H1N1 shot is made no differently than the seasonal flu shot, just a different strain of virus. If they had been on the ball it could have been included in with the seasonal flu shot thus saving us from getting two shots. I bet they do this next year.

Just got my H1N1 nasal mist vaccine today. The university gave it to all the health science students for free. I'm glad I got there early....there were tons of people! Wahoo for no H1N1...I don't have time to be getting that nasty virus!

Why would a health care professional tell someone to NOT get the vaccine? That is just ludicrous. Unless you have Guillan Barre or are allergic to eggs, there is little risk for getting the shot. You do not get the flu from getting a flu shot, and this H1N1 vaccine is made the exact same way as all the other flu shots (just with different strains). The viruses are dead, and they cannot come back to life in your body. If anything, you might feel a little down because of an immune system response to a foreign particle in the body, which is a good thing and ensures that you won't get the swine flu this year. I know this because I am in medical school and we just learned about this in class.

It is true that people over over 50 I think do not need the shot because they have antibodies from a H1N1 epidemic that happened in the 1920s. H1N1 is not new...the media has just made such a huge deal about it that everyone is now freaking out :grumble:

I am definitely getting the shot...I'm not banking on herd immunity and I don't want to get really sick or die just because I didn't get the shot. Someone in my class has already had it and he was out of class for a week (which is like being out for a month in my class). Please people....get the shot!

The epidemic that happened in the 1920's would make those people well into their 80s. My just turned 56 and he was born in 1953............

So there are people over the age of 50 that need the shot just like the rest of us..........

My doctor told me that the H1N1 virus was last seen in the 70s so if you were around then, you probably have antibodies for it already. The vaccine is more for younger people who have not been exposed because they were not alive in the 70s. Usually, they encourage older and the elderly people to get the flu shots, but in this case they are calling it a young person's flu, because that seems to be who is having the most trouble with it. So he recommended the regular seasonal flu shot for me, which I got. I don't want to get sick, don't have the time.

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc... Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils, mouth & throat.
In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1
in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced:
    1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

    2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

    3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

    4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water.
*Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti to clean nasal cavities, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

    5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

    6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

If you (or your children) are over 49 or under 2 years of age, the shot version of the vaccine is the only option. It does not have live virus in it. Also, those with chronic medical conditions, regardless of age, should only get the injection. My place of employment currently is giving the nasal version to all others. The injection is not yet available. Makes me glad I don't have an option on which to get. I don't like live virus vaccines, even though they are supposed to be more effective. They also generally have a higher risk of adverse reactions in my opinion.

The vaccines are NOT aprpoved by the FDA.
Little testing has been done on the H1N1 vaccine, definately no long term testing.

Why would I want to put a live virus in my system, because the government said so. :noway:

    http://www.naturalnews.com/026473_the_FDA_H1N1_natural_products.html

The message is crystal clear: No product may be described as protecting against or preventing H1N1 infections unless it is approved by the FDA. And which products has the FDA approved? Tamiflu (the anti-viral drug that most people will never have access to), and soon the new H1N1 vaccine that's being manufactured at a cost of one billion dollars (paid to Big Pharma by the taxpayers). This vaccine, of course, will be utterly useless because H1N1 will undoubtedly mutate between now and the time the vaccine is ready, rendering the vaccine useless.

In other words, according to the tyrants at the FDA, the only products that may be marketed alongside the term "H1N1" are those products that either don't work or aren't available to most people. Anything that really works to prevent influenza infections -- such as natural anti-virals, medicinal herbs, etc. -- is banned from even mentioning H1N1 without the threat of being criminally prosecuted.

    http://swineflushot.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/h1n1-vaccine-with-mercury-and-squalene-pushed-on-pregnant-women/
It’s getting crazy out there. New revelations about the novel H1N1 vaccine are raising more questions than ever about its safety while there’s a new drive to push shots of the stuff as quickly as possible on perfectly healthy pregnant women. That means the most vulnerable of all — unborn children — will be exposed to a little-tested vaccine.
To top it off, now comes word out of the FDA’s Vaccine and Related Biologic Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) meeting held on July 23rd that the H1N1 vaccine is going to be laced with the mercury containing preservative thimerosal. That’s right, the same thimerosal that was banned in influenza vaccines in California and several other states starting in 2004. The reason? The mercury-laden toxin has been linked to a number of health concerns — including worries thimerosal caused or contributed to the current autism epidemic.

There are new strands of the flu every year and every year new shots are developed. I don't understand the fear of this one. It's just a new strand of the flu that can spread outside of the usual flu season.

I got the regular flu shot but may not get the H1N1 not because I'm afraid of it, but because the quantities are limited and there are lots of high risk people that need it more than I will. I do want my daughter to get is as she is in one of the risk pools.

Thanks for the advice on the Vitamin C. I think I will buy some and start getting us all to take it.

