I hate water

I love MFP forums. I never would have imagined I could ever read 10 pages of debates about water.0

Lemonade IS water. At least as much as any water found in the human body is water, which is what you said--the body is 60% water not 60% lemonade. Lemonade is impure water. All the water in you is impure; much of it far less pure than lemonade. If it's not water after stuff is dissolved into it, then the human body is 0% water.
If you are contending that the tiny amounts of "not water" that is in Mio is harmful, provide evidence that it is. Otherwise you are just making drinking plain water into a task you must complete no matter how distasteful, and there is no reason for that.
And stop suggesting I try it your way unless you will try it mine. Your way is PROVED not to be any better.
And the Mayo Clinic also says that soft drinks, sports drinks, and anything BUT alcohol CAN replace water for hydration! Because I prefer science, I believe them and dismiss what you say. If you were to show that your medical and scientific credentials were more respected than theirs--all 3700 specialists of them--I'd believe you over them. SO, what ARE your credentials?
"... At least as much as any water found in the human body is water, which is what you said ..."
Which is something that you've attributed to me that I did not say. At no point have I stated a percentage of water in any of these drinks, the human body, or anything similar.
To try to equate lemonade with being water is nuts. While it is true that lemonade contains water, it is patently false to say that lemonade IS water. That's just foolish, since almost everything on this planet contains some water. We don't consider the human body to be "water" even though a large percentage of it is comprised of water.
As for the rest - I really don't care in the slightest what you believe. Your arguments are irrational and not based on facts.
Have a good day.0 -
... Earlier you suggested that someone squeeze a little lemon into the water to make it more palatable. That's a very weak lemonade....
I'm not sure who you are attributing this comment to, but I wanted to clarify that I did not say this.0 -

OK, gotcha. Would be helpful if the quote feature said who was being quoted.
I do know that someone else said lemonade wasn't suitable, then said the OP ought to squeeze some lemon juice into pure water.
While someone may want to avoid taking in the sugar or artificial sweetener of lemonade, there is no reason why drinking lemonade isn't as suitable for keeping the body hydrated as plain water.0 -
That went WAY over his head!!
Or I just played along and not wanted to be rude?
But wouldn't you rather quote some stupid myth, then tell everyone you don't care about proving your viewpoint?0 -
WHY should people "Just do it" as regards drinking plain water? There's no evidence presented here to suggest it's necessary. WHY should people "just do" things they don't like, even when there is no demonstrated benefit over something they do like? Instead of lemonade (which can contain sugar), how about you address why the additive to water most mentioned here, which is Mio, isn't as healthy as water as a choice for hydrating the body?
I was addressing lemonade because it is incorrect to state that "lemonade is water" as you did. Some have advocated all types of soft drinks, sports drinks, alcohol - you name it - as a method of maintaining hydration for someone that does not prefer the taste of water. Honestly, that is a bit crazy.
I suggest just drinking water for a few days to get accustomed to it, and you will naturally adapt and be ok with it after a short while. The benefits of this are that you aren't drinking calories, ingesting too much sugar, caffeine or other artificial preservatives and sweeteners.
As for Mio, it might be a way to make water more palatable, but it does have some of the drawbacks I mentioned. Namely dyes, artificial sweetners and preservatives:
"Ingredients:
Water, Malic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Contains Less than 2% of Natural Flavor, Sucralose and Acesulfame Potassium (Sweeteners), Potassium Citrate, Red 40, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative)."

