How many pull-ups/chin-ups can you do at once?

I'm struggling with being able to do more than 8 consecutive pull-ups at once. Anyone else struggle with pull-ups? How many can you do at once?

Heh, I can do one, but not 8. 8 is pretty good if you're going to a dead-hang. Most people can't do a single one! I think at best I could do six, but I'm currently being lazy.

Right now over hand grip, probably 12-13.

When I was in my prime my best was 24.

I can do 8 close grip chin ups and 5 wide grip pull ups. Need to keep working on them.

the most i've done was 16 pull-ups in a row, most from a dead hang, that last few with kipping.

    i have a goal of reaching 21.

Not really sure, I use a weight belt and weights to make sure I can't do more than 6-8 at a time.

the most i've done with 45 lbs on my weight belt is 3 in a row. aiming for 10 with that weight.

I can do 6-7 with a plate; I've been doing 3x5 with a 45. Adding small increments to one of the weighted belts is a little tricky...
  • 36 was my max a few years ago. I generally do about 15 reps about 3 times daily

I can do ONE and I'm super excited about it lmfao. I do one then do the rest with a chair. I'm gonna throw a party when I can do 2.

Edit: And it's a reverse grip chin up. Any other form and I can't even do one without a chair lol

Yeesh, I'm still working on one. :grumble:

I've only been working on them for a couple of months, though, and I'm getting closer. Y'all just wait, I'll get there.

It was one of my goals for the year. I was going to follow the guide here:

4 underhanded and 2 overhanded full "real" (the ones where you hand from the bottom and let your arms extend all the way down) ... Still working on increasing to 15 under hand and 10 over hand.. Being able to the pull ups is pretty big for me. I was never able to do them w/o assistance... As other females know, it is pretty hard for females to do them.

Just got my PB of 2 sets of 5 wide bar (overhanded) pullups last night.
Not done chin ups for a while. Last time I could do about 15... I try tonight

I've heard that you do your max, then work on doing assisted with rubber bands or an assist machine. Work on doing reverse pull-ups. The key is to maximize pull-ups is to increase the volume and frequency that you do them (do more of them more often). If you don't have a pull-up bar at home, get one and pound out a set of as many as you can during every commercial break

Highest I have done was 12 in a row overhand pull-ups (a little wider then shoulder width). That was last week.

For all of you struggling, if you can only do one, half of one, or none. Do these, they've helped me a lot.

    Negative Pull-ups--
    1) Get a box or something that lifts you up a little higher, or if the bar is low enough for you, you don't need one.
    2) Jump up to the bar to the point where you're at the top of the pull-up (bar touching chest).
    3) Slowly lower yourself, count to 10 & do as many as you can until you can barely even hold yourself up for 2 seconds.

**It's going to BURN, A LOT! So ENJOY THE BURN!!

If you do this consistently, let's say twice a week, I guarantee you'll gain a lot of reps. I went from 1-12 in about 2 months, but I wasn't consistent on it, did it once a week or once every other week.

Also, FORM FORM FORM! I'm sorry but kipping pull-ups don't work the same muscle as regular dead hang pull-ups.

Here are some GREAT advice for pull-ups from Bodybuilding.com

Im not sure of my max, but our physical fitness test includes 20 dead hang pullups for max score so I can do at least 20 but havent ever just kept going to see where I am at...might have to try that.
  • 6 pull ups. I can't do chin ups because I don't have a bar, I cling onto the edge of a square beam.
I wonder if it's harder than a bar, anybody ? would I get better results using a bar ?

Pullovers are a great way to isolate the lats and strengthen them if that's your sticking point on doing a pullup like it was with me.

Get ready for a knucklehead to tell you you're doing a skullcrusher wrong though...
