    Hi everyone!

Just checking in real quick before I run to the school to pick my youngest up early. I did an easy walk on the treadmill this morning (stayed at a 3.2 speed) and only walked a little over 2 miles. That was ok with the calves:wink: Then I got on the stationary bike and did an easy 3.5 miles. I had just finished doing my abs when I got a call from the Dean at Alex's school:grumble: So, I didnt get my pull ups done today or my push ups. The push ups I can do here at home, but sorry Lori...cant do the pull ups til I get back to the gym tomorrow:smile:

Hope everyone is having a great day!:flowerforyou:

awesome! I would have used it as an excuse to sit my happy butt on the couch!!

Do you stretch before and after you do cardio? A lot of ppl do not know you should and this can cause horrible pain.

I hope your calves feel better today

    Jeannie

Well I always stretch AFTER, but not really before. Ive heard alot of back and forth about whether you should stretch "cold" muscles?

I have not been keeping up with my pull ups so well. I did well last week, then the weekend hit and I got off track. I did a few at the gym, but that was it. I sort of think we should use the same thing I was wondering about squats, maybe EVERY day is too much. Every other may be better. Or even every 3rd day. The trick is to keep at it.

Oh Lori after what Ive just been through with my calves...I AGREE!! But I have serious confusion issues about resting up muscles. I get it totally with strength training. But with say my abs for example, I do those 6 days a week at the gym and Im not sure if I should be doing that. Its still muscles, dont they also need time to repair and heal? Maybe we should send up the bat signal on this one and see what he has to say about working certain muscles everyday?

181 squats in 5 minutes! Complete with little people running between my legs & thinking mommy was doing a funny dance.

Roni - I hope everything is okay with your son. Calls from school often aren't good. :grumble:

Jeannie - that sounds really quite funny.

Kati - Yay for power! I hope the ice goes away quickly & good luck with the pizza.

That's all I read. I'm a bad black teamer any more. Sorry. :flowerforyou:

Nope Sara, not good. He's got an In school for the 27th:grumble: For those that dont know, an In school is a detention where they sit the whole school day in one room doing assignments. We used to call it ISS (In school suspension) back when I was in high school. It seems my just-turned-15-going-on-25yr old got mouthy with his algebra teacher:explode: Arent teenagers wonderful?

Does anyone know what should be done when you've met your goal weight but you still want to decrease your body fat %? My body fat % has decreased since I've begun my weight loss journey but I would still like to tone some more. I really want to see definition in my arms, back and legs but am unsure what I should do to get that w/o dropping pounds. I'm only 1.5 lbs away from my goal weight and I'm expecting to hit it in the nxt few weeks but don't know what I should do once the weight goal is met but not the body fat %.

Any and all ideas are welcomed and thank you in advance.

Their are a couple of different ways to approach this,

You can switch to Maintenance calories and get some good strenght training in, Or, you can cycle. Essentially switch to a half to one pound a week GAIN for calories and make sure you are doing alot of strength work to build muscle with those calories, then after a few weeks switch to a calorie deficit again and keep the strength training going to lose body fat while keeping that muscle you built. Either way would work fine with the second method building muscle and losing fat with the first approach helping you lose fat while keeping the muscle you currently have.

Okay I'm going to tell you that I won't be doing this challenge. I had my patella tendon reattached about 10 yrs ago and the bending kills me now. I'm keeping up with the water challenge and logging, even trying to make sure everything is measured but squats, no can do.

    No sweat Jim!

Great work on the measuring/logging ect.

Morning gang. Did my squats. 186. I gotta say though, I think I will only do these every other day. I believe in giving muscles time to repair after you work them. I sort of thought it while I was doing them and then when I was done one of my gym friends gave me heck, since I just did them yesterday. He's right. I like a 2 day break between working muscles, but for the sake of the challenge I'll do every other day. I'll throw in sit ups for 5 minutes on my off day so I'm not slacking.

Lori ... My daughter who has degrees up the wahzoo had a fit when she found out I was planning on doing them every day. She said every other day Mom, give the muscle time to repair.

This is fine, I'm not a monster for pete's sake. lol

You may sub 5 mins of upper body on the off day.

    lol

    Hey everyone!

I think I am going to try something new. I have burned 3400 calories and gained 1.6 pounds since sunday. So, I am going to try low carb. and watch my sodium. I will do a small amount of carbs in am and for lunch but try to have no to low carbs for dinner and snacks. I need to try something.