I never realized until this thread that the oceans are not made of water. What is that stuff in the oceans?
(Sea water won't even hydrate you! Whoever said the earth's surface is mostly water was lying and obviously not a scientist.)
The water in the ocean is about as pure as lemonade. So if you believe lemonade is water, or Crystal Light is water, you can feel free to also believe the ocean is water. If you believe water must be pure to be water, there is no water on earth.0 -
What you want to count as water is up to you. But your body counts just about everything liquid as water. If only pure water counted most babies would be dehydrated. Both formula and breast-milk have protein and sugar (among other things) and yet even babies with their immature guts are able to extract the water from them to hydrate themselves.
Amazing bodies we have; don't you think it great how they multi task without us even thinking about it?0 -
I dislike water too..I can drink it now and then, but otherwise I drink alot of crystal light...or else I freeze Powerade Zero in an ice cube tray and then add them to water for some flavor0
-
Honestly, I hated water too. And you will continue hating it if you keep sugaring it up. Try to force yourself to drink it for a couple days, drink no sugary beverages and you will actually learn to love it. I went from NEVER drinking water, only juice or soda for the most part...to SOLELY drinking water. Yes, I only drink water now and it only took maybe a week to not even want the sugary beverages anymore. Soda makes me feel ill now. And I would most definitely avoid the packets that add flavor to your water, they almost ALL contain aspartame. A few don't but look carefully. Read up on aspartame, bad stuff!0

I drink..coffee. Probably get 1/2 my fluid intake a day from coffee. The rest from food, a little bit of plain water, or other low-cal drinks.
Yummy, yummy dark roast with just a little cream and a little sugar. Kicks water's *kitten* all day.0 -

OK, I agree with you completely. I will make one tiny quibble: it's not any liquid. Oil is liquid and will not hydrate you. But, I am being pedantic. You obviously mean that any beverage (short of strong booze, I guess, which will make you dehydrated) will hydrate the body.0 -
I hate plain water as well unless I just had a major workout and I'm panting like a dog. LOL. I recommend Crystal Light Wild Strawberry but be careful, has a fairly large amount of caffeine in it. But very good. I drink one of those a day and then for the rest of the day, I substitute cranberry juice, milk, strawberry milk (my favorite), Kiwi Strawberry packets, any of those for water. I wouldn't recommend drinking soda or tea because of all the calories. I hope this helps0

The point of drinking water is to take in fluid to hydrate the body. Unless there is something dissolved in the water that our bodies can't handle (like the high levels of salt in sea water), it will hydrate us just fine.
There may be other reasons not to drink some beverages - you may not want the sugar or caffeine or artificial sweeteners in them - but if the goal is to hydrate the body so that it will function properly, they will all work as well as water.
Actually ocean water will HYDRATE you just fine. It will also imbalance electrolytes, primarily sodium. But it will still hydrate. And yes, some beverages like lemonade have sugar you might legitimately want to limit, but sugar isn't poison either and the point remains that you can drink absolutely no plain water ever and be just as healthy as if you do. If I get my water from some lemonade, some milk, some Mio, a little coffee, some tea, and a soda, and my calories and macros are within my goals, it's absolutely no different than if I had no beverage but water and my macros are within my goals. No difference at all.0 -

Tea has calories? Wow. All these 53 years I though it was calorie free. I'll update the MFP database, which also lists it as calorie free. How many calories does it have?0 -
Mio is awesome. It's a liquid that comes in a little grey sqiurt bottle, you can find it right by crystal light. It tastes so good, ALL I want to drink is water with mio in it.0

I think drinking sea water may make you vomit, in which case you're not going to end up very hydrated. But, since nobody wants to drink it, it doesn't matter.
It sort of sounds like you're arguing with me uneccessarily.0 -
i hate water also--- i bought those MIO --they have sweet tea-- and its pretty good0

Because it burns calories.0 -
Try what parents do to get their children to learn to drink water. This also waters down juice for if they want juice (as straight juice can be really sugary and gets them hooked on sugar easily). Mix about half a glass of juice with half a glass of water. After you get used to that, decrease the amount of juice in the glass and increase the amount of water for a while. Once used to that, keep decreasing the juice and increasing the water until you get to all water in the glass. It may take a while, but I don't recommend drinking caffeinated drinks in place of water. Caffeine can dehydrate you. If you have too much caffeine in your system and not enough hydration, you can get muscle cramps. :sad:0

I personally LOVE mio... its amazing!0
-
i LOVE water.
You could try ice cold water, seems to work for people who hate drinking plain water.0 -
Drink whatever you want. Don't like plain water? Diet soda, non-diet soda, Crystal Lite, coffee, tea, juice, milk, sports drinks, beer... All hydrate you just about as effectively as water, the only downside is that some of them have calories you would have to account for. Hydration is all about FLUID, not about water.
WTF??0 -

