Fit for Fall - Calling all JM Fanatics!

Summer is winding down and the bathing suits, shorts and tank tops are going back in the drawers... Between the more forgiving clothes of the fall, the halloween candy, the sheer urge to start baking cookies and that one day that we have solely dedicated to stuffing our faces... Fall has it's challenges for staying fit. So now more than ever I need the support of a group to keep me focused on maintaining and continuing to tone my body.

Who: I think that group's are most successful when those that join have similar interests and since I'm the one starting the group I'm going to go ahead and base that off of my interests :-) So I'd like to start a group of other Jillian Michael's fanatics. We can support each other if we decide to do the 30 day shred or if we just bounce between her videos at will (which is what I've always done although I really would like to complete the 30 day shred one of these days...)

What: I don't really have weight loss goals anymore (maybe another 5 lbs but I'm pretty much in maintenance) but I'd be more than happy to have others track their weight loss and goals! My focus will be on exercise goals and keeping my food diary out of the red! In general, the purpose of the group will be to support each other in staying focused and dedicated to our healthy lifestyles!

When: As often as you feel inclined but at least once a week checking in with the group.

How: I will post a new thread each week on Sunday. Every week there will be a fitness challenge for the week and a thought topic for everyone to discuss.

So to get started and join the group please copy paste the below and fill in your responses! If you don't want to answer any of the questions just leave it blank..

Week of 9/4 Discussion Topic: What do you think is going to tempt you the most this fall? How do you plan to deal with it?
Without a doubt it's going to be the halloween candy. Last year I did fairly well with it but I was also just starting and super motivated because I was getting married in June. Now that the wedding is over, I'm afraid I'm going to allow myself more than I should. I freaking love chocolate, what can I say! My plan is to just wait until the day before halloween to buy it. Also, instead of opening all of the candy and pouring it into a bowl I'm going to just open one bag at a time and give it out as the kids come. When I run out I'll open the next bag. Then whatever unopened bags I have left over, I will RETURN!

I think it much more tempting to eat more and "hibernate" as the weather gets colder.... and with all the holidays and yummy foods at fairs and family get-togethers. I plan to eat the foods, but in moderation. Also, cook a healthy vegetarian option for Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner.

What is your favorite JM Workout (be specific if the video has more than one level!): I have done a little of the Biggest Loser "game" on the Xbox Kinect, and just received 30DS in the mail. I plan to start Monday, and am hoping it continues what I started with the workout game.

What do you hope to get out of this group: Accountability.... Accounting to myself isn't getting me to where I want to be lol....

Anything else you want to share?!: I am still a nursing mother, so I have to watch my calories in order to make sure I eat enough for the both of us!

Week of 9/4 Fitness Challenge: Don't use any elevators! - This doesn't really apply to me, as the only elevators we have locally are at the hospital LOL, so I will have to think of something different. I do plan to start walking a few mornings a week with my aunt, as well as start 30DS this coming week, so I think that will likely be pretty painful....

Week of 9/4 Discussion Topic: What do you think is going to tempt you the most this fall? How do you plan to deal with it? Definitely pumpkin pie... a very large part of my pregnancy weight this last time had to do with the fact that I was VERY pregnant during pumpkin pie season (he was born Thanksgiving Day actually =)) I think that I will only be buying one this year and will buy it only for Thanksgiving Day.

Week of 9/4 Fitness Challenge: I don't have stairs at my job. However, I do have them at my apartment. So, for this week, whenever I walk down or up the flight of stairs to my apartment, I will do one extra set. So when I leave in the mornings for work, I will head down, then head back up and come back down before heading out the door.

