Haven't read it. Will probably end up seeing it when it comes out on Video with my wife and/or daughter. Will be uncomfortabele just like Magic Mike was.

As far as realism -- from the little I have heard of it, it's not real at all.

And as far as women who get all worked up over the concept, in real life, they are not ready for submission. They think so, but, when confronted with it, they shy away or want to set boundaries that they can't even begin to approach.

I love it when they can, but it is rare.

As the child of someone that read these books, I would not even entertain the thought of seeing this movie with my mother. A sex scene comes on Game of Thrones and she spends the entire thing clearing her throat loudly making a show of her discomfort. Nope nope nope.

Absolutely appalling series of books. Incredibly wrong portrayal of the BDSM community. Going to copy/paste a very important article I read just barely identifying the issues with this book:
Wanna know the BDSM mantra? Safe, sane, consensual.

So let me explain why this book was devoid of all three of these things.

Safe - In the first few chapters of the novel, Christian Grey tracks Ana’s cell phone to find her at a club. Takes her home when she’s drunk, changes her when she’s so intoxicated she doesn’t remember him doing so,and informs her he will be keeping tabs on her for her own benefit. This is not the behaviour of a respectable Dominant. This is the behaviour of a power hungry, abusive *kitten* who really can’t take no for an answer.

Sane - One of the most important parts of BDSM is aftercare. Scenes can be extremely traumatizing and intense for the submissive. Aftercare is anything from petting to cuddling to holding to sweet talking, whatever degree of gentleness a bottom would need to pull them out of “subspace”. How does Christian provide aftercare? He submits Ana to a traumatizing first time spanking experience AND THEN ****ING LEAVES. AND GETS MAD THAT SHE DIDN’T TELL HIM SHE WAS UPSET. He’s the one who should ****ing know better! That, again, is not the act of a responsible Dominant. It’s the act of a selfish abuser.

Consensual - Did I mention he undressed her when she was belligerently drunk? Tracked her phone to locate her? He also buys her a new car despite her saying no countless times. Now, consent is important for any kind of sexual activity at all. Consent means informed, consent means enthusiastic. Informed, enthusiastic consent. This is crucial in a BDSM setting. Scenes can be extremely intense, especially for the bottom. What is Christian’s form of obtaining consent? Handing Ana a ****ing contract highlighting all the things he wants to do her *kitten* and asking her to sign it. She was a virgin (Don’t even get me ****ing started.) who had never before been exposed to BDSM. Entering in that kind of relationship takes a gargantuan amount of trust and knowledge so you know exactly what you’re getting into. Not reading a list of kinks on a piece of paper and signing your rights to say no away. Christian didn’t offer her resources, he didn’t offer her information. He gave her an ultimatum.
****. This. book. It’s written in a ****ty way, it’s a terrible example of a BDSM relationship (ask anybody already involved in the lifestyle and watch them go blue in the face just thinking about it), which is already faced with enough prejudice and misunderstand, and it romanticizes and glorifies abuse.

I understand that you may like the book itself, but there are definitely much better!!

will find later- love reading good erotica.
I like watching bad porn too- but reading good stuff- is fun. :D

Seriously- I think we were talking about this when the trailer first came out.

The problem is not that we are close minded- it's that we are actually open and aware of what real BDSM culture is like. I'm pretty vanilla for them- but I'm at least AWARE.

    The book/movie are as follows
    A.) vanilla
B.) written for bored house wives who don't know what porn or BDSM are- and are scared of it
C.) Does not accurately represent the safety/trust/consensual acts that happen between two people who enter into a dom/sub relationship.
    D.) sh*tty insipid writting

these are not pick one- it's ALL of those things.

They were written for entertainment purposes. Just like any other books, you either enjoyed them or you didn't. Is it an accurate depiction of the BDSM lifestyle? Not really. I would not take it as far as far as to say the books advocate abuse, however. Just my humble opinion.

I'm sorry, but I found the books horribly written and stupid, as well as promoting an abusive relationship.

I have no intention of seeing the film.
I will see the film just to see it. There never should have been a sequel, though, because she finally got free from the abuse toward the end, and then quite moronically goes back to the guy in the second book. Which I haven't read, because that's something I just can't stomach; that it was published regardless of the abusive aspects of book 1.
Ah, yes. S&M for people who don't know anything about S&M.

The fact that it is a competent and comprehensive introductory guide to alternative lifestyles is only one small part of the value of the set.

If Fifty Shades of Grey is your idea of competent, I sincerely weep for you. And my inner goddess is laughing.
Mine wanted to strangle something and not the good way. It was all right the first few times, but then it became a cringe-worthy joke. I can't believe people think it's fine writing, I almost cried throughout. As for the author, she's basically a housewife with a dirty mind, who hasn't set foot in a dungeon but learned everything on wikipedia. I've read good BDSM books and this is 50 Shades of Shudder. Not the good way.
I've heard a lot of ignorance regarding the books and now the coming movie, but this thread takes the cake. Holy crap, does it ever take the cake.

I KNOW! I can't believe half of the things people are writing here. I doubt half of them even ever read the series. Just a bunch of armchair critics for the new york times armchair review, writing armchair reviews for armchairs they haven't even sat in.

Sorry, but I did read the books. Painfully. Suffered through every page.
I totally agree. See inner goddess above.

It is the greatest love story of our time! It's a lesson in character development and growth. It's a masterful work of beautiful words strung together by a woman who probably walks on water and flies on angel wings, she's so perfect in her writing.

Every college-level English lit class should teach these books. ALL OF THEM.
