Jenn, I've started eating some of my exercise calories... but that's mainly because my MFP calorie recommendation has officially gone as low as possible -- 1200. Lately, on days I work out hard (and burn over 1000) calories, I find myself wanting to eat around 1400 calories. Most other days I just work out pretty lightly (30 min), I stick around 1200-1300. The main reason I haven't been eating most of my exercise calories is that I honestly don't believe it's necessary for severely overweight people and I've wanted to lose a little more than 2 pounds a week at first and I have averaged about 2.5lb/week to this point.
I am going to start trying to get into the habit of eating about half of a conservative estimate of my exercise calories. Now that I'm no longer morbidly obese I do expect the weight loss to slow. Plus, I'm quickly approching the weight barrier that I've never broken as an adult -- 205 is the lowest I've ever been and I was there very very briefly because that's where I hit a serious wall in the past. Things are very different this time so I'm not worried about not being able to stick it out and get past it if it happens, but I still feel like I need to prepare myself for it.0 -
bluenote, positively me - thanks again guys. I wont stop being his friend, I think its just ignorance on his part. =( You know someitmes men were put on this earth without brains for some reason. He means well, he just doesnt realize that women have a thought process and dont forget everything a minute after it happens like guys do. I'll just make sure to call him boney, or make a comment about his abnormaly large jaw every so often to get back at him. Hahaha!
Jlb - way to go with that coworker. sometimes people can be so invasive, ugh. I also find it weird that biggest loser has to do it but other channels dont so much...though I guess thats prime time TV! I never watch prime time. If I were Bob or Jilian I would be feeling like a big fat consumer *kitten* having to say all that crap. Pardon my french!
awestfall - whining helps sometimes! But I know you can do it. You've already done so much so far! I wish I was where you were. Dont stress yourself! just maintain and heal
solandra -welcome! enjoy the thread!
Checking in for yesterday:
1-13-10
Calories: Under!
Excersize: I walked a whole lot, tons of stairs. Stupid messed up school campus.
Water: A little under, but maybe right on.
Proud: That I'm sticking to this!0 -
checking in for yesterday:
calories: over again ... but made some better food choices because of all your support and suggestions
exercise: none
water: not great - 32 oz
proud: feeling more motivated, working my way back to making my weight loss a priority to me
thanks everyone for being here, reading everyone's posts and getting support really helps with motivation. I made much better food choices yesterday (even if I still went over on calories). Today will be even better!0 -

I agree! But I'm sure they're compensated generously for their time.
My bf was laughing so much about it last night when we were watching (DVR'ed) Biggest Loser. He thought they should put a product placement inside a product placement. For example, "I like to portion out my Biggest Loser Whey Protein Powder Shake Mix in to Ziploc Snack Sized Bags so I can carry it to work with me and put it in my Quaker Quick Cooking Oatmeal for a snack at work!"
I noticed they were discreetly plugging Asics shoes last night, too. I don't know if it was really intentional but there sure were a lot of close-ups of peoples' shoes when they were walking across those balance beams and it seemed like they were all wearing Asics. I've never seen a TV ad for Asics before so I thought that was weird.
On the commercial note, I was walking into Kroger (grocery store - not sure if it's nationwide) last night & thought I should approach someone from Kroger marketing about a weight loss commercial. "I lost 120 pounds by eating healthy foods I purchased from Kroger!" but instead of the fine print reading "results not typical" they can read "results typical." Blatantly poking fun at all the stupid "I lost weight doing this stupid thing" commercials. I think it's a good marketing idea that screams "Hey America, stop being idiots!" in the nicest way possible.0 -
jlb - hahaha! yeah, its getting to that point! If you say enough brand names in a scentance though I get unintrested pretty fast. I havent seen the Kroger commercial, but as an anti-consumerist graphic designer (ironic, right?) I can appreaciate a good commercial every so often that belittles bad advertising, or that is genuinely good. Good for Kroger.0

For the BL watchers, did anyone else disagree with their little quiz question last show? The question was whether snacking inhibits weight loss. And they said that it did. But most weight loss and healthy eating literature I have read has said that is is good to have 3 meals and 2 snacks to keep your metabolism happy and so that you are not starving by meal time. I found that strange that they would say that snacking is bad. I think it is quality of the snack that makes it good or bad.0

I ranted about this --
I agreed that snacking could inhibit weight loss if you're not recording your calories or paying attention, however, if you ARE paying attention, I don't think it makes a lick of difference whether you eat 2 meals, 3 meals, or 8 meals if they all equal the same amount of calories.
I think the reason lots of weight loss folks suggest eating less MORE often is to keep yourself from being ravenously hungry and that method works very well for me. I pretty much just snack throughout the day, eating 100-200 calories at a time and then eat a bigger meal for dinner. As long as you're keeping track it really shouldn't make a difference. And that's not just my opinion, that's pure & simple science and math.
I've noticed BL often makes blanket statements like that without explaining them. I don't know if they just assume their audience is to slow to understand the facts of the statements or what. And, honestly, with all the confusion and conflicting information surrounding us about being healthy & weight loss, it could very well be true that explaining the statement could cause more confusion than just making the statement & leaving it at that. Those of us who are here are honestly significantly more knowledgeable about being healthy & weight loss than the vast majority of the people in this country. It's sad.0 -
Hey Jenn -- wonder why JM made that statement?