Week of 9/4 Discussion Topic: What do you think is going to tempt you the most this fall? How do you plan to deal with it?
Being able to throw on jeans and a hoodie and not being so exposed in my clothes. Feeling comfy usually equals weight gain because you don't notice the little extra bulges in your clothing anymore. Also, being inside in the fall and making slow cooker meals is something I love, so portion control will remain important. :)

Hey Everyone! Thanks for joining! I'm super excited to have a group to be accountable to again.. I've been seriously slacking lately. So like I said, my goals are going to be more fitness driven each week and I am the type of person who does much better if I lay out my plan for everyone to see because then I feel obligated to keep it. So here are my fitness goals for this week:

    1. Go for a bike ride! We have so many great trails around here and yet I never do it!

    2. Try Jillian Michael's Yoga Meltdown for the first time

    3. 30 Day Shred - Level 2

    4. Ripped in 30 - Level 1

    5. Burn Fat Boost Metabolism

Realistically I know I need a couple of days off so I'm going to leave it at that. I'll report back at the end of the week on how I did!

so I can't say that I will always have so much time to address everyone's posts bbuutt the husband is in bed and I'm enjoying my morning coffee so here goes:

@ Jennie – I definitely agree with the need to hibernate feeling. It’s like I just want a cup of hot cocoa, some cookies, a blanket and a movie every night! Have you done a vegetarian option for Thanksgiving before? This made me think of the turkey my husband and I cooked last year… It was covered in maple syrup and bacon. Needless to say we will NOT be making that one again.. lol

@ Melissa – I love the quote. I find that I quote JM quite a bit actually. I like how blunt she always is! How long have you been gluten intolerant? I feel like more and more people are becoming gluten intolerant lately. I heard that while most people think it makes it easy to be healthy because you can’t have any bread or wheat, it is actually really difficult because the substitute for making food taste good is more fat. Is that right?

@ Lesley – I do the 3 day quit allllll the time. I really want to actually do the 30 days eventually but my problem is I get bored with it. I actually had way more success doing the 30 Day Slimdown which is a mixture of three of her videos (30 Day Shred, No More Trouble Zones and Burn Fat Boost Metabolism). I’m considering doing the slimdown again soon. If I do, you could do the 30 Day Shred at the same time and we can yell at each other to stick with it ☺

@ Brenda – Your baby is A-DOR-ABLE. I have a kinect too but haven’t gotten the JM workout game. I really don’t play it as much as I’d like to. I got the fitness game for it but the workouts weren’t intense enough (too many breaks between each exercise) so it’s kind of gone unplayed. I like the dance game but I stink at dancing so I get frustrated quickly. And I love pumpkin pie too ☺

@ Laura – I saw your one year birthday on MFP the other day. Did it tell you it had been one year or did you just remember the date? I remember my date but that’s just because I joined the day before my older brother’s birthday and the logging on day two did NOT look good.. lol. My husband wishes I liked to fish but unless it’s a nice day and I can be getting a tan at the same time I really have no interest in it. Are you doing boat fishing or like side of the lake fishing? There is a new country song out called “Just Fishin’” that I almost used for my father-daughter dance but my mom freaked out on me for trying to change the song a week before the wedding.

Week of 9/4 Discussion Topic: What do you think is going to tempt you the most this fall? How do you plan to deal with it?

I think just pure laziness will tempt me! haha. although I'm trying to hold on to my youth and my waistline! There are a few things that will be tempting me this fall.
1- football season- this means our annual chili cook off, hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, BEER. my husbands watched EVERY team! please pray for me =)
    2. weather- I tend to stay inside more when it gets colder. I love sitting on the couch under a blanket and watching a good movie.
    3. fall food- in addition to the halloween candy.... there is all the good hearty food to keep you warm- chili, stew, soups. oh and my favorite******* wait for it******** Carmel apples with nuts!
    4. lack of motivation- I just got married and I had that great motivation to look beautiful in my dress and to look awesome on my honeymoon. now it just seems that MRS sounds so much older than MISS. now it seems you get married and have kids and then loose "me time" and get fat. oh GOD! I hope that doesn't happen. I am really losing the motivation!