I am the same way! CANT Stand plain water! I bought me a 28 oz sports bottle with a straw from Walmart...they have the flavored water (Propel or Walmart has some that is very good) and it makes it go down WAY quicker. I also put lemon juice and sometimes add some sweet n low...kinda makes it taste like lemonade!! Hope this helps! = )0

Water's good - drink it carbonated, with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime. Learn to love it, it's one of your best friends!
Exactly what I would suggest.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE seltzer water. I know that there are some people who believe it isn't as healthy as plain water, but it is just water with carbonation and study after study has shown that there are no bad effects in healthy people. My husband bought me a soda stream for x-mas and I make my own and drink about a liter of it everyday!0 -

Wow, that was a completely helpful comment!0 -
There really aren't any substitutions for water. Your body is 60% water, not 60% lemonade.
However, maybe try squeezing some lime or lemon into it. And maybe keep a pitcher of it in the fridge so it can always be nice and cold and refreshing.
Have you read this thread and the references given here? Lemonade is WATER. And the body's water? Isn't pure either. It's full of electrolytes. All liquids count as water. Anything else is pseudoscience.
Uhm. Yeah, and I also studied biology for four years. Is that a pseudoscience, too?
The answer to the question of "what is water?" would fall under the realm of chemistry.
I majored in art history, though, so I'm not qualified to answer the question, period.
Actually I think the question here isn't "what is water? so much as "what counts as water for purposes of hydrating the body?" And your degree subject isn't important so long as you learned in college 1)-logic, and 2)- to evaluate research based on things like credentials and peer review. I had listed peer reviewed research from the Mayo Clinic, a well-respected medical research/teaching hospital, proving that water contained in anything you consume hydrates the body equally well. This poster argued with no citation of source that lemonade =/= water in hydrating the body. I referenced the sources and said that unsubstantiated claims such as hers were pseudoscience. (It's usually called "broscience" here.) Her reply, rather than provide sources for her assertions was an "appeal to authority" by throwing out her college major.
I was a biology major myself for two years before transferring to psychology. I later got an RN. I currently do IT at a company that manufactures metals and chemicals.
I believe the answer to "what counts as water for purposes of hydrating the body" fall into the realm of biophysiology rather than chemistry.
I was kidding. I agree with you.
Edited to add: I see in one of your posts that you have Aspergers, so you might not always catch sarcasm or irony or other sorts of humour. Don't worry - I agree with all your posts in this thread. You're being very logical AND citing highly reliable sources.
But, you're arguing with some .... um... not very bright people. If they want to drink "pure" water or pay extra for zero-calorie impurities like Mio, at least they won't die of hydration... MUCH LIKE THE PEOPLE WHO DRINK ONLY TEA OR DIET COKE!
You're right, I don't usually catch sarcasm and/or irony. I understand them if I notice them and can sometimes even use them, but I often don't notice them. Even in person, as we (Aspies) seem to lack the ability to read body language as well. This appears to be biological, so there's a limit as to how well we can be taught to do this.
I also don't know where they'd GET pure water. I'm not sure there's any on earth. Our chemist says water dissolves one thing or another from any material you try to contain it in or deliver it with. Water is as close to a universal solvent as we know of, so it dissolves almost everything. You sure as he11 don't get "pure" water from the tap, or in a bottle at the store.
I don't drink "plain" water because our water here is awful. I drink coffee (black w/ no sweet) in the morning and iced tea the rest of the day. I drink Mio or diet sodas when I'm out and about, because I can easily get them at the gas station or convenience store. I don't track water or any of the aforementioned beverages because they are essentially nothing. None of those has significant amounts of anything. Not even sodium, which is the oft-cited problem with diet sodas. Diet Coke has 20mg sodium, the others have zero.
I suppose I "get" that I'll never convince some of these people, no matter how good my sources. It's a little like I'm...compelled. I love Randall Munroe (XKCD) because he's so spot on with so many (admittedly geeky) things. This comic completely hit home:
