GrammyWhammy - welcome, little lost sheep!
Tunetut - welcome - say you have some great motivation set up for yourself with that bet with your sister to watch kids for the weekend - and the one with your husband for a shopping spree - those are both great rewards! Yeah, those 2 carrots dangling ahead are sweet! Sympathy for your trouble in getting good diet guidelines from your doctors. Does your insurance co. by chance offer any nutritional advice benefits? Some do.... Otherwise, you are listening to your own tastebuds, and stomach, and those advise you well.0 -
@Lauriek70 I'm doing all my classes online, so needless to say I'm sitting on my rump alot. But my kids are starting back to school in 2 weeks and they have a walking track so I plan on hitting it every morning after dropping them off. My husband has a stationary bike that I am going to start using, I don't care for it much but I'm going to suck it up0

Thanks Robin on the late night snacking remedies, I plan on trying it tonight. I just threw away my hidden bag of hershey mini's! As soon as I threw it in the garbage though I had to take the bag out of the house because that was all I could think about. That is so embarassing :frown:0

Hi guys!! Sorry I was MIA yesterday--busy morning, then went out with a friend and didn't get home until late Didn't even log my calories from yesterday until this morning. FYI--not a good plan. :blushing: I was way over, but I will make up for it today.
@robin--I like the idea of including the screen name so people have an easier time remembering who's who--especially if the name is completely different. For example, it's probably not confusing to use "kaye" for "grandmakaye," but when you guys respond to "karen" instead of "skinny" I bet that makes the newlings wonder "who the heck is karen?" So I will try to remember to include both names.
And, yes, I'm getting ready for school--though it makes me a bit cranky to think about it. :grumble: I spent part of yesterday afternoon working on updating some of the journal questions for my AP Lit class. Last year we caught many students plagiarizing from sparknotes and similar internet sites when writing their journals. It's very hard to teach kids how to use those sites in an appropriate way. We don't want to tell them to NOT use them--that's just not realistic, and sometimes they are a valuable resource. However, students need to learn how to sift through and really scrutinize what they read on those sites.
Therefore, this year we are including some of the analysis in the questions and asking them to support or refute the internet analysis. So instead of asking "What is the overall tone of The Awakening? Support with the text" the question will read "Sparknotes.com describes the tone of The Awakening as 'objective.' Support or refute this tone with examples from the text." Thus, they will realize it's not necessarily correct, and they need to use their own knowledge of the the text to decide. Added bonus--it will show them that their teachers read all of those sites, so they shoudn't plagiarize!!
@marsha (grammywhammy)--good to see you back!! You know you always have a place in our herd. :flowerforyou:
@fera--any word on when you will be relocating to IN?
@laurie--that's awesome that your neighbor teaches paddle-boarding! It's supposed to be great for your core.
@teresa--thanks! I started out walking and doing the elliptical to build up endurance. Then I did c25k. It only took me about 6 weeks to get to the point where I could run a full 5k, but it was at a really slow pace. Like the kind of pace the treadmill still considers 'walking.' I've since been gradually working on increasing my speed, but it's a very slow process--mostly b/c I'm not very disciplined in my training schedule. I get too bored if I only focus on one form of cardio. It's probably better for my overall fitness to do many forms of exercise, but my improvements in one specific exercise come very slowly.
@aimee--I also liked your post.
Lots of newling--welcome to all! :flowerforyou:
Saturday Success:
My success is that on Friday I made up for that huge overage I had on Thursday. I was over again yesterday (though not by as much), but I will make up for it today.
Sunday Share:
For the newlings, I am karen, and though my full screen name is skinnyjeanzbound, most folks here just call me "skinny" which makes me laugh b/c I'm not. However, I'm a lot closer to skinny that I was when I started here 3 years ago. I lost the first 40 lbs pretty steadily in the course of the first year or so. Since then, things have gone much more slowly--not necessarily a bad thing as it's more likely to stay off that way, but it can be very frustrating. :grumble: Now I'm still hovering in the mid-180s with no luck seeing the 170s. It seems like every time I get close, I allow myself to get sidetracked by something.
