Over 40s - What do you do to stay in shape?
Replies

Walk for an hour every night, rain or shine. I also walk a lot during the day. It's only 10,000 steps by my fitbit, but my husband walks with me and he gets 13,000 out of it (grumble).0

I lift things up and put them down three times a week.
I eat food I've made rather than prepacked 'food' as much as possible.
I walk at lunch for an hour.
I walk to places that are 2 miles / 3 km or closer rather than take the car.
I run up stairs.
I eschew elevators when possible.0 -
55 here. For the first 2 years or so, I just made sure I got in my 10,000 steps a day and did yoga and barre3 for 15-30 minutes every day at home. 4 weeks ago I signed up to take two 30 minute Weight training sessions a week with a PT. It's game changing.0

I run. I lift heavy things. I do yoga. I typically get in 3 workouts a week, about two hours each.
Edit: I'm 41.0 -
42 years old.
I lift 5 days per week, eat well all week (keeping carbs fairly low to stay full), and drink heavily on the weekends.
Dating younger women helps, too.0 -
Well, I am still trying to get in shape, but right now I am doing strength training twice a week, and i am training for a half marathon so I am running four times a week. I walk at least forty minutes nearly everyday, but that is purely recreation and commuting my daughter to preschool. I am finding it much hard to reach my fitness goals than it was in my twenties and thirties. It's fun, though.
Oh, and I am 41 but I still feel twenty six, lol.0 -
I run, and sometimes I walk up a hill and down again.
I used to kayak, ski, mountain climb, do gymnastics, dance and weight train. I'll do these things again in my fifties (except, perhaps, the gymnastics). I was never into sports, but if you think you are, there are lots of opportunities. Choose what you like to do!!0 -
I'm 46. For the past three years I do three days of weights (dumbbells at home, the heaviest i can manage, no gym or access or space for the big barbells unfortunately) with Nike Training Club app or vids at FitnessBlender.com (both are free) for 30-40 minutes or so, then usually 20 minutes of some sort of cardio, short kickboxing DVD or a walk with my dogs. Actually I walk my dogs most days. The other three days I run from 30-60 minutes depending on the day, weather, how much time I have, etc.
Always at least one day off per week, sometimes two, a full week off every 8-12 weeks. And if I'm feeling sore or tired from a tough workout, I will throw in a lighter routine, go with just bodyweight exercises or some yoga or something.
Been working great for me - I hit goal weight over 2 years ago and have kept it off.0 -
54 years old. 45 minutes elliptical/ 4 days a week. 1 hour cross training/ 5 days a week. Recently started with a sports nutritionist. It's all working, better shape now than in high school.0

Am 72. Have a touch of arthritis and trick back (who doesn't by now) Currently do resistance (bow-flex) 45 min 2-3 time a week and yoga 35-40 min (don't count end rest) 2-3 times a week. Works so have a total of 4-5 times a week. Today mowed the yard on riding mower for 90 min and worked in the garden 90 min so that was it. Plan is to add minutes and then at least one more session per week in the next month or two.0

Don't think anyone would have thought you'd take on a bunch of 5 year olds. That'd just be unfair.
(Mind you, I did play dodgeball with 15 or 16 six year olds yesterday at a party.)0 -
I lost all my weight this year. I'm nearly 60kg now, which is my goal. I did it without exercise. Just recently i bought a pedometer. I am trying to walk about 1000 steps a day. I do it in the process of chores and daily living. I want to try doing the HIIT 3minutes a la michael mosley but may not get around to it. That would be for cardiac fitness.
As to the rest, its just diet. I am happy to be so much more productive with my time than spending an hour a day or so on just fitness.
If i found a sport i liked, i'd consider it. Actually i have booked in for some tennis but i am not sure if that will come off.0 -
I just keep moving, trying to do better every day than the day before.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNhOK3eUeqk0

Mon - Weds - Fri are gym days, usually for about 70 mins of cardio (35 mins steady state, 35 mins intervals) and between 30 - 60 mins of lifting.
Tues and Thurs are either running or cycling days, plus a long ride one weekend day (usually Sunday), unless I'm on call, then I try and squeeze a run in, as I can a quick 5K in and still be back in time to respond to any calls.0 -

Hi, I'll be 43 in a few more weeks. I strength train three times a week for 45-60 minutes, intervals twice weekly for 20 minutes, and daily 15-20 minute walks too. Occasionally, I do yoga for 20-30 minutes.0
