Do you tell them or let them figure it out on their own?

My sons name is Jayce. Said just like it's spelled & rhymes with "face".
Anyways, he constantly gets "Jaycee" "Jaycie" "Jason" .....
He has a twin brother named Jaxon. People always say to me "you named them Jaxon and Jason?" ummm no?
I named them Jaxon and Jayce. Thank you.
My married name is Galick. People are forever calling me "gay-lick" ........there is no y people.
This made me laugh. How in the world do you get Jason out of Jayce?! :noway:
And I feel you on "there is no y" except in my case it's "it's an o not an e" My last name is Wallingford. FORD not FERD.0 -
I get tired of ppl asking does my name end in a Y, Terri is for both guys and girls but an I is for the girl and a Y is for the guy. That's what i've always been told anyway. Then they want to pronounce it like "turri instead terri...drives me nuts LOL :laugh:0

My name is Alison. I used to take the bus to work and somehow I was called Alex. I didn't bother correcting my bus friends at all. One of them did ask why it took me so long to respond once when he was calling my name on the subway and I did get a funny look when I handed my tennis club application to a different guy and it clearly stated my name is Alison.
I kind of thought of it as my alter ego. .."Alex, the bus rider". . Btw I don't live in that area anymore so no more Alex.0 -
I have a slightly unusual first name because of the spelling, but the name itself is relatively common. There's a man who works on my floor who is very polite and likes to greet me by my first name. I gave it to him. He called me by something completely different the first few times so I corrected him. Now the error is minor, it's all variations used with the letters from my name, but never my name. It's been a year . . . do I correct it?
Generally I say no, as they usually figure it out eventually. For example, my first initial and last name smushed together is a womans name, as is my first and second initial smushed in with my last name so sometimes I'll have people call me that instead. Usually they have reason to email me or something else going on that they realize.
So, when someone gets your name wrong repeatedly do you correct it or let it be?
I always say, "When a dog pees on the floor you rub their nose in it."
So, get a dog, wait for it to pee on the floor and then rub this idiot's nose in it. :bigsmile:0 -
Since its been so long, I might just continue to let it slide.
I get called Beth a lot (easily confused with Stef I guess - especially over the phone)...
Best one was when a guy I was working with one day was calling me Jennifer. Not sure how he got Jennifer out of Stefanie .... but I let him call me Jenn all day because I got a kick out of it
HA! That's too funny, I'm also a Stephanie and for some reason when people can't remember my name they resort to Jennifer... there's been at least 3 people who've done that to me before!0 -
My name is very popular where I come from but when I moved to the U.S it been f@#!ked up so badly that I just have people call "Mary" which is my middle name ironically.
Sometimes I have to program my brain to recognize the name cuz I only get called that at work:ohwell:0 -
I've been called Sarah loads of times, usually over the telephone. Where do you get Sarah from Faye, or they ask me to spell my name and then call me Saye, that's not even a name (is it?)0

I feel like most people that you plan on speaking to again would rather be corrected than saying your name wrong and then being embarrassed.
I get my name messed up too, even though it's easy: "Rosa". I get "Rosie", "Rose", etc..
But I mess up people's names too, so I don't think it's really something to be annoyed at. I always ask "Did I have that right?" to be sure, but I think it' a common mistake now that people are getting extra-creative with names. You just never know. Some names are spelled completely different from how they sound, so it's tough for everyone, I think.0 -
My name is so screwed up. Isabella AndersEn. (I'll give you my pin number later.) I am always Isabel AndersOn. People have called me that on the phone, to my face and even in business emails in which my name was spelled out for them. I've also been Isobel, Isabelle, Izabella, Issabell, etc. People call me Izzy or Bella because they cannot bring themselves to pronounce all the syllables. It's gotten so bad that I just ask people to call me Bee now because it's so much freaking easier, but you'd better believe I correct every single person who calls me Isabel. I am a pedantic a-hole, afterall. :laugh:0

My name is Brenda. Few people can mispronounce that one, but I did have a teacher once who called me "Brinda". I corrected her the first time and then just figured she had a speech impediment and let it go. I have routinely been called: LInda, Barbara, Belinda, Melinda, Glenda. I also answer to Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Flanders, neither of which is my last name!
It doesn't really bother me that much. I tend to do the same thing with names. Take, for example, my cats. Chloe answers to Fluffy, Fluffer-Nutter, Peanut Butter, Fluffernutterbuttbuttbutt, and Favorite Fluffy Grey Cat. Misha answers to Meemer, Mimmily Nimmily, Mimmy, Mimsy, and Pest. Katie answers to Katie Bear, Bear Bear, and Fatty. So I guess I can answer to Linda.
Maybe I'm just used to this type of thing. Growing up, neither of my parents could keep us kids straight. My siblings and I were all called AmyBrendaChristaRichard. We all knew which one was REALLY in trouble!0 -
My name is Sandra but I go by Sandi and some people call me cindy if they don't hear me right My last name is very difficult for a lot of people cause it's Hoitsma and they never know how to pronounce it.0
-
I let it be because 95% of the time people spell it wrong.. People say it right, of course, but can never spell it correctly.Oh well, I am used to it.0
-
I correct them once, if they mess up again i no longer speak.0
-
I've gotten lots of names! LOL My name is Jillian not hard at all! I've been called Julian several times, one lady even thought I said Cindy....Really!?! Depending on the person I tend to just let it go, but sometimes I correct them.0

