem and that is I felt that there is no real purpose for our existence. In the grand scheme of things at the lvl of the cosmos we are insignificant as a hair on a gnats rear -

    now your input on not letting my things define me. - that is good I will admit I am totally doing that. I will continue working on enhancing your recommendations - its a slow process tho .

    I am sorry, read this whole thread and for some reason this kept popping out at me.

    If a 'spornosexual' takes his cues from porn.............hold on, this is a marketing term, therefore it should have been acknowledged that the straight porn industry mostly deals with average to below average males. The purpose for this is to give the viewer a sense that these men are not better and that even a below average (looks) guy can screw a good looking, woman. I do have the marketing knowledge for this, I do web design, social media marketing, development and SEO (I am not a content writer, so bash my grammar it's fine). One of my clients is a legend in the gay porn industry, when working on his projects, I had to ask " why the gay porn stars were so much better looking than the straight?" . He informed me that the good looking guys could cause the men watching straight porn to feel self conscious and needed to feel they had a chance at these girls. He also told me often good looking men trying to get into porn, get rejected and many gay porn stars are in real life straight. I did more research and spoke with people at the studios and casting directors (had to anyways because of the projects), they all confirmed this. So if these "spornosexual" guys are taking cues from porn, they are aiming for below average and I do not see how any man should step up his game to aspire to this.

    *not saying a average guy can not have a beautiful SO, purely as marketing this strategy is used.

    Then yeah, I guess no problem. You'd know if it were a problem, like if you were bringing home more bags than you can carry and needed to get help to your car a lot of times, if you were on a return things kick which was really actually just an excuse to go back and buy MOAR THINGS, if you had a closet full of things to wear and then also a bunch of stuff with labels still on them and no real place to actually ever wear them. Stuff like that.

This thread is regarding 3 sterotypes of men, the average guy, the guy that cares about his wardrobe and personal appearance, and the guy that cares more about his body and personal appearance. There is now simply an observation that the spornosexual is different from a metrosexual, and there is a significant difference.

    Not belittling - but if this is seriously news to people then there is seriously a huge age gap in understanding, a lack of a college education, or you live in a very rural area - not saying any of that is wrong but I'd venture to say that is accurate.

    If you are to represent sophistication and higher education...

    LMFAO what does that have to do with anything??
