    Hello Ladies:

It is a rainy, dreary day here, but we need the rain, so I can't really complain, but the humidity is wreaking havoc with my frizzy hair, let me tell you:sad:

Barbie - I bet you cannot wait to be settled in your new home:smile:

Jane - I agree, sometimes, we just need to sit back and count our blessings because sometimes we lose track of the good in our lives and we only concentrate on the bad:wink:

Viv - So glad to hear that you are well enough to go back to work. Just don't push yourself though :flowerforyou:

Robin - Sorry that you are having such a rough time at work, especially after all the nonsense you went through. I hope it straightens out for you:flowerforyou:

Kathy - Congratulations on getting your dream of the 3rd grade class. Good luck with that. Also, sorry to hear about the problems with your son, that must be very difficult for you to be going through but remember, we are here to listen, if you need us

    cbrown30303 - Welcome

Natalie - I will be thinking of you tomorrow. Just think of it, you will be fine and you are almost to the other side of being pain free:happy:

Vicki - So glad to hear that Rhea was okay; that was quite a scare you had:noway:

Sissy - The American Idol tour sounds like fun. My cruise with my DH is only 5 weeks away and unfortunately I won't make the goal I set for myself when I joined MFP but I am hoping to lose 5 lbs this month and I will be happy with that:laugh:

Kackie - I too, am trying to exercise at least 30 mins every day this month:ohwell:

Michele - I hope your Vince is okay:flowerforyou:

Chiclet - It sounds like these "friends" you have made might not really be friends after all. If they were, they would understand that you have obligations, especially if they are around our age, you would think they would be more understanding to your plight. They do sound demanding but don't let that get you down, you just keep on, keepin on, you are doing so well with what you have been handed. I admire you so much:love:

Jackie - Don't worry, you will get back on track and get it off:smile:

    CJ - Welcome:wink:

My step sister/best friend is having even more problems in her life and I feel so badly for her but there is still nothing I can do to help her but listen, much like we do on this thread, we listen to each other, but there is not too much we can do but offer encouragement and be there for each other.

My step mother was going to buy a condo and sell the big home that she and Dad lived in as it is way too big for her now and she can no longer take care of it and she knows it and it is in a very rural setting. So, she went and saw the condo, which is in a town setting, liked it, put the money down, which was great but then I talked to her yesterday and she backed out of the deal. She is not ready to move yet. Dad passed 2 1/2 years ago in the home they live in and she is just not ready to move on yet. Too bad because it is too much for her but what can you do, you cannot force her to sell when she is of sound mind and she is only 77 yrs old.

Anyway, that's it for today, my Friends. Talk to later. Have a great day.

    Love Cathy xx

    Hello All,

Sounds like everyone is having such a busy summer!

CJ: Welcome! This is a great place for support and friendship!

Auntie BK: So good to hear from you again. We are all in the same boat, so hop back on~!

Jackie: isn't it amazing how easily 3 pounds can get on and how LONG and difficult it is to get rid of 3? I am sure you will get right on it and it will be gone in no time! You're doing great.

Kathy: It sounds like you have your hands full, but that you are getting your son some good help. Rant away here...it is a good place to vent and maybe help with the emotional eating that I think most of us struggle with

Robin: Thinking of you and hoping you'll get things worked out at work

Natalie: Will be thinking of you tomorrow

Cathy: I have the frizzy hair problem too when it is humid or rains. I think that is another reason I like spending some of the hot months here in MT...it is mostly dry and cooler!

DH and I did a nice hike this morning...not as steep a climb as some we did with the "kids", but still a nice workout. Then had lunch in the village. I did have some sweet potato fries...felt like I had earned them?! Will try to stick to a lighter dinner tonight.
There is a rodeo here that we are planning to attend...some PBR thing...professional Bull riding? Nothing I've ever been to but should be fun.

Missed some folks as always, but hope each of you has a good day. So glad that you are here, Kackie:heart:

    hi all!

First of all, let me confess: I'm a list-builder. So.....

    1) Cathy, Kackie, Barbie, Michelle, Marilyn (and all those I missed) - Thank You for your wonderful long notes to everyone! Are you some of the official den mothers? You're all so warm and welcoming, I just want to send you props for that.

