Apparently in the mid-west they have problems with French pronunciations of French words. Particularly in the names of their cities and towns.

I'm looking at you Versailles, Indiana (Ver-sales)

Rule 1: The French are always wrong

Rule 2: If the French are right, see Rule 1.

I hate it when people say foyer like foy er instead of foy ay. Its a french word... silly me
I wouldn't pronounce with an ay in the end, if I spoke French. Americans have a weird way of pronouncing French.

Faux is one vowel in sound yet it becomes two in some miraculous way over there.

And don't get me started on hors d'oeuvres, that one makes my ears bleed.

I think correct pronunciation is all a matter of opinion. In my opinion many americans from all states pronounce a great many words wrong.

Mine isn't really a local word that's said incorrectly, but loose and lose drive me nuts seeing it in the written word. I seriously did see a sign that said "want to loose weight call me!" And I was laughing to myself "Oh no, the weights have been loosed!"

I am from Hull, Yorkshire, England, but in Hull, our accent/dialect, we don't pronounce the letter 'H' so people from here say ULL' even our football (soccer) and Rugby teams promote merchandise branded 'ULL' I don't find it ignorant personally, I understand some gripes with pronunciations of certain places, like completely changing the spelling.

I live in Iowa... and we have several towns with issues

    Nevada - pronounced ne-VAY-duh

We have one of those in Missouri too! Same awful pronunciation. Also in Oklahoma there's a Miami with the pronunciation of "My-AM-uh" which many insist is correct Native American pronunciation.

I'm curious... How do you pronounce it correctly? I need some phonetics here.

    kike in doll

So I looked up the pronunciation and this is what my search returned...

    kerr ken doll
Kuy - sounds like 'Ker' (rhymes with "her")
kendahl = ken doll, like Barbie's Boyfriend

So" kike in doll" may not be correct... :-) Heck what do I know, I never saw or heard the name/word until now! LOL!

There's a whole slew of Wisconsin cities that no one can pronounce. Look up the YouTube video of Texans pronouncing Wisconsin cities and you'll see what I mean.

There are two in Wisconsin that drive me up a wall. Inability to pronounce the "th" in that / there / those / etc. "Dat der truck." Those aren't words! The other one is inserting "r's" where the don't belong. Especially when "wash" becomes "worsh."
