Should obese people who can't fit in 1 seat pay for 2?

  • I've been trapped in the middle seat, or even the window seat. It gets old. They should pay. for 2 seats. My uncle (who has lost 160 lbs since this happened to him) had to pay for two seats several times. He was pissed, but he also knew he took up the space for 2 people and didn't think it was unfair. He was mostly pissed at himself.

Yes I do. I feel really bad for those ppl but they are taking up an extra seat and we all know there is something youcando about the weight , most of the time. I think if someone truly has a medical problem where they cant lose weight thats different but most are just not trying. Those with med resons as to why they can't lose weight shouldn't have to pay but the rest need to get off the couch, put the ice cream down and get moving.

I haven't read most of the comments.

given the fact I was stuck next to an overweight person who took up half my tiny seat on a plane ride once, I do think sometimes it's necessary for an overweight person to buy an extra ticket. It's more comfortable for them as well. It sucks they make the seats so small, but that's the way it is.

But if you can't fit in one, pay for the extra seat.

side note to all the people making stupid comments about skinny people should fly free and or as a child, GROW UP.

I can see both sides of the argument, and yes, it's humiliating - but realistically, for your own comfort and the comfort of those around you it is the right thing to do.
  • If you take over two seats, pay for another seat. That's not unfair. I'm sorry if it's humiliating for you, but you are literally using MORE than what you PAID for.

I had a talk with my mother about this a year ago, she went off on this rant about how if they were going to do that then skinny people should only have to pay for half of a seat, and I retorted "If two skinny people want to share ONE seat, then fine!" She was not happy with me.

Yes I would say it is fair, the airline can't sell the seat if some one is taking up two...so what happens is then everyone else flying shares the cost of that seat, is that fair?

I understand that if someone takes up two seats, they are expected to pay for two seats. I think it should be handled in a kind and respectful way, without causing undue stress or embarrassment. I also agree that it is unfair for someone to have to "share" their seat, as well.

I have never seen or been a part of this situation but, I have what might seem like a silly question. Say, for instance, the morbidly obese passenger does pay for a second seat. Now, are they made comfortable in their two seats or are they still stuffed into one seat, hanging over the edges? Is there some special way the airline seats have removeable arm rests, so they can actually feel at ease in those two seats? Are they really paying to just hang over into that seat or can they actually sit in two? I would call that unfair, if they have to pay but not enjoy the comfort of the added space.
