Office Treats - Not cool Rant

I am beginning to think it's legitimately cruel to bring candy for co-workers to share at the office. I don't know how many times I have to ask people not to bring it in but it's like no one cares. I am trying so hard not to snack and it becomes so much harder when almost everyone has some sort of treat at their desk. I can only walk by it so many times without taking something.

I am sure I will get a ton of "no one is forcing you to eat it" and you're right. But my "friends" sure don't make it any easier for me. I notoriously have no will power. Why do people want to tempt me?? They think it's nice and I guess once in a while it's a nice treat, but to fill the candy bucket that you've had in your office since Halloween on a weekly basis is just not necessary. And it's always the people that don't eat it themselves! When you stop smoking or drinking or whatever, the professionals all say to stay away from things that trigger you. The amazing cookies that someone brought in today to say thank you for bridal shower gift is certainly a trigger. And it is right next to my cube! This articles helps prove my point.

Sorry for the rant. I'm just really upset about it. I am working really hard to be good. I am a working mom with an almost 2 hour commute each way and working out once I get home is really hard for me. I am not always able to burn the extra calories to make up for one bite size snickers. It can ruin my whole day. Okay, rant over. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

    lol

My desk USED to be where the candy was located - I always had a jar of candy on my desk - THEN I changed the way am eating and the candy STOPPED coming to work! So now I have three different Empty Candy jars in my desk cabinet just waiting to be used (they are seasonal - one for Halloween, one for Christmas, and one for Every other day of the year)

Two of my other co-workers USED to also keep candy on their desks - NOT anymore...NOT my doing, I didn't ask them to do this - these are choices they've made all on their own!

Now, with Halloween approaching I may STILL bring in one or two bags of Candy Corn - it's a tradition thing around here - but when it's gone, it's gone!

There's also always something to snack on in the kitchen - be it cake, donuts, bagels, etc. etc. etc. it's just up to ME to decide not to indulge unless I know I can work it off laters.

On of the other gals I work with tends to bring in fresh veggies too from her Garden and sometimes we'll eat some of those if they are something that doesn't require cooking or a large knife to get through (we're only allowed blades smaller than 2", don't ask)

My co-workers have learned to just stop asking me if I want anything that's in the kitchen...they know the answer will be a Polite No and just don't bother - it's become a running joke of sorts, but they've learned to respect my eating and food choices.

In time your co-workers will too, and who knows they may turn their own eating choices upside down on their own ;-)

Another thing to consider - I have a few colleagues who garden, and they routinely bring in cucumbers, muscadine grapes, whatever's in season. It's really easy to walk past the candy and grab a grape. It would be really cool if you could be "the girl with the fruit basket." After bottomless supplies of Hersheys bars, I always would kill for a fruit salad - be somebody's hero!

If someone brought a bowl of cucumbers to work that's the desk I'd make sure to walk past several times a day.

Try being on here for 3+ years and see how long you still "say things in a supportive manner."

Okay...I will credit you a +1 in my mental notes of "that person made a good point". I AM NEW here...and as such...I don't have the thick skin that many do, and I haven't seen all the posts that many have...but I still plan on saying things in a supportive manner regardless of how long I am here for, because that's who I am.

In any case...you did make a good point...I haven't seen everything many of you have and I'm sure it might get frustrating over time.

Thank you for making me look at it in a different way...in a respectfully stated sentence.

OP...I still think you need your own candy dish full of something you can eat guilt-free....so your co-workers can do the same with theirs. =)
This is the internet. You'll be far more successful here if you stop schooling adults, like you've tried a few times earlier in the thread. Just let people be how they are and let the mods do their job. Also, Gandhi: "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." Focus on your own thing.

This is to general you: Now, some are rude and some are not. The rude and non-rude people may deliver the same - Very Important - message. Don't shoot the messenger, no matter how ugly, sweaty, oily-haired, bad-breathy they are, because the Message is what's important. If it is of value, grab it and hold on to it. If it is insignificant, discard immediately.

