Im sick of people writing on the forums asking for help and then freaking out and telling you how dumb you are and getting all in a tizzy when people actually give their opinions. If you dont want them, keep your diaries private and dont ask for advice!!!

There are many roads that lead to weight loss and we are all on our own journeys, I think there should be more of a focus on sharing our struggles, frustrations, triumphs, success, helpful tips...etc, than trying to force someone to choose your road.

Maybe just steer clear of some of the forums. For example, this forum, Motivation and Support, is 99% of the time just that. It seems like you will find what you are looking for here without going to some of the other, more argumentative forums.

In my opinion, there is a lot of useful information available on MFP but people need to approach this information with an open mind and not take things personally. In all honesty, MFP is one of the more civil websites out there. There are many more rough and tumble sites than this.

If there was only one way to lose weight, there would be only one diet plan...not hundreds.

If there was only one way to workout, there would not be hundreds of training styles...

What I'm getting at is everyones body is different...their goals and conditioning are different...these all need to be considered.

Theres an old saying..."If you want something done right, go to the experts" Look for the advice of those who have already achieved the results you desire...or look to those in the Fitness Profession. If he or she is 35% bodyfat and spouting tales of what works, don't listen..

Most importantly, toughen up and listen, I have witnessed great advice here....and I have been in this business a long time and talk the talk and walk the walk. I also have answered dozens of email on advice. If you feel bullied, look to your own insecurites.
  • If you ask a question or post something (pretty much anywhere) you're going to get different opinions. Some are more passionate than others about trying to get their point across. I don't think that I've ever read any reply that states it's their way or no way. But then again I'm not as active as a lot of members.
You just have to shrug it off, take what works for you and ignore the rest.

I understand the frustration you feel. It can be difficult reading the forums without emotion. Consider we are all here with a shared motivation and are like minded individuals. Each supported soul will elaborate on what works for them. It's a choice in how one reads the thread. That being said, I'm not dismissing your comments as they are quite relevant and shared by many.

Today is a day we all share a path! The path each person chooses may be a different color but the end result and location is similar. Healthy living for life! Here we come!

This could not be any less true... Maybe the reason some don't get along with others is because they assume "we are all here for the same reason" "we share this journey" etc etc. Not everyone here is to lose weight. Some are here to gain weight, some are using it to track their exercise/strength gains....

Don't take the internet so personally and your life will be a lot better.

agreed! Some use the site to lose weight, others to gain weight, others to increase strength and agility, others to decrease body fat or intake of sugary foods, and the list goes on and on. The shared path is using a tool such as this site to gain what ever phyiscal, or sometimes mind-set, benefits one may desire. It's a path we've chose to take and we've chosen MFP to assist us on this path! :flowerforyou:

I've not been on here long, but I have noticed there are some people with professional experience and knowledge, and some people with personal experience and knowledge, and maybe that's where the issue comes in. If you have found something to work that's fair enough, but if a fitness instructor comes along and gives a professional opinion for the OP as to whether that route is advisable and if not why not, then I also think that's fair enough. They'd be remiss if they didn't surely?

I feel what you're saying - dogmatism in any form is almost never useful.

    However -

There is a LOT of sheer misinformation and snake oil out there regarding diet / fitness. Just because something "works" for you doesn't mean it's healthy or sustainable. Perhaps there are people here who don't present their advice in the most friendly manner possible, but after posting on several fitness forums, the same nonsensical questions/advice/misinformation does become rather tedious.

I wouldn't expect anyone to take my advice on my say-so, since I am not a doctor/fitness expert/nutritionist, so if I do post advice, I will post a couple of links backing up what I say.

If someone comes in posting some nonsense that's been thoroughly debunked before many times over with no other evidence than "I saw it on Dr. Phil!" or wherever else, then they should expect to be umm..."re-educated."

That could probably be a thread in its own right, and may be (I haven't looked)

    Popular Nutrition/Fitness Myths

could include things like 30 day water fasts, spot reducing, "women shouldn't lift heavy weights because they'll look like men" etc.

    :)

Should also say, I think one of the most important things in this type of journey is finding a route that is sustainable for you, so when some of the fitness experts may want people to become fitness mad themselves, they should maybe consider the fact that these people aren't always on that particular journey, they may just want to be healthier and lighter than they are now, as opposed to ripped and beach ready lol :)

You can't count on these message boards for well informed information. Even people that think they are experts, don't know you, or your body, or your history. And in person, they would likely behave differently as well (because they would have more information to work with). Just be glad you have a life outside of these message boards, and enjoy that.