Woot, the power just went out at work. I could really use a half day. C'mon c'mon c'mon!
Edit: Aw, the lights came back on 20 minutes later. :sad:0 -
Jenn - I try to stay under my "pre exericse" cals. I figure i have soo much to loose not eating them will not hurt me. My pre-exercise calories are 1560 ...which is probably a lot more than most of you are getting (it used to be 1640 when i started). I try to stay under 1500 or so...some days i do go over and eat them , but for the most try to stay under them. if i get down to low 200's and they drop my cals, i will probably most likely be eating all of them...
I saw that quiz question and me and hubby answered .."it helps not hurt", then i guess we didn't pay attention when it came back and answered it...We just laugh at the product placement.
My funniest thing , is the new taco bell commercial though. This chik saying she lost weight because she is eating the fresca tacos'...i am thinking "stop going to taco bell" if you are eating every meal at taco bell...come on...go home get some low cal toritallas, grilled chicken and some pico and guarentteed it will be lower cal and better tasting than taco bell ..0 -

I totally agree! I was like WTF... come on really... I have a trainer down the street who owns the local gym and he as well as many other professionals I know say that eating every 4 hours give or take (a healthy snack) actually helps boost the metabolism.
In fact my sister who had weight loss surgery HAS to eat every 3 hours or so because she can only eat small portions.
In my opinion as long as you know what you are putting in your mouth and making smart choices you will still stay within your caloric range for the day.
I guess I just feel if they are going to throw some statement out there like that, they should explain it in more detail.
sorry I ranted. Just really got me going!
Thanks for listening!

agreed ...eating chips and cookies and candy through the day, vs having fruits, carrots sticks or other healthy snacks or even several small meals is much better for your metobalism.0

I got talked into going out for lunch (even though I have an amazing lunch packed).
We went to a Japanese restaurant and sat at the sushi bar - YUM YUM YUM! I got two types of sashimi (fish by it's self) and a big sushi roll. I realized that the rice from the sushi roll was not helping me so I only ate two regular pieces then I picked out the insides (salmon, avocado, cucumber and roe) and left the rice behind. For the sashimi I had Yellow Fin tuna and then smoked salmon wrapped in squid.
It was amazing.
And expensive.:noway:
Now I have buyers remorse for both the calories and the money!!!!:grumble:0 -

awestfall - Thanks for the encouragement ! I currently exercise 45 mins a day, either walking, running, or calisthenics (ie crunches, lunges, etc I use my workout DVDs or my Wii games) and eat about 1500 cals a day. I eat the same foods I always did, just pay attention to the portion size, and eat everything with a side of veggies (raw or cooked). I still eat chocolate and cookies, but in moderation and make it work with my calories. I will even workout an extra 1/2 hr to have a "bad" snack, if I really want it. I have fallen off the wagon, 3x last year, but never gained much (2 pounds at the most) because I continued to exercise and never went back to eating as much I did before. Friday is my one year "healthy living" anniversary!0

