I'm not sure what the government is doing with the $4500 I'm paying them.

    No one does.

Depending on how much we get this year (since we always split it down the middle) I am going to use mine to pay off some more on my bills/debt. I should be debt free by next year :)

    Congrats on that goal!!!

Pay the car insurance, buy wood for next Winter and the rest goes into savings or toward bills. The same thing we do every year. We are so boring...lol

    REFUND?
No, I always end up paying, but that's because I do not allow anybody to collect taxes out of my earnings.
The Federal Gov is not owed a penny until April 15th.
Those of you paying into that are giving your money away and getting nothing in return - no interest - nothing.

    Folks, get a savings account!
And once you get a sizable amount, invest.

    It's the reason I am semi-retired before age 50.
Learn to think about money like rich folks, and guess what?

    You will build real wealth.
And you'll be able to afford all those little wants mentioned here while building net worth to fund a life of leisure and abundance as opposed to low pay work, want and lack.

    That.

We have the minimum withheld allowed without a penalty. We always owe extra come April 15th. I have no interest in loaning money to Uncle Sam, interest free.

Not always. 50% of the people that get a refund don't even pay any taxes.

I've never quite understood this at alllllll. But it does happen.
My husband's aunt gets back $3000 a year, has no kids, has no job, is not married.
    WTH?

For those who don't want to give the GOV money or ratjer pay over the course of the year instead of getting a big bill in april:

    http://www.irs.gov/individuals/page/0,,id=14806,00.html

The IRS calulator will help you determine the right amount of exemptions and deductions.

Basically it will tell you how many exemptions to claim and if you pay in most years you can just have the extra taken out over the course of the year instead of paying a lump some.

I was just informed that my tax return may have to go into some fees for my husbands new car.

I'm actually quite pissed....I had plans for that money. Grrrr.

Not getting a refund. I decided I don't want to give the Federal government an interest-free loan for 11 months every year, so I adjusted my withholding. I owe something like $7. Meanwhile, what *would* have been my tax refund has been sitting in my bank all year, earning interest for *ME* and not the government.

Another person who sees this scam for what it really is.
A hidden tax on the poor.
