Ok...so EVRYONE chooses to be fat??? Really??
Whether they choose to be obese or not, it's only fair that someone pay for the 2nd seat if their body overflows into it. Please explain how that would not be fair.

It's humiliating. If nothing....require optional seat width preference. I'd rather measure my butt in my home than get humiliated.

I fully understand the humiliation, but it's not like the person showed up at the airport and all of a sudden was like, "Holy crap, I'm obese." They knew, and chose to do nothing about it, it's not the airline's fault that they're obese.

But when you fly it is a treat and it may have been all you had to get a flight. You think "hopefully I can fit and dont have to worry about it" Even @ 350, I could still fit in a seat comfortably with an extender. When I fly...I am on a trip, vaca, etc and I don't have the extra money to spend. So, yes, I chose to not do anything about it because I hope I can squeeze in. I will scrunch up as best as I can. I am sorry that my body offends someone. I am doing the best I know how.

So, the person whose seat your encroaching on should just have to suck it up?? That's fair??

^^^^ this I had to sit between two large people on a flight to TX and the lady kept saying she was sorry she was all over me. But the man kept rolling his eyes at me when I had to tighten my belt or when I had to to go the bathroom and kept elbowing my face and acting annoyed I was there.. was not the dream flight for me ether!

I fly a ton for business. Planes are much more comfortable for me these days than last year at this time, but I never spilled over into the seat next to me. However, if you take up two seats you should pay for two seats. Or, don't fly.

Like I said, I would rather be required to put my seat measurement online when I book the ticket rather than be escorted off the plane to purchase another seat. No it is not fair to the tiny hineys...but if you have ever been humiliated in public for something like this...your heart goes out.

The seats are too small to start with. Obese people should not have to pay more, nor should someone who is abnormally large due to a genetic disorder. There should be a few larger seats reserved for larger people that can be booked in advance.

if the whole flight is booked but that one extra seat then they are losing money thats understandable. if there are unbooked or unoccupied seats then they should refund the extra seat. mayby they should make seats bigger in general i mean common who wants to be so packed into a little seat the person beside them is all up in there space lol

From that point of view - why not let me have that extra spare seat for free?

Yes, just like some people end up beside a crying baby or a smelly person or a stuck up b****. If you demand the best then you buy a first class ticket. I am small and the person I sit beside always hogs the arm rest. I have had skinny people fall asleep and lean on me or snore. My most enjoyable flying experience was next to an obese man. He was a great conversationalist and he let my son watch a movie on his laptop.

If you take up 2 seats, you pay for 2 seats. I can't have 2 seats to myself without paying for them, so why should anyone else? If my 5 year old flies with me, I have to pay for his seat too since he is too big for my lap. On a recent trip my boyfriend and I took it would've been awesome to have the extra seat in our row so we could spread out, but we didn't pay for 3 seats, we paid for 2, and another person paid for the seat next to mine. Airline tickets are not sold by the person, they are sold by the seat.

I've been trapped in the middle seat, or even the window seat. It gets old. They should pay. for 2 seats. My uncle (who has lost 160 lbs since this happened to him) had to pay for two seats several times. He was pissed, but he also knew he took up the space for 2 people and didn't think it was unfair. He was mostly pissed at himself.

Yes I do. I feel really bad for those ppl but they are taking up an extra seat and we all know there is something youcando about the weight , most of the time. I think if someone truly has a medical problem where they cant lose weight thats different but most are just not trying. Those with med resons as to why they can't lose weight shouldn't have to pay but the rest need to get off the couch, put the ice cream down and get moving.

I haven't read most of the comments.

given the fact I was stuck next to an overweight person who took up half my tiny seat on a plane ride once, I do think sometimes it's necessary for an overweight person to buy an extra ticket. It's more comfortable for them as well. It sucks they make the seats so small, but that's the way it is.

But if you can't fit in one, pay for the extra seat.

side note to all the people making stupid comments about skinny people should fly free and or as a child, GROW UP.

I can see both sides of the argument, and yes, it's humiliating - but realistically, for your own comfort and the comfort of those around you it is the right thing to do.

If you take over two seats, pay for another seat. That's not unfair. I'm sorry if it's humiliating for you, but you are literally using MORE than what you PAID for.

I had a talk with my mother about this a year ago, she went off on this rant about how if they were going to do that then skinny people should only have to pay for half of a seat, and I retorted "If two skinny people want to share ONE seat, then fine!" She was not happy with me.

Yes I would say it is fair, the airline can't sell the seat if some one is taking up two...so what happens is then everyone else flying shares the cost of that seat, is that fair?

I understand that if someone takes up two seats, they are expected to pay for two seats. I think it should be handled in a kind and respectful way, without causing undue stress or embarrassment. I also agree that it is unfair for someone to have to "share" their seat, as well.

I have never seen or been a part of this situation but, I have what might seem like a silly question. Say, for instance, the morbidly obese passenger does pay for a second seat. Now, are they made comfortable in their two seats or are they still stuffed into one seat, hanging over the edges? Is there some special way the airline seats have removeable arm rests, so they can actually feel at ease in those two seats? Are they really paying to just hang over into that seat or can they actually sit in two? I would call that unfair, if they have to pay but not enjoy the comfort of the added space.