homemade - i'm a good cook and she's very persistent...0

above was a reply to the question: where do you find fish and chips at 4 in the morning.....
I'm off track today, ate a lot of sweets, i'm no fan of chocolate but tiramisu and aero mousse are my weaknesses.....and it seems I lack ambition....darn0 -
Just a question, I noticed most of us are under our calories because we don't eat our exercise calories. I was just curious why you don't eat your exercise calories? If you already have MFP set to a 2 pound weight loss, is it because you hope to lose more than 2 pounds a week? I used to eat my exercise calories, but have been eating less of them the last two weeks, and have lost more than 2 pounds both weeks, but I don't think that is something I can keep up forever.
I think I will just eat my exercise calories if I am still hungry. At this weight, I think can afford to have more than a 1000 calorie a day deficit, without throwing off my metabolism.
Thoughts on exercise calories?
My main thoughts on it were that one of the first articles I read when I came to this site gave persuasive reasons why I SHOULD eat my exercise calories. Now, honestly I don't remember it but it's easy to find it in the forum. The reason I don't eat my exercise calories when I have them is that simply I didn't know I had them and I wasn't hungry because the exercise also suppresses my appetitie, so I actually have to realize in advance and make my food plan around the excess calories or I have only a slight chance of eating them, even though I realize it's beneficial to do so and may even be harmful to not do so (regularly).0 -
Haha to the Extra gum thing...i notice that alot...i cant get through school without my gum and i stare at the packet and im like hmm...Biggest loser....wahoo? And to the guy...eh wat a jerk ....sounds like my guy friend (except mine is gay heh). I think you need a better friend...i mean its okay to have him as a somewhat friend...but any guy like that isnt really your friend...you get to a healthy weight and ignore his dumbness.
I agree, that guy is not a great friend. Maybe put him in the secondary or lower friend/aquaintance category and look for people who build up your self esteem instead of tearing it down.
I like to think of myself as beautiful regardless of my weight -- regardless of whatever weight I am. This is partly because once, years ago, I lost 70 pounds. Each time I lost a size I felt GORGEOUS AND SEXY and each time I put on a lower size I felt like a movie star... and people responded to me like that. Then I gained it all back and each time I GAINED a size I felt ugly and worthless and a blob... and I realized AT THAT SAME SIZE ON THE WAY DOWN I FELT SEXY... so I realized, I am sexy all the time, it's an inside job.
And then I realized when I feel low and down and not very good about myself I EAT MORE and EXERCISE LESS... in fact, I hurt my health in a number of ways.
So it seems to me to make sense to just repeat to myself constantly "I'm gorgeous", "I'm sexy", "I'm attractive" and fight the voices in my head (and those dimbulbs in the culture and in my environment) which say otherwise.
Can't seem to get to it everyday but on those days, I often find my support group step in and remind me... like this group! Yay this group!0 -
Good morning! I've been lurking in this thread for a few days, and I really like what I see! I tend to be shy at first, but I am reading everyone's comments and posts, even if my own may tend towards "here's my status, hang in there, folks, and good job!"
I made really good progress before the beginning of the year, but I've been spinning my wheels for two weeks since. It's been stupidly cold, so I haven't been walking, but that changed last night - walked 20 minutes with my husband after dinner. I'm back into the habit of logging during the week and being mindful during the weekend, I'm just not getting anywhere. Hope springs eternal and all that, I'm hoping that a support thread will make a difference, and maybe there's some fine tuning that I can do. Thank you!
Welcome, I have found a support thread invaluable. When I use it.
I decided my main "ingredients" for success based on all my past efforts are:
Food planning
Food journalling
Support Group
Exercise
(I also use prayer and meditation but consider that personal and private, and I think people should do what they feel in that area... and I think people usually DO do what they feel in that area, so cool beans!)
And then I found I had to abstain from my addictive foods, but I find that each person is different in that too. Many don't have specific addictive foods at all.
Then there is a lot of other good advice around and I try to stay mindful of that too...0 -
Check in:
Stayed within calories last night (low) and even lower after exercise caloreis
Exercise: besides vocal warmups- I went to Belly Dance drill class and had a straight hour of drills
Water: I think I was about 16 oz's low, not sure.
Proud: that I didn't let my resistance talk me out of exercise class!
Tonight is vocal lesson. I think I will go take a walk after my 2 p.m. meeting. Then I have a work meeting from 3:30-4:30 and it might go a little late, but I hope not cuz... I have vocal lesson!
My daughter is back from Peru and we had a good catchup call last night after my dance class. So I didn't practice vocals for a long time, just a quick warmup. Overall this week I've had only two singing sessions, but one was a very long singing session so if I sing tonight, I'll probably be all right, but in reality I'm probably going to spend most of the time on Protools tutoring session -- that's a music software thingie that my vocal coach wants me to use for recording myself and it will really help me make a lot more progres...0 -
Welcome newbies:happy:

Hey All, everyone has been busy chatting away. This a busy group!!!!
jlb123, I was teasing ealier, I knew what you were saying the first time.
awestfall, make sure you stick with the doctors orders.
Jenn, congrats on 1 year!!!!!! You have done wonderful. I hope I am down 67 by my 1 year anniversary. I agree with you about eating some of the things we love just in moderation and once in a while. I was hungry for some pringles so I made sure I had enough cals for them today.
To anyone I missed I am sorry,
Hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
proud: I started to run again...i forgot ( i actually like running)...weird...I can't believe i am saying that:noway:
Yay! I just sen a text message to my bf that said "don't let me eat until I run tonight" because my brain is coming up with every excuse in the book to be lazy after work. I'm moving on to week 5 tonight because I'm tired of struggling with week 4 and I think week 5 day 1 looks easier than week 4 anyway. I've been getting discouraged about it. I really like running but it gets so hard after a certain point for me right now -- I'm not hurting and I'm not that out of breath but I just feel like I have to stop running. II guess it's just a mental block and I've been pushing through it repeating Jillian Michaels: "Unless you puke, faint or die, don't stop!" And I haven't puked, fainted, or died yet.0 -

Random Question....
Do any of you ever feel more hungry when TOM visits? It seems like I get tired quicker if I don't eat a little more protein and I was just wondering if any of you had similar experiences.

I have heard that you burn an extra 75-350 calories per day during TOM. I did a little research, but it varies from individual to individual, and the extra calorie burn peaks right before menstruation.0 -

I think it's best to move on to week 5...if you feel it's too hard...don't go back..just run slower...i know that is hard to do but truly it really works...i am not running that fast..more like 4.0 - 4.5 and towards the end of the 25 minutes i made sure, the last 2 minutes, to crank up the speed to 5.5 - 6...and by that time i feel everything that Jillan chants...
But i've got to say i feel so good afterwards
The point is your body will tell you what pace is good for you...but also challenge your body..good luck and i know for sure you will achieve it:bigsmile:0 -
