I really loved the period where she was trying to land the role of Evita. She put out some good music over about two years. I don't know what she sounds like live, though. And there are still a couple things from the very early years I like. I get tired, though, of the need to shock. It stinks of a lack of talent, even if there is actual talent.If your three-year-old can convince 100 million people to buy her work, then she's a great artist.
I kind of feel the same way about Madonna.
The difference is between madonna and a three year old, though, is that in thirty years the three year old will have matured a little.
Madonna certainly has her finger on the pulse of something or other. There are few other popular musicians with her staying power, especially women.

How, precisely, do you measure "good erotica"? Whether is sold? Whether it got good reviews? Bad reviews? She's sold MILLIONS of copies and is now making it into a movie. A good major have loved the books. She also doesn't go around bashing other people's writings..........

My definition of "good" is that people can read it without flinching in pain. Her story is completely ripped off from Twilight, at least mine is original. My heroine is not a college graduate who has never used a computer and uses British slang terms even though she's American. And while I do dabble in BDSM, I don't create a hero who stalks the heroine and makes her sign a contract to endure pain. FSOG only sold well because it was fan fic. Not because it was good.
And there were plenty of people who were able to read it without flinching in pain. Her story is based on Twilight, but at least the storyline was changed enough that it's not an actual rip-off. Everything is influenced by something, and very rarely is anything ever an 'original'. It's simply a re-telling of what's already been told.
It wasn't marketed as fan-fic, so I doubt that's why it sold so many copies. It's because it's mommy porn, and not surprisingly, a lot of women had no idea that this kind of writing existed outside of Fabio-covered books. So grammatically, who cares as long as it's getting someone's knickers wet? That's the whole POINT of erotica, right?
I read it, and I didn't enjoy it. I'm not arguing that a book may not have been to someone's liking. But your hatred of something that sold so well, simply because you consider it 'bad' writing is incredibly petty. And to then flout "I'm a better writer" is seen only as something akin to a nasty jealousy rager.0 -

Just for me personally, sex and sexuality is an extremely important aspect to my happiness, and I need it frequently. I also need to always have some novelty and excitement. As time goes on, that means bringing more and new things into it. At this point conventional sex just won't do it for me.

This reminds me of an awesome The Onion (that I can't find) that detailed the demise of a couple's sex life after kids. overall I think it's important to really really remember it's a work of fiction. i just feel that's the key point. fiction is meant to be entertainment and thusly does not need to adhere to rules for any practices nor be seen as "promoting" anything.
It might be said to be *portraying* something, but that's it. That's as far as we can go really.
there is plenty of fiction that dabbles in uncomfortable subject matter like patterson writes stuff like that heck they all do. but we don't take any of that too seriously, I guess I have to wonder why people want to take THIS particular piece of fiction so seriously?
anyways that's why i thought that gif was appropriate b/c it had someone getting all perturbed at the computer and then some light hearted entertainment to break up the seriousness. It might be a book and that might be more culturally palatable to some than TV or movies and thus WANT it to be held to some higher standard, but it's still just fiction. A genre with very few rules and very little to answer to.0 -

Well I didn't read the whole thread, just the opening post. I really hope this guy is joking. 50 shades is not about women's issues. It does not portray lifestyle D/s at all with any accuracy either. It seemed to me that is was pure fantasy with not much grounded in the realities of what it is like to be in a D/s relationship. Disclaimer: I read only snippets and will not be seeing the movie.0