Roni~ I know how you feel about your legs hurting mine have been hurting all week and I find that I either forget about it once I get started on the treadmill or they get warmed up real good and they stop hurting but that night they hurt like H-E- double hockey sticks!! :noway: :grumble:

I have an almost 15 year old brother in law and he has had between 3 and 5 ISS already and what the school year isn't even half way through. the last one he threw a red colored tampon at a kid and the teacher caught him!! So glad my girls are young!!!

Muscle repair in any part of your body is Mucho Important. To Lori and Bobbie's daughters point its a big part of it. A major oversite on my part. lol However, It depends on the benefit your looking for. Let me try to find the best way to explain this.
For those of you who already know this stuff (bare with me.) And I always need give the standard disclaimer "I'm not a certified trainer, a doctor or even all that bright so don't take my word as god. I can only go based on what I have read. lol

When you put strain on a muscle it tears on a microscopic level. Once these tears happen your body will use nutrients to rebuild those tears (Again, on a microscopic level.) Typically the majority of this repair happens in the first 48 hours. For some beginners it's even longer. Even the most experienced body builders wont work a major muscle group more than once in 48 hours as this hinders that healing process and essentially brings you back to square one of the healing process. Some professionals recommend that beginners work a muscle group every six days for the first few months. So if you workout the same muscle group daily you will not see much added muscle mass or improved muscle tone. Overworking muscles can also increase your chance of injury if your not careful. So, if your looking to build some muscle of get more toned you should definately give your muscles adiquate rest.

On the other hand their is the whole "Feeling the burn" thing. When your muscles burn while working out it's caused by the creation of lactic acid in your muscles. Lactic acid is created from glucose. Glucose is what your body makes from food to provide you with energy. Carbohydrates the the most easily converted to glucose so that is why alot of performance athletes "Carbo load" before a race. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. lol Glucose is GOOD. without it you wouldnt have the energy to run, jump or do any of that good stuff. Lactic acid is a good thing. It's a sign that your body in converting glucose. Lactic acid is in fact fuel that provides a good amount of energy. When you feel that burn it means that your accumulating lactic acid in your muscles. The only benefit believed to be gained from frequent training of the same muscle group is that it improves you lactic threshold, or your muscles ability to obsorb lactic acid as a source of energy. This improved ability to obsorb lactic acid prevents its accumulation, In other words, frequently working a muscle group is believed to be one way to improve your obsorbtion of lactic energy causing you to be able to go longer and harder without "feeling the burn".

For what most of you guys are looking for, resting those muscle groups are important. And it is alot more researched and proven then the whole lactic threshold thing. What I know from personal experience is that as a person who runs or cycles almost daily I can do squats for five mins and feel zero soreness in my legs. However I only work my upper body two times a week and 10 push ups leaves me sore as hell. So their has to be something to this whole lactic threshold thing. lol

    Anyway,

The most importing thing is to do what is right for you and don't go hurting yourself. That's more important than any goofy challenge I throw out there.

Well I always stretch AFTER, but not really before. Ive heard alot of back and forth about whether you should stretch "cold" muscles?

Here is what the gym trainer told me, which I of course confirmed with the Physical Therapist and the Ortho

3-5 Minutes lite warm up. Stretch 15-30 second hold for each muscle. I have 4 stretches for each leg. Then go into the full workout. When done ALWAYS do a 5 minute cool down and then do the stretches again.

I have not had ANY pain in my muscles since I have been doing this. I mean they hurt sometimes when I push myself, but not that darn PAIN...I have enuf in my neck and shoulders, do not want to add to that.

Your doing so good Roni!!

Good explanation Andrew! Just for the record, I wasn't saying your challenge was silly. I didn't even think about it until I was doing my second day and then my friend got on my case so it sort of confirmed it for me. Even though I complained about 5 minutes of squats, it wasn't bad and I wasn't sore after the first day or the second day.

I did the same thing to Roni and myself with the push ups and pull ups. I said, let's do them every day! Not even thinking about giving muscles a break at the time.

Anyway, Andrew, I think you are doing a great job keeping us up and rolling. I feel like I've busted your chops this week with the challenge. Sorry. I didn't mean any of it that way. (I'm claiming temporary insanity from a hormone storm. LOL.) You are the best! Thanks for all you do.

    I didn't complain, Batman-- smiley-angelic004.gif I'm the good one.

what a day, my friends-- lovely lunch at Cracker Barrel-- Tami, fish fry Friday-- oh em gee--

So, yes, I had fried fish and it was lovely--

Spent a large portion of the day battling some nutwad golf coach from Florida that's been basically stalking my daughter-- hubs has handled most of it, but took far too much attention today than we should have had to spend-- yeesh.