I will try my hardest with the help, support and encouragement from my MFP family! I do have this little skinny ***** angel in the back of my head that does remind me how far I've come and not to ever go back there. I will also avoid temptation by looking at my fat pics that are so hard for me to look at and by looking at my wedding pics and know how hard I worked for that.
In addition to this I will:
    1) weigh myself everyday
    2. not beat myself up if i do have a bad day
    3. try to stay active in the fall and winter months
not by lifting a beer to my mouth either =)
    4. just rember how good it felt when i walked down the aisle my my husband-to-be greeted me with a huge smile and said " babe you look ****ing amazing!" ( he has such a way with words)
    5. continue to log!
    6. rember that summer 2012 is only 290 days away! that give me plenty of time to lose the honeymoon weight and get a skimpy bikini next summer!

    Good luck every one!

Thanks! I think so too lol!! I love the Biggest Loser game, but I figured I needed to take a break after finishing the eight week routine that I did for two reasons: 1) I was kind of getting burnt out on it and 2) School and soccer were starting up within a few weeks for my kids, and I have this OCD issue with not just completing what I start but doing it to the best of my ability, which means I would have probably killed myself trying to keep up. Another month and soccer season will be over LOL, then maybe I will try for the twelve week routine achievement ;) With the Zumba, I love it, but have discovered that I am a hazard to myself when it comes to dancing LOL!

Work related stress this time of year really triggers my emotional eating especially chocolate and carbs! I am going to do one JM workout at least 5x per week on top of the running I have to do bc of work. I think I have over 10 of her DVDs so fingers crossed I won't get bored and I can keep the stress down.

Just started week 3 of ripped in 30 today. I was glad to escape week 2 but ooowwiiieeee! Anyone else do thus one? The Duck walk? Omg my legs were going to die! I am really liking ripped in 30, I live 30 day shred but I have it memorized, this is my favorite system (3-2-1) but fresh! Definitely one for all JM lovers to own. Jillian started me on this path to fitness so I love coming back to her. How is everyone else?

Ripped in 30 is deffinnitely a step up from 30 day shred. I am usually crying in pain while I do it... Granted I was grunting like crazy during 30 DS Level 2 tonight. I force myself to use 5 lb weights instead of 3 lb weights because I like having my cute little biceps :-) but dear lord does it hurt. maybe one day i'll move up to my 8 lb weights (hahahha.. riggghhtt).

Definitely love the 3-2-1 system! So effective! And JM was the one who got me where I am today as well and any time I stray from her for other fitness DVD's I'm disappointed... there's not much than can compare to her workouts!

And how did everyone else do on labor day? I'm staring at a nice 600 calorie overage... oops! Good thing I didn't make any nutrition goals this week! Had our neighbors over for a BBQ for the first time. Was lots of fun and glad we have such great neighbors! They have a 2 year old boy who is adorable! Now if only he didn't insist on making break and bake cookies on top of the brownies! Haha!

I did good! our Labor day plans got cancelled due to the rain. NUT I got a lot of house painting done. UG! Calories burned though. My husband made homemade chili with all the peppers from our garden. It was his first chili of the season!! yum!

This weekend was a rough one for me, had a great time fighting with my significant other >_< Luckily the older kids were gone lol. So, no exercise and not a lot of eating either, which is not good because I nurse. We finally settled the issue though and everything is back on track, yay! Hopefully the rest of the week is smooth sailing!!

@ Silversong - Hope the rest of your week has turned out well so far!

I've been doing tterribbllee these last few days. I can't stop eating CRAP food! I don't know why but I just CRAVE anything and EVERYTHING. And I'm exhausted. So I'm going to bed super early tonight. I think it's because it's just about that time of the month and I've been really super busy at work. I have off on Friday so I plan to have a really good day and get some great exercise in.

I took the stairs once so far this week but I took the elevator three times... my new shoes hurt my feet more than I expected and going down five flights of stairs carrying my laptop and purse just wasn't going to happen.

This weather is terrible too! It's like labor day happened in POOF... summer is GONE! It's been raining non-stop and cold!

And yes I realize I just listed a lot of excuses... I'm going to put my cranky whiney butt to bed.

Bump! Where did everyone go? I need someone to whine to about ripped in 30!

