@griffinsaundra2 I am at the fighting with insurance stage of bariatric surgery. I went to an informational presentation and decided it was worth exploring for me. The "for me part" is important. I lost and gained always gaining more than i lost. I had to meet with a dietitian and a doctor monthly for 6 months and satisfy many conditions. At the end it was my choice. Continue as I was, medical (drugs), surgical or nothing at all. I have lost 45 pounds I have 110 to go. I need to do it for me. No one else got a vote. No opinion polling. ME.
I've totally stalled at this weight. I'm a 6 foot tall 290 lb 52 year old man. I eat 1600 calories a day and walk 15-20 miles a week. I need help and the sleeve was my choice. I have researched and gone to support group meetings met people with good and bad experiences. But it is my choice. If you decide it's for you do it. If not, please do something! This is a great group for support (and venting). Never a discouraging word. Good luck and log your food. It will show you what your doing right and where you are adding calories, time of day or what you are really eating calorically. It won't fix anything, that's on you, but it will help with the what the problems are. If you want more info I'll share my thoughts.1 -
pneschich - Good for you. My neighborhood had excellent results with the sleeve and has pretty much kept his weight off. He eats sugar and drinks but still keeps his weight off. I want to give this all my effort before I resort to that, but am happy for your decision.
Last week I lost 12 lbs but gained back for total lost of 8. This week has not been good.
I am struggling to get back on track. Need to do that before Thanksgiving. Too much to to do and tired most of the time. Contributes to overeating

Friday Fitness ... gonna use the warm day we are scheduled to give the grass a last cut before the snow starts to blow.
Yesterday I cooked a dish that my mom used to make for us - Rissoles. It was the anniversary of my dad's birthday and I was feeling blue missing him and my mom, and all those who where the foundation in my relationships who are now gone from this earth. That dish came out perfect! My dad would have eaten of it gladly, and my mom would have been proud of my culinary skill. The dish is like a little personal meatloaf patty and each piece is weight measured before it's shaped and cooked. 75 grams per each, raw, and of that 60% is meat and the rest is other ingredients. There would have been too many Rissoles so I only made 11, then used the rest of the meat mixture to make a dozen 50 gram meatballs that I simmered in homemade Marinara sauce.
The cataract surgery went really well and I am amazed at how much better my vision is. The second surgery is scheduled for next week. Thanks to those who expressed best wishes for the surgery success.
I've been 'off the computer', somewhat, during the week as planned, but not enough. Feel like I am headed in the right direction of breaking this habit of too much PC-time; but it feels weird not to come to this thread every day and share my journey. Still ... I'll say the same as last time ... 'See ya when I see you', but will also add ... Thanksgiving is a time of giving thanks for our many blessings and of cream pies, so go heavy on recalling the blessings and light on the pie.2 -
Very early flight tomorrow morning, so I need to get in bed, but I just wanted to say @Nikion901 I'm so pleased your surgery went well and that you are seeing better! See a little for me too! LOL
@KATRENAJ- I passed on the surgery too. I knew that it would not keep me from overeating afterwards and so I'm doing it the old fashioned way, eat less, move more! So far it's working pretty well. I'm down 45 pounds since May. I still have sixty to go just to get in onederland, and then another 50 or so to goal and I'm very committed and sure that I will get it done. Surgery has saved many lives and I don't look down on anyone who chooses that path. We all have to make our own decisions, and then the rest support us in what is right for us! It's a great group here.

Hi! I'm new to the thread! I have 150 pounds to lose. I've been sticking around 290 for over a year so my big goal 10% loss is 260. Activity is very limited I cannot walk that far or do much. I have done some arm chair exercises on my bed, so I'd like to keep doing those, please encourage me. Plan is to follow an exchange diet but haven't had much luck so far. I need time to plan without 18,000 interruptions! Nice to meet you all!2

Welcome @riceflourde. Your stats are very similar to mine: I started at 292, am currently at 265 and my final goal is 169 (I'm 5' 9", used to be 5' 11") and 56 years old (female). Been working on weight loss since 9/1/16, and following some advice from others on MFP, I set as many mini-goals as I can, since 292 to 169 is a LONG way. My first mini-goal was 5% of body weight, then BMI change from class III to class II obesity, now headed for 10% of body weight in a few more pounds.
I hate, hate, hate to exercise, so other than my normal day to day activity (which is mostly sedentary), I've been working on the "calories in" piece first. I know I will need to add exercise at some point, but for now I have been eating lots of lean protein (white meat chicken, tofu), eggs, and essentially no refined carbs. I'm lucky because I like veggies and don't have a sweet tooth. The biggest problem for me is feeling full, so I'm tending towards 4 - 5 smaller meals/big snacks so that I never get to the point where I feel like I could eat everything in the refrigerator.