This summer, I'm trying to focus more on some running goals. I have a 5k here in Chicago in a few weeks. I do it every year, so it would be nice to beat my previous time of 36:06. Also, I want to really enjoy the Tunnel 2 Towers 5k I'm doing in NYC with laurie and susan this September. I'm not really worried about my time for that race, but I want to have fun which for me means pacing myself so I don't get too winded too early.

WOW! Now those are wise words to live (and diet) by.0 -
Hi everyone! This is actually my first post to MFP so hopefully I do okay. I'm taking the advice of the first post and using Sunday as a sharing day.
My name is Megan, I'm 24 and I'm a Canadian living in Wales with my husband. My overall goal right now is to lose 104 lbs total (although I may increase the amount I want to lose if it is feasible at that time as I could lose another 20 lbs before being considered "underweight" BMI-wise).
While I've lost ~25 lbs since I joined mid-May this year but my BMI means I'm still medically considered obese. Right now I'm a little discouraged because although I'm still following the MFP guidelines as I was when I started my weight loss is plateauing a bit.
I'm not really sure what else to write - I'm looking for positive people to be friends with on this site. I'm a big geek (fantasy, sci fi, videogames, books, you name it  ) and I'd eventually like to go to school for Pharmacy. Nice to meet everyone! :flowerforyou:0 -
My Sunday share:
Let me see....y'all already know my name. I don't remember if I shared details so I'm going to do it now. Forgive me if this is a repeat:
I'm 43 years old and live in Western New York (near Niagara Falls). I've been married for almost 20 years to Raymond. He's a truck driver who is never home. (Perfect marriage that is far from perfect). My daughter, Phoebe, is going to b a senior in high school this year and my son, Jackson, is going to be a sophomore. My son Noah James is my Angel in Heaven. We also have two dogs. Sophia Loren is my husband's chihuahua and Audrey Hepburn is my black lab (she's my baby).
I work for New York State in a local county courthouse. I have a fancy title which is long for secretary. I love my job. I work in the criminal division, which is very interesting. We have a murder trial starting soon. I've been there for 4 1/2 years. It's a good gig.
I am learning to enjoy cooking now that I'm working on eating healthier. Right now I have a new recipe brewing in the crock pot. Hopefully it'll taste as good as it sounds. I love to buy cookbooks from the used book store and tear out the recipes I think I'll like. I put those recipes in a photo album and give the rest of the recipe book to a friend at work to use.
I am a bit on the crafty side - mostly I make jewelry but I also dabble a little in paper crafts like making greeting cards. It's my relaxation. I used to be very much into scrapbooking but the older my children got, the less they liked to pose for pictures so jewelry making took over.
I can't think of anything else. Well....there's more but it's boring so I'll skip that part.0 -
Tunetut- If you are struggling with what to eat, it could be helpful to see a nutrition specialist....I know that insurance may not cover it, though. My husband has struggled with his weight his entire life. He asked to be referred to a nutritionist or something many years ago, and the doctor was happy to do it, but the insurance was not. So, we never went. Finally, once my husband got to the point of being diagnosed with prediabetes, THEN the insurance covered twice yearly visits with an RN specialist, specializing in nutrition. Yeesh. Anyway, once he started seeing her (and I went along for a couple visits so far), he is getting a better idea of what healthy eating is, and I am getting a better idea of what he needs to eat for his various conditions. It was a blessing.
Whatever you end up doing, I think it's a good idea to make sure it's something you will be able to do for the rest of your life. And, of course, one small change at a time. If you try to change too much at once, you are likely to get overwhelmed and give up.
GrammyWhammy- Welcome back!
Kaye- Good job remembering your pedometer...so many miles of sawdust to go! I have to go home after work this afternoon and get started on my pile of laundry. I definitely wouldn't want to have to lug it around from house to house....laundry is tedious enough as it is! Hope your washer fix is a quick one once they get the part!
