Wow! I want in on those spin classes!
LOL, I'm a crazy man on the bike. Plus, our instructor is a fast little marathon runner and she likes to have her Starbucks coffee before class which makes her extremely hyper (lol). I realized I could double my calorie burn about two months ago by speeding up the pace through all of the intervals we do. But, this week was really out of the ordinary.
Do you use a HRM? No matter how hard I smash the classes I rarely go over 700. I can only go over 700 when I run (which I hate doing - low boredom threshold).

Hi Ingot81, I use a Garmin FR60 fitness watch with a chest strap HRM. As for my high calorie burn during classes, I believe it is due to my pace and form. I started going to spin classes around this time last year. My average burn was approx. 600-700 when I started, To make a long story short, my fitness level has improved and my legs have gotten stronger since I started. I believe I am burning the most calories when I am out of the saddle in position 2 and 3, where 2 is standing and 3 is standing leaning forward in simulated race position. When I'm spinning in those positions my knees are slightly bent and the pedal stroke is smooth and generally fast (depending on the interval I usually try to go at 80-90% effort). Most people in class shift their weight from side to side over the pedals. My weight is centered and my legs are doing all of the work of stabilizing my body and working the pedals at the same time so my upper body is relaxed and my lower body is doing all of the work. I think this practice causes me to engage the biggest muscles almost continuously throughout the class. When seated, I still try to maintain a higher cadence no matter what resistance level we are asked to go to. Last Tuesday I weighed 197.6 in the morning and later that evening after going to class my weight was 193.3. I re-hydrated and had dinner. The next morning my weight was back up to 197.0

Thank you so much. I always worry about my form. I feel I put a lot of pressure on my knees. I'm going to do some endurance cycles so I can improve my heart and lungs and hopefully I will become more efficient at burning calories (I use a Polar FT4). sorry I haven't been listing what I'm doing to burn the calories, but it's all a mixture of JM's NMTZ, 30DS, TF HIITs and walking/running my dogs.
I'll do better next month on keeping track of what i've done.
Sounds like I'd like spinning classes. Wish I liked lifting weights more, though.0 -
