Fat =/= curvy

  • why do you care? worry about your own body, not everyone else's. if a larger woman feels good and is confident and happy in her skin, assuming her weight isn't putting her in medical danger - which it likely isn't, BMI 25-30 actually live the longest - and wants to call herself curvy, then so be it. any problem with this screams insecurity to me.

    I don't generally see the media using it in this manner. I see them using it on women who are slightly overweight or who genuinely have "curves", but not in the other instances. The people I do see using the word in that manner is the women themselves. And, well, if they're happy with their bodies and happy using that word, why do you care? It's their body.

    Call me crazy but I consider all of these women overweight except Natalie Portman.

    Whaaaaa?? You cray!! Even the first and third photo??

    I think some people just generally see curvy as fat. The amount of times I've seen KK been referred to as fat in DM comments. I think people are used to bones and boyish figures. Le sigh.

    Lawda mercy! So true. So happy to have found a man who loves my curves and has called me curvy since even when I was 60lbs lighter!

    Why do I care? Uh, because I do.

    BMI 25-30 live the longest? Where did you get that snippet of information from? Sources please?

    If you're okay with fat people calling themselves curvy, or the media painting anyone who's above 110lbs as curvy, then fine. But it annoys me, and by the looks of it, a few other people. Why do you care that I care?

    :laugh: @insecurity. Honey, I am VERY secure in my curves. Any insecurity I have due to my body is because of the fat or blemishes, not the shape.

    And it's more than possible to be bothered by something without it being an issue of insecurity.

    See and I consider KK overweight because if you see her non airbrushed in a bikini or short shorts she has an enormous amount of cottage cheese on her thighs. Now don't get wrong, i know all women have that, myself included. In my mind though, curvy means slim with well defined curves. But like I said, I know I'm crazy. I don't consider MM curvy either, I consider her overweight. Guess we all have our own definitions of curvy, overweight, etc.

    I was just thinking about how irritating that is....making women who are really thick and curvy think they're huge or making everyone else think curvy means massive...

    Skinny girls can have curves too. It's just the shape of one's body. Fat =/= curvy, it's just fat.

    The reason I'm trying to lose weight is cause I'm trying to get rid of my curves. I know I can't though, it's genetics and the way I am built.

    Yeah I know what you mean.. its like giving big girls a feel good excuse to be overweight. Curvy to me would be an hourglass shape or any shape that curves (small waist shapely thighs and legs etc..)

    just wow..

    The old 'it's their body' adage. Give it a rest please.

    And classic example; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2128131/Tamara-Ecclestone-displays-curvy-beach-body-tiny-bikini-tops-tan.html;

    According to DM, this is curvy;

    YES! Also this. Because curvy is so overused, many people associate it with fat or huge.

    That's fair enough. But even when she's extremely slim, she has a curvy shape. Because her waist is very small and her hips are wide. And as for the first woman? She looks like she has a very low body fat. Why do you see her as overweight?

    So you're calling anyone above 110 pounds as fat?! really :grumble: fair sure if i ever get down to 110 lbs i would be skin and bones and you'd be able to see every single bone in my body.

    By that logic, when I go get a tan I can call myself Latin. Cause actual definitions dont matter, only my interpretation of them.

    Again, jumping to conclusions. How does that make sense? I NEVER said anything above 110lbs is fat. Don't be ridiculous.

    What I'm trying to say is that the media paints anyone other than stick thin as curvy, regardless of shape.

    My goal weight is 140, and I will stop if I start looking too lean. So, not, I defo do not consider over 110lbs fat by default. In fact, I consider 110lbs way too skinny unless you're like 4 foot tall.

    When I was around 150 lbs in highschool (at 5'0), people would tell me how 'grown up' I looked lol. They'd say I was so voluptuous and they loved my shape (males and females). I've always had a big butt and big boobs with a little waist. However, knew I was significantly overweight even though I had 'curves' and no rolls. I still had a lot of body fat which was evident when I was nude. Now I still have the same hourglass figure but I'm 129. Still overweight by BMI standards, but not by body fat standards. I'm still curvy but also healthy. I guess my thing was that I never kidded myself that I was healthy just because I had a nice shape.

    I don't think Natalie is any more defined than a couple photos up there.

    Except for the fact that your definition of overweight is extremely distorted. The other women, with the exception of the woman in the pink top and maybe in the black dress, are by no means overweight. Just because they're not super skinny like Natalie Portman(don't get me wrong, she is GORGEOUS) does not mean that they are overweight.
    That's just unrealistic.

    ETA- Natalie Portman isn't skin and bones. Ooops.

    I am not saying 'grossly obese' as in 'ew', I am using grossly obese as in the medical term, grossly meaning extremely. Please don't jump to conclusions.

    The word you're looking for is 'morbidly'.

    I put that into the original post now, but I am pretty sure it's a widely used term and not derogatory.

    I just wanted to say, the term grossly obese is not derogatory. Gross can also mean:

    1.flagrant and extreme

    It doesnt always have to mean:

    2.Obscene or vulgar.

    People take offense to things like this. And THIS is why society uses the term "curvy" because it makes it ok then to be grossly obese.

    It's like, when they say gross loan, they not talking about obsecenity. I wish people would stop jumping to conclusions. I wouldn't refer to an obese person as gross other than in my head. There's no need for it.

    Oh I forgot to mention that I'm trying to change my mindset. I have body image issues and I am working on changing my goals to more realistic ones with the help of the amazing people on here. I think curves are nice, I just wish I could like mine. I completely agree when you say fat doesn't equal curves, I guess I keep forgetting that. The media has impacted me quite a bit.

    That's really, really rude.

    Why do so many threads on mfp end up with skinny bashing comments? Makes me sick.

    And in reply to the OP

    OMG IT DRIVES ME MAD TOO

    It's delusional to think your roles of fat are curves, and sexy. If you're in to fat chicks fine, good on you, but don't kid yourselves into thinking you're a beyonce lookalike.
    I've been caught in the delusion before, when I was 16 and thought I was sexy as hell, I was all like "YEAH I'M CURVY, RL WOMEN HAVE CURVES!" etc etc, and now I just *facepalm* at my 16 year old self.

    I am FAT. I have big hips and a small waist, underneath the fat somewhere. When I lose the excess fat, I will have DEFINED CURVES.
    But just now, all I am, is lumpy.

    Fat isn't curvy. Curvy isn't fat. People need to stop trying to justify their own laziness/choice not to lose weight by claiming to be "curvy"

    As part of this, I had obese girls who are super proud of their massive tits, and it's like...your boobs aren't big because you have big boobs, your boobs are big because ALL OF YOU IS BIG. Natural big boobs look great, but when they're all lumpy they're just as unattractive as other body parts are when they're too fat.

    Now, seriously, nothing against fat people, I am a fat people, but just call a spade a spade. If you're genuinely happy looking fat, then fine, just be happy about being fat. But if you have to kid yourselves by saying you're curvy, you're in denial and need to lose weight really.