Robin- Your post about giving 100% of your focus to one thing at a time rings a bit true to me, too. I think it's just very difficult to achieve a good balance. Keep working toward keeping an eye on all aspects of your mental, physical and spiritual life! I hope the kayaking trip happens for you!
Tanya- Hope your sore feet are releaved by the insoles soon!
Laurie- Thanks for the Bonus Challenge! I will try to get in a couple walks on my lunch hour this week.
ForeverDanielle- I think playing with your kids is a great goal to work toward! Welcome!
AFM- I'm in the middle of a 12 day work week...ugh. I do the schedule at work, so I have only myself to blame, too. Well, if we had enough staff, I wouldn't be working every day. I do have some hope that we may be hiring someone soon that will be a great fit for us. I hope it happens!
I overslept this morning, so I will have to try and get my long run in some time this afternoon or evening. Wah! It will either be hot and humid, or I'll have to deal with evening bugs. Boo. Darn you, cozy bed!
Sunday Share: My name is Amanda. I'm 34, married with two kids, a girl and a boy, ages *almost* 7 and 5. Trying to lose 120 lbs, and I'm almost 40 lbs gone in the last year and a half. I just keep it simple. Eat less, move more....drink more water, eat more unprocessed foods, eat less junk/fast foods, cook more at home. My exercise of choice is to run or bike or walk. I also lift weights and have started throwing in some 30 Day Shred once in a while. I'm training for a half-marathon which is coming up in September.

@foreverdaniel - walking the track after I drop the kids off for school is my goal this year too. I'm hoping that since I'm already there it will motivate me to get going.
@hansea47 - I have actually asked repeatedly over the years to be sent to one. In fact, it's the first thing I ask when I start seeing a new doc, the first time I asked - my former dr started talking about puttin me on metformin or that "legal speed" pill saying those would be the best bet to get me kick started. Frankly I feel that pills are not the answer so I switched drs. The 2nd one gave me his excuse proof diet....which was a joke..I suffer from extreme high blood pressure and thanks to preeclampsia and toxicemia with my 1st born - I also suffer severe putting edema and vasculitis....I would assume that all the sodium in the diet plan he gave me would only reek havoc on those conditions..unfortunately we just do not have very good doctors around here and so I'm trying to just read up about it all online. The hungry diet really helped me to just how many calories I was actually eating and how seldom I ate in the day....it gave me a head start into figuring out the best meal plan. I definately want to find something that suits me and something that I will stick too. I try not to down myself when I slip (like the 2 fries I snagged from my daughter's plate last night) and try to remind myself that I need to eat frequently throughout the day...small meals and snacks. In previous years, I was notorious for skipping breakfast or lunch or both and then finding myself starving and binge eating at dinner.
@robinsegg - I have no idea if it's covered or not. I told my husband, however, that if I keep struggling trying to get it all figured out that I would just locate one and make an appt myself and pay out of pocket.0 -
Just popping in very quickly. I am going out for girls night out after a family dinner.
Today, I walked twice once around a park this morning and then at the gym this afternoon. I also ran 1 mile.
Karen- I am also hoping to do well with the run in NY. I need to find a practice run so I am not totally winded at the NY event.
Little Shadow-Congrats on meeting your goal. :drinker:
The bonus challenge- Take the extra walk or whatever you decide to do and multiply it by 2. So if you walked 1.5 miles make it 3- that's where the bonus comes in.  :bigsmile:0 -
Sunday Share: We were camping this weekend, hence my absence lately. It was a lovely little vacation. My stomach has never been angrier with me. Saturday morning I woke up feeling very nauseous and bloated, and my whole stomach was sore. I chalked it up to all the ab work I did when DH and I lifted on Wednesday. It is feeling much less sore now, but now I am having internal tummy issues. I am starting a 30 day clean eating challenge tomorrow, and I've decided to cut out dairy to see if this helps my stomach at all. I have lactose issues, and sometimes I have to be really careful about going overboard.
