Mickie17 - a while ago you mentioned fruit salad to teach fractions. I think I get the idea of it, but do you have specifics that worked really well? I wouldn't mind borrowing your ideas... my kids are nervous about fractions. Thanks!
You bet...we used paper plates and plastic knives, then they brought in 2-3 pieces of fruit each. I had them start off by cutting a pieces of fruit in half...then 1/4s, 1/8s, etc.....Then the next piece we cut into 1/3s 1/6s...OH, I almost forgot...this came after my quesadilla lesson. They made quesadilla in the classroom...I have 3 electric skillets, placed one tortilla down , sprinkled cheese, laid another tortilla on top...then cooked and keet at their desks until everyone was done. Then we would cut in 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, playing with our food a little to take away and re-add the pieces back...then of course, we ate!!!0 -
Id like to join as well! I am in my 5th year teaching 6th grade social studies.0

Thank you! Sounds like so much fun!! I can't wait to try it. I think I will have to pass on the quesadilla making since I don't have skillets, but I could borrow the idea with just about anything! Hmmm... now the only question is when will I have time??0 -

Ugh! Trying not to cry. I was just informaed today that our district is planning to go back 6 years for lay-off pink slips. That means I WILL get one, because I only trasferred to my current district 4 years ago. I was afraid this might happen. This, right after my husband got a pay cut last week.
Is anyone else going through this at their district? It' rampant here in California.
Trying to keep it together....Mickie0 -
I am so sorry to hear this! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Knock on wood, Palm Beach is not talking about teacher cuts, yet. How do the private schools look in your area? You could also consider alternative schools. I worked for two years at at Department of Juvenile Justice daytime facility. Man, that is where the rubber REALLY meets the road. It gave me some incredible experience though.
What do you teach? Is there anything in the private sector you could do? Maybe private tutoring?
Just some thoughts.0 -

I am so sorry to hear that!:frown: Our district is making cuts too but they are waiting to see how many retirees there will be. Then its the new teachers who go. Its so sad that it has to come to this.I'm in VA.
Hang in there! Maybe its one of those "door closing and window opening" moments. Best of luck!!!:flowerforyou:

I've been trying not to panic the last few weeks...but then that news came out today...it's like....OMGosh!!! I'd ask, "what's next?" but I'm afraid of jinxing myself! I just got back from walking my dog and clearing my mind...and the rational part of me thinks, "Well, I have my family and my dogs...what more do I need?" But the reality & the emotional side is, I'm scared. My oldest son is starting college in two years...and I feel like after preaching to him his whole life about going to college, and pushing him to do well in school, that he's kept up his end of the bargain, and now we probably won't be able to help him. I truly feel like I may let him down...and that absolutely breaks my heart. He is such a hard worker and a truly good person. I put myself through school and I worked really hard to do it and pay all my living expenses, etc., and I swore that was the one thing I would help my children with, because it was so hard working 2 jobs and going to school full-time. I know that I'm not the only one who's gone through that...it was just a personal thing (goal) with myself, that I would find a way to help them through, because nobody was there to help me. Now he's talkng about working 2 or 3 jobs this summer to try to save money...the kid is 15, almost 16...and truth be told, he reminds me of me at his age. While I appreciate his work ethic, I want him to be a kid!!!! I grew up too fast, and I don't want that for him.
We are also victims of the real estate crisis. We bought a home almost two years ago, and put our other home on the market....we've NEVER had an issue selling one of our homes before. Well...like "they" say..."there's a first for everything." So we are stuck with that other home. Granted, we are fortunate to have some renters in it, and it helps offset a LITTLE bit of the mrogage payments....but now they are looking to buy a home...and NO, they don't want ours. Yes, I'm fearful of not only having to foreclose on that home, but this one too...that means my husband and I will lose everything we've built up in the past 18 years. Again, I totally know I'm not the only one going through stuff...there are so many other people out there way worse off than me...I just sort of feel like it just doesn't stop lately...whether it's disrespectful co-workers or worrying about keeping a roof over our heads....when does the madness end??? Do any of you ever feel like that?
:explode: UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sooooo sorry...I'm totally venting...and I REALLY want to EAT, EAT, EAT, and crack open a bottle of wine and down it!0 -

