Bring IT! Part II: Team No Excuses

Thanks for the article on fruit and bloating. It depresses me that they recommend eliminating some fruits from your diet if you have bloating, because I love fruit!!!! But I wonder if there's something they forgot to mention... that *at first* you can feel bloated and gassy after you change your diet/ lifestyle, but then once your body gets used to it, you are okay. So maybe a good recommendation is to gradually ease into eating more fruits. I went from eating maybe one piece of fruit a day to about 4 pieces of fruit a day... so I think my body was just like, woah, I'm not used to this!!! (Salad too for some reason.) But now it has settled down and I think it's adjusted. I *hope* that if I am ever foolish enough to go off of fruits and veggies and eat a lot of burgers or greasy foods or something, my body would react in the same way and show me that it's saying, "hey, what's up with this change?!"0

4 Diet Pitfalls—and How to Avoid Them
Thursday, February 05, 2009 | Nutrition, Tips |
By Shaun T, creator of Get Real with Shaun T™
Oh sure, everyone always says to me, "Shaun, I swear, I eat very healthily. I have a clean diet." But when people are experiencing "stubborn pounds" that won't budge off their bodies, I see uncertainty and fear in their eyes when I say, "I bet it's a common eating habit that is undermining your hard work."
Oh yeah. It's natural for us to be less than honest with ourselves about where we're cheating on our nutritional plans. We work out and have the best of intentions for our daily meals, but we end up falling short of our goals for having a balanced nutritional plan for various reasons. Some of the most common pitfalls can be avoided simply by being aware of them.
1. Stress eating. Hey, I readily admit that food is comforting—especially comfort food. You know, the mac and cheese; the meatloaf and buttery mashed potatoes; an entire pint of butter pecan ice cream . . . enough said. But there are so many better ways to beat stress than by eating yourself into a stupor.
Do this instead: My favorite thing to do is to get out and just take a walk. Focus on your body and forget the snacks, and get some air deep into your lungs, clear your head, feel your blood pumping, and stretch your legs out. It won't take but a few minutes for you to reap big benefits from taking a brisk walk . . . away from the vending machine. Or if it's raining, put on some great music and dance—that works too! You can get plenty of this done with Hip Hop Abs® or my Dance Party Series.
2. Grazing. Many people have a complete lack of structure to their daily meals—they actually never stop nibbling throughout the day—from bits of bagels and bites of donuts in the morning all the way through to chips in front of the TV for late-night channel surfing. Grazers have absolutely no set meal times, and end up shutting down their bodies' natural calorie-burning cycles through the constant onslaught of fat and calories.
Do this instead: Of course, avoid the bad stuff. Instead of vending-machine junk and food with a low nutritional value, pack healthy snacks for nibbling. And make time for balanced meals that will satisfy your appetite so you won't be reaching for whatever's near. See the action plan for #3.
3. Unconscious eating. Eating without paying attention to what you're doing, or without even realizing that you're consuming calories.
Do this instead: Keeping a food journal is the best way I know to determine whether you have unconscious-eating tendencies. One of my clients confessed that while keeping her journal, she would catch herself working at her desk and suddenly realize that she needed to jot down the cookie she'd just eaten at a coworker's desk. They'd offered her a homemade cookie, and she'd eaten it without even thinking about it—much less factoring it into her daily planned food intake. Cha-CHING! Those 200 sweet calories needed to be added to her daily tally in her food journal to get an accurate picture of what she was eating.
4. Double portions. It's not just restaurants that are offering us bigger portions to show us the value of their meals; it's loved ones and friends and ourselves who proudly serve up much more than our bodies need for fuel at mealtime—on a regular basis. It's because we think we're showing love, or are being shown love, through food. We'd also feel stingy if we were to serve the plate with less on it. The sad fact is that "normal" portions in the U.S. aren't just a fraction more food than needed for having a balanced meal—they're like double, which is in excess of what your body requires, and WAY more than you can burn through your daily workout!
Do this instead: Ask yourself, "Do 20 bites of a huge sandwich really taste that much better than 10?" How do those 10 extra bites taste when you know you can't burn them off that day and at least half that sandwich is going to turn into those "stubborn" pounds? Stick with sane portions; listen to your body.
Yes, these are four common pitfalls. They're all too common—but that doesn't make them any less devastating to our fitness results and our ultimate health goals (and don't forget that it can also be discouraging to the mental image you have of where you want to be). Be aware of where you might be defeating yourself, and take some time to form a personal plan to help you avoid these pitfalls on a daily basis.
Peace Out.

