Do you say Pop or Soda?
    Hoagies or Subs?
    Lightening bugs or fireflies?

I'm from Ohio but now in PA and I say Pop, subs, and lightening bugs.

Tell me what you say and where you are from and add in new words too!

Iowa here. We say the same.

And in the South we call it not a Coke, not a Coca-Cola, but a Coke Cola.

I've used Lightning Bug and Firefly interchangeably.*

*Note: I'm now in the Pacific Northwest and don't use either term because we don't seem to have these bugs here. It makes me sad. Did you know their eggs glow?

    Northeast Delaware/Philadelphia metro area....

All the signs on the sandwich shops say "Subs" but a lot of people around here call them Hoagies too. And when a sign on a shop says "Steaks", they aren't talking about New York Strip.....they're talking about thin sliced beef in a sandwich.

    Soda....NEVER "pop"

I've heard people call them both fireflies and lightning bugs around here.

we also call winter knit hats "toques" i think you americans call them "beanies"?

we call the meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but i was born on the other side of the country where the meals were breakfast , dinner, and supper.

where i was born we called backpacks bookbags, and pencil crayons "Leds". i have no idea why.

Growing up in Brooklyn it was soda, heroes and lightning bugs, moved to NJ and it was soda, subs and fireflies. Live in Upstate NY now, still soda and subs but I haven't seen a lightening bug/firefly so I don't know what they call 'em up here.

I lived in Oregon most of my life but now live in Utah. I have always said Soda and Subs and I have never seen a lightening bug or firefly. Or even a cockroach. I've always said davenport, not sofa or couch. Utahans speak rather strangely and have terrible grammar so I have tried not to pick up any bad habits. But occasionally I speak in the vernacular to my embarrassment.

I'm in Missouri and most people in my area call it "pop" but I have always said soda, as do my family & most friends. It's never hoagie, always sub (older folks usually lengthen it to "sub sandwich"), and lightning bug.

I was probably 25 before I knew lightning bug = firefly. ha! I thought fireflies were dragonflies or something.

Lightening for lightning is one of my pet peeves. I drive past a business sometimes called "Lightening Lube" and wonder if they are in there doing foils of blonde highlights on the side ;-)

A lot of older people in my area pronounce washer like "warsher". The Conoco gas station we say "CON-uh-ko" and I know some people from the Northeast who say it a bit like "Koh-NO-ko", it sounds like a Japanese restaurant that way (to my ears).