    2) Lots of appreciation for the inspiration for so many of you who have already lost so much weight and gained so much health. Kudos to you, ladies! It's truly a huge inspiration and I know it took a lot of work to get there. Thank you!

    3) A quick update on me. I've been under the weather for several weeks and unable to work out, but I felt well enough to go swimming today for the first time in weeks. I was dismayed to find I pooped out after only 25 minutes, but you have to (re)start somewhere, right? In any case, it felt great to just get my body off the couch and moving again - yay for me!

That's it for me - have a good one.

    Hello everyone,

Just marking my spot. The kids and I are off to Colorado for a long weekend camping trip. I will not be able to post my calories and dread the "starting over of days" again. I wish they had a way to give us all 10-14 vacation days a year. lol

Take care and I hope everyone is doing well.

    Hi all,
Things are still chaotic at work but I do think it will get better.
I want to first of all apologize to all of you. I feel so bad not having the time or energy to respond to you all. I miss doing that. (if any of you were around last summer I was very active on this thread.) I don't have many friends or even aquaintences so I rely on all of you so much and right now I don't consider myself a very good friend in return. I hope that I can do better in the near future but so much is topsy turvy right now. please no that you all mean a great deal to me.

    Have wonderful evening.

Went to yoga this morning then the deep water. I was running late so I forgwent breakfast but had an apple after the deep water. Maybe it's my imagination, but I didn't seem to have the stamina that I usually have when taking the deep water. We did a really neat exercise with the paddles that's for your wrist. Now did that help or not, that I don't know. But I can tell you that when we went to the bowling league, out of all 3 games, I broke 100 all three times. 135, 117, then (ouch!) 103

This guy who is a REALLY good bowler isn't working right now so Fri after my boob squeeze I'm going to give him a call and hopefully, he'll be able to give me some pointers. I'm probably going to make him a key lime cake as a thank-you

Tomorrow I go for my routine physical. You know, blood work and all that jazz. Then, a friend and I are going to meet up for lunch. At the Newcomer's gala in Feb. I won a free massage to the woman this friend goes to so I'll have the massage after lunch. I've pretty muchly decided what I'm going to have. On a wheat wrap there's mushrooms, spinach, feta cheese and pesto. There was another sandwich I was considering, it had hummus, tomato, and cuke in a pita pocket, but I'm not all that sure that that's going to fill me up. We're just going to have fish for dinner. I don't know that I'll be able to get any exercise in as I usually exercise in the a.m. and I really don't want to exercise on an empty stomach. I have dry cereal in the car that I'll have as soon as they take the blood.

Natalie - I'm so glad for you that the surgery is on. Just think of the pain you're in right now. Pretty soon you'll be saying "why didn't I do this sooner?"

Sissy - I'm so with you. I find it so interesting to learn new things from the people on this board.

CJ - so glad to have you with us. Tell us more about yourself.

Gilda - yea for getting back into exercising! Baby steps. Maybe you pooped out after only 25 minutes today, the next time it will probably be after 30 minutes. You'll build yourself back up, that's for sure. I know, it happened to me. I built myself back up in a few month's time.

Jam - I think it was barbie who told me that MFP recognizes you having logged in if you enter even one thing each day. Maybe you can try adding something, anything, for future days and let us know how that works. That way, you won't lose your days. Have a great time in Colorado!

Robin - you are a great friend. Friendship is about understanding that we all have our ups and downs. As the saying goes "the best conversation I had with my friend was the one where not a word was said".

Hope everyone has a great evening!

    Hi Everyone.

Barbie, thanks for the article about the scale. I’m avoiding the scale and having a weigh-in once a month. In theory I am doing what I plan to do for the rest of my life. Thus, the scale should not be a major factor in my habits.

Kackie, I’ll let you know how giving up wine works out for me. I miss my glass of wine.

Sally, I get lots of work done when I step away from the computer. Sometimes I feel like the computer works like quicksand – once I’m on I can’t get off.

Chicklet, be kind and true to yourself. Real friends will understand.

Michele, your husband sounds like my father, who can be difficult at times. Good luck.

Viv, hope your day back to work went well.

Kathy, design a plan to help you with the stress. Sometimes I have to plan to drink herbal tea or snack on berries. Try to get sufficient sleep and eat a good breakfast. You can do this.

