    Wow...

    I'm so glad that this is the type of community where someone can come on here, have a bad day, rant about it and feel free to do so without everyone giving them a hard time and making them to feel like crap!(purposeful sarcasm) Lawdy, I hope none of you people have a bad day and come in here ranting about something, and if you do, I hope you're not treated the way you're treating this woman.

    I don't let the behaviors of others affect my choices so therefore, no, I won't be coming on here to rant because I can't have 40 calories in Snickers. I'd just eat it! Also, the ranter must realize that she has no control over the behavior of others. Only of herself. This isn't about giving someone a hard time. It's about teaching someone how to take accountability. It's not her fault that her coworkers brought in candy. That doesn't justify her eating it nor does it justify her getting angry about it. Anger is counter-productive.
    To the OP...I'm sure it's rough having treats in your face every time you turn around when you're trying so hard to stay away from them.

    If I may offer a suggestion? Maybe you could start bringing in a snack tray of veggies and low-cal dip and place that on your desk sometimes as a 'go to' when you're feeling the urge to grab that mini-Snickers? Or...maybe some mini-protein bars in a candy dish if you can just get 1 of them every now and then. I have Starlight chocolate-mint candies here that I eat like...2 or 3 of per day (they're 60 calories for 3 of them)....maybe get something that isn't quite so calorie-dense and put that in a container on *your* desk...so you have something at least a little better for you than Snickers or other options that co-workers have on theirs.

    A 40-calorie mini Snickers was too evil of a treat and you are suggesting sixty calorie mints?
    Just a suggestion...it might help if you have your own dish full of something that you can have *every once in a while* without feeling deprived of something. :)

    I do agree it's not fair to expect them not to bring treats in...because not everyone you work with is in the same boat as you, but...there are things you can do to divert your attention away from the goodies. Bring your own! :smile:

    That would totally make sense if the OP wasn't trying to throw her coworkers under the bus like it's their fault. She was trying to pass the buck for her own lack of will power.

    I feel your pain OP. My office always has something terribly unhealthy lying around. Most days I can avoid it, but it's a constant struggle for me. The bowl is right next to the copier I use so I have to pass it often throughout the day. And yes, not everyone else in this office is on a diet but some should be, they are way overweight. It's just not healthy to have candy and donuts as a snack everyday.

    I have all kinds of candy IN my office for my co-workers. Get a grip, and stop stuffing your face. Don't make others suffer because you have no willpower. I mean really how dare you tell them what they can and can not do because you're on a diet. Then blame them for your lack of motivation. Keep snacks in your desk just for you.

    Sorry, but I can't really feel sorry for you. I have been cutting down for 3 1/2 months now, and I work in a medical office where my coworkers are always bringing in yummy treats, just last week someone made homemade fudge brownies, and patients CONSTANTLY bring in "thank you" treats" such as donuts and cookies, and don't even get me started when it comes to the holidays...chocolate boxes EVERYWHERE, not to mention the fact that we have drug rep catered lunches at least 2 x a week, where lunch is FREE...so yeah......no sympathy here, sorry! lol I have learned to not go where those treats are, and if someone offers me something, I politely say no thank you. I have learned to keep focused on my work, and just stay away from it. You cannot expect people to not bring in things because you are dieting. That would be like asking people not to have meat for lunch because someone in the office is a vegetarian, it doesn't work like that. You are responsible for what goes in your mouth and what doesn't. To really ask others to not bring in things is crazy. Food is everywhere, you can't just stay in a box forever, however, you can say no thanks. Good luck. :noway:

    The 60 calorie mints are THREE of them...for 60 cal. (2 for 40, 1 for 20, etc). IF she's at work all day long and as she stated she can only walk by the candy dishes so many times before she has issues fighting the urge to grab one....it might behoove her to have something on *her* desk that she can have more of...for not as many calories (3 Snickers would be 120 cal versus 60 for three of something else). Goodness gracious, me oh my. -_-

    The OP came here with a childish rant - actually admitted she's asked people to change to accomodate her health project - and the community identified the problem = her lack of discipline.

    Letting her know what her problem is is the responsible thing to do. The irresponsible thing would be to pat her on the head without offering any kind of constructive solution to it.

