Yesterday was a rest day. Planning a shorter 3-4 miles tonight. I have a question for the group about 1/2 marathon training.
I looked up some training programs, like 10 week and 13 week programs to get ready for a 1/2 in September.
Here's my problem... For my long runs of the week, I am already at what I should be at towards the end of the programs. Should I start over from the beginning of a program or just keep going with what I am doing on my own?
check out the training program at Runner's World. They allow you to input the level/pace that you are currently running...then it adjusts. You enter the number of weeks you have until your race and it maps it out for you. I've been using it for the last 3 weeks and have seen great results. check it out!
Cool, thanks!!! :drinker:0 -

This group is awesome!
I'm not that great at running, but I've been doing it on and off since elementary school. I'm hoping to run a 40min 10k by the end of summer, and do the Ironman in 4 years when I graduate university0 -
Good morning!
I got in 10.6 miles yesterday -- in a record time -- and FINALLY it was my running buddy asking ME to slow down! that was a first and to be honest it felt GREAT!!!! She's the one I'm runnng the 1/2 with and I had been stressing this run all day -- wondering if I had lost my edge or ability to complete this 10.6 mile run.....NOPE...I was right on. For once, I made sure I ate and drank plenty all day long. It was not terribly hot and I was ready to run -- and run FAST!!! She had to walk a bit -- but even with the walking we completed the run in 1 hour 36 minutes -- WOOHOO!!!!
Today is a rest day for me -- my toenails hurt! What's up with that!!!!
Have a great day!
Julie
Hey Julie! Awesome long run! Sounds like those tempo runs are paying off! It seems to me that you will have no trouble with that 1/2 in September. When I ran my first half, I only got up to 10 miles in my training and then did the race. I'll tell you, those last 3 miles were painful, but I did it!
By the way, I have had the toenail thing on occasion when I was doing long runs--it usually just meant I needed to trim the nails a little shorter, at least that worked for me.
Happy Monday!

5 miles for me this morning. I got so lost in crazy thought at mile 4 that I started speeding up and had to walk the last big hill. I should do that more often though--maybe I would get faster!
Great job with all the long runs over the weekend and congrats to Shuntae on her first 5K--awesome!
I signed up for a 10K in 2 weeks and my 11yo daughter will do the 1 mile run at the race. I will be working with her on that--should be fun!
Great day to all,

Good afternoon,
I ran 5 miles bright and early this morning. It was with some friends from the gym so it was a good start to the week. Have a great day!!!0 -
Hey everyone.
I didn't do my run yet today...just played some tennis this morning.
I had to share my 5K race experience from yesterday. I met my two friends there, and the both of them had to use the potty prior to the race. The line was crazy long, so I offered to take their race packets to my car while they waited in line, and then we'd scoot to the starting line. I ran to the car, came back to meet my friends and the whole street is barren - not one person remained in the bathroom line - my friends are no where to be found. I look down another road and I see people walking, so I figure they are heading to the start line. So, I started booking up the street. As I turn the corner, I hear the gun go off. The herd of people take off - I totally missed the start of the race! Now I'm playing catch up to the people at the end of the pack, which means I'm dodging moms with double-wide jogging strollers, 7-year old kids, grandmothers, a couple of women in their third trimester of pregnancy. I've got my eyes open for my friends and after the first mile, I think I'm in deep trouble because I haven't seen them yet. They both run about a 30-minute 5K, so I'm thinking I am way, way behind. There is no split timers at the mile-markers and I didn't have time to start my watch, so I have no idea what my pace is...The second mile passes, no friends in sight. I did; however have to stop dead in my tracks as police officers blocked off the road, so an ambulance and other emergency vehicles could pass. Finally, I cross the finish line. I ran the race in 25 minutes flat! It certainly wasn't a PR day for me, but not bad considering I was about 100 yards behind the pack when the race began. My friends crossed about 5 minutes later. Evidentally, I passed them. They yelled out to me, but I just blew by them in my frazzled state. It was a pretty funny race. Bonus was two free beers and hot dogs post-race. Yay! :drinker:0 -
Hey Runners!
So, I was doing some research to find a half-marathon training program today...and stumbled into the personalized one from Runner's World. Be still, my heart...a program that doesn't assume I am a speed demon and works with me at my current level. I can't wait to start! Trying to decide between the Baltimore Half in October or the Richmond Half in November, but either way I am going to do one!