Some newbies use the smelly messenger as excuse not to look closely at the Message. Don't be that newbie. Help yourself and choose honesty, no matter how ugly its messenger may look. Take responsibility of your own health, your strength as a human being. Stay on course, don't get caught up on irrelevant sidetracks. The ugly messenger is an irrelevant sidetrack, but their Message may be Very Important.

You could bring in healthier treats like fruit or veggie trays. This may encourage others to do so as well but likely people will still bring in candy. Try to come up with a way to counter eating the candy/break the habit of grabbing it and eating it.

    Examples:
when you walk by and want the candy walk a couple laps around the office or outside
take a piece but keep a jar at your desk and drop it in there and use it as a measure of all the times you avoided temptation
grab a piece and give it to someone at another desk working hard

the point is teaching your brain you can do something besides eat the candy

If she cant control herself around a 40 calorie snickers what makes you think she won't have 10 or 30 of those 20 calorie mints (3x per serving 60/3).

hmm...kk, good point, you. *waves white flag*

Finally bring a giant bag and stuff it under your desk. When you are cruising by their desks be sure to grab a handful of candy each time and when back at your desk stuff them in your bag. Repeat.

You should have a bag full of free halloween candy to give they kiddo's by early October this way without spending your own money.

    Your welcome.

I'd be pretty pissed off if I found out a colleague of mine was doing that with the candy I bought with my hard-earned money for my coworkers to enjoy. If you don't want to eat it, don't eat it. But don't be a jerk for the sake of being mean.

OP just making sure I understand, so you are a victim, you have no personal responsibility, everyone is out to get you, and it's always someone else's fault. Now you complain about co-workers, what happens when you walk around town, should we close down all the bakeries, restaurants, and anything else that might force you to consume food??

Get a grip with reality, grow up and take responsibility for your actions, not everyone around you must suffer because you decided to go on a diet.

As the original poster, this was my favorite response so far!! Seriously funny.

You have my respect for playing along and not getting all "you guys are mean" on us. It's a calorie counting website, we are all b!tchy. :)

This. Plus the one who said "Unicorns farting rainbpws" - lost 100 calories spewing my lunch all over the monitor as I laughed...

  • maybe don't visit their desks? I mean, I'm sure everyone else appreciates that they bring the candy in. *shrugs*

A 40-calorie mini Snickers was too evil of a treat and you are suggesting sixty calorie mints?

The 60 calorie mints are THREE of them...for 60 cal. (2 for 40, 1 for 20, etc). IF she's at work all day long and as she stated she can only walk by the candy dishes so many times before she has issues fighting the urge to grab one....it might behoove her to have something on *her* desk that she can have more of...for not as many calories (3 Snickers would be 120 cal versus 60 for three of something else). Goodness gracious, me oh my. -_-

If she cant control herself around a 40 calorie snickers what makes you think she won't have 10 or 30 of those 20 calorie mints (3x per serving 60/3).

At the end of the day the OP needs to learn self control, accountability and develop a healthy relationship with food, even seemingly healthy food can contribute to gaining weight if you are at a calorie surplus.

My wife bought me a giant 5 lb bag of trolli sour gummy worms for my birthday this past April (true story and they are my favorite candy of all time). If I were the OP I should be insanely upset with her because she knows I love these, I'm serious about my diet and that she's contributing to my obesity. Wrong. 6 of the sour worms are only 60 calories and I have been slowly working on them since then. I still have 1/3 of the bag left, and it's now September.

With self control I am able to enjoy my favorite treat, and I have that 5 lb sitting right next to me everyday at the office. If I can control myself around my favorite food so can the OP.

Not to mention the fact that if you are craving chocolate, mints just aren't going to cut it. :noway:

Sorry your "friends" are trying to brighten the dismal setting of your office by providing a few sweet treats to make the days less dreary.

If she cant control herself around a 40 calorie snickers what makes you think she won't have 10 or 30 of those 20 calorie mints (3x per serving 60/3).

hmm...kk, good point, you. *waves white flag*

Just a fact, there's no substitute for learning responsibility, moderation and accountability. You can lose weight eating all of your favorite foods and you can do it for a lifetime. Pretending your co-workers, friends and family are out to get you will only lead to failure.

:flowerforyou: I likey this post, and thank you. And yes...sometimes I *do* "school" adults. It isn't on purpose, I just don't like seeing people say things to another human being in such a rough, callous manner...it bothers me. As stated..I *am* new here...but this post here...yes... thnx, I needed to read it, and you worded it in a way that made me read it and not auto-ignore you. I'll try harder to be a bit more open minded and see the message others are conveying...even if they aren't conveying it in a way I think is appropriate.

I feel your pain OP. My office always has something terribly unhealthy lying around. Most days I can avoid it, but it's a constant struggle for me. The bowl is right next to the copier I use so I have to pass it often throughout the day. And yes, not everyone else in this office is on a diet but some should be, they are way overweight. It's just not healthy to have candy and donuts as a snack everyday.

Can you guys move the bowl somewhere a bit more remote, like a counter in the kitchen or the receptionist's desk? Having the candy present is one thing but I don't know anyone who'd object to moving it to a place you'd have to work harder to get at it.

I think they should put it at the top of three flights of stairs.

If someone brought a bowl of cucumbers to work that's the desk I'd make sure to walk past several times a day.

thanks for reminding me...i forgot to eat my cucumber today!!

I had a college instructor that would draw a salad on the chalk board and write GOOD above it. Then he would draw a piece of cake (chocolate in my mind) and write BAD above it.

So...candy jar BAD. Candy jar GRUBBY with other people's fingers and GERMS. Just like a shared bowl of peanuts at a bar where no one washes their hands after going to the restroom.

Fruit GOOD, your snack drawer GOOD. :drinker:

    BAD GERMS GRUBBY

Hi! I'm the OP and have responded about three pages back. Just want to say again that you were all right. Some of you used supportive words and others were quite harsh. I took both types of comments and came to the conclusion that it's in my hands. I can make the decision to eat the snacks or not. Even the ridiculous amounts of "get a grip" comments are helpful. So thanks. I needed that kick in the pants. *whispers* Can it please stop now *huddles in corner with arms protecting head"?

One thing about it -- life is seldom fair or kind. All you can do is enjoy the good moments and weather the storms.

There's no harm in indulging in occasional treats if you really want them. The best thing you can do is just pick your battles. Sacrifices can be made elsewhere if you feel any sort of guilt about indulgences. It's a matter of give and take. Just be reasonable about your expectations.

I found it very difficult to overcome office treat temptation when I was losing my weight. However, now that I am all fit and sexy I just sit at my desk and smile smugly while the pigs feed at the trough... That is all. *Note: I got and still get nasty comments about how I don't eat (like they couldn't see my healthy snacks -OR- that I was eating 5-6x per day) or that I work out too much. Sorry, not sorry that my healthier lifestyle makes you feel insecure ;)

Not to sound like a 12-step poster but "own your own program". Are you bringing your healthy snacks to the office. If you have something at your desk worth looking forward to it will be easier to walk past. Try the emerald dark chocolate peanut butter or cinnamon almonds. They are delightful and good for you. It is up to you to stay in the safe zone with your eating, no one else. My coworkers know I watch my food, so they bring it in but don't offer it to me verbally. It's a struggle but finding balance can't be the responsibility of others.:flowerforyou:

    Honestly this.^

Hubby's paleo and we are going to a party this weekend where there will likely be a bunch of things he chooses not to eat. So I'm gonna buy a deviled eggs taker for 3 bucks at Party City and make some deviled eggs to take so I can be sure there is at least one thing he can eat. I plan to top half with crumbled bacons, half with cayenne pepper, and half with tomato slices. Then another half I'm gonna leave plain. If I have time I might chop some chives for another half. I know I went way over on halves here but I never claimed to be a math genius.

Just a fact, there's no substitute for learning responsibility, moderation and accountability. You can lose weight eating all of your favorite foods and you can do it for a lifetime. Pretending your co-workers, friends and family are out to get you will only lead to failure.

    You...you and your logic...

You can do this OP++++ You will always have the power over anything in your life.

    Charming.