Also, there are a lot of great people on here as well. And I know this has already been said, but just a reminder that not everyone here needs to lose weight.

i think people misuse the term bullying too much these days.

just because you ask for opinions and advice and dont hear exactly what you want to hear, doesnt mean you are being bullied. i have actually BEEN bullied and people disagreeing with you is most certainly NOT bullying. it's called life and acknowledging that you share your world with other people with other people.

noone is entitled to agree with you. a general rule of thumb to go by in life is to not ask for opinions or advice if you arent capable of hearing something you dont like. if you don't want to hear it then ignore it. these are just the interwebs so it's really easy to skip posts or even ignore certain people.

and anyway, who cares if someone is trying to convince you to eat a certain way or lift a certain way? this is just an internet forum. it's not like they are swooping in on zip lines from the ceiling in your real world and forcibly putting heavy weights in your hand or forcing more food in your hand. some of y'all just need more perspective and need to realize your computer is not your real life and if someone on their is pushing your buttons, maybe it's up to you to NOT have the button than to be upset when it gets pushed?

Bullying is often just really an opinion, you can pick or choose what you want to believe or follow, not as if someone is holding a gun to your head. Get over it - get thick skin and quit your whining.

The forums are not just for motivation and support. They are also for information. When people post things that are not simply a matter of opinion, but rather, totally incorrect, there is nothing wrong with pointing that out.

Can people do this in a gentle way? Of course. Do they always? No. I have found, however, that people don't take kindly to being corrected, and will often get angry and defensive.

    Well said!

I've been here awhile now and never seen bullying, ever and I know what bullying is.

But this may be your definition of bullying: there are many roads to weightloss but only one I know of that is healthy.

    1) Eat the right food, eat enough of the right food, and get active/exercise

    :drinker: :drinker:
Okay I don't rant alot but this has really been bothering me.... so here goes!

I joined MFP as a way to track my calories and meet a few like minded people who share my struggles. I did not join MFP to hear the opinions of people who think their way of doing things is the only right way and every other way it worthless. We are all supposed to be adults here. Whenever I go on the forums I try to refrain from commenting on a lot of posts because I have been ripped to shreds and I have seen other people ripped to shreds.

Listen, just because one method of weight loss works for you doesn't mean it will work for everybody. If you think taking protein shakes and lifting weights 4 hours a day is the way to go... more power to you. If you think a strict vegan diet and yoga is the magic formula then by all means, have at it. Whatever your method or philosopy, understand that that is what works for you and your lifestyle. These forums are supposed to be for support and motivation and sometimes I feel like there are a lot of BULLIES on here, who try to shove their opinions down everyone's throat.

There are many roads that lead to weight loss and we are all on our own journeys, I think there should be more of a focus on sharing our struggles, frustrations, triumphs, success, helpful tips...etc, than trying to force someone to choose your road.

my boss just brought me a bowl of homemade guacamole and cucumber slices to dip in it...

    its awesome.

btw question - If youre here to be around people with similar struggles as you, then you can understand that the people that are here because they like to lift four hours a week and drink protein shakes and watch their macros and bond over weights.... are also here to spend time around like minded people. And the same for the vegans. And the same for the ones that start and quit every day. All of them come here and debate situations in order to recognise the people that are like-minded to THEM.

You cant jump in and say - no more socializing anyway but MY way- nicely. not all people are encouraged or motivated by nice. Im sorry :( thats just a fact.

Problem is, there is only one MFP.

This isnt a zoo... where the herbivores are separated from the carnivores and the prey have a petting zoo and the predators are behind glass and the weak are spoonfed the same as the strong. No... MFP is just like the real world. A nature preserve. We're all fenced in here together, just like out there on earth. If you whine or youre lazy or you cant keep up... then they'll attack. But if you just do your own thing instead of complaining about the natural order, and just keep bettering yourself... then you'll be a strong force to be reckoned with yourself.

Just dont forget who the dominant species on this planet is.

Its not bullies. Its not the meek. It aint effing sharks. Its humans. All of us. Some just aren't pulling their 'weight'.

    1. place to express yourself: a medium in which the public may debate an issue or express opinions, e.g. a magazine or newspaper
    2. meeting for discussion: a meeting to discuss matters of general interest
    3. Internet discussion group: an Internet discussion group for participants with common interests

Everyone has equal opportunity to say their piece here. Sometimes, the people that I generally disagree with are the ones I learn the most from. Read what people have to say, skip the stupid ones, research the ideas independently, and try to learn something from everyone. Nobody on here has the power to bully you if you don't let it happen. It's just an internet forum.