I was just curious what our US Neighbours were doing as the vaccine is available there already.
I think what concerns me the most is that our children have not been exposed to this flu virus before. I have heard rumors that a version of this virus was going around in the 1980's, has anyone else heard anything to this effect. I tried to google it but couldn't find anything that confirmed this.

I work in the USA in health car in OBSTETRICS--and WE CAN'T GET OUT HANDS ON THE VACCINE where I live! We are now hearing we may not be able to get it until FEBRUARY!! We also have run out of regular vaccine and can't get it! Out of the blue yesterday the hopital sent aroudn a nurse to vaccinate healthcare workerss and Iwas lucky enough to get it---but I don't even know where to send our pregnant girls--and in North Carolina a friend of mine works in ER--they had a 27 year old pregnant girl who died from H1N1--baby lived---funeral was last week. It's not so green either side of the border from the sounds of it---but don't think we have it so easy down here.
By the way Tuscay HEalth Deaprtments give out FREE flu shots and the H1N1 if you are age/medical condition eligible. I understand form my Canadian friends that there are no age restrictions to getting it in Canada---even though you put your seniors on ice floes out ot sea when they are ready to die---lol

pasted from news item in California newspaper:

"Is it safe for a pregnant woman to receive a thimerosal containing vaccine? '

'Thimerosal was removed from all pediatric vaccines in 2001 and since 2004 no pregnant woman in California has received a thimerosal containing vaccine, yet the rate of autism remains unchanged. The original studies that raised questions about the thimerosal-autism link have since been discredited and ten convincing studies have been published in leading medical journals indicating there is no link between vaccines and autism.

Why was the preservative removed if it is safe? Back when the initial concerns were raised, the studies disproving the association between thimerosal and autism had not been performed.

Pregnant women face significant risks if they develop H1N1 influenza. While the California Department of Public Health recommends providers prioritize thimerosal-free H1N1 vaccines for pregnant woman, there is simply not enough to go around. The only way for all pregnant women in California to receive the vaccine is to suspend AB 2943.

All pregnant women are urged to talk with their OB/GYN, certified nurse midwife, or certified midwife" about H1N1 vaccination.

I won't be getting if for the simple reason that i just got over (well still getting over) the swine flu. Myself, my hubby and both my kids had it. Thankfully I am the one that got it the worst. A couple of breathing treatments and some antibotics and i think i'm in the clear.

Thimerosal and the H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccine September 16, 2009

This brings us to the H1N1 vaccine. The H1N1 vaccine that will be released will come in three forms:

The single-dose inactivated (killed) injected vaccine (the one that is already in a single-use syringe) will NOT contain thimerosal.
The inactivated injected vaccine that comes in a multi-dose vial WILL contain thimerosal.
The live attenuated (weakened) vaccine that will be administered intranasally (inhaled) will NOT contain thimerosal.

There are pros and cons to each type of vaccine. Speak to your doctor about which one is right for you and your family members
    .
    .
    .
Therefore, here's the scoop. Your Canadian Government under the power given to it by the Queen of England has approved the Arepanrix™ H1N1 "swine flu" vaccine for rollout across the country (you can read the Arepanrix™ product information leaflet by clicking here). This will be the largest mass vaccination and immunization program in Canadian history.

Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccines Descriptions and Ingredients - FDA

    http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/QuestionsaboutVaccines/ucm186102.htm

According to the FDA there are 4 kinds of vaccines that are being used.
3 INJECTIBLE VACCINES and 1 INTRANASAL VACCINE.

    CSL Limited - Contains Thimerosal
Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics LImited - Contains Thimerosal
Sanofi Pasteur, Inc - Contrains Thimerosal

    Nasal spray
MedImmune LLC. - Contrains the live H1N1 virus.

The single-dose formulation is preservative-free; thimerosal, a mercury derivative, is not used in the manufacturing process for this formulation. The multi-dose formulation contains thimerosal, added as a preservative; each 0.5 mL dose contains 24.5 mcg of mercury.

Why are there preservatives in some vaccines?
Preservatives are added to vaccine formulations filled into multi-dose vials to prevent the growth of bacteria or fungi that may be introduced into the vaccine during its use, e.g., repeated puncture of the vaccine vial.

Why is formaldehyde in some vaccines?
Formaldehyde has a long history of use in the manufacture of certain viral and bacterial vaccines. It is used to inactivate viruses (e.g., influenza, polio) and to detoxify bacterial toxins, such as the toxin used to make diphtheria vaccine. Formaldehyde is diluted during the manufacturing process, but residual quantities of formaldehyde may be found in some current vaccines.

I got the H1N1 nasal vaccine, which is the live virus version. I was worried about taking it but I am a Firefighter/EMT so I think I needed it. It's been a week since I got the vaccine and I still feel good, I hope it actually prevents me from getting H1N1.