Just some thoughts.
I actually do that, I have a side business...and I even teach swim lessons all summer to try to make ends meet. Than you for the suggestions...I'm open to any and ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! (As long as they are legal)!!! :laugh:0 -
Better to vent than to binge and have even more regrets.
I can sympathize with the college part. My oldest son has lost over half of his college fund with the stock market bottoming out and he is a junior.
Florida has a Bright Futures scholarship that pays for most or all of college if your ACT and SAT scores and GPA are high enough. Does California have a program like that?0 -
Hang in there. As a former administrator, I can tell you that often districts have to go through the process & announce (freak everyone out) early, hoping to shake out anyone who might be ready to retire or run.
Then they see who they really have left.
So don't panic just yet. There's still hope.0 -

Nope, nothing like that. :frown: I know Georgia does something similar with the Hope Scholarship. I guess we just don't have any "Hope" of "Bright Futures" here in CA.
Of course, we'll have him apply for a million different scholarships...and cross our fingers! I am sooooo sorry to hear that your fund had been hit so hard too. It just STINKS! I guess the bright side is that they aren't going next year...so maybe there is hope??? I hope!Hang in there. If some old timers (like me) will go away, fewer 6 yr teachers will have to go.0

Ahhh man, that sucks Mickie....
And here I thought that there would always be jobs for teachers, nurses and soldiers!
Maybe it's time to rethink my retirement plan....
I've only taught for 3 years.... in a field that is typically the first to be cut from schools....
I am thinking I should be worrying more about this reality.... since obviously education isn't "safe."
:flowerforyou:
It's all I got... I am a teacher.

Hi everyone....yes it DOES suck. We had another big meeting after school today to be prepared for how we will be receiving our pink slips...certified mail. UGH! I just don't know what to think anymore. I really think our district is hiding a LOT of money in reserves...I just don't get the game they're playing. It's causing so much stress in so many people's lives. My plan is to try and hang in there, and not freak out too much, be strong & supportive for my fellow co-workers. But that's just my plan...reality is that I will probably freak out a lot, break down & cry and end up cracking open numerous bottles of wine with my coworkers. We're already planning a Pink Slip Party next Saturday...the day we get our slips by certified mail. Oh joy, oh fun, can't wait.:grumble:0 -

I sure hope that will be the case! Crossing my fingers and praying...a LOT!0 -
Ok, is it bad to wish for a snow day? :ohwell:
I live in VA and they are calling for snow Sun. -Mon. I could use a mental health day without taking a day off!! Am I a bad person for wishing for snow? (and praying)
Let it snow! let it snow! let it snow!0 -
I need to vent a little please -
Yesterday afternoon my classroom floor was a mess due to the grass being recently mowed & kids playing out on the field. They had tried to wipe their feet on the mat - it, too was covered in dry grass.
My principal walked by & asked what was going on to make such a mess...have the kids sweep it up...
I didn't snap, but boy I felt like it.
The kids swept it up, sort of, but I was so irritated by that comment. We have custodians. They're going to sweep anyway. It was only an hour before dismissal. I didn't really see the need to take time out of the day for sweeping.
Thanks for listening.0 -
Okay so this is my first time chiming in on this thread but I need to get something out.:grumble: I was sitting at my desk giving my HS Spanish 2 students a few minutes to review the info for their quiz. I eat a snack every day at 9-9:15, and usually on B-day I eat it during my 2nd period prep but lately I have had so much to do during prep I have been waiting til the beginning of 4th block to eat my snack. My morning snack is apple or blueberries with ff yogurt or cottage cheese and walnuts and uncooked rolled oats. Now I have had questions in the past about oh miss what is that or that looks good what is it? My students are generally supportive and nice. Well yesterday as I ate my snack and finished entereing a couple grades so they could see their current averages, one of the girls at the table closest to my desk says to her table mates-"Why is she always eating doesn't she know she's fat?"(okay so this girl has a 20.3F average in my class does nothing but sleep and look at herself in the mirror and eat chips and junk - she was eating hot fries at the time she made the comment, not exactly a rocket scientist!:grumble: ) No one agreed and only one girl said anything she said "You have room to talk you are always eating too." I know that the petty comments shouldn't bother me at my age and I just played off like I didn't hear her but it dug at me and hurt. I wonder when people's comments will stop making me hurt. I have worked for years on building myself up emotionally and it shouldn't take as little as a stupid twit's comments to bring me down but it does. Okay rant over!:blushing:0