I am hoping to get back to running this week. Nothing got put into MFP this weekend because I've been eating and drinking everything I can get my hands on. This challenge will be a nice reset.0 -
enjoying reading the posts and getting to know you guys. I am mid fifties/divorced w one daughter, and a daughter who is an angel. I also have 2 beautiful grandbabies. I work full time at 2 jobs. my days are full /I love reading spending time w family going to the beach when I can. getting ready for a florida trip w my sister and our grandchildren. woo hoo lets see how that pans out. I am sad though that my goal to be able to ride rides w my gdaughter will probably not work out. I am too big to fit most rides, but that is ok, I will go and enjoy our time together, and it will renew my commitment to lose this weight. have a blessed sunday everyone.0

Hello to regulars and welcome newbies!! :flowerforyou:
Not much time today because hubby will soon declare it is TV watching time! I did my Sunday morning weigh-in and was up .7lbs. I'm three weeks late for my cycle (not pregnant just pre-menopausal) :ohwell: I'm not letting it get to me since I know that my eating and exercise have been fairly consistent.
Sunday share: My name is Teresa, but my husband calls me Pita. Yes it stands for pain in the a**. He gave me the nickname on the first day we started chatting online, which was April 20, 2005. When we met he was newly divorced and my divorce was in process. He was fun to chat with and even though he is 23 years older than me we had a lot in common. We really weren't looking for romance but our chemistry was instant. It took 10 months for us to get together. We had never met face to face until the day he picked me up at my sister's house on my 40th birthday. I moved in him with right away and my 14-year old daughter joined us 3 months later. He is the love of my life and there is no doubt in our minds that God brought us together. This October we will celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary. He supports me in every, single way imaginable. It is my biggest prayer and dream to show him a fit and healthy wife. I deserve it and he totally deserves it!!
TV time! :happy:0 -
I completed the bonus challenge today. I was waiting around all morning for my BF to wake up (he worked until 3:30am) so we could go for our bike ride/geocaching, then decided I might as well get a walk in too. I walked down to the end of my road and back which took me 50 min... Man was it hot out!

Evening all! Welcome to all the newlings and hello to everyone!
I'm feeling a wee bit frustrated. I have to stay off my bad foot a while and let it heal. I got too overzealous in power-walking and undid all the healing that had happened before. This will not go over well. I cannot stand staying still for very long, anymore! I'll try my best to pretend to be sane, but I won't claim to enjoy it. Job search has yet to have any results and I'm getting increasingly anxious as the days go by.
I'm bringing myself back to disciplined eating again and have managed to thankfully not gain back any of the pounds I've lost, so far. So there is that. :laugh:0 -
teresa - your love story is so romantic - - -sigh --
aprilshowers - boy your life sounds full - esp. managing two jobs before getting to enjoy such a lovely family. Do enjoy your upcoming vacation. I just got to ride my first park ride this summer - it was scary but such an accompishment. It won't be to long a wait for you - you will succeed - hope you give it a try while there! :flowerforyou:
ebailey - abwork or tummy problems - no matter the cause, it does not sound pleasant. Say, did your planned meals turn out well? Was the weather nice?
tunetut - I read your post and just had to shake my head - oh how frustrating :noway:
Pamella - I have a lot of interesst like you - just that I don't follow up on a lot of them Want to learn to make greeting cards, but want to come up with my own sentiments and thats where I stump myself . I to tear out pages that I'mi interested in and put them in a binder - don't keep the whole book. Pass it on - great idea . Loved used book stores. Such a cool atmosphere. Also use the phrase I've got a good gig  to describe my life.
Vivsexsymbol - welcome to this community thread. Happy to have you join us! We've had people from all around the world participate here. 25 pounds is GREAT progress since May - plateauing however is so darn frustrating.
Being a big geek you will find friends plenty here. I definitely know one gal is a big gamer -video - here, just blanking on her name right now! I love sci-fi, books, and have pharmacy experience- so welcome friend!