    Natalie, good luck with surgery.

Sissy, I can so relate to the ups and downs of eating and exercise. I have a much harder time with food than exercise. Intellectually I know what I should do, but don’t. I wish I could find the button in my brain and emotions that would make food a non-issue with me.

    Welcome CJ.

Cathy, my mother is the same age as your step-mom. Having my mother change anything is quite a challenge. She is well rooted in her ways and emotions.

Gilda, don’t be too hard on yourself. You are off to a good start.

Three days into August and working on my goals is very challenging. My leg pain is trying to keep me from running. Since I'm off work until the last week of August, I am tempted to sleep late and avoid exercising while eating whatever I wish. Tomorrow is another day. I need to go to bed before I taste the cake that DH just baked.

    Hi

Just a quick one, wanted to say:

GOOD LUCK NATALIE for your surgery today, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well I am back at work today and very nervous, I'm sure I'll soon get back into the swing of things, and I have a few days off next week. Monday we have to take the cat to the vet for a dental and Tuesday I'm going to see my niece's new baby girl (Indiana). Plus I'm going away for a few days on 15th August, so there's a few things to look forward to.

It's a misty day so far this morning, I think that means we are in for a sunny day once it clears. It was quite hot yesterday, I was sat outside for a while but had to come inside, then we had a thunder storm later in the afternoon and the rain - wow! Don't often get storms like that! After about an hour or so the sun came back out, but it was a lot fresher and not so humid.

Suppose I'd better get in the shower and get ready.

    Have a good day everyone.

Natalie - good luck with your surgery

CJ103 - welcome! I just recently joined and am thankful that I have found a support group - reading everyone's messages has made it easier to keep my diet and keep up the exercise although it can be a struggle from day to day especially when the heat and humidity kick in. Add me as a friend if you like.

I am thinking of Natalie and hoping she is resting comfortably and the surgery is over. I remember my TKR's so clearly.....she will do fine. Although, I am no so sure she will think so for a few days.

I am at work and just about ready to go take a walk as I am tired of doing my dictations. I am catching up and only have 7 more to do.....I just need to get away from them for a bit. So a little half mile walk will do me good.

    Hi Ladies:

Hoping you all are okay. My thoughts are with Natalie today but by now she will already be done and on the road to rocovery. Here's to hoping she has an easy path.

I was doing well walking every morning before work but I have hurt my foot somehow. It is the same foot that I have had 3 surgeries on so it is a little sensitive anyway. I am not sure what I did but it is so painful I can barely walk on it at the moment and it is my right foot, so it was even painful to use my foot to use the gas and brake pedals to drive. I wish I knew what I did. It is the darndest thing, I was just walking and then the sharpest pain just went through my foot and to the damaged toe. I hope it fixes soon as I truly want to continue on the path of more exercise as I feel that is what I need to get my weight moving off.

Well, take care, Ladies, I will talk to you tomorrow.

    Love, Cathy xx

:grumble: :grumble: :grumble: I’m tired of thinking about moving. There’s not much we can do until escrow closes so I’m turning my thoughts to something else.

:flowerforyou: I’m still reading “The Thin Commandments”. The chapter I just finished is about taking charge of your favorite foods. This is a topic frequently debated on MFP. One side says that you shouldn’t eliminate any foods you love because you’ll feel deprived and react by binging. The other side says that it’s best to completely eliminate any food that you think you can’t control. Unless you’re an alcoholic or drug addict and have to completely abstain from these substances, there is a middle ground that will work.

:flowerforyou: The first suggestions for taking charge of your favorite foods is the obvious one about limiting the availability of the food ( don’t buy it, or if you buy it, put it away where you can’t see it, and buy it in small quantities)

:flowerforyou: Next is limiting it to special occasions and being specific about what those occasions are.

:flowerforyou: Take time to be mindful of your past experience with the food. If you can’t remember ever being moderate in the eating of a food, consider staying away from it. Tell yourself “If I don’t begin, then I don’t have a problem”. Many people find it liberating to completely eliminate certain foods.

 Learn to reward yourself in an adult way with treats that aren’t food.

:flowerforyou: In some cases, the more you eat, the more you crave. Foods like this might be ones you want to eliminate.