    If you see "making her feeling like crap", maybe you haven't identified where OP's weak point is yet? It is a lifestyle change and if OP keeps eating everything in her office, don't you think that staying away from the "temptations" will bring success.

    Moderation is usually also mentioned in this context, so for good measure I'll encourage OP to look over her calories and see if she can fit in maybe a day or two of treats at the office, if they are that important to her. Maybe she feels excluded in her current situation?

    I am beginning to think it's legitimately cruel to bring candy for co-workers to share at the office. I don't know how many times I have to ask people not to bring it in but it's like no one cares. I am trying so hard not to snack and it becomes so much harder when almost everyone has some sort of treat at their desk. I can only walk by it so many times without taking something.

    I am sure I will get a ton of "no one is forcing you to eat it" and you're right. But my "friends" sure don't make it any easier for me. I notoriously have no will power. Why do people want to tempt me?? They think it's nice and I guess once in a while it's a nice treat, but to fill the candy bucket that you've had in your office since Halloween on a weekly basis is just not necessary. And it's always the people that don't eat it themselves! When you stop smoking or drinking or whatever, the professionals all say to stay away from things that trigger you. The amazing cookies that someone brought in today to say thank you for bridal shower gift is certainly a trigger. And it is right next to my cube! This articles helps prove my point.

    Sorry for the rant. I'm just really upset about it. I am working really hard to be good. I am a working mom with an almost 2 hour commute each way and working out once I get home is really hard for me. I am not always able to burn the extra calories to make up for one bite size snickers. It can ruin my whole day. Okay, rant over. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

    I'm sorry are you not an adult who can make their own decisions about what they do or do not eat? I get it might be tempting, but to seriously ask them to NOT bring it in because YOU don't want it. Seriously, is the office and the world only revolve around you?

    I get it's tempting, I really do. There are doughnuts brought into my office almost weekly. Doughnuts are my kryptonite.

    Here's the thing, you're making a lifestyle change, for you, and only you. Not everyone in the office. So either learn how to fit it into your day, or put your big girl panties on and don't eat it.

    Can you guys move the bowl somewhere a bit more remote, like a counter in the kitchen or the receptionist's desk? Having the candy present is one thing but I don't know anyone who'd object to moving it to a place you'd have to work harder to get at it.

    We all have bad days, we all rant about stuff. We don't throw the the baby out with the bathwater and blame our lack of willpower and our inability to say "no" on such insignificant things as the candy dish someone puts out at the office. C'mon now.

    I agree with you on this, completely. However, there are ways to say things that are much less abrasive, more respectful, and less rude than what I'm seeing in this post from *several* people. If we're all here with the same goal in mind (the well-being of our bodies)...I just think saying things in a supportive manner would go a lot further than sarcasm and snarkiness. =/

    Try being on here for 3+ years and see how long you still "say things in a supportive manner."

    I can understand your problem. My office used to be the hub of snacks. I work at the reception desk and everyone comes here for their candies and cakes and stuff. I had it all moved upstairs to the kitchen. Maybe just see if they can move it.

    I'm really concerned with the 2 hours commute and must address that before answering the original post.

    2 hours each way means 4 hours PLUS the usual 8 hours of working? So 12 hours a day? Forgive me if I've lost touch not having worked in awhile but that seems like a LOT of time to be away from home, and especially if you're not happy. I know someone jokingly suggested leaving that job and I actually kinda think that's a good idea. Even though you will have to develop your willpower/discipline/shineoncandy muscles no matter where you work b/c Halloween's coming, then Xmas, etc etc.

    I'd make a pro con's list and start out by taking stock of your salary and factoring in your commute time as part of your "hours" to get your hourly pay. Also factor in wear and tear on your car, and gas money, more frequent oil changes, etc.

    Then compare that to how a lower paying job near your home would compare.

    Don't forget to include the snickers in your Pro and Con list. (I'd list it as a "pro" and I'll explain why later).

