When I heard that commercial my first thoughts were "wow someone in their marketing department needs to be fired."
Seriously.
I want to try it because it's 10 calories but... "it's not for women" so I can't.

when i seen the commercial,i never took as a slight to women i thought it was gay happy hour for to good old boys no women aloud they need a few cals for theirs hard activity so i said ok i can deal with that0

I used to drink Dr Pepper 10, since those commercials I quit. My husband also stopped. Its completely rude and disrespectful.0

I think they were counting on viewers understanding sarcasm.

Hmmm... I don't get the uproar. Advertisers market to their target audience - there's a lot of diet beer ads right now targeting men and no one throws a fit about that. Let the men have the Dr Pepper 10 - it's not nearly as good as diet dr pepper anyway.0

It's funny - I had a whole different take on their strategy. To me, I thought they were trying to attract women to the product by using sexism to "deny" them access. I think their most-wanted-response was for women to say "OH YEA? WATCH THIS!" and run out and buy a bunch.

I'm pretty sure it's some sort of reverse psychology. If you say "It's not for women," women are challenged to try to drink it, and men are reaffirmed of their manliness for drinking something diet.
I wonder how it would work if it were reversed...

This....it's a commercial and they are trying to target the male segment on this one. Maybe they did some research and found that not enough men drank the product so they are trying to get the numbers up. Granted I am a man and thought the commercial was really funny because of it's absurdity and I can see why some would be offended by it but maybe take a step back and really look at your offended by, a soft drink commercial. Society as a whole has become way too sensitive and seems to try very hard to find something offensive in almost everything.0 -

It may be "just a joke", but these types of jokes perpetuate a lot of discrimination - ESPECIALLY when children see/hear them.
That being said, it isn't very good at even being a joke - it's not funny, just really stupid. Not to mention just as insulting to men as it is to women - they sell the diet drink that way because they want to market a diet soda to a male audience, and they think the only way they can possibly do that is by making ridiculous jokes appealing to their "manliness"? How fragile do they think men are?

I ran out and bought some to try as soon as I saw the first commercial. I like it! It's not a dead ringer for the original (which is my FAVE), but it's closer than Diet Dr Pepper. I still drink water 95% of the time, but it can be a nice treat on occasion.0 -

It's a joke. So is every commercial that has some product and the woman teasingly says it's "not for boys." Both use a stereotyped characteristic of each gender. Dr Pepper 10 uses the macho manly-man, the others use a teasing vixen or a "cutesy" typed female who giggles and bats her lashes. We could also throw in commercials advertising kid products that do the same thing but eh.
Seriously, there's nothing to be offended by. The only place I've seen "not for women" is on the commercial. The product itself doesn't say it. I imagine their goal was to have a light-hearted laugh about gender stereotyping as far as the whole action movie thing went then the tease of "you can't have it because you're female, this is a man's drink." We classify alcoholic beverages by gender and no one seems up in arms about that. Long story short it's meant to be stupid and I'm pretty sure the people that came up with it thought it would be a funny challenge that might boost its sales from women buying it to (hopefully not seriously) spite the commercial.

It only teaches kids discrimination if the parents are the type that let the TV raise their kid for them and don't actually tell them right for wrong. And last time I checked kids were glued to channels for kids or that are mostly kid friendly and are more concerned about commercials for the next big toy or animated movie than one that has a weird guy advertising soda.0 -

^^^ This. The commercials (both on the radio and television) play out all the "male" stereotypes in a sort of over-the-top way. It's meant to be a joke. Personally as a Film and Media Studies major I find the commercial hilarious because I am a man and yet I don't fit into many of the stereotypes that they make, e.g. talks about tools.
As some have mentioned here already I think the main purpose of it was to get men drinking a "diet" soda. With that being said commercials have always displayed a reversal of their target audience. For instance in my opinion I don't think Victoria Secret commercials are made for female viewers.0 -
The commercial reminded me too much of the radio commercials for Hardees back when I was preggers with my boys. Everything was "enjoy Hardees while you can because soon you're stuck with McDonald's and their playspace." Really? The whole ad implied that mothers and kids were NOT welcome at Hardees. So I obliged. Of course it helped that that their burgers (along with most others) taste like dirt, but still. I used to like breakfast there.
Dr..... Pepper 10 is no better. I figure if they don't want me to drink it I'll oblige and not buy it. Hey, if they don't want my money they don't get it. My hubby won't buy it 'cause it's diet, so less money for them. I will say, I do like the standard diet Dr...... Pepper. And I confess to loving the Gene Simmons ad.