Anyone getting killer buns and thighs? There is a challenge starting up. Jennifer, I love/hate BFBM. It still kicks my butt every time. My goal today is to do ripped in 30 now and then BFBM just before going to work at 6. I bought a lot of fruits and veggies and kelp noodles (extremely low calorie noodles I highly recommend), so I am ready to get it!

I am currently doing JIllian's 30 day slimdown which consists of 30ds, nmtz and bfbm. I have 9 more days left and I'm done :D not a ton of weight is coming off so unfortunately I think I need a change up from Jillian even thought I should be getting her Killer Buns and Thighs dvd soon :( I think my body is too use to it and I need something different which will be hard to do but necessary. But all in all I have burned over 3,000 calories this week and I am not done. I finished my 2nd round of Ripped in 30 before doing this routine and not much results there either.

Jillian's stuff is about maintaining and sometimes building muscle. Don't be afraid to up your weights, follow the hardest modification, etc. When you're not getting weight loss it is 99% diet, however. Make sure your calories are appropriate and accurately tallied, your calorie burns are accurate, and consider your ingestion of processed food.

For a change, maybe try a nice beach body program like turbo fire, insanity, or chalene extreme. There is also the female body breakthrough for muscle toning. It was a great program but I build muscle too easily and it was therefore too much stimulation for me. You have to play with your body and figure out what it likes and responds to, but again diet is tantamount.

Thanks :) Yea I figured after I was done with this program I would start P90x, cause I already have it and never did it consistently. I thought it couldn't hurt to give it an honest go for 30 days to see if it helps. I can't afford to buy anything else so I have to work with what I got :) And unfortunately I believe it is my diet killing my results, that is still a work in progress. It is leaps and bounds better than it use to be but still needs vast improvements.

Hey everyone! So since we haven't had too much activity on this thread I'm just going to continue Week 2 on here. I will make a new thread when it seems necessary, but until then we'll just stick with this one... So week 2 here we go!!

    Fit for Fall - Week 2 - 9/11-9/17

Copy and paste the following into your reply:

    1. Overall how do you feel about your progress last week?
    2. How did you do with the fitness challenge (no elevators) or if you had your own modified challenge how did you do with it?
    3. What is your biggest fitness/health regret of last week? What are you going to do this week to make sure it doesn't happen again?
    4. What was your biggest fitness/health accomplishment of last week?
    5. What was a non-fitness/health related high of last week? (Just something awesome that happened)
    6. Tell us something interesting about yourself!

    1. Overall how do you feel about your progress last week? TERRIBLE. Blah. I had such a bad week. I'm so disappointed in myself. I started this thread BECAUSE i know that I am having some issues lately with actually following through on my workouts. Last week was so bad. This week WILL be better.

    2. How did you do with the fitness challenge (no elevators) or if you had your own modified challenge how did you do with it? Again. not well. I made myself take the stairs only once out of the six times I SHOULD have. I blame it on the fact that I got new heels and they were killing me. I mean I was honestly almost in tears when I got home on Thursday. Gosh what we do to look good... I think I am going to go get some of those heel cushions. Anyway I recognize that this is just a terrible excuse. And excuses get me no where.

    3. What is your biggest fitness/health regret of last week? What are you going to do this week to make sure it doesn't happen again? Skipping out on workout after workout. I kept on telling myself, oh I'll do it later and then I would just be "too tired" or "not in the mood." I also ate pretty terribly. I just wanted to eat anything and everything in sight. My period started today which I'm pretty happy about it because it means the uncontrollable cravings should subside. So this week I am not going to allow myself excuses. I am going to do my workout FIRST thing when I get home from workout. No matter what! I will eat dinner only AFTER I finish my workout. This is how I did it when I lost the 35 lbs so there is no reason why I shouldn't continue doing it now that I am in maintenance mode.

    4. What was your biggest fitness/health accomplishment of last week? We went to Famous Dave's for dinner on Friday with my family. I HATE that restaurant. So I ordered a water and a garden salad with fat free italian. I had a few bites of my husbands meat and a few from my little brother's plate but I totally passed on the fried onion appetizer and the rest of the terrible stuff on the table. Usually I would have ordered a meal just because everyone gets all worked up if I don't, but I just did NOT want any of that food. It wasn't worth the money or the calories and I actually enjoyed my salad.