:flowerforyou: I am still wrestling with my relationship with peanut butter and almond butter and haven’t found a good solution. I’ve had better results with dessert foods. I stay away from dessert foods, don’t have them in the house, don’t read the dessert menu or walk past the dessert tray, and gave away all my baking equipment. But at our anniversary dinner in a fancy restaurant, I had a decadent dessert and at the Lavender Festival I had lavender ice cream.

:flowerforyou: I know people who can have one bite of ice cream or a sliver of cake but that doesn’t work for me. Each of us has to find what works

Natalie, all I can say is are a trooper to have even been able to post here today.:flowerforyou: ..I was out of it for a couple of days after my surgery. The next few days will be hard, be sure to take your meds, don't try to be brave and go without them, you need them just to be able to rest and get the sleep you need.

Had a doctor's appointment today...everything is good, she wants me to have some regular bloodwork done and a mammogram and a bone density test since I have never had one and I will be 70 next year. The mammogram is scheduled for next Monday in Tulsa so will get to do a little shopping too, the summer clothes are all going on sale and I can use a few more new tops...I usually avoid sleeveless because of my arms, you all know what I mean....LOL, but knowing how humid and hot it will be in Tahiti and Samoa :glasses: I am thinking of buying a couple along with a cami with a shelf bra that I can wear too.

Tomorrow is our 51st wedding anniversary    and I cannot believe that a year has passed already since our wonderful family get together in Maui last year...I swear the time is passing scary fast any more.

I actually told my doctor about MFP today...she is an older woman and struggling with weight like the rest of us...I also imagine she gets little to no exercise, she loved the concept that you could track your food nutrients so easily.

Ok, time for Big Brother almost and I have to cut up a cantalope for our snack later.:drinker:

    Bye....xoSissy

 Natalie, I am glad to know that you are in recovery. As stated above, don't push yourself. Allow for recovery.

 Sissy, congratulations on your 51st anniversary. That is an accomplishment. I don't hear of many long marriage anymore. My husband and I recently celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary.

 Barbie, after reading some of your post, I read the Thin Commandments and Thin Taste Better. I know that I cannot have just a small piece of cake. I will return for more. My mother has always had excellent portion control. I've never known her to be overweight or concerned about it. For example, yesterday we had lunch from Potbelly's. She ate 1/2 of her sandwich, 1/2 of a piece of pie she had at home and she drank a couple of swallows of pop. I've never seen her finish all the food on her plate. She eats what she wants, but she does not over eat. She tried to teach the same to me. That's a lesson I did not learn well.

:glasses: I am trying to avoid temptations sitting in my kitchen. My husband baked a cake and some cookies. I did have a cookie, but have avoided the cake. However, I did eat some of his Kettle Chips. I said "his" because I won't buy a big bag for the house. When I really want chips, I will purchase the small bag. With a big bag, I usually lose control. For me it is not one day at a time, it is one bite at a time.

    Hi Ladies:

    Happy Friday to you all.

Natalie - I am amazed to hear from you so soon. Take care of yourself and I hope you are well. Hugs to you:flowerforyou:

I was reading some of the other posts and you know, it is the truth for me too, I cannot seem to discipline myself to eat certain things either so I just have to not buy them. My DH does not eat sweets at all, he just does not have a sweet tooth at all, so fortunately for me, I have no need to buy any sweets in the house then, unless the grandkids are coming. What I am trying to do now, is when they come, I buy things they might like and which I don't like and then I send the stuff home with them when they leave. I will see if that helps!!

I am still not losing. I am always under my calorie count, without the exercise added but I do not seem to lose. I think exercise is the key for me, I need to exercise more. My DH and I are going to join the "Y" and I will see if that helps me. Heaven knows, something sure has to give:laugh:

Lorri, you mention about your Mom being such a good example, that is excellent. I was heavy all of my adult life until just a few years ago when I lost over 65 lbs. Two of my sons (I have 3 sons but 1 is in the armed forces so he has to be fit) are fighting weight problems too and I feel guilty about that because I feel I did not give them a good start because of my own bad eating habits. One more thing for Mom to feel quilty about, right?? When I read about your Mom being a good example, I thought parents don't realize sometimes what they are doing and I see that with my grandchildren now too.