Lives2Travel - wow you said it - powerful quote :
"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying I will try again tomorrow".
Skinny - it is so exciting to think that you, Laurie and Susan and other people all met through this thread and are meeting in NYC for a joint run at the TUNNEL TO TOWERS RACE - that is such a tribute to that special sacred place from 9/11 and also your commitment to your health and your journey to a new you.
SUNDAY SHARE - Hi, I'm Ellen and I am 63 and live in beautiful midwest Omaha, Nebraska, home of Warren Buffet and the College World Series.Come and visit sometime! I've been married twice, tho no kids, which I miss in my life but accept.
I did lose a great deal of weight following basic guidelines and using weights and gentlly walking and swimming. However, I was waylaid with several health problems in a row and my weight bounced back up less 30 lbs. Am back in control again, but now fighting some drugs that make it hard to lose more than a pound a month.
I started my journey 4 years ago. I started off quite well with the assistance of people I met through starting this thread sort of accidently - when I introduced myself, a group of like-minded people joined in and eventually we settled on a format and it kept growing and changing until it became this version and popular vote still rules the day.0 -
My Sunday Share...Hi everyone! I have enjoyed reading everyone's stories. My name is Danielle, I'm married with 2 children. At 32 years old I am weighing a hefty 253  I think what really gets me is that I have lost the weight before and I felt amazing and I also swore to myself that I would never let myself get back this way but here I am. Of course it was alot easier back then when I was younger. My goal weight is 140, I have been there and it suits me well. It just seems so far away, so I'm just trying to take baby steps and not focus on just that one number. I am an extreme emotional eater. One of my biggest fears is that my children will have to go through what I have with my weight, my husband and I do try to control what they eat and explain to them the importance of staying healthy. Because of my weight I have become depressed, some days are good and some days are bad. I feel like there is this person inside of me that wants so desperately to get out, I literally feel trapped inside my body. There is so much more to me than just my appearance but I feel thats all people see is my (fatness). I want to be able to love myself again that way I can be a better wife and a better mother.0

Mileage for 7/27: 2.8 walking.
Made a very frustrating discovery this afternoon. Someone tried to do a lot of traveling at my expense. They attempted to charge $10,000 of tickets at United Airlines on my credit card. Fortunately, the safe guards at the bank worked and they were stopped. Its scary, and I will have to spend some time at the bank tomorrow to straighten up the mess.
Oh, well. Onward and downward. Kaye0 -
Good morning everyone.
Today's Reason to Celebrate
July 28, 2014 is National Milk Chocolate Day
Chocoholics unite—it’s National Milk Chocolate Day!
How is milk chocolate different from other chocolates? It's a mix of cocoa solid and either dry or condensed milk. While dark chocolate is traditionally used as a baking ingredient, this sweet treat is used to make chocolate candy bars, hot chocolate, and many delicious desserts.
Did you know that chocolate actually has mood-enhancing benefits? That’s right—chocolate can make you happy! This is due to the fact that it contains a stimulant called theobromine and a compound called anandamide. Now that’s a reason to celebrate!
Today, enjoy milk chocolate your favorite way. Happy Milk Chocolate Day!

Just checking in... I fell behind on posts again over the weekend because I get lazy.....no excuses just the truth. I did however walk 5-6 miles both days.0
-
Happy Monday! (not really). Just checking in. Got no sleep on Friday night so spend most of Saturday doing absolutely nothing. Yesterday got out did the shopping for the week and general household work. Got a workout yesterday scrubbing the shower so I guess that's better than nothing.0

Good afternoon, i would like to join this thred, I have started over again to many times and can use all the support that I can get!! ~Emily0
-
Please add me on this thread0
-
els312 - Emily - welcome! - you'll find plenty of support and encouragement here!
