My best friend's mom made a fruitcake one year when we were about 14ish. She was the best cook in the universe & I still wouldn't touch that thing with a 10' pole. It just LOOKS wrong.

Especially at the holidays when you have to deal with people you don't normally have to like spouses' work parties. The only thing that got me through that was a couple rum & cokes...but now that I know better, I will just tell them I was wassling. LOL