To the others on this board, I'm flying to FL later today to visit my mother for a week. My husband is coming with me, so I will be providing caregiving services to him, and (I'm sure) running lots of errands, helping out with Mom, but I'm hoping that my work schedule will be very slow (so far I only have to participate in a couple of conference calls) since I am technically taking vacation days Monday - Wednesday. I will be logging faithfully but may or may not be posting (since these trips to FL tend to be even busier than my normal home life somtimes). So, I wish a truly happy Thanksgiving to everyone in advance. I for one am thankful that I found MFP and this group (in addition to lots of other things).4 -
Hi I'm 43 and also have to loose a lot of weight and exercise more and I would love to have friends in a similar situation so that we can motivate each other. Sunday Share ... Calories and weight loss ...
In doing some spreadsheet work yesterday, I wanted to verify my estimated caloric need for maintenance as well weight-loss and stumbled across a BMR/TDEE calculator I haven't seen before, so natch', I had to plug in some data to run 'tests'. The results I got weren't really any different than I'd found on other sites over the last several years. One thing, however, did ring bells in my belfry.
This calculator required a goal weight as part of the info for the calculation then provided the BMR and TDEE to targets to reach my goal as well as how long and the date my target would be reached. Of course, this is assuming my caloric input and output stayed within target. I chose several different deficits: none, 10%, 20%. I also ran a calc to maintain my desired weight for comparison. It was a fun mental exercise to do. It also pointed out that weight loss is not a fast process. The site I used is found at .. MyTDEE.com
And now I know that, at least for me, It will take me about 5 years to get to where I want to be weight-wise.
I've heard and read many times in the past, and today I think it's worth repeating once again ...
1 ... You didn't gain it quickly (years, at about 10-20 pounds per year) and you won't lose it quickly either.
2 ... It's all about Calories-in and Calories-out. (You need your NET calories to be at a deficit of what you need to stay the same.)
3 ... Your plan has to be something you can maintain indefinitely, perhaps for the rest of your life, so don't make it too aggressive. Slow and steady, in weight loss, is what wins the race.
4 ... As your weight goes down (and your age goes up), you need less calories than before just to stay the same.

Sunday Share: I've been in a bad funk all week. I'm struggling to figure out what I want to do with my life job wise, whether I want to go back to school to become a teacher or if I want to leave education and use my degree I actually have. Instead of figuring it out, I've kinda just shut down and have spent my weekend sitting around doing nothing, eating junk, and being blah. I wish life was easier to figure out!2

@Heathermetoo I think the best plan is actually leftover management. Even if you just stuff yourself, there's a fundamental limit to your capacity on one day. But if you stretch those fatty or carby leftovers over the next week, then it becomes real problem.
I'm solving that by skipping turkey in favor of deli ham, a baked sweet potato, a big spinach salad, and the real indulgence, chile con queso with tortilla chips for afternoon snacking.
Monday check in- I've been gone several weeks, mostly because I pulled a muscle in my hip, which meant I wasn't going to the gym, which meant I didn't have any food discipline, and I didn't want to talk about it. (and I always get moody during November). But always and again, back on the horse.1 -
Monday check in. I'm not doing what I need to do and I'm making excuses. I still feel lost, in limbo, waiting for a surgery approval. Had a bad weekend flu like symptoms but mild. Wife had a horrible migraine and cried in the dark all weekend. Ate poorly no exercise . I've got to focus on the things I have control over. Diet exercises and myself. The rest will take care of itself in time. Easier said than done!2

You can do it man. I was as goin through tuff times when I first tried to lose weight I'm only 21 an weighed 390 in mid June an gave up on losing weight. I decided to try again mid July an I have been pretty sucessful I've lost 119 lbs. So I believe if I can do it anyone can. I ain't very good sayin these kinds of things but I hoped this helped a little!2 -

This is probably horrible but one way I manage thanksgiving is managing how long I'm at my mom's house. I don't leave home until Wednesday afternoon and we come back Saturday. I can't go for a full uncontrollable week. There is just too much food, too much snacking, and too much dessert.
My plan while I'm there is to remember that it's about family and not food. Thanksgiving dinner is just one dinner not a week long binge fest. As long as I can hold to that and track during the weekend I'll stay on track with my Holliday goal; get under 200 and stay there until January. I've accomplished step one and I've been good with part two. There are days I bounce above and then I work back down. I'm good with that. My plan will make sure I don't gain the typical holiday 15 this year!1 -

I know for most people this week's goals are all about Thanksgiving and not overeating on all that holiday food. That's not going to be an issue for me as I'm not going to be a guest nor am I inviting any to my home ...
This is be the first Thanksgiving in several years where it's not a holiday feast occasion for me. I do have a small (11 lb) turkey in the freezer, and my plan is to prepare it sometime before the New Year, but probably not until the small freezer on my fridge has been cleared up of other stores. Then I'll make some of my favorites to enjoy as prepackaged dinner plates (they take up a lot of freezer room). For this week's holiday dinner I'm actually planning on having a steak and broccoli stir-fry served with cauliflower rice, and a fruit Kissel pudding for dessert.1 -

