$72 US a month, and that's after my employee discount. The pains of working out in Manhattan =(.

At least I have a work program that gives me $500 US a year towards gym memberships!
  • Planet Fitness...$10 a month with no contract, and the people that work at the one here are fabulous...love it!

I 'm fortune enough to have free access to the university gym, which is all I really need. But I know its almost 300 a year for non students. REALLY not looking forward to having to pay for a real gym membership someday but I'd LOVE to have access to a 24 hour gym. :)

i have free membership but it's supposed to be $50/mo
  • Well mine is free, because I work at the gym :P

But our memberships are non-contract month to month.
This includes access to everything in the gym.
If you want to cancel you may do so at anytime with no charges,
if you're on draft make sure to cancel at least one week before draft is scheduled.

    If you have a trainer it's $35.00 / month

    If you are doing just a month-to-month without a trainer it's: $45 / month

If you are doing a month-to-month draft its: $40 / month

Teens / teachers / firefighters/ police officers are $25 / month or $20 on draft
  • i pay 54$ a month for me and my husband at ANYTIME FITNESS so i can go at any hour of the day....BUT i had to sign an 18 month contract for it to be that low and that gym doesn't have a pool, sauna, or anything....just 2 bathrooms with a shower. I wouldn't recommend that gym at all. An indoor track sounds awesome but that is a bit pricey.....

Our family membership at the Y (two parents plus kids) is $83.00 per month. To boost membership, they have a few months a year (January, September) when they waive the joiner fee, which is usually about $90 per month. Membership includes two pools, unlimited fitness classes, weight/cardio room, free babysitting, kids "X-arcade" area for older kids, plus discounts on program classes and before/after care at school. Probably more perks, but can't think of them right now.

I'm a member of the YMCA. The cost is $73 a month for family (5 of us), discounted to $64 because my 1st grader utilizes the YMCA after-school program.

This includes the daycare (w/big indoor climbing apparatus), weight room, all group classes (zumba, kickboxing, etc.), olympic size pool, sauna, hot tub, gymnasium, locks/lockers, as well as outdoor 1/4 mile track, soccer field, outdoor playground/jungle gym, and a bodyweight training area.Special classes like dance, karate, or swimming cost a little extra ($3-5 a week).

$4 a month since I live in the city limits and it's the town rec department. It's small and old... I don't use it much at all because I have a treadmill at home, but hubby goes about 4 days a week to lift.
  • I teach fitness classes, so my memberships are free now. BUT ....before I taught it was the absolute BEST $$ I spent a month. I used to think about it like this.....if I can afford to go out to eat, I can afford a gym membership. Then when things got tough $$ wise, I would stop eating out/going to movies, but I would NOT stop spending on my gym membership. Just my 2 cents!

    $67.95/mo.
    no initiation fee
one year membership - was a bit cheaper per month for a longer committment (as in 2-5 years)

    American Family Fitness
    gx studio
    cycle studio
    mind/body studio
    basketball courts
    raquetball/volleball courts
    lap pool
    fitness pool
    kids pool
    hot tub
steam rooms in each locker room

endless selection of cardio & weight equipement (2 levels)

    LOVE IT!

(Plus for 6 months I was paying an additional $620/month for two trainers, four days a week -- ouch! - but it really helped me, and I wouldn't change it for anything. now I have one trainer only twice a month - extra $100/month)

**I also have a gym in my neighborhood that I frequent since I moved in with my boyfriend, but I keep my gym membership at AFF**

I pay $NZD68/month and for me it is completely worth it! I live in New Zealand and we have an awesome chain of gyms called les Mills. I adore the classes and I am quite happy to pay this much. This fee entitles me to general gym equipment (elliptical etc), group classes, shower/lockers/sauna etc. I have tried machines in the past but I find I get bored so the classes are the best option for me. I love BodyCombat which is all punching and kicking. I go 3 times per week so it costs roughly $5 per visit. It is also where I do my weigh ins!!!!

My gym also offers les mills classes -- haven't tried them but i hear they are great!!
  • 19.99 per month plus 10 a month for 1 1/2 hrs of babysitting! not bad at all! ;)

So I currently work for a gym and have worked for a few other gyms in the past. With gyms you get what you pay for. Prices vary on a few different things, the quality of gym, the location can have a large impact as well. If you are getting a gym membership in SF for example, you will easily pay twice as much as in a residential area.
If you are looking for a clean and sterile gym, this is another thing I would evaluate. There are some gyms that are based on the business model of Low Cost -- High Volume. The monthly cost is cheaper, but the gym is more crowded, because their strategy is sell as many memberships as you can, who cares if these people reach their goals. OR you can go for a Higher Cost -- Low Volume. These gyms usually have nicer facilities, are cleaner, have services such as towel service, friendly staff, and people that actually care about you reaching your goals.
I am very serious about my fitness and a seriously into female body building. If a gym is CLEAN, CONVENIENT, and has the EQUIPMENT I need, I will gladly pay $120 a month rather than to travel farther (making it less likely for me to workout) and increase the risk for some serious cooties and infections. EW!

Everyone's needs and priorities are different though. Lower price does not always equal better gym. Wherever you see you being most likely to reach your goals is where you should join. Not to mention, if the gym is a bit of a monetary commitment, you are more likely to go because you do not want to WASTE that money.

30 bucks a month, 24 hr gym. It was 45 but we did a couples package - my fiance and I - so instead of 90 (45 each) they drop it to 30 each.

$48/month at the local JCC - great facility with all the amenities, well-maintained, and never overly crowded.