    Now for your evil evil co workers. They might be feeling generous, community minded, bored, festive whatever. If this does not fit your fitness goals the best option is not to piss in their cheerios. I'd bring your own bowl (99cents store has cheap ones) and then fill it with whatever fits your eating style/plan. Protein bars. Granola bars. Apples and oranges. Packaged 100 calorie snack bags, whatever! You never know who might swing by your desk and chit chat while reaching into your bowl. Or who might be positively influenced to change their own ideas snacking habits. Do your thang. Be an agent for change. Lead by example.

    Finally bring a giant empty bag and stuff it under your desk. When you are cruising by their desks be sure to grab a handful of candy each time and when back at your desk stuff them in your bag. Repeat.

    You should have a bag full of free halloween candy to give they kiddo's by early October this way without spending your own money.

    Another thing to consider - I have a few colleagues who garden, and they routinely bring in cucumbers, muscadine grapes, whatever's in season. It's really easy to walk past the candy and grab a grape. It would be really cool if you could be "the girl with the fruit basket." After bottomless supplies of Hersheys bars, I always would kill for a fruit salad - be somebody's hero!

    Okay...I will credit you a +1 in my mental notes of "that person made a good point". I AM NEW here...and as such...I don't have the thick skin that many do, and I haven't seen all the posts that many have...but I still plan on saying things in a supportive manner regardless of how long I am here for, because that's who I am.

    In any case...you did make a good point...I haven't seen everything many of you have and I'm sure it might get frustrating over time.

    OP...I still think you need your own candy dish full of something you can eat guilt-free....so your co-workers can do the same with theirs. =)

    Don't blame your co-workers for your lack of willpower. My co-workers bring in cookies sometimes, even cakes and other things they bake. I choose not to eat them because I eat low carb. Hell, sometimes I even bake something and bring it in for people to enjoy. Am I a bad person for doing that? I'm PMSing, so I'm probably overly emotional, but get over yourself and take responsibility for your own actions. If you overindulge in what your co-workers bring in, that's on YOU, NOT them.

    I'd be pretty pissed off if I found out a colleague of mine was doing that with the candy I bought with my hard-earned money for my coworkers to enjoy. If you don't want to eat it, don't eat it. But don't be a jerk for the sake of being mean.

    I do agree w/ others here. BUT I have a slightly different approach to this sort of thing. I decide what is TRULY "worth it" to me and then I indulge in those things, in small portions/quantities, when they are available.

    Some sort of homemade cheesecake slash dump cake thing - no
    Halloween candy - no (because one is too many and ten is still not enough)
    someone's random birthday cake from Walmart - I take a piece to be polite and eat 1 bite of frosting, then trash the rest
    See's dark chocolate assortment - yes, I will have 1 per day until they're gone
    glazed donuts - no
    bagels from Panera - no
    Krispy Kreme crème filled with chocolate icing - yes, and I'll eat a seriously tiny lunch of vegetables to make up for it
    cupcakes from a bakery that look pretty but don't taste that great - no
    brownies from a questionably clean kitchen - nope
    homemade caramels a vendor brings in at Christmas - yes, I will have 1 per day until they're gone

    If she cant control herself around a 40 calorie snickers what makes you think she won't have 10 or 30 of those 20 calorie mints (3x per serving 60/3).

    At the end of the day the OP needs to learn self control, accountability and develop a healthy relationship with food, even seemingly healthy food can contribute to gaining weight if you are at a calorie surplus.

    My wife bought me a giant 5 lb bag of trolli sour gummy worms for my birthday this past April (true story and they are my favorite candy of all time). If I were the OP I should be insanely upset with her because she knows I love these, I'm serious about my diet and that she's contributing to my obesity. Wrong. 6 of the sour worms are only 60 calories and I have been slowly working on them since then. I still have 1/3 of the bag left, and it's now September.

    With self control I am able to enjoy my favorite treat, and I have that 5 lb sitting right next to me everyday at the office. If I can control myself around my favorite food so can the OP.

