I don't mind if I have established some sort of friendship with the person...

So, its ok if I call you darlin'....darlin?

Not many men in CA use "darlin". But if the right southern gentlemen were to call me that I would be ok with it!

I think if you call your friends something endearing - then that's what it is - a name. I honestly don't mean anything beyond showing friendship, kinda like if I could physically give one of my friends a hug - girl or guy. shmoopy

I only enjoy terms of endearement from friends. I will occasionally call MFPers "hun" but that's about it.

Between my friends it's "boo boo", "*kitten*", "hooker", "beeotch"...

The favorite amongst my girlfriends is hooker. lol

Yup, if you're my friend and I call you 'hooker' then it means I really love ya! lol

Yeah me and my friends call each other biioottch and slag, *kitten* etc... it's just part of the parcel and we're mostly guys, we even call the girls in our group by that name..they're just used to it! Shocks random people though, they think we're shouting slag at people in the street randomly and all turn to look for a girl hahha.

On the subject of those names though, only one girl I've ever seen has liked names and she just stuck with hun or machine lols :p I seem to get quite a few sex related nicknames and jokes lol..

  • I would but don't want to come off as creepy. Hard to tell how others might respond (scanning post for current friends). Maybe with time it's easier but currently try to be encouraging and build others self esteem without making things awkward.

No issues. I've always been a friendly sort and called people hon, honey, sweetie, etc since way back in school (20 years ago! yikes!).

I do it myself, more in my day to day interactions that online but I am guilty of it so I can't say that it really bothers me. :flowerforyou:

As long as it's not meant in a condescending or coddling kind of way, I like it. I have a friend who is ALWAYS "bebe" but I've known her for years elsewhere. *shrug*
Nicknames are fun and can be such a light-hearted thing. And it can really cheer people up and make them feel good about themselves too, if done right. Most people like to feel special and 'special names' can do that. :)