My point being, 'son', don't give up on your efforts. just slow them down a little ...you have already made great strides in your first year of active weight loss efforts. Just focus on maintaining your weight until the end of the year and then start with a new concerted effort after you have learned how to stay at your current lower weight. It takes time to lose weight .... it's harder to lose it than to gain it .... Happy Thanksgiving.1 -
@Nikion901 I think my problem is goals and accountability. I had a fixed goal, complete my program schedule the surgery. My accountability was external to me, monthly appointments, with consequences. I'm currently having and have typically had difficulty with self accountability. I haven't done anything stupid crazy and have maintained my weight. I'm struggling with foot pain and an inability to walk. I can't seem to force myself into the gym even though I've got a plan and the time. Just lack the willpower to overcome the fear inertia. Silly for a grown man but it is what it is.2

You dont have to workout in a gym. What do you like doing? Kayka? Walk the beach? Basketball with kids? There's a million activites! Be accountable to us. We are watching. If you cant make it, then I certainly cannot. Thanks for being my inspiration and keeping it real.1

@MermaidPrincessRach ... sometimes when a person has pain it's very hard to do anything physical that makes that pain go 'ouch' ... I have a very bad back and years of babying it have resulted in less inability and more pain! ... Now I have bad knees and bad feet ... meaning they hurt a lot and sometimes I need to use a wheeled walker or a cane, even in the house to get from one room to the other. Most days I need to 'hang on' to the walks or furniture to help me get from the bed to the bathroom and back again ... I swear I know how many mini steps it takes to go from point A to point B with my eyes closed! ... I think you know all about pain and how debilitating it can be. ...
BUT ... one think I have learned is that the pain usually feels better if I can make myself do some activity with it. If it hurts to stand, I can do some movements laying on the bed or sitting in a chair. They don't feel like 'real' exercise because I'm not puffing on a treadmill, lifting heavy weights, or huffing up a hill on a long walk ... but they do work my muscles and ligaments. And they do burn more calories than just sitting there!
There are wonderful exercises on YouTube for anyone who needs to do them sitting down. And believe me, after a 30 minute session following along, i do get a workout! ... the problem I have is making certain that I do them! ...
So, @pneschich , I also have a problem with goals and accountability .... I can make the goals, but I don't follow through nearly often enough! ... Case in point ... I have a goal of eating up to 1660 calories a day ... and as of yesterday, which was day 326, I have only only 141 days ... and that's only about 43% of the time ... still had I not tried I probably would have overeaten on all of the days.1 -

@Nikion901 I like a target. Even if it's going to be difficult to hit. I like black and white outcomes. Success or failure. I think that is my problem now. An unsatisfactory outcome, kind of mushy as outcomes go.
Trying to unwind. Brain won't stop. I just got home from the hospital my mother in law fell and broke the head of her femur. Wife is staying the night with her. Tomorrow she will get transferred to MD Anderson in Houston for an eventual hip replacement. Please keep her in your prayers. Not going to be the holiday we planned on having we will all still have each other and for that we will give thanks.0 -
@pneschich I'm sorry about your mil's hip and the stress it is causing your family. Coincidentally, my oldest sister is one of the many people who design and test replacement hips. I am so proud of her! Anywho...
I am so excited for Thanksgiving ... Really craving that stuffing! Thanksgiving is the only day I get it because 1) its not healthy to me, 2) I tend to eat too much of it and too quickly, and 3) my husband doesnt like it so... I went a little carb crazy last night ... Crackers (and a little cheese) for dinner!?
A friend told me, "Don't try to be good; Try to be better than before" I don't think weightloss can be black n' white. You have to work from where you are. Someday, when I am at or near goal, I will eat about 1200 cal, but if i did that now, I'd never lose any weight; I'd starve! And some days I can't go for a walk, but if I do something, such as clean house or preplan my meals for the next day ... Always looking to get better, always improving! The sky's the limit! Don't hold yourself back to a black n' white goal; go for the green and keep moving forward!1 -
Hi all, just found this inspiring group. I am back at it after taking several months off (and gaining too much back!) Like many people before me, losing the weight when I reached my 60's has been difficult. At this point I am at 239 (from a high of 260) and my goal is to reach onederland. I have lurked this thread for a while and love all the support you are giving each other.
I guess I am really wanting to find an MFP home away from home. I am also hoping to be an inspiration to my adult daughter who has PCOS, lots of weight to lose, and is discouraged.
I live in Disney country and would love to get back to feeling like I can walk for hours around the theme parks without having to stop and rest so much.
Enough of my rambling. It's nice to be here with you folks. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!1 -

Not going to overeat today. Waiting for MIL to come out of surgery. If you have cancer you must come to MD Anderson in Houston. Thankful for family today. Thankful for the last year committed to losing weight and the results .

I am thankful for this group and for mfp. I am thankful for my health (dispite my obesity) and youth. I am thankful to have a house, car, job, ... wine, pets and husband. We had a delicious lunch and the leftovers should last a little while.1

The day, thus far, has gone as planned and I thoroughly enjoyed the beef and broccoli dinner I cooked for myself, instead of turkey ... which will be on my menu sometime in December.
