LOVE*** Trying to focus on muscle mass right now, myself, and stuff like this makes it more appealing to stick with it!

Here's about three years ago when I got married, my starting point last July when I thought I looked like I did when I got married, and last December, only 17 pounds down:

Haven't lost a pound since October, but this is my back, and my abs are starting to show in front:

how heavy do you have to lift to see good results like this?

"heavy" means heavy for you. Doesn't matter how heavy for you compares with someone else. You just want to get to where you can do 6 to 8 reps of the exercise, but not much more. I feel happy when I fail at my last lift (safely, some exercises I don't risk failure because I don't want to risk injury). There were suggestions earlier of New Rules (which I'm using and agree with) and Stronglifts and the Nerdfitness body weight exercises. I am not familiar with those plans, but they are reputable sources and some great people on here say great things, which is good enough for me.

I was going to say the same thing :) Something you can lift for 6-8 reps, the last couple of reps a struggle but still maintaining good form.

If you lift to failure, you will need a spotter for some exercises.

I love posts like this !!! I'm kind of at goal weight and fairly happy with how I look. I do a lot of jillian michaels DVDs and have just added in slightly heavier weights for most of it (heavier for me at 6 kg dumbells). But I'm starting to think I need to add in some proper lifting to get my body looking how I really want it. Can anyone point me in the right direction ?? I have a bench and variety of weights in my shed that my brother has abandoned, but not sure where to start. The pics of the girls earlier look amazing and I do would like tighter abs.

  • Wish my hubby looked like you!! Could I ask should I strength train right away or when I have lost weight?? Can I still loose weight and strength train? Also how often should you train and what cal should you eat after strength training does it work out that in the excercise section on here? Thanks Cathryn.

All right, you've convinced me! I'll find me some weights and not mind so much if I don't lose these last 5 pounds - if I can look anywhere close to some of those, I'll be over the moon!

Yes, start straight away. When you lose weight without lifting you tend to lose muscle mass as well, strength training and adequate protein helps to maintain as much as possible :) You can definitely lose weight at the same time (I am right now!)

A full body routine, 3 x a week is what many beginners start with. Also, look into programs such as "New rules of lifting for women", "starting strength" and "stronglifts 5x5". I've heard so many good things about all of them.

There is a "strength training" option in the cardio section of the exercise tab.

Push ups, squats, lunges. Then, try to find a cheap gym? I hear YMCA's are affordable. In Colorado there are a lot of public rec centers that charge about $5 a visit, less if you buy punch cards...

And ask any friends who might belong to a gym if they have guest passes and wouldn't mind if you tagged along once in a while.

I know people were asking how big the weights were, but my question is, is it the bar weights like in gyms or dumbbells and other kinds of home equipment? I'm trying to figure out what weights to buy for home as I haven't started lifting yet and I have limited space here..

The YMCA is 10 miles away. Certainly can't afford extra gas if I can't afford a gym membership. :/

If you have a little money / or a birthday coming up, get the new rules of lifting book (no more than $15) and see if anyone's selling some weights cheap on ebay, or listed locally.

If you are FLAT broke, see the following:

    No weights? Use household items:

So inspiring! I was planning to go to the gym tomorrow anyway, but now I'm planning a HEAVY, full body strength workout!

Gonna have to start with the DB's though, as I'm too weak to even lift the bar (apart from the EZ Curl bar).