  • Not to sound like a 12-step poster but "own your own program". Are you bringing your healthy snacks to the office. If you have something at your desk worth looking forward to it will be easier to walk past. Try the emerald dark chocolate peanut butter or cinnamon almonds. They are delightful and good for you. It is up to you to stay in the safe zone with your eating, no one else. My coworkers know I watch my food, so they bring it in but don't offer it to me verbally. It's a struggle but finding balance can't be the responsibility of others.:flowerforyou:

    I have always eaten healthy.....just too much of it. During a long-term project one of the teams decided that every Friday people would bring snacks and treats and we would eat our own lunch together and then share what we brought ( easy to do in a country with 2-hour lunch breaks ). I used to take " healthy " stuff like partially frozen home made yogurt to which fresh fruit could be added, fruit salad, dip with raw vegetables and more often than not the stuff would be left and I had to throw it out. People preferred frozen egg rolls, even if they were limp from being heated up in the microwave, potato and corn chips, all kinds of twinkie-type stuff, commercially made cup cakes and really horrible Coolwhip with marshmallow desserts etc. After a while I decided to do the same and usually the things were eaten.....and if not they did not turn bad in a day, but were still ok on Monday, Tuesday or a week after. No one ever noticed that I did not eat any of the stuff and only had a piece of fruit, or a cup of coffee.
    I don't think you can expect that a whole office adjusts to your needs ( unless you are only two or three people ). You need to find a way to be responsible for yourself and your way of eating and not expect others to do the job for you.

    A 40-calorie mini Snickers was too evil of a treat and you are suggesting sixty calorie mints?

    The 60 calorie mints are THREE of them...for 60 cal. (2 for 40, 1 for 20, etc). IF she's at work all day long and as she stated she can only walk by the candy dishes so many times before she has issues fighting the urge to grab one....it might behoove her to have something on *her* desk that she can have more of...for not as many calories (3 Snickers would be 120 cal versus 60 for three of something else). Goodness gracious, me oh my. -_-

    If she cant control herself around a 40 calorie snickers what makes you think she won't have 10 or 30 of those 20 calorie mints (3x per serving 60/3).

    At the end of the day the OP needs to learn self control, accountability and develop a healthy relationship with food, even seemingly healthy food can contribute to gaining weight if you are at a calorie surplus.

    My wife bought me a giant 5 lb bag of trolli sour gummy worms for my birthday this past April (true story and they are my favorite candy of all time). If I were the OP I should be insanely upset with her because she knows I love these, I'm serious about my diet and that she's contributing to my obesity. Wrong. 6 of the sour worms are only 60 calories and I have been slowly working on them since then. I still have 1/3 of the bag left, and it's now September.

    With self control I am able to enjoy my favorite treat, and I have that 5 lb sitting right next to me everyday at the office. If I can control myself around my favorite food so can the OP.

  • I am beginning to think it's legitimately cruel to bring candy for co-workers to share at the office. I don't know how many times I have to ask people not to bring it in but it's like no one cares. I am trying so hard not to snack and it becomes so much harder when almost everyone has some sort of treat at their desk. I can only walk by it so many times without taking something.

    I am sure I will get a ton of "no one is forcing you to eat it" and you're right. But my "friends" sure don't make it any easier for me. I notoriously have no will power. Why do people want to tempt me?? They think it's nice and I guess once in a while it's a nice treat, but to fill the candy bucket that you've had in your office since Halloween on a weekly basis is just not necessary. And it's always the people that don't eat it themselves! When you stop smoking or drinking or whatever, the professionals all say to stay away from things that trigger you. The amazing cookies that someone brought in today to say thank you for bridal shower gift is certainly a trigger. And it is right next to my cube! This articles helps prove my point.

    Sorry for the rant. I'm just really upset about it. I am working really hard to be good. I am a working mom with an almost 2 hour commute each way and working out once I get home is really hard for me. I am not always able to burn the extra calories to make up for one bite size snickers. It can ruin my whole day. Okay, rant over. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

    OK I'm going to try not to be sarcastic.....here goes:
    Do you work in the kind of environment where you could politely say to your coworkers something like - "I'm really struggling to stay on track, and although I don't expect you to change to suit me, I would be so grateful if the office treats could be put somewhere that's not so tempting for me? Just for a little while, until I can get my willpower under control?" Maybe they would agree to have a bowl of treats in a cupboard in the lunchroom, out of sight, out of mind? If you get along with your coworkers, they may respond favorably to a mature, respectful conversation about it.

    But if they don't, then it reverts back to the other "too bad, so sad" comments.