10 Tiny Changes for Big Weight Loss
Wednesday, February 04, 2009 | Nutrition, Tips | 0 comments »
By Chalene Johnson
Turbo Jam® trainer Chalene Johnson recommends taking baby steps to eat healthier. If you "slip," get immediately back on track. Never let a vacation or a special holiday be an excuse to overdo it the entire time. Go ahead, enjoy the occasional indulgence, but keep it reasonable. Here are 10 tiny changes you can make for big weight loss.
1. Wait 2 minutes. Cravings will disappear after two minutes if you walk away and turn your attention
elsewhere.
2. W.I.W.M. When you really crave something unhealthy, answer this question: "What do I Want More," that piece of chocolate cake, or a body I feel proud of? And on rare occasions, it's okay to pick the chocolate cake!
3. No one's perfect. Don't allow one bad choice to result in bingeing the rest of the day, or falling back into old habits.
4. Focus. Make eating purposeful, not something mindless to do while watching TV, driving, or sitting in front of the computer. Whenever you put food in your mouth, try to engage all of the senses in the pleasure of nourishing your body.
5. Don't skip breakfast. Start eating a filling breakfast, but one that's lower in fat. It will help you eat fewer total calories throughout the day.
6. Veggies. Most of your plate should have veggies and/or fruit on it at both lunch and dinner.
7. See what you eat. Eat your food off of a plate instead of straight out of a jar, bag, or box.
8. Don't buy it. Stop buying the food you snack on all day. Just eliminate the temptation.
9. Eat more fruit. A person who gets enough fruit in their diet doesn't have a raging sweet tooth.
10. Watch what you drink. Cut back on or cut out high-calorie drinks like soda, sweet tea, lemonade, and especially alcohol. People have lost weight by just making this one change.0 -

I like that article on ten methods to get slimmer... for me the two that seem to work best are "picture yourself thin" and "plan for the future." I remember when I was thinner in the past and how my body looked and I can't wait for it to look that way again. Only now I've been incorporating more strength training/ toning exercises than ever before and I must say that when I look in the mirror, I picture myself slimmer but with my same muscle definition and toning that I already really like. I don't mean to sound vain, it's just what helps me keep at it, because I can tell a big difference in my body's shape when I stay on board and when I fall off the wagon.
For planning for the future, I try to buy fruits, veggies, chicken and fish on the weekends so I have them with me at work all week long, even when I'm busy. I also tell myself, " don't be lazy." Like if I think of grabbing something out to eat on my way to work, or even if I think of grabbing an energy bar, I tell myself, "you have plenty of whole, nutritious food right here at home, don't be lazy and not make it." So I take an extra 10 minutes to make a salad to bring with me, or an extra, like, 5 minutes to cook some oatmeal, make an egg sandwich, or toast a piece of bread and add some turkey or tuna and some veggies to eat right there. I've been trying not to eat "on the go" because I've read that that can contribute to gas and bloating. That was a big habit of mine in the past! So even though it's so hard becaus I am really busy, I try my best to sit down and eat a nutritious meal (or mini-meal/ snack) slowly and with focus, instead of grabbing something without nutrition and mindlessly chewing on it in the car or whatever.
Good tips, thanks for the inspiration!!0 -

Thanks!!! A lot of them say kind of the same things but I *need* it drilled into my head until it becomes second nature. In many ways I feel it's already become or becoming second nature and that makes me feel proud of myself for changing my habits.

I have a Beachbody coach for P90X. If you sign up for their website, it's free. Many of the coaches keep their own personal blogs as well as coaching blogs that they post inspirational articles and motivational tips. You get a coach assigned, but I just emailed Emily and she coaches me sometimes. It's always nice to have someone there to give you a little push when you need it. Emily helped me figure out my nutrition. She's gone from 168 lbs to 114 in less than a year and she's looking great, so I do trust her.
There are also forums on Beachbody which are nice as well, but the tone and focus is quite different...pm me if you want more info...don't want MFP police coming for me....0 -
Also, I wanted to post this link for people who are concerned about fruits that are making them feel bloated.
Just FYI, I thought it might be an interesting read.
http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/gas-amp-bloating-from-fruit.html
Drink Herbal Giner tea or Pepperment tea. They both help with bloating too0 -
I'm not supposed to post my info in any posts (I don't want to violate any TOS here), but anyone can contact me (I'm a Team Beachbody coach myself, have been for a year & a half). Yes, the messageboards and other things are free at Team Beachbody! :bigsmile:0

This intrigues me. I had never heard for the P90X or Beachbody (are the same thing) plans. I guess I was clueless LOL. Is it all done on DVDs or at the gym or what? What do I need to do it (weights, fitness ball, cables, medicine ball, etc.??) How often would I be supposed to do it? And I guess an obvious question is, how much does it cost?0 -

P90X are Beachbody workouts, yes. P90X is an awesome home workout system, 12 DVD's, a nutrition guideline, and manual. You need weights or resistance bands and a way to do pullups. There are a variety of workouts from them also, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Abs, the latest ChaLean Extreme (which is what I am doing now and LOVE! ), Slim in 6, etc. I'm sure you have seen the infomercials. :bigsmile:0 -