Kaye - what a dreadful thing to happen with the credit card attempted use - augh! Over 10 grand! Glad your bank stopped it in advance so you don't have to untangle that type of mess. It is scary to think about. I need to set up an on-line access to my credit card so I can check the balance each day - that would be the smartest thing to do, since I use it for all my monthly expenses to get frequent flyer miles. I do check my banking balances every day. I'm neglectful not checking my CC balances - now that you've shown me how scary and risky it is, I'm will reform my ways!
helenarriaza - hey you already joined just by posting - see page one for all info related to the goals of this thread - also it contains helpful info for losing weight
AFM: Lovely day - temps have dropped from really hot days to more temperate so I hope that this nice weather will head to you folks on the east coast too. On my north facing deck: Lately plants on deck have been moaning and groaning - too much heat. Even my pansies which had made it this far, finally gave up the ghost.Peach Begonias continue to surprise me with their gorgeous blossoms as well as purple torenia next to them. The Christmas cactus has a sunburn. The vines -morning glory = have yet to bloom, but their height is impressive.0 -
Good morning everyone. I hope all is going well on this monday morning for all of you. I got up and putzed around the computer for a little while and then got my butt in gear and did the workout I planned out. It actually felt really good. I am going to do this workout every other day since a lot of it is hand weights and I know you have to rest in between workouts. I also went and shot hoops with my son yesterday. It was okay with the foot since I mostly just shot the ball and didnt move around to much. I am going to record everyhting I do to have a record but am still going to try and stick in my daily allotment for calories until I can start some real cardio again. I have to start over on my challenge to get 7 days in a row under since this weekend went way south with food. I am determined to get it this week:happy:
Welcome to all the wonderful new faces I have seen on here the last couple of days. You have found a truly great group of people.
Kaye that is super scary about your credit card. I am so happy your bank caught it before it could go through.
Well everyone have a great start to this week. Lets get out there and kill it this time :flowerforyou: :drinker:0 -
ebailey: I hope your tummy feels better! I find that after a tough ab exercise day, eating light and clean helps a little.
teresa: I love reading about you and your hubby. I met my boyfriend online as well, now we're getting our first place together! It's really exciting!
foreverdaniel: Welcome! I can definitely relate to the feeling of being trapped. For me, once the weight started coming off, I saw it as a natural anti-depressant. I hope the same happens for you!
grandmakaye: I'm REALLY happy they caught the fraud! People sicken me. I see people come to my library all the time who want to send their information away for "free" winnings. They're all being scammed. It's a scary world we live in!
mnwalkingqueen: Way to go on 5-6 miles both days!
beachgirl: I HATE scrubbing the shower. At least it was a workout!
robin: I had no idea cacti could get sunburn!!
jtconst: You've got this. It's pretty awesome that you went out and played with your son. I remember the first time I could go play outside and not get winded!
Welcome to all of our newcomers!
AFM:
I'm Aimee. 24 years old from Ohio. Librarian and food-loving dieter. I've got a boyfriend who has also lost about a hundred and some odd pounds. I've been here for almost a year, and I'm still plugging away at my goal. I've lost 120 so far, and have about 35 more to go. I get bored with the same shares so here's some you may not have heard before...
1. I was raised on a dairy farm, and I have ridden a cow.
2. I believe garlic is the best seasoning you can use in almost any dish.
3. My bf's nickname for me is Dove.
4. I like to knit, but I can only make scarves because I can't read the patterns.
5. I am a grammar nazi. An English degree will do that to you. Fortunately, I'm able to hide it fairly well.
Aaron and I found our apartment. We're going to apply this week, and hopefully move in at the beginning of September. YAY!
We also went shopping this weekend. I was really surprised to see that I could fit in a size LARGE dress, and a size MEDIUM shirt! While the medium is a little tight, and I'll hold off on those for another 10-15 pounds, it was a really pleasant surprise. I've gone from a tight xxl and tight size 24 pants to a comfortable size large and size 12 pants.
I ate terribly this weekend. Not in the way that I feel bloated. I just snacked a lot, surprisingly I haven't gained from my snacking. I know I need to make better choices snack-wise, but I'm not going to be too hard on myself over it.0 -