You should have asked "Oh when did they add sweeping skills to the state proficiency tests?" LOL!:laugh:0 -

NO DOUBT!!!!!!!!!!!! Man...I can't stand it when my kids track stuff in, and actually at the end of the day, I make my kids clean the floor, out of respect to our custodians who (most of them) work so hard...BUT, there are times that they just can't help it!!!! Do you have a Leadership Team? Because that may be something to have them bring up at that next meeting...that this is an issue, and interferes with teaching time????? Just a suggestion...but boy, I'd be p.o.'d at that comment!!!! Hang in there---it was just an ignorant comment...maybe you could make a flippant comment back about it...like, "Better to have them tracking in the grass, than smoking it!" :laugh:0 -

Rude student comments...kids can just be buttheads, for lack of a better word (of course I can think of worse words to describe some of them). Keep in perspective that you need to consder the source...she probably is so messed up in the head it's pathetic, and YOU know what you are doing to be a healthy eater. Many of us are learning that we have to eat regularly to boost our metabolism...she's a clueless kid...so ignore her the best you can...or educate her on what you've learned as an adult, that you didn't know as a child regarding eating issues???
Maybe this will make you feel better...TRUE STORY ALERT:
When my boys were little (around 4 & 5 years old) I was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch one day. One of my sons said he only wanted jelly on his...and I replied, "No, you don't want to eat a lot of jelly, because that will give you a fat butt."
He remarked, "Wow, mom, you must've eaten a LOT of jelly!" UGH!!!!! Kids, gotta love'm or you'll strangle'm!!!! LOL:laugh:
Hang in there!0 -
Awww but it sounds so cute coming from the little one's who are just learning about what is appropriate to say and not say. I do not even like her so I am not sure why I let it bother me. Hmm maybe I'll move her to the other side of my room like by the door so she can get out the quickest :laugh:0

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:laugh:0 -
I had a student say in class that one of the girls looks like lumpy white potatos. Before I even thought about it I had told him that his obviously superior intellect (he has an F in EVERY class)apparently did not extend to censoring his mouth and he had really better think twice before I allowed him to become the target of his classmates. He said "HUH" which caused all the other students to laugh at him and tell him he'd better shut up (which he did).
I also had one student who was really bad about putting down other students in the class ALL the time. I had called home, sent her to the office, filled out the bullying paperwork, you name it, I did it.
Finally one day, I had enough of her and her mouth and gave the whole class five minutes of her being fair game, anything they wanted to say about her, no reprisals. After two minutes, she was in tears and we never had another problem with her mouth.
This was two years ago and when she sees me anywhere on campus she either comes and gives me a hug or calls out hello.0 -

True...they are probably just looking for attention...anyway they can get it!
We just started conference week today...but I finished mine for today, WHOO HOO!!! BUT, I have a lot of tough ones the next 3 days!0 -
Sounds like a great idea!! How long are your lunch breaks? I have barely enough time to eat my meal before I have to escort my students back to class.0
