In terms of nutritional science, I don't buy the "you can use science to prove anything" excuse. There is objective truth to be found.

The problem is it hasn't been found yet.

Isn't there a phrase that most of us heard when we were little, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".
I never heard this growing up. It wasn't until I was an adult and heard another adult say this. I looked at her like she had a 3rd arm growing out of her forehead.
I wonder if people who tout this phrase realize what a smarmy, condescending, arrogant and ultimately impotent use of the phrase it is. In principle, it's great. I get it. Why say anything at all if you just want to be mean? That's fine. But in every instance I've ever seen or heard the infamous Bambi quote used with adults, it's always someone who is judging someone else, attempting to publicly shame someone into a behavior standard that aligns with their own.

What adult capable of critical thinking actually believes they are enacting change by telling someone who is being a jerk on an Internet forum "if you can't say anything nice, don't say nothing at all."? Let's be honest. Trotting out the lesson bestowed by Thumper's dad** on an Internet forum is little more than self-righteous moral posturing. When something negative is said, pointing it out publicly (often quoting it!) and shaming the author only brings more attention to the comment itself.

Sorry, I am grumpy today. It must be because I'm hungry, lonely and my shoes are too small. I really don't like the Thumper reference, and how it's used. Unless, of course, you want to shame people about eating the blossoms.

I won't pretend that people can get impatient, rude and sometimes even mean here. There are jerks on the Internet. There are jerks on MFP (one may have typed this message). If someone is breaking a forum rule, please report that person.

The argument about being respectful and not being so thin-skinned has already been made. I just wanted to cry about the Thumper reference. It really does pain me.

** Yes, it is a lesson bestowed by Thumper's dad. It is Thumper's mom that reminds Thumper what his dad taught his earlier that day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi8f9g8-Wpc

Yes, I realize this post could be construed as little more than self-righteous moral posturing. I own that.

there is one particular troll i see in a lot of threads acting like she is the nutrition guru...i'm suprised she hasnt shown up here yet. The sad thing is she isnt in great shape at ALL, but constantly dismisses everyone else's fitness opinions if they are not the same as hers. It really amusing to see some one who obviously has a long way to go (as do we all) constantly bashing other people's appearances and calling herself "an hour glass" (uhhh NO you're not), and a "goddess". (yeeeah okkkk).

    I agree with this 100% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

George W Bush went to Yale (and had a higher GPA than John Kerry).
Point? I don't give a crap what your credentials are, I can tell when you don't know WTF you are talking about.

. Isn't there a phrase that most of us heard when we were little, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". What

I never heard this...I was abandoned by my parents and raised by wolves. Don't assume everyone had the same experience growing up. :flowerforyou:

same here. I was banished and raised by a rock band of wolves and a southern belle. I heard the phrase but knew it only was meant to be applied in the woods.

    Finally! Someone who gets me!

Oh, and to the little passive-aggressive posse we seem to have going on, you know you're doing the same thing as the " troll who's being productive" right?

Ahhhh. I love the smell of ironing the morning...smells like victory.

Great! I've got a couple shirts for you to iron.

I have noticed this as well. I have only been on MFP for 3 weeks and am reluctant to post at all because "if I wanted negativity I can find that anywhere". I think maybe some people post sarcastically - but it comes across as negative because, well, on a computer, there is no voice intonation or smile or wink or - just words. Maybe we should all be a little more cautious about what we are posting and read and re-read our "advice" before hitting the reply button. Hope everyone has a productive day.....:)

    people on MFP are jerks.

they're cranky because they're hungry from calorie restriction, sore from working out, tired from the combination of the two. they haven't had a bite of real cheesecake/pizza/snickers bar in too long. they haven't gotten laid. they've had to smell raunchy bo, protein shake farts, and overpowering perfume at the gym all day and they have a headache. they've quit smoking, cut back on the caffiene, and eliminated soda from their diets. and on top of that, they probably have secret low self esteem, which brought them to this torturous lifestyle in the first place.

so they take out all their misery on others on the forums. it makes them feel better about themselves.

once you understand this, the forums are quite fun.

    if you're a troll

    I  you.

In case anyone was wondering about what kind of behavior I was referring to - one need only go through and read this thread and you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

I love sarcasm. I love humor. I'm so rarely offended by anything said or done to me, and people who get offended too easily tend to annoy me. But my humor and sarcams is NEVER intended to hurt anyone else or bring them down.

Just a bunch of childish bullying is all it is.

If you need to bring someone else down to relieve your own stress - that says a lot about you.

So the only acceptable humor is sarcasm?

I think anyone that talks about bullying, claims someone is bullying, or says or thinks anything in any reference whatsoever to bullying should watch the South Park episode on Bullying. It will be educational.

Note, by saying that statement am I trying to impose my idea on others to watch that so technically I am now a bully.