Basketball game for Aaron at the high school-- he won. Good stuff.

Heading to work-- no time to run, nor energy tonight-- not much sleep last night (since the stalker dude shenanigans began last night-- ugh)

I'll try to at least squat later-- but no promises. Marla is one tired smiley-angelic010.gif

    Nite, peeps.

Quiet Night in Black team land.

I hope that means that you are all either working out or more importantly getting some quality time with the loved ones. Got a good run and worked the upper body tonight. Good stuff. Gonna shower and head to bed. I want to get the Y in the morning to do some swim drills and observe the saturday morning masters class. Not at all ready to join in, but might be good to see how the big boys do it. lol

    Anyway,

    Have a great night guys!

    Happy Saturday morning Black Team:flowerforyou:
Roni- Sorry to hear about the in school. I have a 15 year old as well but since dh is a teacher in the school he wouldn’t dare get mouthy with another teacher. He waits till he gets in or house to mouth off to us:grumble:

----Batman you could’ve fooled me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all this value information.

Marla – you have a golf coach stalking your daughter? That’s not good. Did you call the police?

Andrew and Beth- Haven’t heard any news on local coverage on you. Any word? Did I miss it?

Good Morning Jeannie, Lori, Tami, Bobbi, Shuntae, Sam,Janie, Michelle, Jim, Richie. Terry, Tamara, Dorreen, Katie, Tanya and everyone else. (I know i forgot someone!)

Went for a great run this morning - 110 minutes. It’s going to be a beautiful day in PA today. DH and DD are visiting Catholic University in DC this weekend…trying to narrow our choices for colleges..very stressful.
    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Hey Donna--

He wasn't physically stalking her, more just online nonsense-- friending her through facebook (which she shouldn't have accepted since she had no idea who he was-- ) commenting on her facebook status all the time, and he started emailing her trying to "help her" by offering her a startup money package to help her get to practice and enter into some tourneys. But, he also said he wanted to be her "life coach." Huh? Sir, are you for real? In turn, she will "help" his academy out giving clinics, so he says, blah, blah, blah-- yeah, sure, you're gonna help her for nothing? Yeah, and I'm Aunt Jemima.

My daughter has officially turned pro and qualified for the "Futures Tour," which is an LPGA developmental tour-- sorta like the minor leagues. Unfortunately, right now there is no money to enter her into events, or get her south to practice-- and sponsors disappeared when she failed to qualify in December for the LPGA.

So this guy wants to "help" he says-- even though we've never heard of him or his academy. So, bottom line we told him to get lost, and told a friend of ours he's a nutwad. The friend apparently told him my husband called him a nutwad, and this guy then starts a nasty e-mail exchange with us yesterday-- how he'd heard what a control freak my husband is, overbearing parent, blah, blah, blah-- great business sense, eh?

In over 10 years of junior golf nationally, we'd never heard this guy's name, and he throws a hissy fit when we call into question his methods, his name recognition, and lack of history or former students to tout as proof that he knows what he's doing. We kept saying, "Just give us one name-- one well-known student that you can claim."

In the world of golf coaching, a coach is only as good as his students-- obviously. In the professional world, everybody knows Tiger's coach-- Hank Haney. Butch Harmon coaches Phil Mickelson-- the coaches proudly announce their successful students-- otherwise, how can anyone know how good the coach and swing teacher is? Duhhhh--

This guy was basically giving us the, 'I don't have to dignify that with a response," line. Yeah, okay buddy, then we'll continue to consider you a fake and a nutwad-- thanks for proving us right.

But, as I said, this e-mail exchange went on all day yesterday-- I'm hoping there are no repercussions on Sarah, but she's out of the junior golf world now, so things get nastier now when people want to make money off of her.

Heading to work-- never squatted-- instead, actually, I ate even more fried, yummy stuff-- must run today.

    Later.

    Hello All,

Sorry I've been so bad with posting, but I read faithfully.

I did my 5 min of squats yesterday (with a 15 pound baby on my chest). We were both amused. I think I've hit a plateau weight wise which is a bummer since I have so far to go. But I need to remind myself that this is a life change and that plateaus are just part of the deal.

    Have a great weekend.