Hi guys,
havent been on much this weekend.
Saturday, the Hubbs and I got 2 really good workouts in (went to spinning @ the gym and lifted, and then we went snorkeling for several hours with friends)
Sunday, we had a triathlon. I'm still waiting for them to post the times online (I forgot to stop my watch, so I dont know how I did, but I think I came in around 1:22ish?) the swim was crazy, we had a high surf advisory, about 1/2 way through I wanted to quit, but I figured I was already all the way out there, so I had to swim back in   the bike and run were both pretty flat, so no issues there--will post my results whenever they get online
Today, I had a nice SLOW 4 mile recovery run.
anyways, I hope everyone is having a fabulous Monday! :flowerforyou:0 -
Hi Runners!! I was on vacation all week and just returned home today!! What a super busy and active vacation, LOVE it!! I was up early using the fitness room and then walking all around Disney, and the pool in the evening! PLENTY of exercise! I ran 3-4 miles most mornings, used the weights, and did pushups and abs in the hotel room.
It's great to be home!! Hope you all are happily running!

Welcome back Jess, glad you had a good vacation. We just love Disney too, and the deals this year are amazing. I never needed to run, I was trashed each night.
Funny story about the 5k Hessied. Adrenaline mixed with chaos just rocks!! Great job, and many time the stories are far better than the race.
For all ya southerners, who make fun of us northerners about winters, snow, ice... you pay today! Just finished an evening run, starry skies, and yes, 65 degrees and about 40% humidty. I planned to do about 6 miles, but ended up running over 1.5 hours just because I was having fun. It was just awesome. Now I sit on my deck cooling down and counting the stars.....
Keep going forward everyone.

There was one thing I was thinking about on my run but will forget if I don't post it.
Since we have some 1/2 and marathon newbies I thought I'd pass along some random shoe advice. It's tough to say this as a guy.... but it's true, you can't have enough shoes. Ouch!  On a serious note, it's a good plan to have a back-up pair or two and do a rotation when you run. Personally I like to vary brands and style some (asics, NB, saucony) so they fit a bit different and won't have the same pressure & wear points. Some prefer the same shoe, which is fine too. The main thing is get on a rotation so you are intermixing runs with fresh shoes and others near retirement. As an example, I have 4 pair on my active rotation right now. It will help keep your feet and joints healthy too. I wait until a great sale and buy several pair.
There is a lot to know about fit too. I think roadrunnersports.com has some of the best shoes sizing guides you can find. Get to know if you under, or over pronate and get a general idea if you need a straight or curved last. They have tons of self help sizing advice to follow.

Alright Raymond -- you have crossed the line :grumble: That post was just WRONG! Here we sit in 95 degrees with haze and humidity just trying to breathe and you come alond with a post like that! hmmmmm.....I'm sending you a swarm of mosquitoes along with some 100 degree temps!!!!0 -
I got in 5.5 miles today -- felt like I had weights on my feet but was pleasantly surprised that I finished in 52 minutes. Thought it was going to be more like 60 so that was a plus. Had a lot on my mind. :frown:
If I didn't have running to help me sort through my thoughts during stressful times I truly think I would explode! :explode: It's an amzaing outlet that I dont' think I could live without!
Hope you all have a happy Tuesday!

Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your quote. I have printed it and taped it to my computer. It's been a very difficult couple of weeks in my world and it always makes me put things in perspective.....so thank you!!!! :flowerforyou: Your positive energy is spreading!0 -
ran 3.0 yesterday....was trying for 5 but my body is mad at me for only taking one day off last week, plus i rode my bicycle to the gym and did 20 minutes of strength training before i ran. Happy running all!0

Good morning everyone!!
Took a few days off from MFP (and logging, too even) but still managed to run and eat healthy. I don't know why...I guess it was just the rebelliousness in me coming out. Got a little tired of logging everything, I suppose.
On Sunday I ran a 4 mile loop that has been in my mind for about a month now. I was so proud of myself that I actually did it!! It was kind of my old stomping ground when I was doing a lot of walking so to run it was so much fun! I even experienced running in the rain!
This morning I only did 2 miles but it was so humid at 6 am that I struggled a little. I've learned to accept good and bad running days. I think I'm going to get that little waist belt that everyone talks about. I really got thirsty on my run on Sunday. I looked for churches with spickets but didn't see any.
Take care all!0 -
i ran for 20 minutes yesterday outside. i don't know how to calculate my mileage. but it looks like this:
