I know that some of you are saying not to weigh but I think that is an impossible situation for me right now. I really use that as motivation and I think my problem is that I'm really looking at the mathematical side of this - I know what I'm taking in, I know what I'm burning, and I feel like that should just be the answer, but I know how body chemistry is so wonky!

I'm going to try and make sure I'm looking at the quality of what I'm eating. There is also a good chance I'm not eating enough- I'm a little under my calorie goal if I add in exercise but I was hoping that was just going to help burn some lbs faster. I'm wrong here, right?
It shouldn't feel impossible to stop weighing yourself every day. You just started here this month so 5 pounds is right on track. One to two pounds per week is all that is recommended. If you insist on weighing daily, you should at least become knowledgeable about why it will fluctuate by several pounds in one day: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/618322-for-all-begginers-why-the-scale-lies-read

If this fluctuation is making you lose motivation, you're in for a very daunting journey. Losing weight takes patience. Not just a little either: tons! There will be times the scale goes up, or it will stay the same. You might give it your all one week and see it go down half a pound, then do barely anything the next week and watch it drop two pounds. You just have to be ready mentally to not focus on that number. Take measurements every month and focus on those. Take pictures when you measure and use those as guidelines. Feel how your clothes fit and the level of energy you have. This isn't a quick process, and if it is, it likely won't stay off.

As for calories, you'll find people split on this topic. With a private diary, no one can really give you advice there. I highly suggest using a site such as http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr or http://scoobysworkshop.com to figure out your BMR, TDEE and the number of calories to eat per day based on your activity level. Eating too little will make you lose, quite possibly even faster, but you'll also be losing muscle which is a bad thing.

When I started this journey, I kept one thing in mind: time is going to pass whether I do something or not. So this time next year you can look back and say you either made changes or you didn't. I might not be exactly the weight I had hoped after almost a year, but I'm not where I was when I started. Be patient, you will get there!