Morning guys. I just made the kids a big cooked breakfast and ate it myself. :noway: Yep. I did. Pancakes, potatoes, turkey bacon, lots of syrup. I never do that, but sometimes you have to. I have been good with my eating lately for the most part and every once in a while I have to say, I'm just eating. I'm not loggin first, I'm not measuring, I'm not counting, I'm just eating it. It was good but I feel full!

The news we have figured was coming, but kept hoping didn't come, came yesterday. Hubs deploys again toward late summer. It has been our life for the last 3-4 years. Training for 2 months, deploy to Afghanistan for 6 months, home for 8 months, training for 2 months, deploy back to Afghanistan for 6 months, (got orders while he was gone for Florida, moved a month after he got home), home for 7 months that time but with moving and getting settled it sure felt short, training for 3 months, deploy for 6 months to Iraq...... He's been home since May, so he will actually be home for over a year (new record) before he has to leave for training. Back to Afghanistan again.

I can never decide if it's good to know so far in advance. It's good because we can plan and think ahead. It's bad because you dread it until it gets here. Even if you don't 'talk' about it, it's there. It's in the back of your head, you know it's coming.

Anyway... that's the newest on our home front. We had been waiting for our orders to do a few things to the house, we are staying where we are for another assignment (so 'they' say), but we didn't want to buy the new furnace and heat pump we need until it was 100% in writing. If something changed and we have to sell our house we will already take a loss, so we would rather not put in an 8K dollar heating and cooling unit for the next person. This deployment puts a whole new spin on it. He won't go to his new assignment until closer time for him to come home, so orders won't come for a while.

I guess we just do it and pray it all works out the way it is supposed to. In the meantime we will enjoy our reduced energy bills and actually being able to cool our house to the temperature we desire. Our heat pump isn't big enough, it's hot in Florida, we can set the temp to 76 and it will never cool to it, it can't keep up, so it runs all the time, never to get where it is supposed to.

Alrighty, enough rambling for now. I"m making DH help clean the attic. He throws everything he doesn't know what to do with up there. It's like a garbabe dump right now. If I can't find it, I figure it's been sent up above. It's his way of keeping the garage clean, he pulls down the attic steps and give it a toss where it can't be seen.

    Later.

Marla- Sara is a lucky girl to have parents who are watching out for her best interests. Scarey to think this guy thinks he knows what is best for her. Nice friend to repeat your comments. Doesn't he know you have her best interests..geez...Does Sara go stir crazy in the winters? Are you and dh golfers as well? I think it's awesome she officially turned pro. I remember when I was in high school....about the time indoor plumbing was invented   all my brothers (4 of them - all golf) wanted me to be the first girl to go out for the golf team. I wasn't brave enough. There was no way I could be put in the spotlight. My one brother works for Wakefern. They are one of the sponsors for the LPGA down near AC, the last few years anyway. He is one of the fortunate ones who gets to play in the practice rounds with the women. Maybe he can play a round with Sara one day!

Lori - I'm so sorry to hear the deployment news came down. I know it is NOT easy. I know how strong you have to be when he is away. What base will he go to? Bagram? Kandahar? DH was in Bagram. He is lucky though as his deployments haven't lasted more than 60 days.He was over there when Fox Sunday NFL Pre-Game crew with Terry Bradshaw Jimmy Jones, Strahan etc. He said it was unbelievable. I can't even imagine what 8 months is like. Do the kids just think of this as a normal routine at this point? I forget you have all boys right?

I know its still awhile away but I will already keep you in my prayers. Is he in charge of a unit? If there is anything I can do, please let me know.

Donna- He will be back in Kandahar. The funky thing was, that's where he went first, came home for a few months, right back there, same address, same office, same room, like going to your 'home away from home'. He did spend the last part of that deployment in Bagram though, things were slow in Afghanistan then, not so much now.

He's an officer, so he does spend the majority of his time in an office. He coordinates all his teams who are out there, doing the job. He's in EOD, (Explosive stuff) so they are the ones who get called to all the road side bombs and other stuff that goes boom. Basically he does what they do in the movie the Hurt Locker... which I haven't seen yet and am sort of afraid to watch, but he did mention renting it last night.

3 boys and 1 girl and unfortunately, yes it's sort of routine at this point in the game. When he gets home, family (our mothers) always says, "Well, surely you won't have to go back!" Don't we all wish that, but we know better. Like I said, I'm thankful we got him home for a whole year this time.

    Thanks for your well wishes!

I'm also thankful because when he got 'the call' he was told they were considering him for a 365 day one. That makes 6 months seem short. Training has also been shortened to 3 weeks, another benefit this time around.