    5. What was a non-fitness/health related high of last week? (Just something awesome that happened) My husband and I went on a mini-vacation to Ocean City. Obviously not good for health/fitness since it meant fruity drinks and caramel popcorn but it was a good get away.

    6. Tell us something interesting about yourself! I love to snowboard! My husband and I have been looking at places to go this year. We want to go somewhere out of our normal vicinity this year. Canada is a possibility but most likely it will just be somewhere up north a bit.

Week of 9/11 Discussion Topic: What inspired you to change your life and join MFP to become healthier? I joined MFP in October 2010 because I was 9 months away from my WEDDING and I didn't want to be a fat bride. It was insane motivation and I now have beautiful wedding and honeymoon pictures that I know I will never regret because I looked awesome! I'm going to continue with MFP even though I've hit my goal because I know it is a daily commitment and I am not to the point yet that I think I can do this on my own. I never want to go back to where I was before MFP. I love being skinny and I know that my confidence in myself makes me more beautiful to my husband. I know he will love me whether skinny or fat (because he did!) but for both me and him (and our future children) I want to stay fit, healthy and happy!

    1. Overall how do you feel about your progress last week? I did okay. Eating was back and forth and exercise was not as much as I could have done. Considering the way that my week went though, I think I did okay.

    2. How did you do with the fitness challenge (no elevators) or if you had your own modified challenge how did you do with it? I did lap the park a few times 2 different days with my aunt, before she injured her foot, so that has been temporarily put on hold. I also took a group of kids hiking for a little over an hour, while carrying my infant, so got a good one in there. I just completed day 2 of the 30DS, so even though my proposed start date was postponed, I did follow through and start!

    3. What is your biggest fitness/health regret of last week? What are you going to do this week to make sure it doesn't happen again? Letting my procrastination get the best of me... this applies not only to exercise but work priorities and school assignments. This week I have got to keep up better, regardless of what life throws at me!!

    4. What was your biggest fitness/health accomplishment of last week? I did start 30DS even though I was super tempted to leave it off until the next Monday.

    5. What was a non-fitness/health related high of last week? (Just something awesome that happened) Got to go out on our first solo date since before the baby was born. I had really forgotten how much I enjoy pool, although I suck even more at it after not playing for so long!!

    6. Tell us something interesting about yourself! I am a gamer geek. I like to RP in games like DnD and World of Darkness, I play WoW, and I can hold my own quite well when it comes to Magic.

Week of 9/11 Discussion Topic: What inspired you to change your life and join MFP to become healthier? I joined MFP in May of 2011 because I had finally had the painful realization that I was not doing myself any favors, and that if I wanted to like myself again I had to be the one to change that. My friend IRL recommended this site to me when I mentioned that I was worried about affecting my milk supply while nursing, so I joined up to track and make sure I was eating enough. I hated the fact that I couldn't play with my kids without getting winded, despised having to "move" my own flesh so I could shave, and was losing my desire to be intimate with my significant other, because I was slowly losing all my self confidence. Since joining I have changed a few of these and once again feel comfortable in my own skin! Still have a little ways to go, but I can't say how much I enjoy the changes I have already been seeing!!

    1. Overall how do you feel about your progress last week?

I did pretty well, all things considered. I was really depressed almost this whole week because of the m/c but exercised almost everyday and stuck with my diet except for a binge yesterday. I have fasted all day today to make up for it.

    2. How did you do with the fitness challenge (no elevators) or if you had your own modified challenge how did you do with it?

I did the stairs almost every time during the day unless I had a big load or it was late at night (hubby freaks if I do that)

    3. What is your biggest fitness/health regret of last week? What are you going to do this week to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Probably the binge, along with a few scattered gluten-free pastries. I will still allow myself treats that fit in my calories because I might need a little comfort but no more cheat days.

