breastfeeding in public

I am pro Breastfeeding, I work on Maternity and we sell new moms apron like things so they can cover up while in public.. you should be able to sit on a bench in a mall and feed your baby YES but discreetly and have the baby and breast VERY hidden
You work on the maternity ward with itty bitty teensy weensy babies that don't care if they're covered. Older babies care not for blankets.
I prefer to throw blankets on the heads of people who feel the need to stare....
So true!!!! Older babies do NOT want to be covered while they are eating!! Love this: "I prefer to throw blankets on the heads of people who feel the need to stare.... "
Totally pro-breast feeding wherever and whenever hungry babies want o be fed. Except a bathroom stall. Why would anybody want to eat or be fed in a stall? Ugh.0 -
Mothers should be able to feed their babies in whatever way they deem best for those babies, wherever that needs to happen. I wasn't able to breastfeed my daughter, but if I had been, I would have fed her whenever and wherever she needed it, just like I did with her bottles. A baby's need to be nourished trumps an adults desire not to have to avert their eyes. Gimme a break.0
-
But why? Because some adults are turned on by them they shouldn't be used for their purpose? Breasts are solely designed for feeding babies. There are people out there with a foot fetish ...should be ban flip flops too?
I love this. :bigsmile:0 -

OP, you don't have to breastfeed, but please don't judge women who do.
I don't at all. I think it's a great thing! I just don't want to see it in public.
I just posted this to see the general consensus about the topic! I had a feeling I'd be in the minority (or the only one lol) but I like to educate myself on different topics and see different sides of the issue.0 -
I used to have some lady walk in to my office twice a day and close the door to pump. She never asked me if it was okay never bothered to say anything.
I felt like THAT was wrong. Whether it was to pump or dink around she shouldn't have been randomly coming in my office and closing the door unless it was to speak to me privately.
In all honesty I would refuse to do it in public myself, I wouldn't want everyone watching me!
Well, that's just bad manners to come into anyone's office without asking. But she probably has that all around and don't think it had to do with breastfeeding. It would annoy me if someone entered my personal workspace without asking. That is different than a public space.0 -
ahahaha, we're not prudes here. the employee offered the mom a dressing room and she flipped out and said the employee invaded her privacy.... um... ok. personally, so not to make myself or others feel uncomfortable, i always did it in a bathroom stall if i had a hungry baby and was out and about. (yes, my own babies...)

Making some low fat air-popped popcorn. I'll sit back and watch the anvils fly past.
it is definitely one of those topics!
the reason i posted this is because i'm against it in public. i understand it's natural and it's the best for your baby. i am a nursing student so i've been taught that over and over. i don't think it should be done in public however. it's not because it's sexual at all, it's just because it should be a private thing between you and your baby. i don't care to see you take your breast out in public and have your baby latch onto it. if i'm in your hospital room or your house, i have no problem with it. but i dislike seeing it in public. i also know i will not breastfeed my future children so that might also have something to do with it as well.
Bottle feeding, then, and for that matter-ALL eating in public should be kept in private, then, right? *rollseyes*
It is so ludicrous that people actually feel this way. A baby is hungry when a baby is hungry. Would people rather hear a baby screaming bloody murder because it isn't "an appropriate time" to feed when mom is out busy running errands? That, my friends, would be neglect...
The private thing for me is that it involves a personal part of a woman's anatomy. No, eating shouldn't be done in private, but when a baby is feeding from a woman's breast, it should be (in my opinion). But at the same time, if a mother is out in public and her baby cries, she should either prepare the baby a bottle or find a place to breastfeed. Both take time. It's not like bottles are just ready to be used either. It all takes time.
um ... maybe you just don't realize, but if a baby is breastfeeding, by definition, it isn't using a bottle.
Oh no I understand. What I meant was that whether a baby is breastfed for bottle-fed, they both take time to prepare (either by making a bottle or getting the baby to latch on, etc.)
a bottle takes time to prepare, breast feeding a second.... obviously a very new mother wont be feeding in public as she will be in hospital or home... then once she has the hang of it she will want to go out a socialise.... Breastfeeding is EASY once you have the hang of it.0 -

OMG. There is always some idiot comparing this nasty crap to breastfeeding.
Seriously?
When was the last time to took a dump to offer nutrition to your child?
Grow up.
They're boobs.
Every mammal on the planet has them.
You probably have no trouble drinking milk from the boobs of COWS.
You *SHOULD* have no trouble with a child getting optimal nutrition-no matter if it happens in public or private.
Perhaps YOU should go to the freaking nasty *kitten* bathroom to eat so that babies can eat in peace away from your annoying chewing.

