"Fat Girls"

STOCKTON, Calif. - When we pick up the check, we can sometimes expect it to hurt a little, but what happened Thursday night to three Stockton women, is another story. Now, they want the restaurant to pay.
Christina Duran and her friends had enjoyed their evening at the Cameo Club Casino's restaurant, but when the check came, Christina couldn't believe her eyes.
"I got the bill, and I was like, why does the receipt say, 'fat girls?'" Duran said.
At first, her friends assumed she was joking.
"I was laughing at her, and she was like, 'I'm serious.' I'm like, 'No, it does not say fat girls, let me see it,'" said Christina Huerta, who was also at the table along with Isabel Robles.
"[Huerta] was like, 'You're lying,'" Duran said. "And I was like, 'No, I'm serious. Look at it.' She was like, 'fat girls?'"
"I was like, 'Give me that,' and I'm looking at it. I was like, 'Oh, heck no,'" Robles said.
When the server returned, he denied having anything to do with it. He explained that, Jeff, the name on the receipt, must have been the one who typed the words into the system, but Jeff was gone, so the three demanded to see a manager.
"He had like a smirk on his face, like if it was funny, but he was trying not to laugh," Huerta said, describing the manager.
The manager apologized, but his first reaction was to offer 25 percent off the bill. The ladies were shocked.
"He was like, 'Well, I can do 50 percent,' and we were just like, are you serious?" Huerta said.
Huerta took a photo of the receipt, and although she was embarrassed, she wanted others to see it. The women said they can understand why people will laugh when they first hear this story, but after awhile it's no laughing matter.
"It's not," Robles said as she started to cry. "It's not funny. I can just see it over and over again, and I still can't believe it. They labeled us 'fat girls.' It's just something we got to deal with."
News10 asked the management at the Cameo Club Casino how something like this could happen.
"I was really appalled, obviously, at the behavior," Bar Manager Jimmy Seimers said.
Seimers wasn't working the night this happened, but when he found out, he questioned Jeff who, Seimers said, admitted to typing the words into the system.
"I don't think he understood completely because he was busy last night, but that's just no excuse," Seimers said.
Seimers said Jeff was suspended as management continues to investigate the incident; he added the investigation would probably not find anything to save Jeff's job.
Even though the restaurant is investigating the incident, Seimers wants apologize to the women.
"I just want to tell them that we're sincerely sorry for that, and that we'll do everything in our power to make sure that this never happens to anyone ever again," Seimers said.
Nonetheless, it isn't clear if anything can make up for the damage done.
"I still can't believe it," Huerta said. "I still can't get that out of my mind, what happened to us. I still can't believe that somebody would put that on a receipt."
"They can't change it," Robles said. "This is something that we got to live with, all three of us."
Several managers at the casino said this was an isolated incident and that a relatively new employee responsible. They also said they hope these three women will return to the casino, so that the managers can apologize in person."

Wow that's so disgusting.0

I used to work at a bar and you're supposed to either ask one of the members in the party for their name to add on the tab or put in a non discriminatory phrase. What an idiot! I'm not sure how he thought no one would notice.0

I guess "table 6" wouldn't have been specific enough.0

If the "fat girls" play their cards right, they can probably reach a nice settlement via Gloria Alred.0

I want to know if the ladies in question were fat.
If it was the other way round and it had been labeled " fit girls"
They woul have been really happy.
So why should rhey be shocked if it was an accurate representation of them?
Maybe it will be the kick they need to get in shape.0 -

Um, no. Whether someone is fat can be a judgement that varies widely from person to person. It's exactly the same as labeling them "ugly girls" on the receipt. Not professional, not ok.0 -

I read the article elsewhere earlier today. Yes, they were overweight. It may even motivate them to lose weight if they'd been planning it already. It still doesn't give anybody the right to label them as such though, it was intended as an insult. Nobody asked for the staff owners opinion and he should keep his negative opinions to himself whether they are fat or not!
ETA: If you had something physically different about you that was used in an insulting way in a situation like this, would you not be pissed off too?! They don't HAVE to lose weight if they don't want to. Labelling them as this should never be a way to make people behave and look just how you and a lot of society wants them to, they have their own decisions to make as adults. I'm sure they also are aware they're overweight without anyone pointing it out!0 -

Ugly is a lot more subjective than fat though. I'm not saying it's nice, but its certainly different.
They were actually pretty big, see this version of the story, with pics - http://preview.tinyurl.com/bpeufp50 -

Agree with her.
Regardless of what the girls looked like - fat/ugly/attractive - it is not professional or acceptable to have the written about them. The table number/first name is professional, but to make comments based on your preference based on someones apperance in such an environment is not on. I would be pissed regardless of a reciept reading fit/ugly, just because I went out to eat, not to be made a speculation of.
Also, with the manager who was on being described as 'smirking' and 'trying not to laugh', it is just cruel.0 -

Not professional, you're right, but I would be inclined to agree... Maybe stop yapping about it and do some self-reflection.0 -
I think it's funny.
Sure a little harsh, sure a little insensitive. But that's life...deal with minor inconveniences and handle business accordingly. Cryin' never solved any of my problems.0 -
I wonder if any of them are on MFP.0

This is my thoughts, it's not nice, and it is unprofessional, but it's also true, and life can be cruel sometimes. No one died, no one got seriously hurt, obviously it was a slow news day though.0 -
Jeff's an idiot... They were 3 guests!0

He might have halfway hoped one of them would see it. Some people like that actually like to excuse their nastiness by calling it "motivation" or even (obscenely) a "favor", like the only reason anyone is overweight is because some ****head has never openly humiliated them about their weight before. I have a relative who's been over 300 lbs her entire adult life and I still cannot believe the kinds of things people would say to her in public, especially in restaurants. Even worse when women did it, though a lot rarer.0 -

I'm thinking the fat girls aren't the ones who need to do the self-reflection. And yes, maybe they should have taken some action instead of "whining" about it; they should have dragged his sorry a** out into the parking lot and kicked it till his holly berries were hanging out of his nose. Hey, at least they'd be getting some exercise, right?0 -
I'm sorry, I don't usually post on forums, but this really got me. I feel embarrassed for these girls. It's situations like this that me me scared to go out to eat. I constantly feel scrutinized by society anyhow, and to be disrespected in an establishment in which you are a paying customer is horrendous. These girls did the right thing to tell people about this restaurant's practices.
On a side note, the women being interviewed really need to use the word "like" a lot less.0 -
I work in a restaurant, and if we don't have a name for the table, we give them a nickname for the bill. "Fat girls" would NEVER make it onto their bill.0

Exactly. You do not stick something on the bill you are giving customers, and not expect them to notice.
He knew they'd see it, and he knew he was being an *kitten* doing it.0 -
these so called fat girls humiliated themselves even more by giving the story to the media- and will forever be known as the fat girls by thier own fault. They should have just complained to the resturaunt owner ABSOLUTLY...and I would have demamded an apology from Jeff- and an oppertunity to confront him about it- and demanded he answer -what his intentions really were by labeling them fat girls. Simple damage control. I have zero tollerence for the violin (woe-is-me). Handle your business. Your feelings get hurt and you blame everyone but yourself. I hope they are on MFP like all of us are, lose weight and go back all slim and fit, order from jeff and sign the check 'fat Chicks bioch". Soooooooooo fun.0

Insulting, demeaning and ridiculing overweight people is one of the few "acceptable" prejudices in our overly PC world.0