    4. What was your biggest fitness/health accomplishment of last week?

Pulling off the 24+ hour fast and completing almost daily workouts

    5. What was a non-fitness/health related high of last week? (Just something awesome that happened)

Nothing much, I finally got my narcotic script pads for my new job (was tired of asking colleagues for help)

    6. Tell us something interesting about yourself!

Um, I'm married to a Jamaican guy

I will probably stick with my intermittent squats and try to expand from there

Week of 9/11 Discussion Topic: What inspired you to change your life and join MFP to become healthier?

I started walking when I turned 30 cause I felt I should work on my cardiovascular fitness. At the time i thought my weight was just fine. I always loved the biggest loser, so when I saw Jillian's 30 day shred on sale in the bookstore I figured I'd just check it out. Wow! I lost a lot of weight and got much more toned, my husband, coworkers, everyone noticed! It felt so good I wanted to keep going. I got BFBM and NMTZ, and finally Beachbody programs (insanity, p90X, Brazilian butt lift, turbofire). Along the way I decided I wanted to see what I'd look like if I was skinny, and started counting calories on MFP to make it happen.

    1. Overall how do you feel about your progress last week?

Ummm.... what progress??? I was crabby and *****y, bloated and i eat whatever I wanted and didn't think twice about it. actuallys i did think atleast twice about it... but it still didn't stop me. I'M OUT OF CONTROL! hahaha

    2. How did you do with the fitness challenge (no elevators) or if you had your own modified challenge how did you do with it?

I am usually pretty good about taking the stairs. it is actually faster. So I will give myself 2 skinny thumbs up for this!

    3. What is your biggest fitness/health regret of last week? What are you going to do this week to make sure it doesn't happen again?

I just really need to gain my motivation back and not my weight! I gained 5 lbs bakc since the honeymoon which I know I wasn't the only one. I haven't been to the gym in a while and I haven't intentionally worked out in a while either. My sister is moving in with my husband and I to save some money... so we fixed up our attic bedrooms. This has been a project I have wanted to do for awhile... but with the wedding, we didn't have the money for it. So we FINALLY got that done. I did the majority of painting myself, I ripped up all the old carpeting. so I don't feel that bad about not "working out". I did for sure get a workout. my biggest regret is my diet. I was awful. I hate grocery shopping and when I run out of food I just eat crap! I need to stay on top of my grocery list and not let my sister moving in have any effect on my eating habits!

    4. What was your biggest fitness/health accomplishment of last week?

Painting and ripping up carpeting. It really is a good workout! Also we went tailgaiting yesterday- great tasting "bad for you" food, beer but we did have to walk really far! so that was a good thing!

    5. What was a non-fitness/health related high of last week? (Just something awesome that happened) I finished my attic! I was so nice to do a project that wasn't wedding related!

    6. Tell us something interesting about yourself! I have 2 dogs that my husband and I talk to like they are humans. We love them and sing to them with songs we make up about them. haha..

Week of 9/11 Discussion Topic: What inspired you to change your life and join MFP to become healthier?
After being skinny my entire life, I gained 40 lbs when I worked night shift. I felt awful. I had major period problems because of the weight. I felt fat, looked fat and was miserbale because nothing fit! I hated shopping. I couldn't believe I forward people are too "Oh u gained weight.. your face is getting chunky". I wanted to take control of the situation before I ended up on 20/20 " the world's largest woman"..... I just got engaged too and I wanted to get my old self back. I wanted to be a beautiful bride. I didn't want to hate looking at my wedding pictures because I was fat. I didn't want my fiance' to marry and fat chic. I didn't want to be unhealthy!

Oh.. not sure who mentioned the fall weather = loose, comfy clothing like sweats... but i didn't really think about the comfy fall clothing and now i am super paranoid about it. I am only going to buy formed fitted sweaters and shirts. I put sweat pants on yesterday and freaked out a little like "Oh no... its starting!" first it starts with the loose, extra comfy, extra big sweats... then comes the "Oh I can eat a quart of icecream no problem!"

I have to really try not to get too comfy this fall.
