Non Fiction: The Wealth of Nations - Adam Smith, 1776. Keeping in mind, certain theories were not well developed until 150 years later. But this book has made more of an impact on our daily lives than any other book in human history.

Fiction: The Lord of The Rings - JRR Tolkien.

I hope someone already said this. "And then there were none" by Agatha Chrisitie. Still trips me out to think about it.

Has anyone read The Jason Bourne books? The movies are great, but just wanted to know if the books were good as well.

Yeah - they're really good. Gripping. Actually haven't seen the movies so I can't tell you how they compare

The complete works of Edger Allen Poe
He's phenomenal - but I never would have known if all I'd read is the raven and the tell tale heart (soooooooooo cliche when talking about Poe - kills me)
His poem The Sleeper is possibly my favorite of all time.

Loose Woman by Sandra Cisneros - more poetry but she's fantastic

I started Reading Lolita in Tehran yesterday and I highly recommend it. It is an interesting perspective on the Iranian revolution from the inside.

  • Harry Potter!
It's my obsession. It's been my favourite ever since I first read it over 10 years ago. Although I'm aware that the simple writing style makes it not for everybody.

I'm with you! I'm obsessed with HP too! Every time I finish the books that I'm on, I always go back and re-read the HP series. Especially each time a new movie came out.

I love almost every book that has been posted. And will agree with the Jack Reacher series for someone who's not an avid reader. They keep me glued to the pages.

One of the best books I've recently read, The Kite Runner.

I don't know if someone already said it, but Ender's Game is great. I had to read it when I was in 6th or 7th grade, but as a 30 something adult, I still love it.

Another one is strictly for the nerds and geeks out there, "Our Magnificent *kitten* Tongue, The Untold History of the English Language". Great read if you're in to etymology and are curious about the quirky things in English.

Wow, just one? That's hard... I'm loving all the Hitchhiker's Guide suggestions... definitely one of my faves!

Out of books i've read most recently, I'll narrow it to two:

    1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
    2. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

    Both are amazing books.

Both? I have 6 in the collection, but I enjoy them.

    I also vote for
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub.

Oh my goodness; I didn't get through all 18 pages of suggesstions to know what all has been recommended already. There are a lot of avid book fans here on MFP! :) I don't know how a body can pick just one! A genre you like would be helpful.

You mentioned classics- here are some you might want to consider:

George Orwell's 1984 -- Rather interesting to know that it was written in the 40's!
Aldous Huxley's -- Brave New World
Steinbeck's -- Of Mice and Men
Harper Lee's -- To Kill a Mocking Bird
Stephen Crane's -- The Red Badge of Courage

P.S. When I first read the title of your topic my first reaction -- The Bible.

Aldous Huxley's -- Brave New World
I prefer this to 1984—it's more interesting, it's more of a fun read, it's not so far up its own butt ...
Steinbeck's -- Of Mice and Men
But in this respect I prefer The Winter of Our Discontent. It's beautiful, amazing, blah blah blah. Of Mice and Men is great, too, but ... Discontent feels like more of a pay-off (even though the ending caught me quite off-guard).

At least when people read The Hunger Games, they recognize the horror in front of them instead of thinking it's romance.

I couldn't get past the sixth chapter and even that was a struggle, but the writing is decent and the plot is interesting and deep. I have nothing good to say about 50 Shades. That women are "in love" with Christian Grey makes me fear for humanity.

I'm a book worm, I love reading. Right now I'm reading "The Mortal Insturments" series and "Infernal Devices" series. They are YA books. I like Stephen King books if you are into his type writing.

I'm curious to see what everyone else recommends! Almost done with the book I'm on and could use another good read! :)

Just got done with the 5 books in the series "Mortal Instruments" They were awesome. If anyone with a kindle account would like to "borrow" them I will lend them out. Great reads!