Sometimes, I really think we parents should come with a manual or something, don't you think??

Well, I hope you all have good plans for the weekend? We have a big Greek street festival going on here in Toronto, so I think we might go to that, if the rain holds off.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and a great weekend but I will probably be checking in anyway.

    Love, Cathy xx

I'm having a problem with fruit.

I love fruit but I recently decreased my daily calorie allowance, realised that many of my calories came from fruit & so have been avoiding it. This week I have eaten 2 apples & thats it. I'm eating plenty of veggies but sometimes I just crave some fruit.

We're encouraged to eat our 5 or even 7 a day but by avoiding the fruit & therefore the calories, I feel something is missing & I'm concerned that I'll then eat something a lot less healthy.

Is there an answer? There's only so much water I can drink to compensate :drinker:

Discussion about eliminating some foods is interesting. I have had it work well and I've also had it blow up in my face over the years of dieting. I think you really have to think about what is going on for you at the time. I do find it easier to not have some things around. The hard part is that sometimes that trigger food can change and feeling deprived can lead to a bigger problem. After each very restrictive diet I have done over the years, I usually found that I had a very strong craving for certain things. For example, at 25 I lost a lot of weight using a terrible diet from a magazine and after that I was really into sweets and candy (something that I really didn't care about before). At 34 I did Optifast and after that, I really had a thing for ice cream. So deprivation can cause its own issues. Now I am trying a more balanced approach but when I think I am overdoing it with somethink (like peanut butter, or garcia chips) by having them very often, I usually stop that item for a while and there are times it feels better just not to have it.

I went shopping today with my husband. I found a pair of slacks and a pair of capris that were a great price and the best part they were 4 sizes smaller than my old clothes. I have really gotten used to the baggy clothes but it was getting ridiculous. It felt great and going to the gym this afternoon was a lot easier.

Glad to hear that Natalie is finished with the surgery!

Natalie - so glad to hear the surgery is over and you're on your way to recovery! I was thinking of you all day yesterday.

Had my physical yesterday. For the first time, the MD wanted to do an EKG. I was astounded because he never did one before. When I asked him about it, I heard those horrible words "well, at your age I like to do this as part of the routine physical". But he did say that I have a low heartrate, which I already knew. It does seem that I'm having trouble with venous pooling of the blood in my ankles. I don't want to go on any diuretic, so he recommended a (oh my g**) support stocking. Vince has problems because he had a blood clot so he told me that I need to get fitted for the support stocking. Didn't know that. It seems I have a plantar wart so I'm going back on the 18th and he'll use the liquid nitrogen and cut it down (I don't think he's cutting it out). Seems the liquid nitrogen makes it so that the body will attack and kill off the wart.

Already did 1 hr on the bosu. Looks like I'll need to leave here in about 15 minutes for my boob squeeze, then bowling with that guy, then I'll stop at WalMart (on the way home), then stop at the Y so that I can log in my exercise to get my flash light, then Food Lion to get things that are on sale (as long as it isn't raining). Tomorrow I'll go to yoga

Just enrolled in these fitness classes on Sunday. I need 12 CEC's to keep my YMCA certification. I'm not sure if I will teach again or not, that really wasn't what I truly enjoyed. I enjoyed working one-on-one with the members. I'm going to take these classes just in case I decide to teach.

    Sissy - happy, happy anniversary!

Lorri - a few years ago a friend of mine from college had business in Philly and since we at the time lived right outside of Philly met up. We realized that out of all our friends from college, we two are the only ones who are still married to the same person. Most of our friends are either on their second, third, or fourth marriage.

I just can't seem to leave food on my plate. I will protion things out before I eat it when I'm at home, but when I'm out there is just something inside of me that can't seem to leave food on my plate. I suspect the "clean your plate" mentality was really ingrained in me. Yea, probably, since I was raised by my grandparents who lived during the depression.

Sally - I never really realized how cravings can change, but you are so right. Like before I made these chocolate cookies for Vince and I really didn't have any desire for them. Just now I made some and I can't wait for them to be gone from the house. Funny how cravings change, isn't it? Congrats on getting pants four sizes smaller! Boy, those pants you were wearing must have been really baggy!

Well, it's getting late, better hit the sack. Hope everyone has a great evening.

    Michele