Yeah, in case you haven't noticed, once you drink the Beachbody kool-aid  you just can't help but want to tell everyone about it. Probably why the coaching business has been so successful. Personally, I don't use the coach much, but I know Emily is always there if I need to ask her something.
Some people scoff at the price initially, but honestly I would pay at least 2x what I did for P90X. It's totally worth it,and I think it comes in at around 140 total. Might need to double check on that though. Check out the website, and keep in mind if you are interested, you MUST contact the coach first. That way you don't receive unwanted emails and things like that. Let us know what you think! I can't wait...
What I like about Beachbody is that they don't lie on their infomercials and tell you it's going to be easy. They emphasize that it's hard work, but you'll get results if you put in the effort. You'll find no P90X infomercials telling you that it only takes 3 minutes a day, 3 x per week, or that you can eat everything you want and sill lose weight. :noway:

Good Afternoon! Glad to hear you all are bringing it! This is my 3rd day that i will be doing my 30 min work out and i was wondering if you are suppose to alternate that with something else...I was thinking about lifting weights for my arms...does that sound okay?
I cant wait for March 11th, which is when i will weigh myself to see if my workouts are working! Just keep bringing it!:flowerforyou:0 -

I sent you a message! P90X is $120 + shipping, but well worth EVERY penny. It's a complete program that I have been using for the last almost 2 yrs now! (and my hubby finally joined me last March! ) Everyone that I know that has used it has had awesome results. And like Michelle said, it's not a gimmick or a fad. You have to use it and you have to work hard, but if you do... the sky's the limit! :bigsmile:0 -
Hey everyone-you know I love reading your thread, and on this subject I had to put my 2 cents in. It seems pretty high for the P90X system, but if you separate everything, it is actually very reasonable. I got mine for around 120.00, but if you think about it, that's really not bad for 12 separate workouts. If you have bought workout DVD's in the past, how many have you bought for 20+ dollars that only had one routine? And the results people get speak for themselves!:drinker:
Jess... You type way faster than me!!! You took the words right out of my mouth.0 -

Thanks. That is the price for the entire thing or once I start do I have to keep buying more stuff to progress? I guess that is a pretty good price. I actually have $180 sitting in my bank account that my parents gave me for Christmas because I wanted a briefcase and I hadn't found one yet. Well I still haven't found one and I was thinking, maybe I don't really need a new briefcase, and trying to think of what else I really needed to spend the money on. So maybe it's this! I am looking into it more before I spend the money. Can you do it with a friend together, and if so, do they have to pay too or could you split the cost? (Sorry if that's a stupid question.)
Honestly this is my only hang-up; I spend money every month for the gym and I go there pretty much every day; makes me feel like I'm getting my money's worth LOL. I also meet my good friend at the gym pretty much every day for our workout (currently Making the Cut), so what would she do if I couldn't work out with her anymore; I'm her work-out buddy LOL. The other workouts I do are outdoors -- running, skiing, hiking, etc. So do I really want to be in front of a TV? I guess YES if it will bring me just as good results as going to the gym. And I could still use the gym for my treadmill/ speed work/ hill work exercises.
How often is it? Is it like once a day for an hour? Or what?0 -

$120 is for the WHOLE program. The only thing additional you have to purchase would be the weights or bands and a way to do pullups (chinup bar or the bands with an attachment). Yes, you can work out with a friend, I work out with my hubby! And... once you get familiar with the moves, you can take the P90X guidelines or worksheets with you and use the weights at a gym. I have a friend that takes her laptop to the gym to use the weights with the DVD's!! Most of the workouts are an hour long, except for Ab ripper (16 min, you do it 3 x a week and it is one of the MOST effective ab workouts... EVER!), and YogaX which is 90 min. And I still run and fit in my other workouts. I have found the weight training to be the most effective part for me. I was never a *weight lifter* until about 3 yrs ago. I was a cardio queen! I had NO upper body strength or muscle. Now I can do pushups, pullups, and lift heavier weights than a lot of guys. (and thankfully I still don't look like a man! )
Anyway... feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Just did Tae Bo, and The Firm workout. I haven't been feeling well today. ( TOM) and I have endometreosis, so my cramps are BAD. =[ But I promised myself that I would workout today. I won't reach my goal by taking a break every chance I get. I actually feel better after working out, my cramps have stopped somewhat, so I'm grateful. I think I'm going to try to jog tonight after dinner as well if I can.
Everyone did great today. Keep up the good work!:bigsmile:0 -
WTG Sweetapple you can do it...I understand the cramps blah!! even if you do a very light job at least its something and your not going off track at all...good job!
Ha Michelle actually Im going to switch careers once the weight is off..I might try nursing...not sure yet my mind keeps wandering...:drinker:0 -
oof! i knew i was going to pick up the dress after the final fitting tonight so i made myself go for a long run/walk this morning and then wrapped up the afternoon with some pool weights and about 15 minutes of laps.
the bad news? my dress is still pretty darn tight!!!! i have been eating wicked healthily all week and am absolutely LOVING my workout time this vacation. and i really, really want to continue along this road once i get home (in four days).
i have NO excuses and LOTS of motivation. i can slim down and get leaner in 2 months, right? right. (i hope, i hope, i hope...)
good night and have a great weekend!0 -