To help lighten the mood. I play soccer on a competitive ladies team. My name is Dawna which is an unusual spelling. My close friends call me "D".
Well we had another girl join the team and her name is Dianne, and all of her friends call her "D".
The girls on the team wittingly put an end to the mix up..... Dianne is called "D" and I am now known as "Double D"...... enough said!!!!! lol0 -
I often get called Jennifer. My name is Jessica. And yes, though I do speak a little fast when answer the phone at work.. tell me, in what universe's language does Jessica sound like Stephanie?0
-
I've been called Anell and Nunnely, both of which are nowhere close to my real name XD. I've given up on correcting people0
-
Vallandingham. That's "Landing" with a "Val" on one end and "Ham" on the other. Very phonetic, but people screw it up in so many ways. The one that boggle me is when people pronounce it VanLandingham. Wher the heck did they get that extra N.
On a side note, usually when I am at a counter and spelling my name out, I invariably get "That's a long one." or "That's a mouthhful." Standard reply is "That's what she said."
LOL!!! Totally love it!! (yeah, I know...that's what she said!)0 -
This is why it irriates me when people spell their kids names all kinds of crazy just to make them different. If you are naming your daughter Jessica, you are hurting no one but her if you spell is Jesikah. She will be forced to correct people. Her entire life. I know, slightly off topic, but for real. Just because it makes sense phonetically does not mean that it makes sense.0

I have a normal name with a strange spelling. Sometimes I correct them, sometimes I don't. Its kind of funny when they get it wrong all the time. My boss when I was 18 never got my name right and it was a great source of amusement for my coworkers lol0
-
I just smile and carry on.
My name is Jackie....I get called everything from Chelsea to Stephanie to Becky ....0 -
I'm Alyssa. And just think how that sounds if you hear that sentence. So I get called Melissa and other mispronunciations all the time. I intermittently correct or don't depending on the circumstances. If I think I'll be talking to them a lot and they ought to learn my name, I'll correct. If it is inconsequential, I won't.0

For me it is the spelling that is more annoying. Everyone is continually spelling my name wrong - even people I have worked with for the last 6 years! So annoying! How can you misspell my name when you are sending an email to me and my name pops up? My name is RIGHT there...lol
I always wonder the same thing! My name is less than an inch away - look there and spell correctly! Especially when my co-workers do it - I've sent you 7,000 emails in the past 4 years all with my name spelled correctly - it's only FOUR letters - how is this hard?!0 -
We go to this sushi bar frequently and really like the chef, he always greets us by name, but I swear he calls my son Taylor. I'm not sure if it's his accent or he thinks my son's name is Taylor (it's actually Tyler).0

Word sista. I absolutely don't get trying to be unique by giving a common name and spelling it jacked. Do they really expect their kid to say "Hi, my name is" ***hands person a sheet of paper with their awesomely spelled name on it***?0 -
My daughters name is Sydney.
She will introduce herself (she is 5) and people will call her Cindy.
She will correct them.
"No.. It's SYD-NEE!!!"
If she can do it, so can you
My Daughters name is Sydney and we go through that as well. I never imagined that when we chose the name. I'm always saying "as in Australia" or "she is not a Brady"0 -
My name is Julene, and you wouldn't believe the names I get!! Most common is Jolene, understandable. I usually just go by Jo and I don't correct, I've found that if people can't or won't pronounce it right after the first couple of tries, they never will.:laugh:0

LOL! My son's name is Julian and he gets called Jillian.0 -
My name is Mary Ann, but when my clients call me they hear will sometimes hear Mary Ellen, Marilyn, Mary and Miriam. Some of the odder "I can tell YOU weren't listening options are Maribeth, Melody, JoAnne, and the list goes on. With them I usually just go about my business and take care of them. With family and friends, they DO get corrected. For 10 years, my cousin's husband called me "Ann" (all of us girls in the family are ALL named Mary as a first name. Some of them go by their middle names, but I don't). For ten years I would tell hime "It's Mary Ann". Finally I had enough, I grabbed his face and yelled "IT'S MARY ANN". Now he calls me by the right name.0

My son's name is Evan and people call him Ivan. Drives him nuts.