Hilarious. But I have to be honest, I saw the sandwich first and thought, I wonder what kind that is..0 -
I don't get why people care either way. Don't look if you don't like it.0

I would have went to my local Target but I didn't have a car. It's okay to nurse in public. When my daughter was 5 months old she got hungry at Target so I pulled out my nursing shawl and started nursing and I kept getting looks from employees. I had one employee ask me to stop and I told them when she got done eating I would stop. lol0

i was such a bad mom that i did that to my kids as babies... gah, i was so in line for mom of the year back then, breastfeeding my babies in privacy, even if it happened to be in a stall...0 -
I don't know if i will ever have kids, but if I do, I will provide what is best for my baby. And I believe breast-feeding would be the way to go, something that has been done since the beginning of time. Unless you have a medical condition for which you cannot breast feed, I think it would be selfish not to provide your baby with what is best because you don't want your breasts to hurt....But to each is own, if you want to pump your baby with synthetics, that is your prerogative. I sure as hell know, that when my baby in hungry, she/he will be fed, no matter where I am. Yes, I will do it discretely, but I really don't give a damn what people will think about it. I am providing for my children, and if you don't like it, then don't look. It is that simple. You can't tell a mother what to do with her child. I am American, and I HATE our views on censorship...0

It's no more a "personal part" of a woman's anatomy than it is a man's except that society (and people with messed up heads-in my opinion) have made it such taboo. But ONLY when they're nursing babies. Have you seen the covers of magazines? There is MUCH more breast showing on most magazine covers than a person could even get a glimpse of if they STARED and tried to see a boob while watching a woman breastfeed.
<<yes, yes
<<yes, yes
<< yes, yes
<< no, no???
<< no, no???
Really... we live in a back a$$wards world.0 -
When I was nursing my daughter I was very discreet. I had a blanket that had a snap around the neck so it was easy to keep it in place without disturbing my daughter or just hanging out there. I DID want to feed my child the best way possible but i didn't want some random person staring at my breasts. While I was pregnant there was a woman who would walk through the store I worked at with her breast hanging out nursing her baby (and I worked in a motorcycle shop so lots of guys wandering around) and it was awkward for my coworkers (male and female) to interact with her. I would never want to not nurse my child but I can try to keep the other people around me in mind in the way that I do it.0
-
I really think this is a cultural issue... I've only seen people worried about it in the US. In many other countries women breastfeed at the table, on the bus, on a park bench, no problems. I can't say personally because I don't have kids, but I'm pretty sure I would prefer a crowded bus with wandering eyes to a bathroom stall.0

Exactly right.
In Mexico, it is very common in small towns for moms to breastfeed in public, but covered with an apron-like piece.
Babies love the cozy feeling, and no one complains or peeps. Many don't even notice there is a baby being breastfed.0 -

Same here. Americans are bass-ackwards about nudity. Weird.0 -
Ok one last post and I swear im leaving this topic alone. Had enough of it on babycenter. I will always try to be considerate of those around me. That's why I shower and brush my teeth daily. I don't have to but I do. However a womans right to bf in public is legally protected. Like it or not.
To those without children I think sometimes you underestimate the power of a mothers instinct. If my kid is hungry and I have the power to feed him there is nothing you can do or say to stop me. And if you try...gods help you!0 -

How rude of that person. Wow. I can't even....0 -
I nursed in public but I always covered up with a baby blanket or shawl and I would normally try to find a nice out of the way place to nurse it's all in the presentation:flowerforyou:0

yeah ... I'm fairly pro nudity.

"its perfectly natural"
"its beautiful"
"its best for the baby"
blah blah blah
I think the ones who choose to breastfeed publicly are crying for attention, and they are sure to get it.
Like most men, I enjoy the opportunity to see a breast every now and then, but this just doesn't seem like the right way to do it.
I'd prefer they take advantage of a private spot.
Just 'cause its natural doesn't mean you have to share it with the world.
Other natural things I prefer not to experience others doing in public:
urinating
passing gas
defacating
spitting
vomiting
coitus
sodomy
clipping toe nails or finger nails
clearing a nasal obstruction with a finger
flossing or using a toothpick
etc
OMG. There is always some idiot comparing this nasty crap to breastfeeding.
